When Ohio was still considered the countries frontier, legendary Wyandot leader "Leatherlips" helped broker peace deals with the European settlers. This didnt sit well with his fellow tribesman and would ultimately cost him his life. A striking monument stands today in his memory, evocative of the legendary "Sitting Bull" monument. Overlooking the Scioto Rive in Dublin, Ohio, this limestone monument stands today as a tribute to the legendary warrior chief. Traveling West, is the infamous "Blue Hole" of Castalia. Once rumored to have no bottom, this crystal clear pool dumps millions of gallons into the Sandusky Bay each day. Once attracting over 165,00 people each year, this location was closed in 1990 and is in private hands today. However, similar type pools are located close by that you can visit. You can even win a chance to be one of the lucky few to have a chance to visit the original park. Finally, did you know that Ohio had an amusement park that is only open 4 days a year? Mark is known for his straightforward, actionable insights that drive real results.    Our conversation unravels the often-misunderstood differences between negotiation strategy and tactics and explores how they can work together to produce winning outcomes in high-stakes deals. Mark shares his tried-and-tested techniques for planning, stakeholder mapping, and using both collaborative and competitive approaches. Imagine setting sail; your route, preparation, and destination are your strategy, while the course corrections and adjustments you make en route are your tactics.   Negotiators often conflate the two, winging it with a handful of tactics and no defined destination. Mark's advice is to know what you want before you even enter the room, or risk negotiating with nothing concrete to ask for or offer.   Planning for High-Stakes Deals Mark underscores the vital role of planning in negotiation success: “80% of success is in the prep.” This isn't about just showing up with instincts and hoping for the best—real value is discovered in understanding both your levers and those of every stakeholder involved.   Stakeholder mapping and leverage analysis are the bread and butter of Mark's approach. Many sales professionals make the mistake of only engaging with procurement, assuming that price and delivery are the be-all and end-all. In reality, multiple stakeholders shape a deal, and understanding their unique concerns opens new avenues to add value and find leverage.   Shockingly, Mark sees less than 20% of negotiators (maybe even less than 10% in sales) invest the necessary effort in planning. Those who skip prep and rely solely on talent or instinct often fail under pressure. Three Game-Changers for Challenging Negotiations When it comes to effective negotiation tactics, Mark shares his top three: Strategic Silence: After posing a question, resist the urge to fill the void. Silence gives the other party space to reveal more information—and sometimes their true position. It's a sign of respect and a tool for deeper discovery. Mark recommends holding your tongue as long as it takes, even if the silence feels uncomfortable. Conditional Giving: Never concede without getting something in return. If someone asks for a discount, don't just agree. Make the concession conditional and specific—“I might be able to do that, if you can X.” Avoid open-ended or vague counteroffers. The “What If I Say No?” Test: To clarify the other side's fallback plan (and your own), gently ask, “What will you do if I say no?” This can unblock negotiations and uncover true deal breakers, bringing clarity to tough conversations. Flexing Between Approaches In complex sales scenarios, Mark recommends reading broadly and flexibly applying lessons drawn from various schools of negotiation thought. Whether it's Harvard's collaborative “win-win,” a competitive strategy, or a hybrid approach, sticking rigidly to one philosophy is a mistake.   Use whatever is best suited for the situation that you're in, and be willing to flex. If the situation or negotiation style of the other party changes, so should your approach. The most effective negotiators are those who can pivot between collaboration and competition as needed.   Handling Aggressive Buyer Tactics Sales professionals often face aggressive techniques—take-it-or-leave-it ultimatums, last-minute demands (nibbles), or attempts to rush. Mark's advice: don't get flustered or succumb to urgency. Most “take it or leave it” situations are bluffs; calmly acknowledge and probe for flexibility. If a nibble appears just as you're about to close, slow the process down and, if you make a concession, always ask for something in return. Today, we're talking about why teams hesitate to speak up and how to change that. If you've ever felt like your voice doesn't matter in meetings, that stops now. The Problem – Why Teams Aren't Engaged: When a leader asks, “Any questions?” and no one speaks, it's not because there's nothing to say. It's because people don't feel safe to share. When voices stay silent, innovation stalls, ideas get repetitive, and a few people dominate conversations. The Solution – The Wrong Answers Only Challenge: At your next meeting, challenge yourself (or your team) to go first—but start with a deliberately wrong answer. Example: If someone asks, “How should we improve client engagement?” You say: “Let's start responding to emails in Morse code.” Or if your boss asks, “How do we cut costs?” You respond: “Sell our office chairs and replace them with bean bags.” Why? Removing the pressure to be right makes it easier to contribute. It also lightens the mood and gets people thinking more creatively. When you practice this exercise regularly, it will overflow into the moments when you're not practicing it—creating a culture that's not afraid to share, speak up, and contribute creative solutions.   Journal Prompts to chew on: When have I held back from sharing an idea? What happens in the eighth ditch (Cantos 26-27)?Overlooking the eighth ditch, the Pilgrim and Virgil view the punishment of those souls King Minos found guilty of deception or evil counsel.[1] The Pilgrim sees columns of flames, and Virgil explains, “there are souls concealed within these moving fires, each one swathed in his burning punishment.”[2] Dante the Pilgrim observes a “flame with its tip split in two,” to which Virgil explains the flame contains the souls of both Ulysses and Diomedes.[3] The contrapasso of the eighth bolgia is that these deceivers burn as tongues of flame just as their tongues in life brought forth pain and destruction.[4] Moving on, the Pilgrim and Virgil meet another soul, Guido da Montefeltro, “a soldier who became a friar in his old age; but he was untrue to his vows when, at the urging of Pope Boniface VIII, he counseled the use of fraud in the pope's campaign against the Colonna family. He was damned to hell because he failed to repent of his sins, trusting instead in the pope's fraudulent absolution.”[5] Virgil and the Pilgrim press on, where, coming to the ninth ditch, they see “those who, sowing discord, earned Hell's wages.”[6]65. Does fire have a special role in the Inferno?Given its name, most expect fire to be the normative punishment of the Inferno—but it is not. The question is whether the role fire does play has a special pedagogical purpose. Dr. Prudlo sets forth that fire, especially as seen here as “tongues of fire,” represents an “anti-Pentecostal sin.” Fire plays a role in the punishment of the blasphemers, sodomites, usurers, simonists, and false counselors. Fire, as Dr. Prudlo notes, is the “most noble element in Dante's world,” and it plays a certain “refined punishment” in the Inferno. It seems to signify a certain “unnatural abuse” within the sin, an “abuse of some special gift that God has given us.” The role of fire in the Inferno merits further consideration.66. Is there a special relation between Ulysses (Odysseus) and Dante?Dante the Poet arguably has a certain fondness for Ulysses. As Dr. Prudlo observes: “genius untethered to virtue is one of the most dangerous things that can possibly exist.” Dante the Poet and Ulysses are both geniuses. Yet, Ulysses cannot find rest upon returning to Ithaca—the question for knowledge calls him away from his wife, son, and kingdom to journey out into unknown Ocean. He sails passed the Pillars of Heracles, which mark the boundaries of mortal men, and, upon seeing Mount Purgatory, God strikes his ship and all lives are lost. Dr. Prudlo remarks that where Ulysses attempted to make it to Mount Purgatory despite God, Dante the Pilgrim will make it to Mount Purgatory with God....
