In this fascinating episode of Boundless Life, you’ll get to explore some of today’s most misunderstood and debated health topics—from gluten myths and kitchen toxins to advanced regenerative treatments and rapid muscle growth strategies. It’s an eye-opening mix of science, personal experimentation, and practical tools you can start using right away to upgrade your health. We kick things off with a fresh look at gluten. I'll reveal why most gut issues blamed on gluten are often caused by other culprits—like glyphosate, food additives, or FODMAPs—and why going gluten-free might not be the magic bullet it’s made out to be. You’ll also hear why extreme elimination diets can backfire, and how diverse, whole-food nutrition is often the smarter path. From there, I dive into your kitchen—the most overlooked source of hidden toxins in your daily life. You’ll discover how common cookware and appliances may be exposing you to microplastics, forever chemicals, and heavy metals—and how to clean up your kitchen without stress or spending a fortune. I share my go-to brands, what to avoid, and simple swaps that make a real difference in optimizing your long-term health. I'll also break down the five most effective compound lifts for fast muscle gain, how to structure sets and rest periods, and how to fuel your body with nutrient-dense, muscle-supporting foods. You’ll get a clear protocol for protein timing, supplement support, and even how to incorporate raw dairy and organ meats for next-level results—without falling for hype or gimmicks. Packed with research, personal experience, and honest insight, this episode is your roadmap to living stronger, smarter, and more boundless every single day. Pulling up to this episode is like pulling up to your local library... it's got a little bit of everything in it, except for hopefully those pesky midwestern ticks. The episode opens with the usual intro banter, where Des characterizes Kara as being in "librarian mode." If Kara is the librarian, then that makes Des the person who is relentlessly trying to make you laugh in there. Thus, we are off to a good start riffing about summers in the midwest, travel, and camps.  Kara talks about winning an Emmy(!) and about Colt graduating from 8th grade and being on the precipice of both driving and high school. Des shares about her prep for the upcoming Western States training camp. Is she ready to enter the shallower end of one of the most historic 100-milers in the world? Plus, they bond over their mutual hatred of ticks before turning to discuss their impressions of season one for Grand Slam Track (GST). What do they think so far? Where could it be improved? Will it move the needle on interest in our sport? Then, they react to a RW article on influencers and phones in races. Should they be allowed? Where is the line to be drawn? Is it good for the sport or just annoying? Finally, they end with a Lagoon Sleep top 5 where Des questions her chinchilla ways as they both share uplifting moments from their weeks.  If you love the pod, support our partners and the pod in the following ways... Episode 149 - The Keegan Episode   What up party people. I mentioned this on the show but I gotta hand it to my boys Tyler and DJ for holding down the fort last week while the rest of us bums skipped town for other things. We were all a little nervous about how it would go because in the 3 years we've been doing this thing, I think that was the first time we've ever only had two of us on the air but hey, I gotta say, it went absolutely swimmingly. Speaking of swimmingly, if you came here this week expecting more of those seamless transitions and on-topic discussions without interruptions well you're in for a rude awakening because with all five of us back in the studio you know this week was anything but.    So if you find yourself mid episode with glazed over eyes and ears, just mosey your way over to one of our partner pages and indulge in some misery shopping to bring your spirits back to life. You've got all the options over at Bike Tires Direct (code “bonkbros” for 10% off - https://www.biketiresdirect.com/?utm_source=bonkbros&utm_medium=banner&utm_campaign=bonkbros2025).  Or if you need some marginal gains to tickle your fancy then head over to Silca to meet all your wax and wash needs (code “Bonkbrosgravelseason” for 10% off - https://silca.cc/?utm_source=Bonk+Bros&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=stripchip&utm_id=Bonk+Bros+Podcast). You can even check out their latest product drop, the pocket compressor, although they only had a limited quantity available for domestic purchase so if you're Stateside it may just be window drooling for you by now.   Oh yeah, can't forget about the endless energy and recovery supplies from our homies at KetoneAid. 1. High-intensity interval training (HIIT)Just a few minutes of high-intensity exercise with lots of rest can quickly deplete excess sugar in your blood. Try doing exercises such as burpees, plyometrics, or a spin bike.2. Apple cider vinegarApple cider vinegar contains acetic acid, which can slow down a blood sugar spike after consuming sugar. Combine one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with 8 ounces of water and drink this after a high-carb meal. 3. Berberine, NAC, and other supplementsBerberine is considered a natural Metformin without the side effects. You can pair berberine with NAC or alpha lipoic acid for more natural blood sugar support. Excess carbs deplete vitamin B1, so if you have a cheat meal or fall off the wagon with carbohydrates, increase vitamin B1.4. Post-meal walkA 25 to 30-minute post-meal walk can help burn off excess sugar so that it is not converted into cholesterol or stored as fat. 5. Potassium and magnesiumPotassium is necessary for glucose storage in the liver and the muscles. It also helps move glucose into your cells. Magnesium is critical for the cells that produce insulin. Nearly every diabetic is deficient in magnesium!6. Ketone supplements Providing the brain with ketones supports healthy blood sugar in the brain, which can improve cognitive function and decrease brain fog. 7. Saltwater Sodium helps prevent stress-induced blood sugar spikes. Adding more salt to your last meal or adding it to a glass of water can improve sleep and calm your mood.Dry fasting can lower blood sugar faster than anything else! Dry fasting means you're not drinking water or eating food. When you're dry fasting, your body increases the hormone glucagon, which helps to lower blood sugar. Growth hormone and antioxidants also increase, and your body quickly switches to fat-burning.Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio:Dr. Berg, age 60, is a chiropractor who specializes in Healthy Ketosis & Intermittent Fasting. Fueling & Nutrition for Young Runners: A Guide for Coaches & Parents with Michele Pettinger

Our diet and fueling habits are setting important examples for our kids. Are we doing it right? Joining me is coach Michele Pettinger. She's a Level 2 certified coach through the Road Runners' Club of America, a certified specialist in fitness nutrition through the ISSA, and she's the author of the new book The Young Runner's Guide to Nutrition. We discuss how young runners should be fueling and approaching nutrition (which during the teen years is a formative time period). It's critical we get the basics of sound nutrition habits right early so that we can set kids up for success. We also chat about practical strategies for families and coaches, the impact of puberty on our nutritional needs, simple ways to make optimal fueling easy, and why Michele thinks my tradition of bringing my kids to McDonald's after a hike in the mountains is just fine. As a dad, this topic is really important to me. I've been around young runners and unfortunately, disordered eating is not rare. Hopefully this conversation will help you navigate food, nutrition, and fueling in a more thoughtful way with the young people in your life. You can also download a bonus episode with Registered Dietitian Anne Mauney on fueling / diet Q&A here. Thank you Previnex! After resisting most supplements for the better part of my life, I'm cautiously changing my tune. I'm now a Masters runner and in my personal life, I'm optimizing for longevity. I want to be my healthiest self for as long as possible and I'm excited to partner with Previnex to make that happen. Previnex uses the most bioavailable, clinically tested ingredients, the optimal form and dose of each ingredient, pharmaceutical grade manufacturing, testing of raw ingredients and finished products. For every purchase you make, they also donate vitamins to kids in need. Their new Muscle Health Plus is something I'm now taking. Turning 40 – and having a thin frame – has made me realize that I need to prioritize lean muscle mass to stay healthy and age well. Muscle Health Plus has creatine, essential and branched chain amino acids, and it's designed in a way to maximize protein synthesis and the absorption of amino acids. Muscle Health Plus will help you prevent muscle damage, which is particularly important for aging runners who want to protect themselves from muscle loss and recover faster after hard workouts. As is true for all of their products, Previnex adheres to the highest of standards: their ingredients are clinically proven to do what they say they're going to do. They're now offering international shipping so if you live in the UK, Canada, Australia, or anywhere around the world, you can try Previnex as well. Previnex offers a 30-day money back guarantee. If you don't feel the benefits of their product, you get your money back no questions asked. With their focus on quality and customer satisfaction, I hope you'll try it! Use code jason15 for 15% off your first order at Previnex! Thanks to Ketone-IQ! Ketone-IQ increases the levels of ketones in your blood – and raised blood ketone levels do increase focus and alertness, which is why I take a shot before every podcast recording and have for almost two years even before their sponsorship. I feel dialed in and quick for these high-stakes conversations. There's also promising research – and loads of anecdotal evidence – that ketone supplementation can help with recovery if taken post-exercise. I know some of the best ultra runners in the world, Boston Marathon champ Des Linden, and the pro cycling team that won the TdF in 2022 and 2023 all take ketones post-race to aid recovery. Go to Ketone.com/strengthrunning to save 30% on your first subscription and receive a free 6-pack of Ketone-IQ and try for yourself today. Thank you DrinkLMNT! A big thanks to DrinkLMNT for their support of this episode! They make electrolyte drinks for athletes and low-carb folks with no sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. They are offering a free gift with your purchase at DrinkLMNT. And this does NOT have to be your first purchase. You'll get a sample pack with every flavor so you can try them all before deciding what you like best. DrinkLMNT's products have some of the highest sodium concentrations that you can find. Anybody who runs a lot knows that sodium, as well as other electrolytes like magnesium and potassium, are essential to our performance and how we feel throughout the day. If you're not familiar, LMNT is my favorite way to hydrate. They make electrolytes for athletes and low-carb folks with no Sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. I'm now in the habit of giving away boxes of LMNT at group runs around Denver and Boulder and everyone loves this stuff. Boost your performance and your recovery with LMNT. How to Mentally Rebound from Injury: Psychologist Carrie Jackson on Emotional Recovery

The Strength Running Podcast

No runner wants to get injured. But the worst part of an injury is often the mental side of it, not the physical! Sure, you can go to the PT or self-treat your injury. That will help you physically heal.  But what about your loss of identity when you can't run? What about the loss of a future goal? How will you respond to feeling like you lost your community? Perhaps more importantly, your mental outlook will affect how you treat your injury and the level of success of that treatment. We have to get this right! Joining me is mental skills coach and psychologist Carrie Jackson. She is the author of On Top of Your Game: Mental Skills to Maximize Your Athletic Performance and coauthor of Rebound: Train Your Mind to Bounce Back Stronger from Sports Injuries. She's worked with elite and pro runners around the world and her work has been featured in the New York Times, the Washington Post, Runner's World, and most other major media. You can hear even more of Carrie on her podcast, The Injured Athlete's Club. We discuss: How to practice acceptance Fear management strategies How to adjust goals Why "recovery is training"  As a formerly injury-prone runner, this conversation really impacted me. I remember how each injury made me feel. And there's almost no worse feeling for a runner! It's one of the major reasons why my coaching practice and training programs all revolve around consistency and staying healthy so you can focus on your running. If you want to learn even more about how to prevent injuries, go to strengthrunning.com/prevention. Thank you LMNT! A big thanks to LMNT for their support of this episode! They make electrolyte drinks for athletes and low-carb folks with no sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. They are offering a free gift with your purchase at LMNT. And this does NOT have to be your first purchase. You'll get a sample pack with every flavor so you can try them all before deciding what you like best.  LMNT's products have some of the highest sodium concentrations that you can find. They're the exclusive hydration partner to Team USA Weightlifting and quite a few professional baseball, hockey, and basketball teams are on regular subscriptions. So check out LMNT to get a free sampler pack and get your hydration optimized for the upcoming season. Thanks Boulderthon! Boulderthon is a top 10 race in America according to USA Today and one of the best fall marathons according to Runner's World. Join me in Boulder, one of the top running destinations in the country, on September 28th, to experience the tight knit running community here, race on the epic streets of Boulder, and finish on historic Pearl Street. While I live in Denver, I travel to boulder probably once a week to run. It's arguably one of the best running locations in the United States.  There'll probably be cool and crisp fall weather for racing fast, too. And don't worry, Boulderthon is a BQ-eligible, USA Track & Field Sanctioned Event. Boulderthon is on track to sell out again this year so don't miss out. Use code STRENGTH20 to save $20 on the marathon or half-marathon here and I hope to see you in Boulder this fall.

In this segment, the conversation covers a variety of topics related to cycling, including the status of Mavix drones, preferences for cycling shoes, the debate over laces versus Boa systems, and the practicality of Velcro shoes. The discussion also touches on oral hygiene in relation to sugar consumption, the importance of managing sugar intake on and off the bike, and post-race recovery methods. Hydration practices in the sauna and their effects on performance are examined, alongside the significance of VO2 max and the role of hubs in cycling performance. In this episode, the hosts delve into various aspects of cycling, discussing the significance of bike components, particularly hubs and tires, and how they impact performance. They also explore the cultural aspects of cycling, including a humorous take on beer and its role in cycling events. The conversation shifts to Tucson, highlighting its appeal as a cycling destination, before critiquing a new Ridley drop bar mountain bike, emphasizing the need for better design and components. Takeaways Scott had a strong start but faced challenges during the race. Travel issues can significantly impact an athlete's performance. Injuries often overshadow other aspects of an athlete's life. The hosts share a light-hearted banter about cycling and personal lives. Scott's experience highlights the unpredictability of racing conditions. The conversation reveals the emotional toll of competitive cycling. Viewership of cycling events varies greatly between disciplines. The hosts express their differing levels of enthusiasm for bike racing. Scott's personal life is intertwined with his cycling career. The discussion reflects on the popularity of cycling events and their accessibility. GCN's Perry Roubaix highlights show significant viewer engagement. Race highlights are crucial for audience understanding of events. Formula One's excitement is often overshadowed by its complexity. MotoGP offers a more dynamic racing experience than Formula One. Motocross can be chaotic and hard to follow live. E3 race highlights provide insights into upcoming classics. Pogacar's participation in Roubaix is a significant development. Tire choices can greatly affect performance in races like Roubaix. Riders often have to balance tire width for cobbles and pavement. The anticipation of racing on cobbles adds to the excitement. Mental health is an important topic that can be unpacked in conversations. Cycling predictions often lead to friendly debates among enthusiasts. Naming trends can reflect personal stories and cultural influences. Adoption allows for name changes, but it's a sensitive topic. Experiences with natural disasters can bring communities together. April Fool's Day can lead to playful banter among friends. Casual conversations can reveal deeper insights about life and relationships. Personal anecdotes can make discussions more relatable and engaging. The importance of trust in one's work is highlighted in humorous exchanges. Celebrating birthdays can lead to unexpected connections and shared experiences. Choosing the right cycling shoes is crucial for performance. Laces can be a disadvantage during races due to loosening. Gravel-specific shoes are often seen as a marketing gimmick. Cyclocross shoes are designed for running and cycling. Personal comfort varies greatly among different shoe brands. Finding the right fit is a challenge in the cycling shoe market. Insoles can help alleviate hotspots in shoes. Many cyclists stick to familiar brands and models. Testing shoes before buying is a significant gap in the market. Innovative designs can enhance comfort and performance in cycling shoes. Mavix is still a company, despite rumors of its closure. Lace shoes are preferred for aerodynamics, but have disadvantages. Velcro shoes are underrated for their speed and convenience. Oral hygiene is crucial for cyclists who consume sugar during rides. Cyclists should separate sugar intake on and off the bike for better health. Post-race recovery drinks like Fanta may taste better but aren't the best choice. Hydration practices in the sauna can impact performance and recovery. Maximizing heat acclimation may not be worth the risk of dehydration. Tires are the most critical component for performance in gravel racing. Understanding the role of hubs can help improve cycling performance. Investing in tires is more beneficial than hubs. The performance difference in hubs is marginal compared to tires. Cycling culture often intertwines with humor and beer. Tucson is recognized as a great place for cycling. The new Ridley bike lacks proper design for serious cycling. A production drop bar mountain bike should be purpose-built. Old inventory can lead to questionable bike builds. Cyclists often experiment with different tires for races. The conversation reflects a mix of technical and cultural insights. The hosts share personal experiences related to cycling events. Chris Chavez and Preet Majithia have returned with the kind of number crunching that would make a tax accountant blush.Yes — we're talking about The Ten, and more broadly, the increasingly anxiety-inducing state of the 10,000 meters heading into the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.Because apparently World Athletics took one look at the event and said, ‘What if we made this harder, more confusing, and fully dependent on vibes, shoe tech, and whether your country's federation knows how to read the rankings page?'So here we are. The women's standard dropped to a vicious 30:20.00. The men's remains at a world-class 27:00.00. And unless you're from Kenya or Ethiopia—or somehow running 10Ks on the road in super shoes fast enough to melt tarmac—you're probably counting on the whims of the World Rankings gods to punch your ticket to Tokyo. In the U.S., Weini Kelati is still the queen of consistency. Parker Valby and Karissa Schweizer skipped The Ten entirely. Elise Cranny has re-entered the picture and Jessica McClain quietly garnered some valuable points by PR'ing by half a minute. On the men's side, it's a little simpler: Grant Fisher, Nico Young, Graham Blanks, and Woody Kincaid are qualified. All they have to do is battle at USAs.There's still time. A 10K at Mt. SAC is coming. Maybe Pre will host a last-minute 10K.  So let's break down who's up, who's down, who's close and who's hoping UK Athletics doesn't screw them over again.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram + Preet Majithia | @preetmajithia on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. How I Built This: Bandit Running Co-Founder & CEO Nick West

In the fall of 2020, while much of the world was still stuck inside wondering when things might go back to normal, Tim West was lacing up his racing shoes, logging miles, and building something new – not a tech startup, not an app, but a running brand, out of his basement. He quickly recruited his brother Nick on his vision. They didn't spend money on big splashy ads or influencer campaigns. Instead, they listened, they ran, and they asked questions. They built gear starting with socks that runners actually wanted. Over the next few years, what started as a side project for the two brothers and their designer turned co-founder Ardith  Singh, grew into one of the most exciting new names in running: Bandit Running – a Brooklyn-based company that makes premium performance apparel and centers community at the heart of everything it does. But Nick West didn't come from the fashion world. Him and his brother Tim were working in e-commerce at Jet.com. They grew up immersed in the New Jersey skate and surf scene where the coolest brands weren't built in boardrooms. They were built by friends on the street and from the ground up. That ethos is what stuck with them.Today, Bandit makes everything from race day singlets to streetwear inspired track pants. They host events that pack the sidewalks of New York. They've launched the unsponsored project celebrating professional runners who don't get the financial support from the major shoe brands and they're building a brand-first model that doesn't just sell apparel; it tells stories. So how did a couple of brothers go from zero marketing budget to a brand that's evolving what running looks and feels like? That's what we find out in this episode. It's 10 a.m. in Brooklyn and Nick West is refreshing his phone again and again. We're sitting in the Bandit Running headquarters. The coffee's still hot, and the 2025 spring collection, nearly a year in the making, is officially live to the public. This drop: It's the result of 11 months of long days, late nights, and that's just how those days go.On a previous drop, there was even a 2:30 a.m. production shoot involving a whiteboard, an iPhone, and Nick himself modeling shorts that he didn't expect to be in. These are the kind of stories that don't make the product page on the website, but at Bandit, they're kind of the point because this isn't just an apparel company. In this episode of the CITIUS MAG Podcast, Nick West joins me on how he and his team built Bandit Running, a company rooted in connection, performance, and that little bit of rebellion that every runner knows by heart. It's a brand built by runners, forerunners, driven by storytelling, community, and the belief that there's a better way to build a business in this space.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Nick West | @nicholas_west on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. “I also learned that I just love working with athletes who truly have that passion about seeing how good they can be. The outcome isn't as important to me as I thought. It's just, ‘Let's go see how good we can be and see where that lands us...' Stepping away from college and taking this really windy journey to where I am now, I've been able to work with all different levels of athletes and it's been equally rewarding to those who run their first mile without stopping all the way to the world stage. It's been a non-conventional path, but I've been loving it.”My guest for today's episode is someone who's seen—and shaped—American middle-distance running from just about every angle. Juli Benson was a 1996 Olympian in the 1500 meters, a world-class competitor in her own right, and now she's one of the most respected coaches in the sport.Over the past two decades, Juli's coaching journey has taken her from college programs like Georgetown, Air Force, and Penn to working with World Champions, Olympians, and emerging pros. She coached Jenny Simpson to her gold medal at the 2011 World Championships. She guided Kevin Sullivan back to the global stage. And today, she's the coach behind Nikki Hiltz, helping them chase a 2028 Olympic dream of their own.In this episode, we get into it all: – What makes Nikki tick and how their partnership is evolving – The differences between coaching NCAA athletes vs. pros – How Juli learned to balance intensity with recovery—the hard way – Her reflections on being a woman in the coaching world before there were many to look up to – And what it's like now to see coaches like Shalane Flanagan, Diljeet Taylor, and Laurie Henes rise to national prominenceWe also talk about Juli's time at Air Force, the unique challenges of coaching across every level of the sport, and what it's meant to mentor everyone from Olympic finalists to first-time runners. This is a conversation about resilience, evolution, and quiet excellence—and it's one of my favorite coaching deep-dives we've done yet.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Juli Benson | julibensontraining.comSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. Let's go back a couple of years. It's 2017 and Ali Feller is a writer, runner, self-described talker, and she's sitting in her living room in her house with a microphone, an idea, and a whole lot of enthusiasm. She doesn't have a fancy studio, a producer, and any guarantees that anyone is going to listen. What she does have is a belief that runners, pros, weekend warriors, and people chasing something big have stories that deserve to be told. So she starts talking, listening, and asking really good questions.Today, the Ali On The Run Show is the biggest running podcast in America. It's downloaded millions of times a year. It's where elite marathoners, Olympians, and everyday runners come to share their journeys – whether they're chasing gold medals, breaking barriers, or just figuring out how to balance running with the rest of their lives. At the center of it all, this endlessly curious, deeply passionate, and incredibly warm person has built not just a podcast, but a community. But Ali's story isn't just about the show and the podcast; it's about resilience. It's about saying yes, even when it's scary. It's about navigating Crohn's disease, pregnancy, motherhood, and most recently, a breast cancer diagnosis, all while showing up, microphone in hand, ready to tell the next great story. Through it all, she's been a race announcer, a marathoner, a friend to just about everyone in the running world, and somehow the nicest person in America. So how did she do it? How did Ali go from a kid who loved dancing to magazine editor to podcaster with sell-out live shows, an engaged audience, and a voice that runners turn to every single week? That's what we're going to find out today. I'm joined by my wife Kari Lynn to chat with Ali Feller on how she built the Ali On The Run Show into the biggest running podcast out there.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram + Kari Lynn Cotone-Chavez | @karilynncotone on InstagramGuest: Ali Feller | @aliontherun1 on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. Running gets harder as we get older. Being a master's runner makes it harder to focus on health, speed, and improvement.  But with a sound approach, we can thrive in our 40's, 50's, and beyond. Joining us is Coach Michael McGrane, who has been in the running industry for more than 40 years. Currently the head coach of the Norwich University Cross Country team, he's won "Coach of the Year" awards, holds a 2:30 marathon PR, and is currently training for his 24th Boston Marathon. We're going to discuss the physical and psychological changes that have to occur as Master's runners if we want to stay healthy and keep running well. Michael is pulling insights from his long personal running career, his work as a college cross country and track coach, as well as his prior experience coaching with the Boston Athletics Association. If you're a runner in their 40's or beyond, get proven training programs that prioritize your health and strength here. “My mentality is if I'm going through that high mileage and adding that stress in, I don't want to also have to worry about workouts and putting my body in a hole where I can't recover for a week or two down the road. I think that's very different than how a lot of other people approach training, but for me it's been working.”For the first time in over 30 years, an American man has won the Los Angeles Marathon. On Sunday, Matt Richtman stamped his name in the history books, breaking the tape in 2:07:56—a massive personal best and a statement win in only his second marathon. The 25-year-old ASICS athlete didn't just claim victory; he dominated, pulling away from a world-class field with a decisive move that turned the streets of LA into his own personal proving ground. The performance did have so many people scratching their heads thinking: “Who?” I am here to answer all of those questions.Today, we sit down with Matt to break it all down:– The moment he knew he could win—and the fearless move that sealed it– Why he had no set plan going in but let instinct take over– What's next after a 2:07 breakthrough in just his second marathon– Why his training on Strava doesn't make sense but maybe after he explains it - it makes a bit more sense– Why he's got a traditional and old-school approach to training– And how it feels to be part of the next generation pushing U.S. marathoning forwardThis episode is for anyone who loves the thrill of a bold race and the promise of what's to come.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram Guest: Matthew Richtman | @richtman13 on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. Partial versions are available elsewhere. Full transcript and other information on Substack.Episode Summary: Nick talks to Peter Turnbaugh discuss the pitfalls of oversimplified diet labels in research, Turnbaugh's studies comparing plant-based and animal-based diets in humans, and how these shifts rapidly alter gut microbes and short-chain fatty acid profiles. Key Takeaways:The term “high-fat diet” in research is often misleading, as it can include high carbs and vary widely, complicating study comparisons. In a 2014 study, switching humans to a plant-based (high-fiber) or animal-based (ketogenic, no-fiber) diet changed their gut microbiome within one day, showing its remarkable adaptability.Ketogenic diets reduce Bifidobacterium in the gut, which may lower inflammation-linked immune cells (Th17), potentially aiding conditions like multiple sclerosis.Short-chain fatty acids (e.g., butyrate) don't just come from fiber; they persist even on zero-fiber ketogenic diets, hinting at alternative microbial pathways.Gut microbes can activate or deactivate drugs, like antibiotics or digoxin, suggesting microbiomes may explain why drugs work differently across individuals.Ketone bodies like BHB alone can mimic some ketogenic diet effects on the microbiome and immunity, simplifying research and hinting at therapeutic potential.Related episode:M&M #203: Metagenomics, Microbiome Transmission, Gut Microbiome in Health & Disease | Nicola Segata*Not medical advice.Support the showAll episodes, show notes, transcripts, etc. at the M&M Substack Affiliates: Lumen device to optimize your metabolism for weight loss or athletic performance. "I think that it has gotten to a point where we've taken the racing out of racing. We've taken the sport and turned it into something else. Track is about racing. You have eight athletes on the track for a reason. You award a champion or award a winner of the race for a reason: because they outperformed everyone else. And that's not easy. That's one of my fears: that people will start to think that it's easy, because the winner is not really being highlighted for having won. They're being highlighted for having run a personal best. Ultimately, if you're not careful, you end up with this deconstructed competition where it's not about the athletes in the race… We're very excited about what we're bringing...I can't wait. That's what you want. One of the things that's funny to me is when I see people in the track world on social media talking about fantasy matchups. It's like: We have the real fantasy over here. It's real. It's not fantasy. It's actually happening."The countdown is on. We are just one month away from the launch of Grand Slam Track, a bold new league that promises to shake up the sport of track and field—and today, we're talking to the man behind it all, Michael Johnson. We've done multiple episodes with MJ as a four-time Olympic champion, world record holder and one of the most respected voices in the sport. If you haven't listened to those, I suggest you go back and do so. Our 2022 CITIUS MAG Live at Worlds interview with him is one of the best big picture conversations we've done on the state of the sport. Johnson has spent years analyzing what's missing in professional track. His solution? A structured, high-stakes, athlete-driven competition that puts rivalries, personalities, and pure racing at the forefront. With 48 signed Racers, a multi-platform media deal, and a $30 million investment, Grand Slam Track is designed to change how the sport operates, creating a true professional league that's built to last.Today, we dive into:How the league is strategically structuring itself to maximize the talent track What success really looks like in Year 1 from a business standpointInside the TV deal and how it came togetherThe lessons from other sports (even WWE) that can help track engage more fansAnd more on what to expect when the first meet kicks off in KingstonMichael Johnson isn't here to wait for change—he's making it happen. Picture this: you are a marathon runner – but not just any marathon runner. You've got a personal best under 2:45. You're a Stanford grad with a background in computer science and design. Instead of heading off to business school, you decide to start a company – one that's rethinking human metabolism from the ground up. That is the story of Michael Brandt. He's the CEO and co-founder of Ketone-IQ, a company pioneering the future of metabolic health. Their flagship product, Ketone-IQ isn't just a supplement – it's an entirely new category of fuel. In just a few short years, it's taken off. It gained traction with elite athletes, high powered execs, and even the U.S. Department of Defense, which awarded the company – then known as HVMN – a $6 million contract to study how ketones can optimize soldier performance. But Michael's story isn't just about biochemistry and business strategy; it's about thinking differently about seeing opportunity where others see obstacles. It's about choosing to put yourself out there even when it feels uncomfortable and about the unexpected connection between running a business and running a marathon, from testing the limits of human performance to building a multi-million dollar company. “It was just trusting my fitness. It was only my second half marathon coming in… It was a new experience, but it felt familiar to me given all the training that we've done. I felt like I was very prepared to handle what was thrown at me and the unique challenges you get in the half marathon. So coming into Atlanta, I had a lot of confidence.”My guest for today's episode is Alex Maier – a rising star in American distance running who just made a statement at the USATF Half Marathon Championships. In near-freezing conditions and a brutally fast race, Alex surged ahead late to claim his first national title, running 1:00:48 and securing a spot on Team USA for the World Road Running Championships, which we just learned today will not be held in San Diego in September. No reason was given by World Athletics but a new host city is expected to be announced soon.Alex is a former All-American at Oklahoma State and is no stranger to tough courses and big races. But his transition to the roads with Puma Elite has taken him to another level. In this episode, Alex takes us inside his breakthrough win and how his training at OSU, and now with Puma Elite, has set him up for success. “Some of what this journey has been about is just the relentless pursuit of excellence through this gift. I really have made that my mission this year and I hope I can do that for people.”My guest for today's episode is Josh Hoey – one of the most compelling comeback stories in American distance running right now. At just 18 years old, Josh made headlines by turning pro straight out of high school, signing with Adidas after setting the national high school indoor 800m record. But instead of a smooth trajectory to stardom, the years that followed were filled with coaching changes, setbacks, and hard lessons about what it truly takes to succeed at the highest level. Now at 25 years old, Josh is having the season of his life. In just the past month, he broke the American indoor 800m record twice, first at the Millrose Games and then again at the U.S. Indoor Championships this past weekend, where he ran 1:43.24. It's a world leading time and the second-fastest indoor 800m time in history. The win also secured him his first Team USA berth for the upcoming World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China. In this episode, Josh opens up about his rollercoaster journey from the struggles of turning pro at such a young age to finding stability with his coach Justin Rinaldi and a training system that finally clicked for him. We talk about the mental shifts, training breakthroughs, and the faith that has carried him through it all. On today's show, we have a lot to talk about. Josh Hoey just ran 1:43.24 for 800 meters—indoors. That's the second-fastest time ever run indoors, behind only Wilson Kipketer. We'll break down what this means for the American 800m scene, how he's addressed skepticism that inevitably comes with a performance like this and whether Hoey is suddenly a legitimate outdoor medal contender.Hobbs Kessler doubled at USAs, taking both the 3000m and 1500m titles like it was just another weekend at the track. We'll talk about what impressed us the most about Kessler's double, how the men's middle distances are shaping up for 2025 and why it was OK for Cooper Teare and Cole Hocker to skip out.And then there's the "rivalry" that was quickly dispelled by the athletes – Nikki Hiltz vs. Shelby Houlihan. Just a few years ago, Houlihan was untouchable. Then came the four-year ban, and now, she's back—and already battling for the top spot. In the 3000m, Houlihan got to the front, squeezed the pace, and dared anyone to come with her. And Nikki Hiltz? They came with her. And then passed her. In the final strides of the women's 3000m, Hiltz outkicked Houlihan, officially stamping themselves as America's best championship racer in the middle distances.Plus, we'll get into the results of the sprints and why the 2025 World Indoor Championships in Nanjing might be one of the weirdest global meets we've ever seen—between withdrawals, travel logistics, and a US team that's missing some of its biggest stars.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine.
