Filling The Deficit Of Mentoring In Your Life w/ Ken Blanchard & Claire Diaz-Ortiz

Mentors. Chances are slim you have someone who really fills the role. These days people will tend to cite their favorite authors and philosophers and influences as their mentors. And to that degree, I'd say that almost everyone in my life “mentors” me, as I learn from everyone. But I really define a mentor as someone who literally knows you and is invested in helping guide you. We used to have this in families where we lived in a village and closely amongst family and friends. We had grandparents, aunts and uncles and even neighbors who were truly involved in our lives. Today, we are isolated. A few years ago I sat down with Ken Blanchard, famous business and personal leader. Ken authored The One Minute Manager which is a business classic and has sold more than 15 million copies. But this conversation wasn't about management. It was about mentoring. Ken became the mentor for Claire Diaz-Ortiz, who is an author, speaker and innovation advisor who was an early employee at Twitter. She was named one of the 100 Most Creative People in Business by Fast Company and called “The Woman Who Got the Pope on Twitter.” Clair  is an award-winning author of eight books that have been published in more than a dozen countries. But the story here is Ken became a mentor to Claire, and together they co-authored a book titled, One Minute Mentoring: How to Find and Work With a Mentor - and Why You'll Benefit from Being One. Ken asked Claire to do this book with him because he not only personally mentors her, but she in turn mentors him in regards to the younger generation. It makes an incredibly valuable perspective on the need, value and opportunity of mentoring. I bring this back because at the age of 53, I found a true mentor in my life, and it has been transformational.  My core devotion is to finding deep fulfillment in life, and helping others find find it as well. When I'm not on this microphone I'm working with people as a life coach and often applying what fulfills them into their work and business. He's got a unique perspective on how to “make it” in the world of business – one that considers where we come from (and what resources we have available to us). If you're ready to make the most out of what you've already got, this one is for you. Can't-Miss Moments From This Episode:Fired by family: here's what happened when Matt's own father fired (ahem, “freed”) him from his lucrative yet passionless golf teaching job (and the takeaway you can apply to your own business) Truth bomb time: you CAN fit your business into your life (instead of the other way around). Matt and I discuss my own experience with the Grand Ole Opry and strategic use of Parkinson's Law, and show you how to take back your time… There's more to your biz than just getting by. If you find yourself feeling guilty for wanting and needing more, you're not alone. Matt will show you how to navigate insecurity in biz and why those "sucky" early stages of entrepreneurship are actually essential to your success.  Balance is overrated – I said what I said! Matt and I reveal why embracing the hustle is necessary for your biz… but why taking a break to grab a cold one is just as important. Work at what you love. Work at what you're passionate about. We hear this message a lot, yet few people are really doing it, and I'm submitting here that we tend to view it wrong. Let's drop the baggage you may think of around words like love and passion and just think on something you care about. Wouldn't you rather have a surgeon working on you who knows more than how to do the surgery, but really, inherently cares about helping people? If she/he does care, they will likely do a better job and help you and themselves far more. What do you care about that is a good fit for you and the marketplace. Then, how do you best make money with it? This is our focus today, to take an age old issue and breath new, paradigm shifting light into it. My guest is Matt McWilliams. Matt has been helping people make money about what they care about for a long time, including names you'll likely know such as Shark Tank's Kevin Harrington, Tony Robbins, Michael Hyatt, Claire Diaz-Ortiz, Lewis Howes, Brian Tracy and more. I've know Matt a long time and know first hand from scores of people how he's helped them hone in on something they care about, and then, his specialty, how to make money from it. Not simply so you can make money, but so you can…in order to keep doing what you care about. I want you doing what you care about. It makes you happy and fulfilled and from that you will give happiness and fulfillment to others! Matt is just now releasing his new book titled, “Turn Your Passions Into Profits” and it was my muse for this discussion. He really turns the tables on many of our misconceptions around this concept, so you'll hear some paradigm shifting info right off the bat. Some people look at affiliate marketing as some scammer trying to push any old product in order to get a commission. If you're not an affiliate marketer, you may have preconceived notions that affiliate marketing is in some way less than legitimate. Today, we are going to set the record straight. The Affiliate Guy, Matt McWilliams is here to talk about his affiliate marketing journey and how affiliate marketing can have a positive impact on the world.  We are specifically going to talk about partnering with other online entrepreneurs to reach a broader audience and get your product in front of those who actually need it. Matt breaks down how anyone can start an affiliate program for their product for free. We talk about some of the tools needed and how to remain ethical while actually doing good. According to Matt, the best partners are ones that help you create value, provide quality, and have a relevant audience. He's not willing to promote a product that he wouldn't be willing to sell to one of his closest friends. Matt has been doing affiliate marketing for over 16 years. In fact, it's how he saved one of his businesses. He has trained more than 300,000 affiliates. He has worked with Shutterfly and Adidas. He's also worked with entrepreneurs like Michael Hyatt, Stu McLaren, Lewis Howes, Brian Tracy, Ray Edwards, Claire Diaz-Ortiz, Shark Tank's Kevin Harrington, and Zig Ziglar. He's the host of The Affiliate Guy Podcast, and he's passionate about creating positive impact by helping great businesses thrive and build an audience.  And be sure to subscribe to The Self-Employed Life in Apple podcasts or follow us on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts so you don't miss an episode. Now that he's acknowledged that, it's made a huge difference in his leadership ability.  [04:43] He also lost 88 pounds and improved his health.  [07:35] Matt has been involved with affiliate marketing for the last 16 years. Affiliate marketing saved his business. [10:33] Matt shares how he realized the actual importance of his job helping businesses by teaching affiliate marketing. He realized he is making a difference.  [15:13] Matt lost 88 pounds with the help of his coach. He felt his weight was holding him back in his business. [19:46] Values, quality, relevance and being able to offer the product to a friend can help you decide if your values are in line with the affiliate program you're looking at. [22:55] When looking at potential affiliate programs always ask what is the best way to serve your audience. It's good to go through it or have someone on your team do so. [26:29] When you promote a program, don't send it to everyone on your list or your new subscribers.  [30:10] If you promote something, always give value. Share how it impacted you and why that is so valuable. Give your subscribers an option to opt out of your further affiliate marketing emails on this one program that you are promoting. [32:02] The best place to start finding affiliates is with your friends and people who have promoted similar products.  [34:35] The four sentence rule. Don't overwhelm your list. You can start an affiliate program for free. [36:02] You can use a tool like ConvertKit to set up a landing page URL that will tag affiliates that send traffic to that URL.  [38:39] Follow best practices, and then test everything else. A/B split testing will help you improve your conversions. [45:26] Matt has a new book called The Passion to Profit Path.  [46:02] The three types of entrepreneurs include the profitable who hate their work, the ones who love what they don't but don't make any money, and the ones who love what they do and make great money.  [48:39] The goal of Matt's business and book is to help entrepreneurs make money and love what they do.  [52:34] Affiliate marketing bridges the gap between having nothing to sell and being able to sell something. It also helps you learn about your audience. [54:27] We learn about Matt in the Rapid Round including his secret for getting things done.    Guest Contact –   Matt McWilliams Discover The Secret To Finding Top Affiliates In Your Industry Top Expert Reveals How to Make Money Online Without Spending Hours Creating Your Own Product Matt@MattMcWilliams.com The Affiliate Guy Podcast Matt McWilliams LinkedIn Matt McWilliams Facebook   Resources –   ConvertKit Ontraport Leadpages To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Moving Others   Contact Jeffrey – Website Coaching support My book, LINGO: Discover Your Ideal Customer's Secret Language and Make Your Business Irresistible is now available! Claire Diaz Ortiz says she chooses a word for the year because it "serves as a guidepost for what you want in the year to come." I began choosing a WOTY in 2016 and it's been an inspiration and often a conviction. Who I want to be and how I want to behave is not who I am now, and when I choose a word, I'm inspired to keep moving forward. As Crystal Hurst said, "We are both a masterpiece and a work-in-progress!" Isn't that the truth! A good word helps me focus on what God wants to work into my life. Listen today to get some ideas how how choosing our word can help us continue that "work-in-progress" all for God's glory. You can read the rest of Claire's article here. After you choose your word,  check out Marva’s encouraging post: 3 best steps after choosing your Word. Here is one of my favorites. Listen to find out why. Blessings on your new year. May it be filled with words of grace and love from the great Lover of your soul.

My guest today is Claire Diaz-Ortiz, digital strategist and author of the new book Social Media Success for Every Brand. Claire’s journey in social media expertise began as an early user of Twitter, and to put that in perspective, her Twitter handle is @claire. That’s it. No other words, numbers, or symbols. Just @claire.  After effectively using the platform to raise funds and promote awareness for her nonprofit organization, Twitter hired her to help others do the same and proactively make a positive change in the world. Claire took this experience and successfully pivoted into consulting with startups on their branding and marketing strategy. She would create detailed marketing plans, including a strategic social media presence, but she began to notice an unfortunate trend: many clients firmly believed that their best social media strategy was to have a post “go viral.” “I think there is this crazy mistaken idea that social media is really only good for, quote on quote, going viral. And that, thus, that is your only strategy when it comes to being on social media….[a]nd it was only after kind of this experience and me thinking through it in my head that I really realized that a clear solution needed to be found.” Her solution was to create the SHARE model, a social media strategy based on the principles of the StoryBrand marketing framework developed by Donald Miller. SHARE is an acronym for the components of the strategy, and you’ll want to have a pen and paper ready to take notes when Claire outlines it on the podcast today. A lot of listeners have reached out asking “how do I figure out my type?” And though I would love to give the answer, the truth is it can be very difficult to figure out one's Enneagram number. You are the only one who can truly determine your own Enneagram number because only you can identify the underlying motivation that drives the way you view the world. The real determining factor is not what you do, but rather why you do it. And, frankly, sometimes that can take a lot of internal work. In fact, I can't tell you how many people have told me they thought they were one number, but after really doing their work, figured out they had misidentified themselves. With so many variables it's easy to do.   So, I often tell people that the best way to learn the Enneagram or to figure out your number is through the narrative. Read about the Enneagram, attend an Enneagram conference, and listen to others share their stories. It's truly the best way to distinguish between the nuances of each type.   And this week on Typology, our guest Claire Diaz-Ortiz shares her story.  Listen as Claire tells us about her life as it relates to the Enneagram. For years she's been seeing her life through the lens of an Enneagram One. But, is she truly an Enneagram One? Stay tuned through the end of the show as we leave her with some food for thought.   Claire Diaz-Ortiz (@claire) is an author, speaker and Silicon Valley innovator who was an early employee at Twitter. We’ve all heard of mentoring, but do we really understand what it is and how it can work powerfully in life and business? Claire Díaz-Ortiz is the co-author of “The One Minute Mentor” with Ken Blanchard and is In The Arena with Anthony on this episode to discuss the mentoring process, how to find a mentor, and how to benefit the most from a mentoring relationship. Claire is an author, speaker, and technology innovator who has been named one of the 100 Most Creative People in Business by Fast Company. Claire was an early employee at Twitter, where she was hired to lead corporate social innovation. This episode is packed with powerful insights and tips, so be sure you take the time to listen. Claire Diaz-Ortiz On The Mentoring Process And The Power Of Mentoring - Episode 87 Click To Tweet When should you seek out a mentor? Mentors are not the last resort option or even like a coach. A mentor is a skilled person who you admire in particular areas who agrees to come alongside you to help you grow in that specific area. Once you understand that concept you discover that it’s possible to have a number of mentors at the same time, each one contributing to your life in a specific area. So when should you seek out a mentor? Whenever you have an area of your life that you would like specific help with. On this episode of In The Arena, Claire Diaz-Ortiz shares insights from her new book, “The One Minute Mentor.” How can you find the best mentor for you? There are hurdles to finding good mentors, simply because those who are successful enough to serve you well as a mentor will also be the people who are already in high demand. Begin looking for a mentor by identifying your specific area of need and then observing who is in your circle who is strong in that area. Once you have a list of candidates, refine your own understanding of your need so you will be able to approach mentor candidates with clarity and precision when it comes to describing exactly what you’re looking for. Find out more tips for locating and connecting with a great mentor on this episode, with Claire Diaz-Ortiz. How can you find the best mentor for you?Click To Tweet Cross-generational mentoring is a powerful personal growth tool. Much of the wisdom you lack at any given time in life is due to the fact that you simply don’t have the experience you need - yet. But there are others in your field who have already fought those battles. They’ve already crossed those bridges - and typically, they are going to be of a different generation than you. On this episode of In The Arena, Anthony chats with Claire Diaz-Ortiz, co-author of the new book, “The One Minute Mentor.” Anthony and Claire spend a good deal of their conversation talking about the benefits of cross-generational mentoring, so make sure you don’t miss their chat. Honesty and vulnerability are vital to the mentoring process. No mentoring relationship will reach its full potential if either the mentor or the mentee is unwilling - for any reason - to be transparent. It’s the real life struggles and difficulties of life that highlight the areas where we most need to grow. They are also the places where the greatest lessons are learned. When a mentor and mentee allow their mentoring process to be enriched by their own honesty, amazing benefits come to both of them. Find out how to implement a very clear and powerful mentoring process with your mentor, on this episode of In The Arena. We all want to climb mountains in our lives, but what if the life we were meant to experience is found in the small things? Claire Diaz-Ortiz -- the woman who got the Pope on Twitter -- author, speaker and Manager of Social Innovation at Twitter talks with Bonnie Gray about the journey to experience life rather than survive it. If you're tired of living life on the hamster wheel, this podcast is for you: *Why we sometimes don't need to climb a mountain -- and why creating space to hear God best allows him change us instead. * Why things on your To-Do List won't lead to a better life, but the small things will. * Why anxiety keeps us up at night, our childhood patterns of dealing with stress -- how we can practice better self care. * The importance of play for us as adults & how to create space for it. * The power of 3 Good Things and how they help you nurture a good day. * Drawing boundaries on technology and social media to enjoy the moments that really matter. The end of the year is a great time to take stock of where our time and energies have gone -- and reflect on what really matters. This podcast is a wonderful prompt to have that soulful conversation with your yourself, your friends and with God. This is one to pass onto your friends. Enjoy!
