Zach Calton is a professional bike racer who recently transitioned to racing and coaching full-time after previously working at Specialized. He discussed his victory at the 2024 Point to Point race, where he set a new course record. Zach shared his strategic approach and how he was able to pull away for the win. You probably don't have to think too hard to recall the early days of the coronavirus lockdowns. When all we wanted was an excuse to get out of our homes, bikes became that excuse. You could head out your front door and get some exercise while maintaining your social distance. It was the perfect pandemic escape. And so it was no big surprise when bike sales skyrocketed. One would think that it would be a great time to be in the cycling business. Instead, a global economy dealing with supply chain delays, factory shutdowns, and parts shortages meant that there was no supply to meet the demand. Not exactly what any business owner would call ideal. Our guest today is Diaa Nour, founder of Ventum, a direct-to-consumer bike brand out of Heber City, Utah. Ventum first burst onto the scene with their triathlon bike, turning heads with its signature Z-shaped frame. From there they quickly expanded their lineup to include road and gravel bikes to mirror national trends. Diaa has big plans on the horizon for Ventum, but before he can accomplish those goals he's got to maneuver around the global supply chain backup just like the rest of us. Listen in as we cover everything from why starting a bike company was way more difficult than he initially assumed, why he prioritized sponsoring female triathletes in an effort to level the gender wage gap between men and women, and why he chose to partner the brand with perhaps the most polarizing figure in cycling, Lance Armstrong.

In this episode I get the opportunity to thank a volunteer!In my Ironman Waco 70.3 race recap, I told the story of how I met someone in the Ironman store the day before the race and during conversation he said that he would make plans to present me with my medal when I crossed the finish line. True to his word, he encouraged me during the last mile of the course and greeted me at the finish line to place my medal around my neck. Through the power of Social Media, I tracked him down and he agreed to be a guest on the show.Nathan Jones shares how he came to be a volunteer during Ironman weekend in Waco, TX and we talk about some of the areas he was able to serve. Nathan is on staff with Fellowship of Christian Athletes whose mission is to lead every coach and athlete to a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. FCA, as an organization, has a world-wide reach and they have the opportunity to work with everyone from the local “pee-wee” to the professional level. We discuss how important the role a coach can play in a young person's life and Nathan shares how working with coaches at the Junior High, High School and Collegiate level is his “bread and butter.”We talk about the role of the volunteer and the impact that is made by giving of your time. Nathan shares a biblical verse that he believes really captures the “heartbeat” of the volunteer. During the two day weekend, Nathan spent 20-24 hours working at different stages of the race. Beside working the finish line on Sunday, he shares that he was able to provide support on the swim and we discuss a few of our previous swim misadventures.Nathan is currently on his own Ironman journey. He is currently training for Ironman 70.3 Texas in April 2022 and Ironman Maryland in September 2022. We talk about how his training is going so far and he even shares if he has plans to get the M-Dot tattoo.And we of course talk about bikes. I even try, unsuccessfully, to get Nathan to agree he needs the custom painted Ventum bike that we both admired in the Ironman store.  

It is the first day of fall as we record this episode. That means hunting season is inching closer. Tim, a Hoyt shooter, really would like to get his hands on the new Hoyt Ventum. We read the Field and Stream article about the alleged crossbow stalk, possible record deer, harvested in Kentucky. Derek Settle of Henderson County, Kentucky reported to Field and Stream that he had stalked a whitetail buck to 12 yards before making the kill with his crossbow. Not any whitetail buck, but a 57 point 280 inch buck. Derek checked the deer in with the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife telecheck system.In fact, Derek killed the deer on a high fenced hunt at Patoka River Whitetails Preserve in Indiana. He even posed with a picture of the same deer at their preserve. Derek, you are a douche! And the fact that you fabricated this whole story and dedicated it to your deceased father makes you even a bigger douche!
