Claire gives advice on how to work through salary negotiations, and why it’s still appropriate to ask for a raise during a pandemic. Claire also talks about her relationship with a well-known congresswoman and uses her experience to justify why you should never be afraid to pursue your wildest dreams. “You can assume the best about companies- that they are trying to be fair. My guest today is Claire Lehmann, the founder and editor-in-chief of Quillette, a for-profit online magazine that publishes essays on topics like politics, science, and academia. We started our conversation talking about Quilette's business model and the niche it occupies on the Internet. Then, we moved on to societal topics like the longevity of bureaucracies, the pros and cons of standardized tests, and what Claire would change about childhood education. ____________________________ Show Notes 1:31 - Why Claire believes being a for-profit instead of a non-profit gives her and her company more freedom. 5:32 - What Quillette has learned through publishing so many submitted articles over the years. 10:15 - The relationship between free speech and innovation. 13:12 - What we can learn from how Russia handled scientific experimentation and their lack of freedom to critique it. 15:08 - Why one of the biggest flaws Claire sees with higher education is that it seems necessary for people to go. 20:17 - How higher education is only creating academics and not lifelong students. 23:32 - Why organizations may have a lifecycle and how it plays into the problems that come with their extended growth. 29:45 - Why Claire believes literacy in subjects like psychology and statistics is massively underrated. 34:55 - What Enlightenment-era values are justly held in high regard, and which we may need to reconsider in the modern age. 40:54 - The historical reasons why intellectualism is not a strong value in Australia. 43:46 - What Claire has learned about childhood education through her time at Quillette, and why she believes younger children need to spend most of their time learning facts. 51:04 - Why standardized testing is beneficial for children from underprivileged families. 55:37 - What Claire believes to be her strengths in both her personal and business life. 58:12 - What about the book "The Custom And The Country" makes Claire love it so much. 1:01:42 - What it may mean for our brains as we possibly move into a "post-literate" society. 1:05:03 - Claire's favorite articles she's ever hosted on Quillette.

Continuing with our women and money series, we are thrilled to share this recent interview with Claire Pelletreau—a Facebook Ads expert who runs a six-figure online business and hosts The Get Paid Podcast.   As you may infer from the name of her show, Claire loves to talk about all things money. Once a week, she sits down with entrepreneurs and asks them tough and very personal questions about their businesses. A standout from these episodes is her tradition of asking guests what they pay themselves—a question that most people would admit is quite uncomfortable.   In this episode, Claire shares insights about her own business journey and reveals what it’s like to ask her guests about money. We also get into why Claire believes paid ads are so important and how she manages her own success.   We absolutely love Claire's work and we both listen to EVERY episode of her show. It is so affirming and enlightening and we are grateful for her contribution to the broader money conversation. Enjoy the episode!   Key Points From This Episode:     Asking the questions that no one seems to want to ask on a podcast.   How Claire started work as a freelancer while employed elsewhere.   Finding early guests for the podcast who were comfortable talking about money.   Why Claire still gets nervous asking what people pay themselves.   Unpacking a particular person's story and looking beyond a snapshot.   Claire's younger years, career dreams, and how she came into entrepreneurship.   Discovering money mindsets and how important this moment was for Claire's journey.   Claire's current money goals; why she is currently focussing on income over revenue.   Business scaling and why ads are so essential.   Claire's family, friends and social community; their reactions to her success.   The divide between online entrepreneurs and the rest of the world.   The most surprising elements of hosting a podcast about money.    This week's top of mind question round with Claire!   Claire's joy and hustle recommendations.   And much more!   Links Mentioned in Today’s Episode:   Become and Online Teacher — https://www.soulful.mba/teacher Namastream — https://namastream.com/ Brooke Castillo — https://thelifecoachschool.com/ Brooke Castillo on The Get Paid Podcast — https://clairepells.com/63/ Nathan Barry — https://nathanbarry.com/ ConvertKit — https://convertkit.com/ Denise Duffield Thomas — https://denisedt.com/ Get Rich, Lucky Bitch — https://www.amazon.com/Get-Rich-Lucky-Bitch-Release-ebook/dp/B00BSG124I Crazy Rich Asians — https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16085481-crazy-rich-asians     Joy: Show Your Work Podcast — https://laineygossipentertainment.libsyn.com/ Hustle: Instagram + Facebook Ads   Connect with Claire Claire Pelletreau — https://clairepells.com/ The Get Paid Podcast — https://clairepells.com/category/podcast/

Claire Pelletreau is a Facebook + Instagram ads expert and host of the the Get Paid Podcast. I discovered Claire back in 2015 when I had just started my business and started to figure out that there was this whole world of online entrepreneurs helping each other learn what they needed to learn to actually get traction and grow their businesses online. I came across her in Becca Tracey’s Uncaged Lifers Facebook Group, saw that she taught Facebook Ads and I immediately picked up her Absolute Facebook Ads course. Not only is she a Facebook Ads expert who runs ads for her clients and teaches her students how to run successful ad campaigns for their clients, she also has a podcast called Get Paid, where she gets into the nitty gritty with some of your favorite online entrepreneurs to find out exactly what it takes to run their businesses online. What I’ve always loved about Claire is that she’s real, she’s honest, vulnerable and she tells it like it is - and I really gravitate toward people like that because I’ve made every mistake you can possibly make in trying to grow my business - especially when it comes to Facebook Ads - and what I find inspiring about Claire is that she’s made all the mistakes too, and she’s super successful because of it. And so as I’ve had more and more guests on this podcast to talk about their business journeys, what I’ve realized is that mistakes are a prerequisite for success. Not a single person that I’ve talked to, myself and Claire included, just nailed it right from the start. If you’re not out there trying things, underpricing yourself, and being nervous on consultation calls and launching products to crickets and screwing up your tech, you’re probably not learning, and you’re not growing. And we continue to make mistakes, and I think Claire already knows this, but what’s really changed for me is how I think about them. It’s what I make those mistakes and failures mean. So I’m really excited for you to hear my conversation with Claire about her business evolution and how you can get started using Facebook Ads in your business in a really effective way. Today we’re talking about: How a job loss pushed Claire to take her side hustle as a FB ads manager to a full time How Claire went to work for an agency and helped her get her confidence back after taking time off from her business Claire’s advice on pricing Why Claire is very clear on who her product is targeting When to start investing in Facebook ads Claire’s advice on the one Facebook ad strategy you can implement RIGHT NOW The importance of brand awareness Claire’s advice for what metrics to look at when you run Facebook ads Claire’s advice for someone who is just starting out My favorite quotes from Claire: “We want to help people but it’s not our job to help everyone” “Focus on the highest impact activities” “Just try to help as many people as you can with the problem you know how to solve really well” Bio: Claire Pelletreau is a Facebook ad and conversion optimization expert. She spends her days brainstorming ad strategies with her students, training a future generation of professional ad managers, and overseeing several thousands of dollars in client ad spend. She specializes in running ads that sell online courses, but will happily geek out with you on ways to scale every kind of business with paid traffic. Claire also LOVES talking about money - profit, loss, the whole shebang. She asks her guests how much they charge - and how much they earn - on her show, the Get Paid Podcast.

An interest in health and fitness may begin with a desire to look good on the outside, but most of us stick with sport because of the internal benefits—the sense of aliveness and vitality, the feeling of strength and connection to our bodies and the world around us. Training gives us a few hours away from our busy lives, and if we’re lucky, it allows us to be fully present. Now imagine turning those few hours of escape into a few days, a few weeks, or even a year! What would it be like to leave the modern world and spend time in the wild, developing a deep connection with yourself and the earth? Claire Dunn was living a typical fast-paced, urban lifestyle. Working as a lobbyist and environmental activist in a high-pressure, highly political environment, she longed for the opportunity to get closer to the wilderness she was fighting for and explore the human-nature connection. Starting in 2010, Claire spent a year in the wild, and that experience became the subject of her subsequent memoir, My Year Without Matches: Escaping the City in Search of the Wild. A trained Vision Quest guide, Claire offers rewilding workshops and retreats as well as personal mentoring for people seeking a greater sense of connection. She is a regular contributor to publications such as The Sydney Morning Herald, Huffington Post, and The Newcastle Herald. Today Claire shares the inspiration for her year in the wilderness, explaining her preparation and the structure of the experience. She walks us through a typical day in the bush, sharing the skills she practiced, what diet and exercise looked like, and her core practice of wandering. Claire discusses her struggle to readjust to the modern world and her commitment to helping others find connection to themselves, others and the earth. We’ve all heard of mentoring, but do we really understand what it is and how it can work powerfully in life and business? Claire Díaz-Ortiz is the co-author of “The One Minute Mentor” with Ken Blanchard and is In The Arena with Anthony on this episode to discuss the mentoring process, how to find a mentor, and how to benefit the most from a mentoring relationship. Claire is an author, speaker, and technology innovator who has been named one of the 100 Most Creative People in Business by Fast Company. Claire was an early employee at Twitter, where she was hired to lead corporate social innovation. This episode is packed with powerful insights and tips, so be sure you take the time to listen. Claire Diaz-Ortiz On The Mentoring Process And The Power Of Mentoring - Episode 87 Click To Tweet When should you seek out a mentor? Mentors are not the last resort option or even like a coach. A mentor is a skilled person who you admire in particular areas who agrees to come alongside you to help you grow in that specific area. Once you understand that concept you discover that it’s possible to have a number of mentors at the same time, each one contributing to your life in a specific area. So when should you seek out a mentor? Whenever you have an area of your life that you would like specific help with. On this episode of In The Arena, Claire Diaz-Ortiz shares insights from her new book, “The One Minute Mentor.” How can you find the best mentor for you? There are hurdles to finding good mentors, simply because those who are successful enough to serve you well as a mentor will also be the people who are already in high demand. Begin looking for a mentor by identifying your specific area of need and then observing who is in your circle who is strong in that area. Once you have a list of candidates, refine your own understanding of your need so you will be able to approach mentor candidates with clarity and precision when it comes to describing exactly what you’re looking for. Find out more tips for locating and connecting with a great mentor on this episode, with Claire Diaz-Ortiz. How can you find the best mentor for you?Click To Tweet Cross-generational mentoring is a powerful personal growth tool. Much of the wisdom you lack at any given time in life is due to the fact that you simply don’t have the experience you need - yet. But there are others in your field who have already fought those battles. They’ve already crossed those bridges - and typically, they are going to be of a different generation than you. On this episode of In The Arena, Anthony chats with Claire Diaz-Ortiz, co-author of the new book, “The One Minute Mentor.” Anthony and Claire spend a good deal of their conversation talking about the benefits of cross-generational mentoring, so make sure you don’t miss their chat. Honesty and vulnerability are vital to the mentoring process. No mentoring relationship will reach its full potential if either the mentor or the mentee is unwilling - for any reason - to be transparent. It’s the real life struggles and difficulties of life that highlight the areas where we most need to grow. They are also the places where the greatest lessons are learned. When a mentor and mentee allow their mentoring process to be enriched by their own honesty, amazing benefits come to both of them. Find out how to implement a very clear and powerful mentoring process with your mentor, on this episode of In The Arena.
