One of the key aspects of wildness is adaptation. Being able to change and adapt to different needs, in different environments, is a cornerstone of resilience. While a large part of this involves getting to know the land where you dwell, it helps to know multiple landscapes. It can teach you how to think on your toes and figure out how to do things in new ways. While rewilding leans more toward longer term ancestral living within a culture, and survival is more about meeting immediate needs in a context removed from culture, survival skills are a necessary base that culture builds on top of. In this way, people into rewilding should consider practicing survival skills in multiple environments, as a way of building the foundations of resilience. To talk with me about this today, is Tom McElroy from Wild Survival Skills. Tom McElroy has taught Survival and Primitive Skills to more than 15,000 students worldwide over the past 23 years.  During his twenties Tom spent an entire year living 'off the land'.  He built and lived in a shelter made from forest material, rubbed sticks together to make fire, purified water naturally and hunted, fished and gathered his own food.  Tom has taught at various schools around the world, including Tom Brown Jr.'s Tracker School. He holds a bachelor's degree in Anthropology and Geography from Rutgers University and a Master's in International Policy related to Indigenous Peoples from the University of Connecticut and has studied with indigenous people all over the world. Notes:InstagramYouTubeWild Skills SurvivalDesert Island SurvivalSupport the show

"The vision is the journey, and the journey is now.” -Tom Brown Jr.In today's episode, we take a look at the power of renewal routines as a tool for deepening connection with ourselves. Jon shares a process he learned from Tom Brown Jr, which he has named Renewal of Creative Path, and the benefits that process has had on his life since he was a teenager. Sarah and Aidan share their own experiences and reflections on renewal routines, and what they have gained from integrating these routines into their lives on yearly, monthly, or even daily basis.Renewal of Creative Path can be a very in-depth process that takes multiple weeks and many hours of reflection and conversation to complete. However, it can also be a shorter process. The following is a very quick look at the steps in the process, which Jon shares in greater detail during the podcast.1. What connects us in our lives to nature, ourselves, and other people?2. What are the obstacles to connection in our lives?3. Tracking patterns of synchronicity and help from nature4. Inventory of gifts, passions, and talents5. Backtracking the stepping stones of visions and gifts6. Release expectations and offering forgivenessPause, gather from steps 1-6, and reflect. It was through Tom Brown Jr and his Tracker School that I came to meet John.  It was 1984, on a farm in western New Jersey, and he was an instructor at the school, and spending seven days with him and the rest of the staff and Tom changed the direction of my life in a radical way. John was pulled to New Mexico in 1986, where he founded The Tracking Project, and began running rites of passage camps for boys and girls, as well as adult trainings and retreats. I was incredibly fortunate to spend time in his Nurturing the Roots Mentoring Program, where he had gathered elders from Australia, Sweden, Hawaii, Mexico, Brazil, and across North America.   Learning and connecting with those elders and John and his staff was a revelation that blew my mind, because they held a mentoring space that was unlike anything I had experienced before.    This experience changed the way I tracked animals, connected to nature, taught and led my camps, trainings and programs. It even affected my personal and community relationships   In this first of a series of conversations, we dive into what learning tracking does to us and for us as human beings, and John describes his apprenticeship with some of the best trackers in the world.    Please enjoy Episode #133. I don't think it's a stretch to say that Tom Brown Jr leaves quite a 'wake' in his passing.  He's taught thousands of students, both through his books and Tracker School, and he's been a 'force of nature' in these past five decades.   He's been a mentor, a guide, a father figure to many whose fathers were absent, and he won't ever fully know the depth of his presence or impact had on those who leaned in to his teaching.    He was complicated, and a little wild.  Untamed, I guess I'd call it.  Kinda like the ocean, where you never turn your back on him if you could help it!  Not dangerous, but man, that piercing gaze that was like X-ray vision, peering into your soul.    It didn't happen often, but when he'd mention something he'd seen in my tracks, about my life or work, it would always be spot on.  Every time.    I took a lot of classes back in the 80's and 90's, and was an assistant instructor on many classes too, and he always had something new to teach, that I had never heard or seen before, so I knew he was just scratching the surface of his skills and abilities, even in the 'advanced classes'.    He didn't tolerate mind games, or time wasters or fools, and I learned a lot about boundaries, and inner strength and conviction from observing his teaching style over the years.   On the flip side, he was funny.  REALLY FUNNY, and he had that type of humor that was 'old school' but also not aimed at putting someone down in a mean, or harsh way.   When there were students who were more serious or sensitive, his gentle side would come out as well.  It was always a joy to see. This episode is about the impact he had on my life.   I trust he's tracking in the canyons of the Other Side, following Grandfather or one of his older instructors through the sage.  Journey well and good medicine to you, my friend. “This idea of the natural mind IS human nature, or maybe it's nature in human, nature as human.”

“Our nervous system is born expecting that kind of welcome, that kind of attending, that kind of intending. I think our nervous system is shaped for that.”What is the connecting legacy of mentoring the natural mind? Today, Jon takes on a journey to answer that very question, explore how to mentor in this fashion, the benefits we get from being mentored (and mentoring others) this way, and the future of mentoring the natural mind. Jon shares how he was primed for mentoring by his elders as a young child, how Tom Brown Jr. mentored him, and how he observed this same mentoring in the San people in Africa. He shares what makes mentoring different from teaching and what, specifically, makes nature a mentor like no other. Enjoy!“I would call them nutrients of our consciousness. Each of these different species, and individuals among the species, that we build relationships with- the more of that we get from nature, the more our mind becomes nature, and our heart becomes nature, and there's a longing to inhabit this planet in a deeper and different way, where we feel like we belong. And when we feel that, then we really care, and then we really want to help make it better.”Looking for More? Sarah shares how the 8 Shields Design Principles can be seen as a map to our our original design of interconnectedness, and as Jon Young often says, to our ‘ancient nervous system'.First through the lens of the senses, Sarah explains how we process information from our environment, and presences the drastic shift in what our senses experience in modern times versus the purity of Nature that we evolved with over millions of years. The effects on our well being become apparent when we consider our neurobiological responses to external stimuli, and our need for physiological homeostasis to live with health and happiness.Secondly, Sarah shares about humans as innately social beings, and how our evolutionary success is in large part to cooperation and coordination with other humans for safety, food security, and division of labor. Our nervous systems are wired for safe social engagement for survival, and what we experience in modern family and social systems is in dire contrast to what our nervous system is reaching for.Using the 8 Shields as a map, we can take inventory of our sensory and relational experience to see where we are on the journey back to our original design.About Sarah FontaineSarah is a Energy work Practitioner, Wildlife Tracker, and Interspecies Communicator. For over 25 years, Sarah has been practicing various healing modalities including Chakra-work, Craniosacral Therapy, Traditional Chinese Medicine Meridians and Five Elements, Emotional Clearing, Interpersonal Neurobiology, Somatic Trauma Therapy, and Polyvagal Theory. She has studied wildlife tracking through Shikari Tracker Mentoring with Jon Young and Josh Lane, Tom Brown Jr's Tracker School, and Cybertracker Conservation. Today on the show, Dave and I first talk about the safety and ethical considerations around observing wild animals. We then discuss the best places to spot wildlife (and how it could be in your own backyard), whether there's a best time of day to encounter animals, and the approach to take so that the animals don't know you're there, or if they do, feel comfortable with your presence. Some people dread winter with its cold weather, long dark nights, and the downcast mood these elements often induce. But my guest would say it's possible to befriend winter, and truly enjoy the rhythms and opportunities that are unique to this season.Micah Mortali is the founder of the Kripalu School of Mindful Outdoor Leadership and an instructor and retreat leader who uses the teaching of ancestral skills to help people develop greater mindfulness and connection with nature. Today on the show, Micah explains why we should consider winter "the night of the year" and how befriending the season involves aligning yourself with its call toward rest and reflection. We first discuss exploring the outdoor world during winter and how learning survival skills like shelter building and animal tracking can help you spend more time in nature, restore your sense of well-being, and simply feel more alive. In the second half of our conversation, we talk about how to improve your interior life during winter, both in the literal sense of making your house more cozy and in the metaphorical sense of turning inward. Micah explains why you should spend one night a week pretending you live off the grid, embrace the power of firelight, and may want to wait until March to make your New Year's resolutions. We end our conversation with why you might want to read The Road this winter.Resources Related to the EpisodeMicah's previous appearance on the AoM podcast: Episode #739: Rewild Your LifeRewilding: Meditations, Practices, and Skills for Awakening in Nature by Micah MortaliAoM Podcast #157: Primitive Pursuits & Winter SurvivalAoM Article: How to Make Pine Needle TeaAoM Article: How to Track Animals — A Primer on Identifying FootprintsTracking and the Art of Seeing by Paul RezendesTom Brown's Science and Art of Tracking by Tom Brown Jr.AoM Podcast #566: How to Have a Hyggely Christmas and a More Memorable New YearAoM Article: 8 Things That Can Help You Get More Hygge This Winter"The Forgotten Medieval Habit of 'Two Sleeps'""Can't Get to Sleep? GUEST BIO Tom Brown III is the founder of FutureNature and T3Photography. He is a lifelong practitioner and living guide of ancestral skills, a frequent contributor, and a consultant to the Anchored Outdoors network. As a lifelong practitioner of ancestral skills under his father Tom Brown Jr. - prolific author and Founder of Tracker Wilderness Survival School.  Tom has devoted his life to passing on his knowledge of these skills. He works diligently as an educator, a steward of the land, to help return the connection to the natural world and awareness back to our wild selves. He joins us from his homestead in Oregon by Mount Hood - his home base for sharing his knowledge and experience through teaching, writing, and photography. He hopes to, in his words, "help people see Nature through his eyes, leading them to understand that spectacular natural beauty can be found anywhere, no matter where you may be." I believe that our ability to be resilient is not gone; it's simply re-awakening what we already have innately in us through the examples of how our ancestors lived and what people like Tom bring to light. To recognize our abundance, that we do have it all, and that there is always much to learn about our home here on earth and how to undo our distractions, even if only a little bit, to become better stewards of the land. It was an honor to sit with Tom III and listen intently as he shared his passion for learning and sharing some of the knowledge passed on to him by his father, Tom Brown Jr., and his grandfather, Stalking Wolf, who taught his father. And it was also great to hear some perspective from someone who, through his lifetime devotion to a life outdoors and educating others to find their own way in life, figures out ways of balancing both modern and primitive aspects of our human experience. — We humans create beauty through love, gratitude, appreciation, wonder, poetry, dancing, stillness, music… Yet it may be that in order to be able unhesitatingly to give that “Yes!” answer, we need to step outside of our human selves. Did not the sun, the wind, and the water come joyously together to produce sparkling wavelets today, as they have for uncountable years? Are not flowers continuing to open their leaves and blossoms, birds to sing, and the moon and stars to light the sky? Are not the crows and ravens still playing and tumbling above us? The world around creates a depth and breadth of beauty that is awe-inspiring in every moment, if we will only pay attention.   All of life conspires to create beauty. It is our privilege, even our divine responsibility as humans, to perceive and appreciate that beauty. One of the ways that we do this is to acknowledge that this is indeed the most beautiful day of all time.   Acknowledgment brings us to place of gratitude. When we express that gratitude, we create more beauty. So as you proceed through your day and offer your gratitude for the tiny or grand examples of beauty that you see, know that you are contributing to this most beautiful day that ever was.     Valeria Teles interviews Wes Gietz — the author of “ BORN WHOLE: Heal Your Pre-Birth Trauma. Guide And Protect Your Baby From Conception To Birth.”   After four decades of wondering why humans were so strange, Wes Gietz got his formal start on the path of natural shamanism some thirty years ago, studying ancient survival skills, spirituality, and shamanism with Tom Brown Jr. During that period, he also worked with an Anicinabe medicine man who trained and authorized Wes to conduct traditional sweatlodge ceremonies. Wes Gietz offered sweats and guided Vision Quests for more than twenty years. The scope of his journey has included many aspects of human existence, from working with the spirits in rocks and water to gardening and Earth-based shamanism, being in the Realm of Souls and learning from the entities of that domain, and expansion to experiences of near-infinite consciousness.   Wes' currently work as a writer and personal/spiritual mentor and guide. He guides Past Life Regressions and Life Between Lives meditations. Wes has practiced and taught Emotional Freedom Techniques for 25 years. He teaches the physical and spiritual skills of the shamanic path. Wes is a wanderer and sometimes a channel. He has published numerous articles on topics such as spirituality, healing, edible and medicinal plants, tracking, and Coyote Mentoring, and he is also a contributing author of Peak States of Consciousness, Volume 2: Acquiring Extraordinary Spiritual and Shamanic States (Grant McFetridge with Wes Gietz). Three years ago, Wes published his first book, Born Whole, the personal story of healing his pre-birth emotional traumas through meditative regression to the womb. These days Wes published a blog and newsletter of stories, observations, and occasional poetry. Book #2 is in the works; with the tentative title My Name is Dancing Fire. It is the story of his ongoing journey into awareness. In 1999 Wes initiated the Firemaker Gathering, an annual week-long learning and celebration of ancient skills and community held on Vancouver Island. He is acknowledged as a storyteller and elder, and as a man who embodies the qualities of patience, wisdom, compassion, and understanding.       Meet Wes at windwalker.ca and firemaker.org

Hey! Welcome to Move Wild Podcast, a podcast dedicated to understanding human health from an evolutionary perspective, and integrating the universal principles of human health and wildness into our lives. Each week I interview and discuss with guests on topics and conversations entered around re-wilding, natural movement, nature connection and ancestral living practices. Thanks for joining me on this journey! About today’s show: Today I have the pleasure of sharing a conversation I recorded with Tom Brown III of Trackers Earth. Tom, also known as “T3,” has been a life long student and practitioner of primitive living skills, wilderness survival and nature connection. Born in New Jersey in 1978, he grew up learning the skills our ancestors used to live close to the Earth from his father, Tom Brown Jr, founder of the Tracker Wilderness Survival School. Growing up at the Tracker School showed him the profound effect reconnecting people to nature can have not only on the individual but on the planet as a whole. After spending a few years wandering across America, he has spent the last 20 years teaching the skills he learned as a child. Currently Tom lives in Oregon and works with Trackers Earth as the director of adult programming. He is also the foraging/homesteading coordinator for Anchored Outdoors, which is a new website dedicated to hunting, fishing, foraging, and homesteading. When not teaching or writing, Tom is an avid fly-fisherman, traditional archer and nature photographer. If you've been around here for a while, I am sure you've heard me talk about the month I spent with Boulder Outdoor Survival School (BOSS). Today I brought on Matt Furches, Matt is one of the instructors for BOSS and a good friend of mine. We talked about how he got into his work at BOSS and how their training helps transform attendee's lives for the better. We get into the idea of not having everything available to you at your fingertips, outcomes he's seen from the BOSS training and some of his favorite memories and outcomes he's seen come out of the survival courses. About Matt Furches: Matt Furches hails from Nottingham, Pennsylvania, where he was greatly inspired by the woods and the creeks, and by the Amish culture that coexisted side-by-side with 1980s American culture. After discovering the writings of Tom Brown Jr., George Washington Sears, and Henry David Thoreau, he became a self-taught naturalist and practitioner of bushcraft and indigenous survival skills. In 2008 he spent an entire summer in the American West studying with some of the most skilled instructors in the field of primitive technology, survival, and natural history, his journey culminated in a 28-day field course with the world-renowned Boulder Outdoor Survival School (BOSS), which since the late 1960s have been at the forefront of survival training and adventure travel. Thanks for joining me on this journey! About today’s show: Today I have the pleasure of sharing a conversation I recorded with Lee Trew. Lee taught bushcraft and 'coyote mentoring' on youth camps, before training as a psychotherapist and counsellor. Lee has been using Jon Young's coyote mentoring approach for over a decade, and began learning and teaching bushcraft as a teenager at the Forest School Camps in the UK. He studied indigenous survival skills at Tom Brown Jr's Tracker School, and Practical Primitive, both in the US, and spent a year living in the bush, finding shelter, water and food on the landscape; putting it into practice. More than that, he found a radically new experience of what it means to be human. Now he brings psychology and bushcraft together for rewilding; helping people of all ages to reawaken their wildness and deepen their connection with the natural world. He was also: - A speaker on rewilding at the Ultimate Health Event in Sydney - Featured in ABC's Life at 9 documentary - An instructor for Claire Dunn during the period she wrote about in her book, My Year Without Matches - The bushcraft and trapping consultant for Australian film, The Hunter.Links: Links to connect with Lee: Bluegum Bushcraft - https://www.bluegumbushcraft.com.au Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wildhearttribe/?ref=page_internal Follow me and get in touch with me on Instagram, @move_wild, to stay up to date and stay inspired to keep connecting to your true nature! I see a lot of people, especially young people, thinking that they and humanity as a collective hole are actually cancer of the earth. Meaning that we are destroyers of nature and that we can’t help to be this way. Through social media, news and well renowned science, there is very much evidence to prove that this is right. But there’s also news, things, people making things happen in the world that prove this to be wrong. My agenda today is to alleviate you all. The problems I see is that this information is not widely spread. How do I know this? More importantly, how do I know this is a reality? Let’s get up and in it.  I think first though we must endeavor to understand what is holding this information back. I like to think of this as systems or a system or even better a system of self. In my opinion, my sociological observations, i’ve noticed that human beings adhere much better to catastrophe and pain rather than remedies and answers of positive vibrations. I think in systems thinking one might want to consider the psychology. In order to make the world a better place and to make things happen, I think it starts with us as individuals. Our mind frames. Or mentalities. My question would be, would you be ready to think outside of the box? Would you be willing to unlearn most of what you’ve learned. Would you be willing to sacrifice conveniences? Because it is these conveniences that seem to be the inconvenience. Striping us of the forgotten love of nature and even ourselves.    Tom Brown Jr. https://youtu.be/diHlYbyhA-g   Zepp Holzer https://permies.com/t/32725/Sepp-Spring-Terrace   Greening the desert https://permaculturenews.org/2018/09/26/celebrating-10-years-at-the-greening-the-desert-project-jordan/     Willy Smits https://youtu.be/dXWikNXiG2Q   Mark shepard  https://newforestfarm.us/     Brazil graham Hancock  https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/07/180723142845.htm

The Green Building Matters Podcast with Charlie Cichetti

Michael Cichetti, Director of Marketing and Sales at Green Building Education Services (GBES), joins Charlie Cichetti in this episode. Residing in Atlanta, with an entrepreneurial spirit, he is passionate about sustainability in the green building industry. Michael and Charlie are brothers and share the same passion for focusing on the green building movement and environmental sustainability.   Michael Cichetti - Early Inspiration Growing up in Blue Ridge, Georgia, Michael fell in love with the outdoors.  Most importantly he enjoys the natural wonders of the mountains and the area he grew up in.  As a result, he went to college at Georgia State University, receiving his business management degree in 2010 and currently lives in Atlanta.    Early on, Michael had one professor that really stood out in an entrepreneurship class.  This professor is an angel investor. Hence, he was able to introduce experts to the class to give real world hands-on expert advice.  Therefore, Michael was intrigued and was able to apply this experience to his current work. Right out of school Michael was hired on at a real estate law firm as a Title Curative Specialist.  He then transitioned to SIG and GBES and focuses on helping commercial real estate professionals be more sustainable which he is very passionate about.   “Being able to work toward a good cause like sustainability really makes me feel like I am spending my time in a valuable way.” - Michael Cichetti   Big Learning Curve Michael initially lead the sales department with Sustainable Investment Group (SIG) and now Green Building Education Services.  Michael works on the company's marketing and strives to boost sales to help scale the company. In the early years of these companies, most of the business SIG earned was through word of mouth for doing great work. So, a sales department was new to the company, and Michael, had to figure out what worked best by trying a lot of different things. Therefore, it was very challenging and big learning curve, but he appreciated the opportunity to learn so much so quickly. “I had to throw everything against the wall and see what stuck.”  - Michael Cichetti As a result, Michael brought in new business to SIG.  Furthermore, Michael has an entrepreneurial mindset and is very successful. Most noteworthy, his vast background allows him to share his knowledge which is beneficial to clients' careers.     Survival and Sustainability When Michael was young, his interest in a survival course given by Tom Brown Jr.  certainly made an impact. Michael explains that Tom Brown Jr. was raised by native americans and they taught him about sustainability and how to rely on the land.  This intrigued Michael and consequently he continued to read and explore in this arena. “Taking things from nature, choosing the trees that will actually help the other surrounding plants and animals flourish more.” - Michael Cichetti Michael was very fortunate to have the exposure to the outdoors.  Because of this exposure, he loves the sustainability story of the native american ways.  Michael is a highly encouraging person. He believes the green building movement and sustainability are here to stay.  Above all, today there is more of a need for us to be sustainable in every industry. An interest in health and fitness may begin with a desire to look good on the outside, but most of us stick with sport because of the internal benefits—the sense of aliveness and vitality, the feeling of strength and connection to our bodies and the world around us. Training gives us a few hours away from our busy lives, and if we’re lucky, it allows us to be fully present. Now imagine turning those few hours of escape into a few days, a few weeks, or even a year! What would it be like to leave the modern world and spend time in the wild, developing a deep connection with yourself and the earth? Claire Dunn was living a typical fast-paced, urban lifestyle. Working as a lobbyist and environmental activist in a high-pressure, highly political environment, she longed for the opportunity to get closer to the wilderness she was fighting for and explore the human-nature connection. Starting in 2010, Claire spent a year in the wild, and that experience became the subject of her subsequent memoir, My Year Without Matches: Escaping the City in Search of the Wild. A trained Vision Quest guide, Claire offers rewilding workshops and retreats as well as personal mentoring for people seeking a greater sense of connection. She is a regular contributor to publications such as The Sydney Morning Herald, Huffington Post, and The Newcastle Herald. Today Claire shares the inspiration for her year in the wilderness, explaining her preparation and the structure of the experience. She walks us through a typical day in the bush, sharing the skills she practiced, what diet and exercise looked like, and her core practice of wandering. Today’s episode sounds like it was lifted off the pages of a Hollywood screenplay: two renown survivalists find themselves in an all-too-real survival experience, after a natural disaster decimates their tropical island home. Yet that has been the past five months of reality for my guests Carmen and Matt Corradino, husband-and-wife survival skills instructors who live on St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where they have been dealing with the devastating aftermath of hurricanes Irma and Maria. The category 5 storms, mere weeks apart in a slew of powerful storms churned up in the Atlantic this past fall, were two of the most intense hurricanes in recorded history. Though there may have been no one better prepared for such a “force of nature,” as Matt referred to the storms. Together, he and Carmen have nearly three decades of survival skills experience, including a five-year stint living in a primitive shelter while teaching at survivalist Tom Brown Jr.’s Tracker School in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. And for the past decade, the two have carved out a subsistence lifestyle in the tropical forests of St. Croix (now with their 3-year-old daughter Ilee), where they own Mt. Victory Camp eco lodge and teach primitive and survival skills by way of their school, Caribbean Earth Skills. Hear from Carmen and Matt as they not only share survival lessons learned from the hurricanes, but the paths that led them to their way of life, and the contentment they've found in an existence deeply immersed in the natural world—even in the face of natural disaster.

Over a decade ago, Jeannine Tidwell and her husband moved to Sandpoint, Idaho on a path to fulfill a goal she formed as a young adult. They founded Twin Eagles Wilderness School, a place where students can connect with nature and their community while learning wilderness skills and becoming mentors for others. Jason and Jeannine met one rainy afternoon and discussed the history of the school, the philosophy behind its core tenets, and mankind’s relationship with the natural world. Karen Sherwood is a Northwest native who grew up studying the flora of the Pacific Northwest. While studying at the University of Washington, she was hired by Tom Brown Jr. to develop and expand the wild foods curriculum for the Tracker School. Karen gained a strong understanding of traditional uses of wild plants while teaching there. Since returning home to the Northwest, she continues to teach ethnobotany programs through Earthwalk Northwest and other organizations such as the Department of Ecology, Washington Outdoor Women, King County Parks and Wilderness Awareness School. In addition to her botany background, Karen also spent many years in search and rescue, fine tuning her wilderness survival skills. To balance her expertise, she also teaches utilitarian uses of plants, including cordage and natural plant dyes. Her professionalism and credibility are enhanced by a special gift for helping students become confident and comfortable with harvesting and using plants. Her current passion is teaching about the vast and wondrous uses of seaweeds, as well as traditional Northwest basketry. Karen Sherwood and her husband Frank run EarthWalk Northwest at http://earthwalknorthwest.com In this interview, Karen discusses all sorts of useful wild foods information, from foraging, harvesting, and recipes. Especially interesting is a segment on fermentation, views on wildcrafting, and recipes with burdock, yellow dock and much more.
