As a first-generation American Muslim businesswoman, Tasneem Dohadwala has lived a life of being a threefold minority: in race, gender, and career. She experienced a traditional South Asian Muslim upbringing, short one pivotal detail—her mom worked, and loved it. Tasneem speaks to being a woman in the world of investments on this episode of AMP. Currently Founding Partner at global investment firm Excelestar Ventures and a Managing Director at early-stage investment firm Golden Seeds, which focuses on women-led businesses, Tasneem has come a long way. Her ambition likely stems from her mother instilling a sense of pride (rather than guilt) in work and her family's belief that there is no glass ceiling. She credits her success to their support, especially throughout business school when she was one of only nine mothers out of 1800 students. Tasneem defines what any investor does in layman's terms and outlines the less-defined roles of a good one—guiding, understanding, and being a sounding board for your CEO. We ask her to enlighten us on how investment differs from the picture painted on Shark Tank. She likens her entrepreneurship approach to reading a thriller, learning new players and plot points with every page. She shares anecdotes from her early career: about the support of bosses on the trading floor for both her work and family; about a male VP's unseemly comment regarding women that stuck with her and how, as her kids say, that's clearly a him problem, not a me problem; about how even she had to come to the realization that ignoring color is dismissive of people's varied experiences, which can make society and companies richer. Not until business school did she start to own her differences rather than suppressing them. We chat about how the world has changed (or has it?). Asad cites some depressing investment stats from 2020; Tasneem adds her own. Nonetheless, it's becoming more universally accepted that racially- and gender-diverse teams produce a better return on equity, among other benefits. This past year CEOs have started demanding that their companies and cap tables be inclusive, but still need to make it a mandate. Values and actions may finally be catching up with each other, but there is far less access to resources for women, despite the capital existing. And if the framework doesn't change, and firms are only willing to invest in serial entrepreneurs, then the pattern of investing in men doesn't change. Women have been showing up, and we're hopeful this is finally the decade when their constraint is no longer perpetuated. American Muslim Project is a production of Rifelion, LLC. CEO Alan McLenaghan shares not only his philosophy on women in business but also how his life experiences delivered him to this place. You will hear how he sought out one of his executives, knowing that she could help take the company to the next level (You got to hear her side of the story in the previous episode). The foundation of the culture starts with the values the company is striving toward. He responds to the question, “How do you support your women,” and spends some time on women’s self-beliefs and what actions he takes to support them. Alan even shares how he interfaces with his leadership team and the focus he takes in his one-on-one meetings. This is a delightfully refreshing interview, packed with the fundamentals that are embedded in the SageGlass culture.

“If you are uncomfortable with money, this relationship with money is going to affect your business.” This week in Part Two of Money, Women, and Business, Sonya and Laura discuss some more practical aspects on the topic of money and business. Many women shy away from the numbers and metrics in their business. However, success in our business is dependent on our ability to see and understand our numbers as a roadmap. We can use money and numbers to give us a picture of where we are, our potential and the capacity we have to create impact and freedom. A lot of women don’t like to have much attention on money because of negative associations with greed. They are in business to help others, not “make money”, but this attitude hurts their business. What we put attention on matters in our business. “When I have no attention on my metrics and numbers my business slumps. When I place attention on my metrics and numbers my business grows. Our attention sustains reality.” An important aspect of money in business is assessing our personal goals and values around money. Many times, our goals around money aren’t sustainable and actually aren’t tied to reality or our personal values. It is possible for women to create a successful business without sacrificing personal alignment and balance. Your goals and values will be unique to your particular set of circumstances. It is important to find success in your business while staying aligned with those values. “Most women I know aren’t motivated by money… What I’m motivated by is my impact. We have to tie our impact into our money goal.” As we develop a more neutral mindset around money, we can look realistically at some of the metrics and numbers in our business. It is important to find safe environments to discuss money and individuals who won’t respond with their own triggers. Whether it is a coach, a therapist, a women’s group, or even the Women in the Business Arena Facebook group, aligning yourself with other women who are becoming more comfortable speaking about money will help you develop a healthier mindset, and achieve your goals. “We have given money so much power over our sense of worth. We have to change that.” Some Topics we talk about in this episode: Introduction - 0:56 Getting Comfortable with Money - 3:25 Assessing Your Values Around Money - 11:12 Creating Goals Around Money - 19:12 How Do We Tie Our Values into Our Money Goals? - 28:12 Finding a Safe Place to Discuss Money - 34:57 What are Some of the Important Numbers in Our Businesses? - 40:36 Looking at Debt and Our Business - 46:12 Wrap-up and Takeaways - 46:43 How to get involved Join the Women in the Business Arena Group on Facebook and continue the discussion starting next week! https://www.facebook.com/groups/womeninthebusinessarena Reach out to us - we’d love to hear more about where you’re at in life and business! “Money is neutral, but how we view it determines its power.” This week on Women in the Business Arena, Sonya and Laura discuss the topic of money, women and business. They had so much to talk about, this is part one of a two-part series. As women, we often struggle to talk about money. Too many women avoid looking at, working with it and getting intimate with their money matters. This really affects our ability to have a thriving business. Too many times, money holds an inordinate amount of power over us. This is because of how we view it. When we look at money neutrally, as a source of energy and a means of exchange, we can begin to relate to it in a more empowered manner. “As women, we have been conditioned to provide so much free labor, both emotionally and physically. We have been conditioned to give it with no expectation to receive it equally or even more abundantly.” Our perception of money often begins at a very young age. We model the money mindsets of parents and other influential individuals from our childhood. This can give confidence to attain wealth easily, or instill fear that drives a scarcity mentality. This mindset pattern is typically deeply ingrained, and can be difficult to shift. Without addressing those patterns directly, we will continue to be affected by them throughout our lives, even if it is at a subconscious level. As women, we are typically accustomed to giving, without monetary gain. We give because we are “good moms” or “good friends” and see it as our role in our family or community. As we work to grow our businesses, we can end up sabotaging ourselves because of our mindset around money. The solution to this challenge is to reconcile our way of “being” with money. “When we can feel money, when we can understand it, when we have a good relationship with it, then we can have good money goals and a realistic connection to what we can create.” Too much of our aversion to money comes from comparing our own business to others’. The truth is, we rarely have the full context to measure the success of someone else’s business. A million dollar business could be paying out nearly all they are bringing in. As we redirect our focus, and reform our relationship with money, we can find healthy connection, and a new standard of measuring success. If we can learn to see money as an energy source, and be connected to it in a healthy way, we will become more realistic in our goals, and carry authority. It’s time to shake off others’ definitions of money and success, and discover your own. The metrics of our business carry value. They offer us a roadmap to guide us in making good decisions for our business. “Every single person has a different set of circumstances… Every time we try to chase after someone else’s goals we’re letting ourselves down.” Some Topics we talk about in this episode: Introduction - 0:54 Definitions Around Money - 3:46 Shifting Relationship with Money - 8:30 Marking Success in Business - 17:50 Our Personal Relationship with Money - 26:36 The Need to Navigate Money with Partners/Relationships - 33:56 Where to Begin - 41:00 Wrap-up and Takeaways - 44:38 How to get involved Join the Women in the Business Arena Group on Facebook and continue the discussion starting next week! https://www.facebook.com/groups/womeninthebusinessarena Reach out to us - we’d love to hear more about where you’re at in life and business!
