If your goal in life is to be happy, I hate to break it to you, but your life is going to be pretty f*cked up. Because happiness isn't goal. It's a feeling. And feelings are not permanent. They shift. They change. They're always in motion. So if the goal is a thing that doesn't stick, I'm always going to be in some state of dissatisfaction, of failure.Perhaps a bit ironic a view from someone whose main investor in her business, Tony Hsieh, wrote a book called “Delivering Happiness.”. Truth is, Tony and his “goal” are the perfect example of just how twisted and wrong it is to believe that happiness is the goal.He sought it. He struggled for it. In the end, the inability to find it, to be lonely, isolated and utterly cut off amidst being surrounded by an army of people, was a big part of what drove his death.Don't worry, this week's podcast isn't a macabre view of death, rather it's a view of how by paying attention to our dogs, we can get the view of happiness that can stick, that CAN serve as a path to a happier life.In a world where what passes for radical honesty usually means someone is just letting things fly outta their pie-hole without much care for others, it's time for radically authentic conversation. Conscious communication is simple, but often isn't easy. That's why Cathy Brooks created Talk, Unleashed – a weekly podcast of radically honest conversation about — everything. Whether her own musings or in conversation with industry leaders, each episode invites curiosity. Curiosity not about what people do, but why they do it. Who they are and what makes them tick. It's about digging underneath to reveal the thing that is most true - that we are more alike than we are not. A mix of solo episodes where Cathy shares her insights and experience or Cathy engaged in conversation with fascinating humans doing amazing things. No matter the format - it's unvarnished, radically honest and entirely unleashed. This podcast compliments Unleashed Leadership, the coaching business through which Cathy works with symphony orchestras, corporate clients, and individuals to help them unleash and untether their leadership and connect with others in a way that truly engages.#tonyhsieh #deliveringhappiness #happinessnotagoal #addiction #tonyhsiehdeath #brutalhonesty #radicalhonesty #consciouscommunication #leadership #Conversation #connection #TalkUnleashed #fiercecompassion #UnleashedConversation #UnleashedLeadership #FixYourEndofTheLeash

How do you create lasting happiness in your life and career? More importantly, how do you take responsibility for it? In this episode of Reflect Forward, I explore why happiness is a worthy goal and why you must take ownership of your well-being. I reflect on my fireside chat with Jenn Lim, CEO of Delivering Happiness and author of Beyond Happiness, to discuss how true happiness is cultivated through purpose, progress, and deep connections—not just quick dopamine hits. Happiness and leadership are closely linked. Unhappy leaders create disengaged teams, while fulfilled leaders inspire innovation and growth. Workplace culture thrives when individuals take ownership of their happiness and well-being. In this episode, Jenn and I explore the mindset shifts and daily habits that help leaders and employees build sustainable happiness, resilience, and fulfillment in work and life. Key Takeaways • Happiness is a choice and a skill. It requires effort, mindset shifts, and intentional action. • Dopamine vs. sustainable happiness. Quick dopamine hits (social media, alcohol, shopping) provide momentary pleasure but do not lead to long-term well-being. True fulfillment comes from purpose, progress, and relationships. • Leadership and happiness are interconnected. When leaders take responsibility for their happiness, they set the tone for an engaged, motivated workplace culture. • Use the “LIT Framework” to define your purpose. Light (what excites you), Impact (how you contribute), and Talent (what you excel at) help align your career and life with what brings fulfillment. • Self-care is a discipline, not a luxury. Leaders and professionals must prioritize their mental, physical, and emotional well-being to show up fully. • Gratitude creates a ripple effect. Regularly expressing gratitude strengthens team culture, improves relationships, and enhances personal happiness. This episode is essential for leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals looking to improve workplace engagement, personal fulfillment, and resilience. Happiness at work leads to higher productivity, stronger collaboration, and a healthier company culture. Michael delves into our guest's startup journey, their perception of success, industry reconsideration, and the pivotal stress point during business expansion. They discuss the joys of small business growth, vital entrepreneurial habits, and strategies for team building, encompassing wins, blunders, and invaluable advice. And a snapshot of the final five Grow A Small Business Questions: What do you think is the hardest thing in growing a small business? Frank Greef identifies the hardest part of growing a small business as dealing with the "unknown unknowns." These are the unpredictable challenges that lie beneath the surface—issues you can't foresee that bring unexpected mental and emotional demands. He describes these surprises as the “iceberg below” that can catch business owners off-guard, emphasizing how they can create stress and roadblocks. This focus on the hidden challenges highlights the importance of resilience and adaptability in business growth. What's your favourite business book that has helped you the most? Frank Greef's favorite business books include The 10X Rule by Grant Cardone for mindset, Elon Musk by Walter Isaacson for innovation, and Delivering Happiness by Tony Hsieh for customer experience, each shaping his approach to growth and impact. Are there any great podcasts or online learning resources you'd recommend to help grow a small business? Frank Greef recommends The Diary of a CEO for its insightful conversations, though he notes its recent shift in focus. For business-specific advice, he highlights Alex Hormozi's Acquisition.com, where Hormozi shares actionable strategies for scaling from zero to multi-million-dollar revenues. What tool or resource would you recommend to grow a small business? Frank Greef suggests that the best tool is self-learning paired with accountability. Instead of just consuming information, he emphasizes implementing what you learn immediately, testing its impact, and adapting as needed—turning knowledge into actionable growth for your business. What advice would you give yourself on day one of starting out in business? Frank Greef's advice to his day-one self in business would be, “You've got this, little buddy!” Acknowledging the journey as a challenging yet rewarding roller coaster, he emphasizes resilience and faith in one's ability to overcome the unknowns that lie ahead.

De ondertitel is Tony Hsieh, Zappos and the Myth of Happiness in Silicon Valley.

In this episode, Steve Fretzin and Jordan Ostroff discuss:How business planning and life planning are more similar than you might think. Building a life that makes you happy. Helping yourself make the right choices, not the wrong ones. Achieving multiple outcomes from the same action (not multitasking). Tuna are like the tigers of the ocean: apex predators essential for oceanic health. And just like with tigers, humanity has been waging an unprovoked war on tuna, causing their numbers to plummet in recent decades. They may not be furry, but these finned beasts still need help, and help them is exactly what Impact Food is seeking to do. Founded in 2021 by a few recent UC-Berkely grads interested in doing something good for the world, the company has embarked on a journey to recreate whole muscle seafood without the fish. In fact, their CEO, Kelly Pan, is so interested in doing good in the world that she's a regular listener of this very show. So when I met Kelly at the Reducetarian conference in May 2022, I knew I'd be cheering her on, and I'm very glad to have her as a guest on this episode. Impact Food has now raised about $1 million in venture backing, gotten onto menus in California, including Pokeworks—the largest poke chain in the US—and is now raising a seed round to bring their whole muscle alt-tuna to thousands of menus nationwide. Kelly tells her tale in this episode, including her past entrepreneurial endeavors and what she's seeking to accomplish now. I think you'll be impressed! Discussed in this episode: Impact Food was born out of the UC-Berkeley Alt-Meat Lab. Impact Food then moved to KitchenTown in San Mateo, Calif. Paul's blog on how food waste alters meat demand. Kelly recommends the book Delivering Happiness. More about Kelly Pan Kelly Pan is the Co-Founder & CEO of Impact Food. She is a foodie turned entrepreneur on a mission to build a more sustainable and resilient food system. With a degree from UC Berkeley-Haas School of Business, Kelly has led multiple interdisciplinary teams and launched impact-driven projects, including a skincare brand and a pro-bono consulting organization for small businesses. Through Impact Food, Kelly envisions a future of food that can reliably feed a growing global population while keeping fish in the oceans. She and her team are leveraging plants and biotechnology to create the most delicious and nutritious whole cut seafood alternatives. She is excited to bring tasty and accessible Impact Food to the masses.

In today's episode, our guest is Jenn Lim. She is a global workplace expert, bestselling author, speaker, executive coach, and the CEO and co-founder of Delivering Happiness [DH], a company that grows purpose-driven organizations with more profitable and sustainable approaches to business. Jenn launched two bestselling books—Delivering Happiness in 2010 and authored Beyond Happiness: How Authentic Leaders Prioritize Purpose and People for Growth and Impact. [3:40] Why should I listen to you? I just love real talk. I simply prefer to dive in sooner than most people, and I enjoy getting to know people on a personal level. So the only way I think I can do that is by expressing myself from the core. We had meaningful conversations where I learned a lot of things. I learned more about how to implement sustainable scientific happiness in my company. [5:28] Where did that pop out for you? I think multiple levels, but the most important is my inner circle. We had to sit and talk to ourselves; some saw this as a good thing, while others saw it as a bad thing. We had conversations about setting the right priorities, doing the right thing, and lots more. [8:48] Can you break down the birth of this idea? I launched a book with Tony Shea, the late CEO of zappos.com in 2010 and the book was titled delivering happiness. We didn't have an idea about how well it did and realized there was a demand for happiness in the world. Tony co-founded a company called delivering happiness and the purpose was to help other organizations focus on how to create happy environments for the staff and customers. If there is happiness in an organization, you'll have a more sustainable profitable business. At the end of 2020, I lost my co-founder and one of my best buds. It's not just about sharing all these stories but how we made all these organizations happier, more productive, and more profitable. Right now, it's more than just happiness but reinforcing the perception of happiness. [12:35] Do you mind sharing some of your lows? There was a time I lost my job, lost my title, lost my status, 911 happened and in that same year, my dad got diagnosed with stage three colon cancer. I eventually lost my dad and that shaped me into figuring out what is meaningful to me and I found out that it's a misalignment of values. So I shifted from money to the values that are dear and near to me. I had meaningful relationships that got me into the place of exploring. It wasn't even happiness at that time but how to ground and stabilize ourselves in a world that is uncertain and unpredictable. [15:15] What do you recommend for people who are currently going through their darkest and low moments? When Tony died, the book was already due, but luckily the publisher gave me a little bit more time. But during that time, I was too weak to do anything. I was at my lowest and depressed. When you talk to people about it, they try to cheer you up and recommend some quotes that will help you, but that does not really help. What really helps is picking up a mirror, looking inward, and seeing what you've done in the past when you were at your lowest. Reflect on how you got through those times. So processing and reflecting on your own abilities helps you get your resilience back. [20:25] How would you define happiness, and then go beyond it? We kind of base happiness on scientific research and data, and we try to bring academics into real life. What we've learned from that is that there are different types of happiness, including pleasure and all those things related to it. However, the most sustainable form of happiness is purpose. We hear that all the time, so it's basically being part of something bigger than yourself. From a scientific standpoint, there are various ways to increase internal happiness, such as having a sense of autonomy and development. So if you are thinking of what you may do, have more control, more progress, more connections, or enhance that sense of greater purpose. [23:12] In your journey, did you find something that can also lead to happiness? When I completed the book, it was a moment of pride. I was able to complete it in an honorable way, which is like an achievement, and that is a natural part of what we want to do as human beings. It's just good to look at what you've accomplished and be proud of yourself. [31:03] What has the work turned into over time? We are still helping organizations, companies, governments, and hospitals around the world implement change. One of the silver liners is that we can now embed conversations about mental health. The last few years have deepened the stuff that we've done so that people understand that it's not just rainbows and unicorns. People want to show up as themselves. Authenticity is the number one happiness and then we feel that sense of progress and purpose and how we can do that on a day-to-day basis. A lot of people are obsessed with leaving a legacy, and to me, that's not what it's all about. It's living the legacy today instead of thinking about what you're going to leave behind. [36:30] What are you passionate about now? The last three years have been pretty much about getting better. Right now, we are looking at the outlook. There have been talks of an impending recession, and there will be some unexpected events this year. But what I think is cool about this particular time is that people are more ready and open than ever to being curious, courageous, and creative about themselves. Humanity is more ready than ever to receive something more than usual. We are ready to receive ourselves and each other. [41:50] What promise did God make to the world when he created you? I will have the opportunity and the choice to show up and be who I was born to be. “Even when you think something is set in stone—literal, actual stone—it changes.” Take it from actor-turned-entrepreneur and rock-climbing aficionado Ryan Devlin: successful pivots involve constant micro-adjustments. Even when you feel most stuck, you can find a new way forward, but you'll need to double down on your unique skills and abilities. I had so much fun chatting with Ryan about starting his give-back company, This Saves Lives, and his journey from a successful actor living the Hollywood life to an experimental entrepreneur piloting a new podcast based on his passion. Ryan shares why chasing celebrity can be a slippery slope, how getting used to rejection helps with business-building, contributing to something bigger than you, finding flow, and why getting bored in your career isn't always bad. More About Ryan: Ryan Devlin is a social entrepreneur, rock climbing enthusiast, and actor known for roles on shows like Brothers & Sisters, Veronica Mars, Cougar Town, Jane the Virgin, and Grey's Anatomy. He hosts The Struggle Climbing podcast, where climbers share their struggles and breakthroughs in nutrition, training, tactics, and the mental game. He is also co-founder of This Saves Lives, a company dedicated to feeding children and helping them thrive.
Jenn Lim is a global workplace expert, bestselling author, speaker, executive coach, and the CEO and Cofounder of Delivering Happiness. In this episode, Jenn joins Nick to talk about the value of instilling a culture of happiness, and why we need to focus upon not just the best for our clients and people, but also ourselves. KEY TAKEAWAYS The best leaders are those who remain curious enough to feel comfortable with exploring a new set of decisions. That is when the greatest growth occurs. These days we have to be far more mindful of the state of the world than ever before. External factors are affecting people far more then they did pre-pandemic. We need to raise our awareness levels. Always celebrate the wins when they happen, but don't take your eyes off what you can fix in the long term to make life easier. If we truly want to see things in a more progressive way, then we need to be able to have conversations about mental health and wellbeing. BEST MOMENTS 'Listen very attentively to what is going on' 'The difference between a great and good leader is their level of curiosity' 'People are tired of hearing the same old spiel. They want real talk' 'People are actually investments' VALUABLE RESOURCES Scale Up with Nick Bradley: scaleup.vip/podcast Scale Up Your Business, coaching/consulting: https://suyb.global To download a free gift from Nick - The 5 Reasons Why Your Business Will Never Get To 8-Figures ... The last time Allen Walton was on the show he talked about the origins of his e-commerce business SpyGuy grew out of a difficult period when he was living in his parents' basement struggling to make a living. Today Allen talks to Dan about some of the challenges he's had which, despite the considerable success, has caused him to consider if it's time to re-orientate what he's doing and focus more on his new venture FlyGuy: “Spy Guy is a hard business to run. Like a lot of e-commerce businesses we've been facing supply chain problems, shipping shortages, our costs have really gone up … And I think about Tony Hsieh's book ‘Delivering Happiness', he talks about poker playing, and how you could sit at a table and you might just keep losing, losing, losing against the people you're playing with. One of the best things you might do is just get up and move over to another table. You might find out that you're playing way better there. And I kind of feel like that might be the case for me”. And, later in the show, Allen gamely agrees to play our favorite fun challenge: ‘Donate A Business Idea'.
