New York has become the sixth state to legalize human composting, behind Washington, Colorado, Oregon, Vermont, and California. The process involves placing straw and wood chips into a container with the body and allowing it to decompose over time. Touted as a ‘green' form of dealing with death, one in which carbon emissions can be reduced from processes such as cremation - which involves an estimated 540 pounds of carbon dioxide - or typical burial practices using embalming fluid, concrete, wood, etc., can be replaced, human composting has opposition. The idea here is that not only is the human dirty, sickly and polluting while alive, but even after death we still continue to destroy the planet - hence why carbon dioxide is the focus rather than the simpler notion that we could just be reabsorbed into the earth in an ‘green burial'. 540 pounds so that family can have an urn with ashes is nothing compared to a one hour flight in a private jet which emits over 2200 pounds of the same stuff. There is no doubt that modern funerary practices use toxic chemicals and other resources, but this is not about anything ‘green'; it's about ideology. It's a distortion of life, a degrading of the human in the spiritual hierarchy, and a demeaning practice meant to offset C02 for the wealthy who can afford to pay for credits. Whether Christian, Muslim, or Jew, all agree that the body is sacred, as is the blood, and therefore it should be preserved as such after death. From cleanliness and exercise while alive, to preservation after death, the body is considered sacred in virtually every spiritual practice. But with modern scientific materialism, animation of the corporeal is reduced to spiritual fiction.

Whether Christian Nationalism Misrepresents Jesus As Jonathan Leeman Supposes

Jonathan Leeman, Editorial Director at 9Marks, published an article at that website on October 31st. Titled '“Christian Nationalism” Misrepresents Jesus, So We Should Reject It,' and his piece was subsequently sent to me by JP Chavez, my neighbor two houses down. What do I find in reading it? Only that Leeman argues for dropping the label ‘Christian Nationalism' on the grounds that many people can't tell the difference between two distinct ways of meaning the term. On the one hand, there are those like him who hold that Christianity should influence our nation and its laws; on the other hand, others suppose our nation and government should actually identify as Christian. Yet Leeman takes the second possibility to mean that those who agree with it are wishing the government of the United States would establish a state church, or that they mistakenly suppose it's just that easy to convert a whole country to personal faith in Christ. Yet I know I at least am not arguing for the state to establish a church. And that being the case, Leeman would likely put me in the influencers category. But I also know that I am under no illusions that a Christian nation, so-called, either requires or else claims that all the citizens or residents of that nation are themselves Christians. For his part, Leeman seems deeply troubled by at least some particular kinds of slippery slopes, at least when he spots them in certain quarters. Yet I wonder if this concern must apply equally to all sides in these kinds of debates, or else not at all. Avoidance of slippery slopes can become its own slippery slope, after all. Wondering aside, the ideal is not to resign ourselves to passive influence. We ought to want that all our countrymen would really and truly become Christians, and that our nation might be one which God might in His infinite goodness and grace both bless and prosper. And as it seems to me, every square inch of progress in that direction is desirable. Otherwise, what would we suppose the jackpot scenario is in which Christian influence might come to full fruition? How identity might not be the most desirable outcome of Christian influence is admittedly lost on me. Contrary to what Leeman seems to think, I have never understood those who say America formerly was a Christian nation to mean that all Americans were ever Christians at any point in our history. But we do not need to say that every last man, woman, and child in America is a Christian in order to say that America is a Christian nation, any more than we would say that every citizen of China must be a communist in order to call that country a communist nation, or that every citizen of Saudi Arabia must be a Muslim to call that country a Muslim nation. That is, we all understand in these other cases what is being said. So why doesn't Leeman understand what proponents of so-called Christian nationalism for America are saying? Conversely, not every citizen of the United States of America need be a secular humanist, pluralist, or Progressive for us to say these terms have typified the kind of country the U.S. has been for at least several decades. Yet I suppose by Leeman's reasoning, we all must be, if that is what is said of America right now. Or, what? Is America a kind of Schrodinger's cat? Theologically, philosophically, politically, socially - do the rules change depending on whether we are calling for a maintenance of the current status quo, or championing a return to Christian morality? I have so many questions. Yet in the meantime, between now and if, or when, Mr. Leeman answers them, I must reject his argument. In claiming that Christian nationalism misrepresents Jesus, I dare say Mr. Leeman misrepresents Christian nationalism. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

Episode 25 – Dangerously Immersed in Ourselves: Chopin’s “The Awakening”

Prose and Context

Kate Chopin’s The Awakening—“Dangerously Immersed in Ourselves” By Karen E.B. Elliott   I remember the first time I read this book.  It was back in college was I was earning my B.A. at a liberal arts, secular school.  I loved the novel.  It intrigued me.  Perhaps it was because I identified with the main character as much as I could at the time; however, I certainly wasn’t married yet.  I had not been pregnant nor had children to care for.  As a woman I was allowed to vote and express basically any opinion I had as a woman. But exactly like the main character, I was white;  I was raised with privilege in zipcodes my parents chose carefully in which to live in order to guarantee me of sustaining that privilege.  So in that case, I complete “got” Kate Chopin’s main character. I can recall my male professor’s interpretation of the ending (which I quickly came to learn is mostly everyone’s interpretation), and it just didn’t sit well with me. Even though I really liked him, I felt he was trying too hard—to please the women in the room—as if to say, “Hey ladies, I’m with you on this one.”  He, like many of my professors, whether male or female, were self-proclaimed feminists.  I, too, was a self-proclaimed feminist, but as a Christian.  And that’s a hard one to explain or justify to the secular cynic or faithful Christ-follower.   The interpretation of Edna’s apparent suicide (spoiler alert!) at the novel’s end appears to be read out of context in a frightening post-modern analysis of literature—where our feelings about the text (or any text) determine its meaning. This approach raises serious questions, and any self-proclaimed intellectual would raise his or her eyebrows when anyone looks at a text in this manner.  Interestingly enough, however, this is exactly what Edna does with her own life.  Although Chopin wrote this at the turn of the 20th century, her main character is incredibly post-modern, and more accurately, Edna is the post-modern middle to upper class American.  Whether Christian or secular, Edna represents the typical American who already has it all—everything’s going for her—but she wants more. Despite her education and wealth, she is trapped, but not by the very oppressive, anti-woman Louisiana society in which she lives—she is trapped by her inability to bow down to anyone or anything larger than herself.  It is evident as the reader travels through her consciousness that she has an acute sense of God and His presence; in fact, she admits that “the Holy Ghost [has] vouchsafed wisdom” within her youthful mind and soul, but she is seduced by her own desires to do whatever she wants, no matter who it hurts (13). Kate Chopin’s craft and technique is nothing short of inspiring. On the surface she appears to be a transcendentalist as Edna goes to the water and within nature to find herself—to find the answers of life—but she does no transcending of any kind; in fact, Chopin turns on her reader in not-so-subtle ways.  Although at first, nature seems to “speak to the soul. The touch of the sea is sensuous, enfolding the body in its soft, close embrace,” and yet, when Edna enters the ocean with the intent to transcend, Chopin reminds the reader that the sea is not Edna’s native element; she had “attempted all summer to learn to swim. She had received instructions from both the men and women; in some instances even the children…A certain ungovernable dread hung about her when in the water, unless there was a hand nearby that might reach out and reassure her” (13; 27).   Chopin furthers the futility of Edna’s efforts with her strong description of the ocean, and she intentionally recycles phrases—reuses them—particularly at the novel’s end so that her reader will be reminded of what’s really happening to her character.  Like the natural elements, Chopin seduces her reader and invites them to look at nature’s veneer.  She describes the sea as swelling “lazily in broad billows,

Whether Christian or not, religious or not, "spiritual" or not, at some point everybody wrestles with the problem of evil, and why bad things happen in life.  Is there something called "justice," is it all random? Is there any guarantee that good wins in the end, and does some force, govern everything that happens in the world?  Followers of Jesus ask the same questions, of course, but have the challenge of making sense of evil in the world while also believing that there is a God who is both all-good, and all-powerful, and yet who allows all sorts of things to happen that seem to fly in the face of God's good will.  How are we going to face the challenges of life and make sense of where God is when terrible things happen, whether to us, or to people we care about, or halfway around the world? To explore these questions, pastors Steve and Erica are starting a new series that looks at some of the big persistent questions that Christians have to wreslte with, and in this first part, the conversation is a lot like opening a big can of worms.  Taking a look at different angles and different ways of asking the question, these two friends in Christ start looking at how followers of Jesus can look together at the brokenness of the world and the reality of our suffering and try and make sense of God's presence there. Listen in, and help us think through the Big Questions.
