For decades, 175mm cranks were the go-to choice in the pro peloton. But now, from Tour de France champions to elite gravel racers, the shift to 165mm is in full swing. To understand the science behind this trend, we sat down with Phil Burt—renowned physiotherapist for Team Sky, Ineos, and British Cycling. He's the expert who helped guide Sir Bradley Wiggins to Olympic gold, and today, he's here to explain why shorter cranks aren't just for the pros anymore. But making the switch isn't as simple as swapping crank arms. Phil breaks down the three essential bike fit adjustments you need to get right—because without them, you could be sacrificing speed, comfort, and efficiency. Zur Anmeldung: Max and Friends for KiTZ – 05. In this chat with Fearne, Bradley explains that putting all his energy into become a great cyclist was a distraction from childhood traumas. In order to cope with the aftermath of being groomed by a coach as a teenager, and having an absent father, he created a larger than life public-facing character. Endurance News: 2022 Tour de France and standings Stage 12 Thomas Pidcock, Ineos, Yellow Kobe Gossens, Intermarche, Green Antony Perez, Cofidis, Polka Dot Thomas Pidcock, Ineos, White Notables, Chris Froome, Tadej, Sepp Stage 11 Jonas Vinnegard, Jumbo Tour de France officials drag protesters off the road during chaotic stage 10 Senior officials from the Tour de France organisation were seen dragging climate crisis protesters into a ditch during the 10th stage of the race from Morzine to Megève . Despite being chained together around the neck, a small group of young protesters were dragged off the race route by tour officials. At around 36 kilometres from the finish, on a section of straight road, the protesters sat on the course and set off red flares. The stage breakaway and peloton were both halted until the road was cleared. Climate activists from the Derniere Renovation movement said: “Since the government doesn't care about the climate crisis, we need to come and take over the Tour de France to refocus attention on what matters for our survival. We need to make our government react as they lead us to the slaughterhouse. “Non-violent disruption is our last chance to be heard and avoid the worst consequences of global warming,” the group said. The Tour de France organisers, ASO, declined to comment on the protest. Commentating on the scene on an in-race motorbike, Sir Bradley Wiggins told Eurosport viewers: “It really was going off. It was quite crazy. A lot of people getting quite angry, some of the directeur sportifs got out the cars, stuck a boot in.” The Derniere Renovation group was responsible for an interruption at the French Open tennis, when a protester jumped on to the court and tied herself to the net, wearing a T-shirt saying: “We have 1,028 days left”. In the Tour protest, they were seen wearing T-shirts stating: “We have 989 days left”. The Tour has long been the target of protests but this took place against the backdrop of the race organisers pledging their commitment to reducing their carbon footprint. This year's “road book”, the manual given to all those working on the race, states that the Tour is “resolutely committed to being an increasingly eco-responsible organisation.” In 2020, during the pandemic Tour, the race was criticised by recently elected “green” mayors in some of France's major cities. The mayor of Lyon, Gregory Doucet, described the Tour as “macho and polluting” and lacking an environmental conscience, and there have been multiple calls for the race to further reduce its carbon footprint. The final outcome of the race itself was put into doubt when the race leader Tadej Pogacar's UAE Emirates team were hit by two Covid‑19 positive tests, just 48 hours after all riders in the peloton were tested and declared free of the virus. George Bennett, one of the defending champion's key mountain support riders, and teammate Rafal Majka, both tested positive on Tuesday morning in Morzine. Bennett withdrew from the race while Majka was allowed to continue racing on the grounds that he was asymptomatic. On Saturday another of Pogacar's team, Vegard Stake Laengen, also tested positive and withdrew. The eight-man team with which Pogacar started in Copenhagen is now reduced to six, with Majka's continuation uncertain. “As per our internal protocols, Majka was tested for Covid-19 and returned a positive result this morning,” the UAE Emirates team said in a statement. “He is asymptomatic and analysing his PCR, [we] found he had a very low risk of infectiousness, similar to the case of Bob Jungels [the AG2R Citroen rider who tested positive in Copenhagen] earlier in the race.” The Australian rider Luke Durbridge (Team BikeExchange) also tested positive and was withdrawn from the race. ASO moved to restrict media access to the team buses, or the paddock, saying that “only representatives of the UCI (jury, commissaires, anti-doping), the teams' staff and the organisation's personnel supervising the teams will have access to the paddock”. Access to the finish lines, for the media, remains unchanged. Magnus Cort Nielsen of the EF Education-EasyPost team won the stage in a photo finish from Nicholas Schultz, a teammate to the absent Durbridge. Lennard Kämna, of Bora Hansgrohe, one of the day's breakaways, moved to within 11 seconds of the race leader Pogacar but is expected to drop back in the next 48 hours, which includes summit finishes at Alpe d'Huez and the Col du Granon. Van Aert gives Tour de France green jersey to fan who lent him a pump Stage 11 of the Tour de France was a big day for Jumbo-Visma, who claimed the race lead with Jonas Vingegaard, but the day was even bigger for one lucky spectator on the roadside of the Col du Granon. Wout van Aert was coming back down the Col du Granon from the finish of stage 11 of the Tour de France after the podium ceremony for the points classification - which he leads by a huge margin - and had a slow leak in his tyre and no Jumbo-Visma mechanic in sight. The Belgian stopped during the descent to his team bus and some cyclists quickly offered up a frame pump so Van Aert could add some air to his tubeless tyre. In thanks, Van Aert gave one cyclist the green jersey off his back - literally telling him to unzip the back of the podium version of the green jersey and have it as a souvenir. The moment was captured by Italian journalist and cyclist Michele Pelacci who is riding in the Alps with his brother and watching the Tour from the roadside. He works for a number of Italian media including the Alvento magazine and the official Giro d'Italia podcast called GIROglifici. He admitted he wasn't quick enough to get Van Aert's green jersey but captured the moment and shared photographs on Twitter. “My brother punctured and we stopped at the side of the road to change the inner tube. Guess who stopped after five minutes? Wout van Aert," Pelacci wrote on Twitter. "I said: Hey Wout, there's liquid coming out of your wheel. He looked at me stupidly and explained it was tubeless. He asked for a pump and an English guy offered him one. Wout told him: ‘You're a hero' and said: ‘I've got something for you, take the green jersey off my back, it's yours'. “What did I learn from it all? Be the first to pass a pump to Wout van Aert because in exchange he could give you a special souvenir.” Pro cycling is unique in how close fans can get to the riders and spectators clamour for discarded bidons. But to receive such a valuable keepsake is hors-categorie. 'A brilliant day' Van der Poel and Van Aert attacking during stage 11 of the Tour de France Van der Poel and Van Aert attacking during stage 11 of the Tour de France (Image credit: Getty Images) Van Aert was likely in a generous mood because of his team's success on the day. He attacked from kilometre zero, drawing out a breakaway and, after snatching some more points in the intermediate sprint, came back to help the team in its assault on race leader Tadej Pogačar. Van Aert pulled Primož Roglič back to the yellow jersey group after the Slovenian had put in several stinging attacks, coming up and past the group like a high-speed train. On the final climb, Vingegaard hardly needed his teammates as he leapt away with 4.5km to go to win the stage and snatch the race lead. "It was a really big day, we prepared for this day - you could see we were all ready to give it a go and attack the yellow jersey," Van Aert said after the podium ceremony. "It was not easy, I was in front ready to help Jonas and Primož toward the Granon, but apparently Tadej Pogačar could chase down the guys all the time. So at that moment, I thought it was going to be hard to do something. But I think because Laporte and I at the beginning of the stage we made him suffer already early on. That's why Jonas could break away on the final climb." Van Aert's breakaway started with a familiar friend - fellow cyclocross racer Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) set aside their rivalry to help pull the breakaway clear only to be dropped on the first climb, the Lacets de Montvernier. "The plan was to be in the breakaway and be the rider out front. That Mathieu was on my wheel was a nice surprise, it will be really cool pictures. We did a really fast first 30k, I really enjoyed it. "Again I could take the points in the intermediate sprint, so a perfect day but especially for GC this was a brilliant day." For the fan who received his green jersey, it was undoubtedly an even more brilliant day. What's New in the 303: Boulder Peak Sunday The Boulder Peak Triathlon was last Sunday. Christophe & Macka review the last stage before the rest day and Sir Bradley Wiggins pops in the podcast
Our Great Coach on this episode is Simon Jones. Simon is a cycling coach who started working with British cycling in the mid 1990's. In 1998 he was appointed the British National Track Endurance Coach and then in 2003 he was promoted to the Head Coach role of British Cycling. During this period he coached Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish. And in 2004, 2005 and 2007 the team came top of the medal tally at the Track Cycling World Championships. In 2007 he moved to the Western Australian Institute of Sport in coaching roles for racing sports. This then led him to a coaching and innovation role with Team Sky under Sir David Brailsford in 2014, and 2 victories in the Tour De France, in 2015 and 2016. And from there to the top role at Australian Cycling as the Performance Director from 2017 to 2021. Simon puts athletes at the very centre of his coaching approach. He believes that attention to detail and a focus on, in his words, planning not the plan, help the cyclist unlock their potential and adjust accordingly in a complex world. He believes in the human ability to synthesize information, summarize, find patterns and adjust and in this this interview, recorded before the Tokyo Olympic Games, you will hear him talk about: His description of working with Sir David Brailsford at team sky, and how they applied a focus on marginal gains to win the tour de France. How on race day you have to be mindful of not having a negative impact as a coach, and so you need to stand back and give the athlete space. And his view that legacy is for your ego, and so he doesn't focus on it, but instead tries to just do his job and enjoy the role. This was an enjoyable interview with a coach who believes in empowerment and I hope you enjoy it as much as Jim and I did. Sir Bradley Wiggins returns alongside Matt Stephens and Anders Mielke to dissect the first three stages of the Tour de France. Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl doubled up over the first three stages – with successes for Yves Lampaert and Fabio Jakobsen – while BikeExchange–Jayco's Dylan Groenewegen collected the final stage in Denmark ahead of the rest day and the race heading to France. Mielke revealed that the lack of crosswinds on the Great Belt Bridge will have left director of the Tour Christian Prudhomme disappointed with a dream crushed. Wiggins, Stephens and Mielke look at Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team's stunning start to the 2022 edition of the race. Patrick Lefevere had come in for some criticism for leaving Mark Cavendish out of the Quick-Step line-up. However, Stephens added that Cavendish has no issue with Fabio Jakobsen or his selection for the race, but hinted that clear communication regarding selection was a little lacking. While Lefevere is a polarising character – who should not be immune to criticism - his winning mentality is beyond reproach, adds Stephens. The guys also talk Groenewegen's emotional win, and “the classiest act in the world on a bike” Wout van Aert. Wiggins re-lives the Grand Depart in the UK, and there is special praise for fans from Denmark after the opening three stages. And in this podcast, Alexa will be giving her review of The Chimp Paradox by Professor Steve Peters and explaining why she believes it's a book every adult could benefit from, as well as why the model is so easily applicable to coaches. KEY TAKEAWAYS The likes of Sir Chris Hoy, Steven Gerrard, and Sir Bradley Wiggins have all advocated Peters' work and have used the model described in the book as ways to achieve their successes. In a nutshell, for me, The Chimp Paradox is a revealing and encouraging mind management, self-help resource for adults. Throughout the book, the emotional centre - or the limbic system, is referred to as a ‘chimp' and the more logical centre as the ‘human', and Peter's details the relationship between the two. Sir Bradley Wiggins is joined by Orla Chennaoui and Graham Willgoss to get right up to speed with the Vuelta a España after Brad's time away at the Tour de France and Tokyo.Brad's backing an unrecognisably relaxed Primoz Roglic to make it three Vuelta victories in a row, and says his Jumbo-Visma team "might as well be in the jersey, because they're riding like they have it". Rogla seems happy to attack the last week, says Brad, but must now show his hand in the mountains to take the lead back from Odd Christian Eiking. Orla, meanwhile, is enjoying the new Jumbo leader's new laidback style: "He's perceptively giggled twice [in interviews], and it's an odd thing to listen to, because he's usually so monosyllabic!" In another Grand Tour that is not going Ineos's way, there's a warning from Brad not to write off Egan Bernal too quickly. Praise, too, for the calm head on young Tom Pidcock's shoulders after his Olympic gold and his focus on the road ahead. Sir Bradley Wiggins is joined by Graham Willgoss and Orla Chennaoui for the latest podcast to review Stage 20 of the Giro. The Ineos Grenadiers once again produced an exhibition of General Classification riding on Saturday. The performance all but delivered Egan Bernal a second Grand Tour win, and left a stage that had promised fireworks, lacking in genuine GC action. That fact left Chennaoui feeling ‘empty'.Simon Yates cracked in the final few kilometres but the Team BikeExchange rider will likely finish on the podium, which Wiggins and Chennaoui agree is a great result, concluding that ultimately the Brit was beaten by the collective excellence of Ineos. In fact, Ineos have such depth that, Wiggins says, they could name a completely different team for the Tour de France and remain as strong. The pressure of team leadership is also debated given the contrasting fates of Bahrain–McLaren team-mates Damiano Caruso and Mikel Landa. Finally, the big reveal: Who will be singing what at the karaoke wrap party.Brought to you by Zwift where fun is fast. The Bradley Wiggins Show is Produced by Pete Burton See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Sir Bradley Wiggins is joined by Graham Willgoss and Sean ‘The King' Kelly to dissect Simon Yates' solo win on Stage 19 and its ramifications.Yates' performance all but guarantees him a podium finish prompting Kelly to posit that the Brit can apply pressure on Egan Bernal by gambling on Stage 20.However, Wiggins, who called Ineos' Giro performance near flawless, sees Bernal wearing the maglia rosa to Milan, praising his mentality. Here is what Wiggins said:“Different animals come out on the bike. Off it Bernal is very gentle, on it, he's a killer. It's a mental strength that separates the great from the good.”Elsewhere, Wiggins and Kelly discuss hierarchies within the peloton after Peter Sagan was fined for ‘intimidation' on Stage 18. Ahead of the most eagerly anticipated stage of the 2021 Giro d'Italia, Sir Bradley Wiggins and Graham Willgoss reminisce about the last time the race climbed the Strade Bianche roads to Montalcino in 2010. Cadel Evans famously won that day, and in the first time the pair have spoken since they raced, Brad exclusively speaks to the man who famously crossed the line first in the muddied rainbow jersey. Brad, who, having crashed out with a broken collarbone, watched Cadel win the Tour in 2011 at home admits to becoming obsessed with beating the Australian when they went head-to-head in France in 2012. “Cadel got me out of bed in the morning”. Throughout COVID-19 I’ve recorded several podcasts in advance knowing they’d be spread out - and among that group was my recording back in the Fall with today’s guest, Yanto Barker. Yanto started the U.K.-based cycling apparel and accessories brand Le Col and how the brand was created is absolutely fascinating. Born in Wales, the child of hippies and far from a life of means, Yanto was plucked by a local bike shop that quickly noticed his talent for riding bikes fast. This not only graced him with free product, but led him down the path that eventually found him traveling the world and riding with the likes of Sir Bradley Wiggins, the winner of the 2012 Tour de France. Yanto’s story is certainly inspirational, but as well as one comprised of self awareness and incredible clarity. Granted, hindsight is 20/20, however it isn’t often someone lets you cross that threshold in their personal story whereas Yanto graciously grants us that access. For me this conversation was a great experience navigating the waters of appreciation & humility, and Yanto shares what he defines as “real strength.” We then take a dive into marketing including Le Col’s digital strategy and the hows and whys it’s quintessential to their business. I think you’ll find his story to be uplifting and motivational to say the least. We chat with Matt Stephens about life as a Professional Cyclist, Commentator and Digital Content Creator. From a young age you could find Matt out and about on his bike, whether it be out with his mates, going to and from school or out with his dad. Matt first realised that he wanted to be a professional cyclist after being taken over to France by his dad to go along to one of the Tour de France stages, after seeing the action up close he came home and started to compete. From then on Matts career has seen its fair share of ups and downs, from cycling in Europe to turning Pro to Sponsors pulling out of team deals, to injury. After Matts injury he decided it was time to try his hand at something else and joined the police serving on the force for 12 years, from there Matt has once again jumped into the world of professional cycling, although this time he is behind a microphone or camera, sharing his passion and knowledge for the sport. We also chat about the ever growing love affair between Britain and Cycling as both a spectator sport and recreation, with characters such as Sir Bradley Wiggins, Victoria Pendleton, Sir Chris Hoy, Laura Kenny and Mark Cavendish to name just a few, excelling at the sport and inspiring new people to get out on their bikes. We both thoroughly enjoyed chatting with Matt, his passion and enthusiasm is infectious.

See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Leinster were able to bounce back from defeat in the European Champions Cup final to secure a third trophy in the last 2 years with a 18-15 defeat of Glasgow. Eoin Reddan and Gerry Thornley run the rule over the Pro 14 final - a game where that defeat to Saracens, and the opening game of the Rugby World Cup against Scotland, both cast a shadow. While Leinster were winning in Glasgow, Roscommon were doing what Roscommon do best - wrecking the best laid plans of Mayo with a stunning one-point win in Castlebar. We're joined by Shannonside FM legend Willie Hegarty. Plus there's polished wood swing seats, Sir Bradley Wiggins' culture fix (and John Lennon fixation), the Connacht internecine hatred pie-chart, and another summer of Mayo.
Our seventh guest is road and track racing cyclist, and five times Olympic gold champion Sir Bradley Wiggins. Now retired, Bradley competed professionally between 2001 and 2016. Having became the first British winner of the Tour de France, he has earned international recognition, receiving a Knighthood in 2013 for services to cycling. Away from his life as an athlete, Bradley has developed a passion for clothing under the guidance of friend and tailor, Mark Powell. In this panel discussion, we discuss cycling, London, menswear and tailoring in our Capital. *Warning explicit language
Sir Bradley Wiggins is one of cycling's greats. The first Briton to win the Tour de France; the Hour Record holder; an Olympic champion in multiple disciplines. Since retiring though, you won't be surprised to hear he doesn't ride as much as he used to. In fact, while recording this, I didn't see him on a bike at all. So instead, we chatted as we travelled around Britain together for a theatre tour during the Autumn. Other well-known names crop up, like Sir Dave Brailsford, Mark Cavendish and Sean Yates. This, though, is quite different to other episodes, but then Brad is very different to every other cyclist.See more on Instagram and on Strava. Ian Parkinson has some gift ideas for the cyclist in your life in this edition, ably assisted by our Desire editor Stuart Clapp and a host of special guests. Sir Bradley Wiggins tells us about his new book Icons and why, somewhat controversially, Lance Armstrong is included among his 21 cycling heroes in this handsome tome. Cillian Kelly, statistician extraordinaire, is the man behind The Road Book, a mighty 900-page record of the 2018 road season edited by Ned Boulting and including essays from Rouleur contributors Morten Okbo, Matt Rendell, Philippa York and many more. Ian spoke to Cillian at the Rouleur Classic to get the story behind “the Wisden of cycling”. The guys at Prendas Ciclismo have a fine range of jerseys titled Forgotten Races, made in conjunction with Santini. Andy Storey and designer Fergus Niland take us through the tales behind the collection. Plus photographer Laura Fletcher has an exhibition at Look Mum No Hands on the wonderful world of Japanese keirin racing, shot in Kyoto. And Stu gets misty eyed and a bit tearful recalling the bike his parents sold from beneath him when he was just a boy. Kleenex at the ready… See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Tom Edwards and Markus Hippi present highlights from the past seven days on Monocle 24. This week: Sir Bradley Wiggins tells us how he wants to inspire the next generation of cyclists… and make sure they’re riding in style. Ben Rhodes, the former speechwriter and foreign-policy adviser to Barack Obama, discusses Trump and Brexit. And Sophie Nathan of the British rock group Our Girl performs live.
Cycling hero Bradley Wiggins was accused by MPs this week of "crossing an ethical line" by taking medication that could have enhanced his race performance. Rising from a rocky start to become Great Britain's most decorated Olympian, Wiggins has lived a fascinating life including murder, mods and music. Can his reputation survive this? Presented by Mark Coles Produced by Jordan Dunbar and Beth Sagar-Fenton.
Cycling is again in the spotlight for the wrong reasons. A damning report by MPs argues that Sir Bradley Wiggins and Team Sky "crossed an ethical line." They claim that the Tour de France champion used an asthma drug - which is allowed under the anti-doping rules for medical need - to enhance his performance. The accusation is strenuously denied, but where exactly is the "ethical line"? Isn't it expected that competitors will do anything and everything within the rules to gain an edge? Even the model sportsman Roger Bannister sharpened his running spikes and rubbed graphite on them before breaking the four-minute-mile barrier. It certainly gained him an edge, but not unfairly. In sharp contrast, there are those who believe this latest case is another example of how sport has lost its soul. They say the ideals of 'sportsmanship' and respecting the spirit of the rules have given way to making money, winning at all costs and cheating if you can get away with it. In sport (and in competition generally) there will always be a grey area between what is moral and what is forbidden. Should we aim to narrow that gap, tighten the rules and enforce harsher sanctions? Or can ethical grey areas be a good thing? It could be argued they are essential in order for sportsmanship to shine. In business, they can be seen as necessary for innovation. In our personal lives, they give us moral agency to make important decisions and they provide a means by which we judge others. Surely a regime in which everything is either illegal or acceptable is the black and white landscape of tyranny? And yet - if the line is not simply between winning and losing, where should it be drawn? Witnesses are John-William Devine, Dr Paul Dimeo, Dr Emily Ryall and Ed Smith. Producer: Dan Tierney.
Matt Lawton, Daily Mail cycling journalist, on the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) select committee’s findings into doping in sport in the UK.The report focussed on the use of TUEs and corticosteroids for Sir Bradley Wiggins and Team Sky in grand cycle tours.Lawton told us the reputations of Wiggins and others have been “obliterated”.
Sir Bradley Wiggins....not much else needs to be said.
We originally titled this Techno vs Retro. However, Michael Robson completed an hour record at the Boulder Velodrome riding a Boulder B Cycle commuter bike the same day as Sir Bradley Wiggins set the UCI Hour Record. Our conversation focuses on the hour record with a bit of Techno vs Retro...but we'll save that one for next time. www.wearebutter.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
We welcome back Michael Hutchinson, Michael is a champion time trialist in his own right, and he has attempted cycling’s hour record twice. His first attempt was eloquently chronicled in his book, The Hour, and his most recent work, Faster, the Obsession, Science and Luck behind the World’s Fastest Cyclists is a template for all levels of cyclists who strive to go Faster. Michael is again kind enough to join us to discuss the most recent hour attempt of Alex Dowsett, and to preview the much anticipated attempt of Sir Bradley Wiggins. Be sure to follow Michael on twitter @Doctor_Hutch and his twitter feed will be the perfect compliment to watching Brad Wiggins make history, or not.....Thanks for downloading the show, contact me at ttpodcast@yahoo.com and follow me on twitter @markflorence11.
Kirsty Young's castaway is the cyclist Sir Bradley Wiggins. Winner of four Olympic gold medals, six track World Championship gold medals and the first Briton to win the Tour de France, cycling is in his blood. His parents met through the sport - his Australian father was himself a professional, his British mother a keen follower. His father left the family when Bradley was still a toddler and it was his mum, Linda, who helped him pursue his dreams of being a champion cyclist. Inspired by Chris Boardman's success at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics by the age of 16 he'd won gold, silver and bronze at the Junior National Track Championships and was called up to the National Squad. He was Junior World Champion at 18. Knighted following his achievements in 2012, he's soon to attempt the world record for the furthest distance cycled in an hour and plans to return to the track in the Team Pursuit at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Producer: Cathy Drysdale.
