The Living End are one of the few bands ever to successfully negotiate the chasm between punk rock sensibilities and mainstream success without losing their integrity.Their 1997 EP Prisoner Of Society/Second Solution quickly became the barometer for musical uprising amongst the youth of the world, catapulting the band into the spotlight, from which they have never strayed far.Last year saw The Living End celebrate the 25th anniversary of that breakthrough EP, with the band having all but separated themselves from that chaotic side to their nature without ever losing the trust and respect of their fans.2024 has seen the band perform at a selection of different festivals, all with vastly different demographics yet united by one cause.Music.After wowing crowds at the Mundi Mundi Bash recently, The Living End next set their sights on the open sea as part of Rock The Boat 2024 and now find themselves closing out the year as part of Good Things 2024. It is a fitting reward for effort for the hard rocking trio, with frontman Chris Cheney understandably content when HEAVY caught up with him ahead of the first show.Good Things Festival hits Sydney on December 7 before moving to Brisbane for the final show on December 8.Tickets and more details: https://goodthingsfestival.com.au/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kyra-Jade CoombsIn my opinion, The Living End are a staple in the Australian music scene. They have graciously given us 8 albums and if you break them down over the years, you find hit after hit. Their debut album (self-titled) is one of those albums you can play start to finish and happily immerse yourself right into their music and feel nothing but pure joy.HEAVY took the chance to have a chat with singer/ guitar player Chris Cheney to see what's new in the world of The Living End…From the 15-17 of August The Living End are playing the sold-out Mundi Mundi Bash in Broken Hill with a few other huge names like Baby Animals (my absolute favourite!), James Reyne, Jon Stevens, Ian Moss, Daryl Braithwaite and Diesel to name a few. The fact that it has sold out in outback Broken Hill is amazing news for a health check of our Australian music industry. We are slowly getting back on track.Chris immediately laughed, saying it's surreal that although he grew up listening to most of these guys; he never thought he would see the day where he could call them mates and share the stage with them. A far cry from starting out and playing the front bar of the Epsy!Fans would be happy to hear that they are chipping away at creating their 9th album, and it's said to be ‘the most aggressive album' they have put together in years. If you jump onto The Living End social media, you can see a few behind the scenes shots that look like a bunch of fun.I must admit, I was absolutely stoked to be able to interview Chris. I had 1000 questions to ask him and could honestly chat for hours. We covered lots of cool shit like playing in Australia's golden days of the Big Day Out tours, getting rotation Triple J and appearing on Recovery – Channel [V] to having that telepathic connections with his band mates, giving way to improve jams that can either be a trainwreck or magic, in his words! You'll get a glimpse into his creative space, where he's got a set-up to appease any creative mood. An area for producing music, painting and even a bar. What more could you want, really?Being someone who's so passionate about music, I wondered what band or album Chris would give his younger self, or bring to his attention earlier if he could go back in time. To my surprise, he said early Cold Chisel… I guess I just assumed that would have been a staple. Yet of course being someone who grew up smashing the shredders of the world like Eddie Van Halen then going onto 50s music, Aussie pub rock wasn't the path they were on, nor wanted to. Which is interesting to think about the full circle moment from starting out as a young band being told to ‘play Aussie rock' to being put on the huge bills with the original Australian pub rock music pioneers and staying true to who they are.Chris is a very humble guy and genuinely - so stoked to have reached the status that they have today with The Living End. He is the kind of person you want as a role model for young musicians and says there's a space for every type of music, which sings true to his kind nature. The Living End boys still have “a lot of fuel in the tank” and thankfully aren't showing signs of slowing down!If you were lucky enough to secure a ticket to the Mundi Mundi Bash then get out there and have the time of your life! And if you didn't then that will teach you not to sleep on a good thing!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Born Christopher John Cheney in 1975, Chris graduated with a VCE from Wheelers Hill Secondary College. Chris played guitar since age 6 and studied jazz at Box Hill Tafe in 1994-95. However, it was at a barbecue Chris' was introduced by his sister to Scott Owen. In 1992 they formed a cover band called 'The Runaway Boys' taken from a Stray Cats song of the same name which performed covers of the band's songs with the odd original song thrown in. In 1994 he got his first album with The Living End who formed with a drummer called Joe Piripitzi who was later kicked out for musical differences. In 1995 the EP 'Hellbound' was released and The Living End was made. In 1996 they released another EP called 'It's For Your Own Good' and had success by sending a T-shirt to Green Day for a gig as their supporting act. In 1997 after Joe was replaced with new drummer Trav Demsey, The Living End cut their first single, entitled "Prisoner Of Society/Second Solution". Two songs from their debut album. This followed up with more success of their self-titled album 'The Living End'. In 2000 this followed with the album 'Roll On'. In 2001 Chris was involved in a severe car accident with his girlfriend Emma who escaped with minor injuries but left Chris in a wheelchair with a broken leg and 3 pins to replace some of the muscle that was damaged. After 2 years of resting and writing songs for the new album they were back in the studio where Trav quit due to a disliking of heavy touring and to spend more time with his family. The Living End were stranded. They spent two days auditioning 40 drummers of which the first was Andy Strachan. Their current drummer. The boys hit the studio and recorded a 14 track album entitled 'Modern ARTillery' which was released in 2003. In 2004 the boys hit the studio once more to record 2 more tracks, "I Can't Give You What I Haven't Got" and "Bringin' It All Back Home". This was a greatest hits album called 'From Here On In: The Singles (1997-2004)'. The same year he formed tribute super group The Wrights with Nic Cester (Jet) - Bernard Fanning (Powderfinger) - Phil Jamieson (Grinspoon) - Kram (Spiderbait) - Davey Lane (You Am I/The Pictures) and Pat Bourke (Dallas Crane). He performed with the band as the lead and rhythm guitarist for parts 1 and 3 respectively and later released Stevie Wrights hit Evie with all three songs of "Evie: (Let You Hair Hang Down)", "Evie: (Evie)" which Chris was not involved with and "Evie: (I'm Losing You)". It wasn't until 2005 the boys hit the studio again to record the fifth album entitled "State Of Emergency" released in 2006. After almost a year and a half of touring Chris left the band and took up yoga and painting while his other band mates hit the surf. It wasn't until late 2007 that they hit the studio again to write and rehearse songs which resulted in the band's sixth studio album 'White Noise' with a single of the same name. Since then the boys have been performing to the general public throughout Australia, Japan, USA and more.

We all remember where we were when we heard that debut album for the Living End - usually near a radio when "Prisoner of Society" was released. That album debuted at number one and stayed in the ARIA chart for 83 weeks - insane by any standards. 25 years since its release, frontman Chris Cheney reflects on the creation of the album: “I think unknowingly our destination was always this; this album right here. All songs led here. All the gigs and all the songs we'd written and rejected over the years, all the lessons we'd learned had been building up to this….our first album.” “Ultimately what we captured was a melting pot full of our influences but not to the extent that we sounded confused,” Cheney continued. “The way we played glued it all together. Stylistically, it had punk (‘West End Riot'), metal (‘Growing Up Falling Down'), pop (‘I Want a Day'), rockabilly (‘Second Solution'), hillbilly thrash on steroids (‘Prisoner of Society'), jazz (‘Fly Away'), ska (‘Trapped' and ‘All Torn Down'), swampy surf twang (‘Bloody Mary'), country pickin' and anything else we thought we could throw at it.” The Living End celebrate this album with a huge show in Melbourne and a special vinyl re-release of the album with some cool extras. About Slim Jim Phantom As the legendary drummer for the Stray Cats, Slim Jim Phantom, alongside bandmates Brian Setzer and Lee Rocker, spearheaded the neo-rockabilly movement of the early 80s. With a love for 50's Rock and Roll, the Stray Cats took inspiration from that bygone era and mixed with their youthful energy and aggression to produce the updated hard-edged rockabilly sound that saw them conquer London, Europe and later the U.S., gaining fans among the likes of Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, and Robert Plant along the way. In addition to the Stray Cats, Jim has worked with some of the world's top artists. He has played a part in many successful groups – notably Phantom, Rocker and Slick (featuring long time David Bowie guitarist Earl Slick) which produced two popular albums; and Dead Men Walking, an all-star affair which has boasted original members of The Sex Pistols, The Cult and Big Country among the rotating line-up. Jim also enjoyed a stint playing with the rock-n-roll originator, Jerry Lee Lewis, and even performed in a now-mythological band called The Cheap Dates with acting legend Harry Dean Stanton, one of Jim's longtime pals. Jim has worked on numerous other projects, including his own explosive self-named roots-rock trio, and HeadCat, co-starring Lemmy Kilmister and Danny B. Harvey, and Jim's musical project The Jack Tars, a band co-founded with old friends, and former Dead Men Walking bandmates Captain Sensible and Mike Peters and SJP's long time true rockabilly pal Chris Cheney of Australia's top rockin' band The Living End. He is also deeply committed to charitable works, too: he climbed both Mount Everest and Mount Kilimanjaro for Love Hope Strength Foundation (an organization co-founded by Mike Peters of The Alarm that benefits cancer research).  Jim hosts Rockabilly Rave Up on Little Steven's Underground Garage on SiriusXM. He is known as "The Honest Mechanic," where he features new rockabilly acts and the classics.
