This week, two genuine wins and a look at who we blame when the going gets tough.A blood-stained front page across three South African newspapers turned period poverty into front-page news — and went global. Brittany Higgins was named Executive Director of Vida Fund, stepping into a leadership role as the organisation gears up for 2028. We unpack "masculinism" — the force Helen Lewis says is uniting the right against women — and ask whether Australia is catching the same trend. Dave Hughes is one of Australia's biggest and best stand-up comedians – and fellow comedians call him 'the GOAT.' A household name who's made sharp wit and larrikin charm his trademark, Hughesy is universally revered by those inside the industry as the comedian's comedian. His career exploded in 1998 with a legendary debut on Hey Hey It's Saturday– so good it was the only stand-up spot replayed on the show's 50th Anniversary Special. From there, he became a breakout star on The Glasshouse, co-founded the iconic Before The Game, delivered unforgettable Hughesy Loses It segments on Rove Live, and was a key pillar in the launch of The Project in 2009, staying for five years. But Dave's never stopped. He's hosted Australia's Got Talent, produced and starred in Hughesy, We Have A Problem, was the only judge to complete all five seasons of Masked Singer Australia, and in 2025 appeared on I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, Taskmaster Australia, and Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation. His life and comedy were also featured on Australian Story – the most viewed episode of 2025. While dominating TV, Dave simultaneously conquered radio. From launching Nova 100's breakfast show in 2001 (which ruled ratings for 13 years) to his national drive show and 2DayFM breakfast stint, he's been a ratings powerhouse for over two decades. Through it all, stand-up remains his true love. He's a road warrior, selling out theatres nationwide for three decades and earning invitations to perform at Montreal's Just For Laughs festival. In 2025, Australians voted Dave the 2nd most popular comedian and radio host in the nation – remarkable for someone who's been essential for almost thirty years. Whether performing for 50 people or millions on TV, Hughesy delivers exactly what audiences come for: big laughs. And he's never lost the common touch – after every show, he patiently takes photos with fans until the last one has gone home, from 9 year olds to 99 year olds and beyond. David is currently touring and also performing at the Melbourne Comedy Festival soon, check out tickets before they sell out! Links below. We chat about his radical mindset shift, Wayne Dwyer and mindset, worries and letting go, his many jobs before comedy and being fired as a dishwasher, ego, giving up alcohol, radio and ratings, newfound view of success, being on the doll, trending on Twitter + so much more! On this episode of MyMusic, host Graham Coath sits down with Dave Balfe and Dave Hughes, part of the creative partnership behind Late Transmissions. The conversation traces their long musical journeys from their early days in bands and the wider music industry to their reunion decades later to create something entirely new together. Drawing inspiration from the grand orchestral pop of the 1960s, the cinematic power of classic film soundtracks, and the storytelling tradition of timeless songs, Late Transmissions set out to build music that feels both dramatic and emotionally rich. Dave Balfe explains how their shared love of artists like Scott Walker and the sweeping arrangements associated with composers such as John Barry helped shape the project, while Dave Hughes discusses the production side—blending orchestral textures, modern studio tools, and his experience in film composition to create a wide sonic palette. They also talk about discovering vocalist Eve, whose powerful voice brought the songs to life and influenced the music's direction, giving the project its distinctive emotional centre. Along the way, the conversation moves through stories from the music business, reflections on how the industry has changed, the realities of making orchestral-scale music today, and the possibilities of where these songs could travel next—from film and television syncs to perhaps even a stage musical. It's a thoughtful, often humorous discussion about songwriting, collaboration, and the enduring power of songs that aim to tell a story and leave a lasting impression.

If I had a time machine, I'd go right back to the start of this recording session just to experience it again. Joining us is "Time Machine" editor Dave Hughes, one of the last remaining original employees at Adult Swim. When he isn't curating Adult Swim Smalls, producing the instant classic Haha, You Clowns, or running the long-standing Off the Air, Dave is building a legendary resume that includes Beavis and Butt-Head, Celebrity Deathmatch, and Space Ghost Coast to Coast. I bet if he had a time machine, he'd go back and do something like invest in Apple in the 90's. But not me, man. Not me. Dave also gave me a rough cut of "Time Machine", which I then blab to you about. Other topics discussed include the limited - yet impactful - vocabulary of calculators, the forgotten history of MTV's groundbreaking animation, and why Bret Michaels is gonna sue my ass back to the stone ages. You know him as the voice of Australian radio, the man dominating stand-up stages across the country and one of Australia's most loved comedians: Hughsey. He’s filled our households with laughter for decades, but today we meet the man behind the comedy curtain. In this deeply personal conversation, Dave opens up about his decision to quit alcohol cold turkey at the young age of 21 - long before he became a household name. He shares the raw reality of his “blackout” drinking, how seeing his father’s struggles with alcohol influenced his path, and his more recent battles with nicotine and workaholism. We delve into the "nature vs. nurture" debate as he navigates parenting his own children, the generational cycle of alcohol in Australian culture and how to authentically talk to young people about addiction. This isn't just a story about quitting; it’s a masterclass in self-awareness, ego-dissolution and finding joy in the simple act of breathing. Dave Hughes has one of the most recognisable voices in the Australian entertainment industry, and has been making people laugh through his stand-up career, radio shows and regular TV appearances for more than 30 years. But in August 2024, his breakfast radio show Hughesy, Ed and Erin was pulled from the air. Then, while he was adjusting to a new, slower pace of life in 2025, Dave broke six ribs and punctured a lung during an AFL charity game in Melbourne. In this episode of the Stellar podcast, Dave explains why getting the sack from radio turned out to be a liberating experience, how he’s feeling almost six months on from his injury, and why he is turning his trauma into comedy gold for his new standup tour, COOKED. Dave Hughes has a complicated relationship with his ego.
Host Kevin Flynn, filling in for Scott Hennen, leads a lively discussion on "What's On Your Mind," covering everything from winter weather and local attractions to national politics and personal finance. The show opens with local news, including the favorable LRC forecast for snow totals this winter and the ranking of Devil's Lake as the number one ice fishing destination in the US. The main focus, however, is the economy, featuring clips from economist Steve Moore and a call from a listener, Dave Hughes, who both dissect the financial landscape, particularly the impact of tax cuts, government spending, and the high cost of living in "blue states." Listeners weigh in heavily via text and calls on a range of topics, including the need for more diesel refineries, the controversy surrounding the Minneapolis police chief's stance on ICE, and the alleged political activities of Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar. A former Congressional candidate and a current State Senate candidate for Minnesota's District 4 call in to share their perspectives on the state's political climate. A special remote check-in from Scott Hennen provides a quick update on a listener Christmas tour in Washington D.C., highlighting visits to the Smithsonian museums, Arlington National Cemetery, and the Lincoln Memorial. In the final segment, Kevin is joined by money manager Brian Cronk to discuss market trends, the impact of recent political news on the economy, and the crucial habits of financial discipline, such as paying down debt and investing early, to secure long-term wealth. Standout Moments 0:00:46: Discussion of the LRC weather forecast, predicting 80-90% of average snow totals this winter. 0:01:21: Shoutout to Devil's Lake for being ranked the #1 ice fishing destination in the US. 0:03:00: Economist Steve Moore discusses the "red-hot" economy and the upcoming tax cuts, claiming the average middle-class family will pay $$1,500$ to $$2,000$ less in income taxes in 2026. 0:04:19: Dave Hughes calls in, agreeing with the economic optimism but arguing that the core problem of Congressional spending is "completely broken." 0:10:04: A listener, Andrew, calls in expressing disappointment over the Zach Brown Band's recent performance imagery at the Vegas Sphere, claiming they've "gone to the woke side." 0:16:32: Scott Hennen checks in from Washington D.C. with an update on the listener Christmas tour, mentioning visits to Arlington National Cemetery and a special briefing at the White House political shop. 0:22:42: Brian Cronk joins to discuss the market, agreeing…
