Empowered Relationship Podcast: Your Relationship Resource And Guide
Are you caught in the race to do more, be more, and achieve more—only to find yourself feeling stuck, disconnected, and unfulfilled? In an age where "hustle culture" pushes us to optimize every moment, a quiet crisis is unfolding: our relentless drive for productivity may actually be undermining our emotional wellness and closest relationships. In this episode, listeners are invited to take a closer look at how toxic productivity seeps into our personal lives, from romantic partnerships to friendships, and even the way we relate to ourselves. The conversation dissects the difference between healthy ambition and achievement born from unresolved emotions, explores why "performing" and "optimizing" can stifle genuine connection, and offers actionable steps to shift towards presence, self-compassion, and authenticity. Through relatable stories and research-backed insights, this episode helps listeners recognize these patterns and learn how to reclaim time, creativity, and real intimacy in their lives. Israa Nasir is a psychotherapist and founder of Well.Guide, who has cultivated a dedicated following of over 350,000 across social media for her evidence-based take on mental health and productivity. Israa's debut book, Toxic Productivity: Reclaim Your Time and Emotional Energy in a World That Always Demands More, dives deep into the roots of hustle culture and dismantles the myth that our worth is tied to how much we accomplish. Drawing on therapeutic insights, client stories, and her own experience, Israa helps readers unlearn toxic patterns and adopt a more emotionally sustainable path forward. Episode Highlights 04:07 Defining toxic productivity. 09:23 A personal journey from achievement chasing to emotional awareness. 13:11 How early experiences shape productivity patterns. 16:50 How optimization culture impacts relationships. 22:56 Restoring connection: Returning to presence and somatic awareness. 27:09 Measuring fulfillment: Moving beyond external checklists. 29:45 Barriers to genuine connection. 31:24 How busyness and parenting impact relationships. 34:34 How reevaluating commitments leads to more intentional choices. 37:57 Rediscovering play and creativity fosters connection. Your Checklist of Actions to Take Conduct a Time and Energy Audit: List out all your commitments from the past three weeks and reflect on which ones made you feel energized versus drained, then evaluate their necessity. Question Unexamined Obligations: Regularly ask yourself if certain routines, events, or roles (like always hosting or planning) are still serving you or are just a habit. Remove One Calendar Item Weekly: Apply the "Chanel rule" by intentionally taking one thing off your weekly schedule to create space for presence and restoration. Reconnect with Body Awareness: Check in with your body throughout the day—notice hunger, sleepiness, or stress cues instead of overriding them for productivity. Prioritize Genuine Connection Over Outcome: In relationships, focus more on the quality of your shared experiences and less on optimizing them for external validation. Cultivate Hobbies Without a Goal: Practice a hobby just for the sake of enjoyment and creativity, not for achievement or performance. Allow for Boredom and Unstructured Time: Create intentional moments for daydreaming, idleness, or simply "being" to spark connection and creativity. Respond to Emotional Needs, Not Just Tasks: In your partnerships, notice patterns rather than isolated actions and bring more grace, flexibility, and emotional presence to everyday interactions. Would you like to feel closer to your partner? Would you like to communicate better? Lisa continues the conversation today with Dr. Cheryl Fraser, Buddhist psychologist, sex therapist, author, and speaker. She cites studies and shares examples about ways to have deeper conversations. She suggests talking with your partner without an agenda, just sharing and listening. She explores research that talks about sharing adventures with your partner, especially doing an intense and exciting activity together. Dr. Cheryl talks about how important it is to do new and different things together to break the typical routine. She suggests going on dates with your partner. It can be thrilling and bring us back to the early days of dating, when there was effort and intentionality. You can find hobbies together and make it a priority. It's important to carve out time and energy for each other. It is possible to be romantic and present with each other again. Dr. Cheryl has a popular podcast called "Sex, Love, & Elephants," and her latest book is "Buddha's Bedroom–The Mindful Loving Path to Sexual Passion and Lifelong Intimacy." Info: drcherylfraser.com. This is Part 2 of the interview.
From a working class girl in Ayrshire, fuelled by teenage rage at Margaret Thatcher, to becoming the first female First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon has one of the most extraordinary political journeys of our time. And now, for the first time, she's telling it on her own terms. In this chat with Josh recorded live at the Aye Write Book Festival in Glasgow, Nicola opens up about the crippling imposter syndrome that followed her all the way to the top, and how she learned to turn that inner voice from a handicap into a superpower. She talks candidly about navigating a world built for men, the double standards, the authority gap, and why Boris Johnson deliberately messes up his hair before going on camera. She reflects on the heartbreak of the Scottish independence referendum and what that taught her about failure, her deeply personal decision to speak publicly about her miscarriage, and the unfounded rumours about her private life that spread from social media all the way to her parents' front door. She also shares what it was really like to have audiences with the late Queen, meet Hillary Clinton on a 10 out of 10 hangover, and go clubbing at university with a certain Gerard Butler. And after a lifetime of speaking for a government, a party, and a country, she talks about what it finally feels like to speak only for herself. Do you believe that humans should mate for life? Is this natural? Relationships can be tough, especially long-term ones. It takes daily practice and patience. Today's guest is Buddhist psychologist, sex therapist, author, and speaker Dr. Cheryl Fraser. She talks about "modern marriage" and relationships. In the past, marriages were arranged, or people came together for the good of the tribe, the farm, and raising children together. She examines questions like, "Is long-term love dead?" and is "til death do us part" still relevant. People who are attempting monogamy may have a tough time. She suggests that long-term relationships can be used as a way to grow. Between 25-45% of people will end up in a divorce. And in certain places, it's much higher. In second marriages, the divorce rate is actually much higher. Dr. Cheryl mentions that there are many alternative ways to be in relationships. Younger people are no longer getting married early. They are waiting until they are older. We change so much in our teens and 20s, and she suggests that we do not rush into marriage. Take time for independence. Long-term love is possible; it just needs help sometimes. She talks about the most important factors in any relationship, including intimacy, communication, fair fighting, and how to repair and apologize if necessary. Dr. Cheryl has a popular podcast called "Sex, Love, & Elephants," and her latest book is "Buddha's Bedroom–The Mindful Loving Path to Sexual Passion and Lifelong Intimacy." Info: drcherylfraser.com.
For more information on how to control your anger, visit angersecrets.com.In this episode, anger expert Alastair Duhs shares three practical steps to help you improve your relationship starting today. Whether the arguments have become more frequent, the conversations that matter have quietly stopped or there's just a low-level tension that never fully goes away, this episode explains exactly what's getting in the way and what to do about it.Rather than offering generic communication tips, Alastair gets to the root of what most struggling relationships are actually missing, and walks through three specific, learnable steps he's used with couples over 30 years. And the good news is that most relationships aren't broken. They're just missing a few things that can be learned.Key Takeaways:Anger is like a leak in a boat. You can try harder, communicate better, go on more dates. But if the anger isn't dealt with first, you're fighting a losing battle. When one partner walks on eggshells, real intimacy becomes impossible. You can't be close to someone you're slightly afraid of, and unmanaged anger is almost always at the root of it.Most people think "communicate better" means express yourself more clearly. The more important half is listening, really listening, not just waiting for your turn. The fastest way to change the dynamic in a relationship is for one person to genuinely start listening to understand rather than listening to respond. It changes everything. The Magic Six Hours (a concept from relationship researcher Dr. John Gottman) shows that just six hours of small, intentional connection per week is enough to transform a relationship over time.Simple isn't the same as easy. These steps take real commitment. But in 30 years of working with couples, Alastair has seen them transform relationships people had almost given up on.Resources & Next Steps: If you'd like support reducing conflict and building a calmer, more loving relationship:Visit AngerSecrets.comBook a free 30-minute phone callAccess the free training on "Breaking The Anger Cycle"
From playing Dr. Carter in ER, swearing he'd never do another medical drama, to starring in and exec producing the Emmy Award-winning HBO series The Pitt, Noah Wyle has made one of the great TV comebacks. And this time, it's personal. In this chat with Josh, Noah opens up about why The Pitt feels different: it's a raw, unflinching look at the American healthcare system post-Covid, tackling subjects rarely seen on screen including mass shootings, fentanyl, the border crisis, the nursing shortage, incel culture, and trans rights. He talks about why portraying doctors' mental health playing Doctor Robby on the front line matters, and why he thinks men find it so hard to talk about their own. He's candid about seeking therapy throughout his life and why it's been quietly fundamental to who he is today. Noah also reflects on what it feels like to have found huge success in his twenties with ER, and then rediscovered it all over again in his fifties, with a Golden Globe, Emmy, and an Actor Award for his role in The Pitt. He talks about how George Clooney taught him the value of teamwork, why he felt like an imposter for years until now, why they made the decision to ban phones from the set of The Pitt and how The Pitt brought him and his mum, a former medical professional, so close that they've lobbied together in Washington for healthcare workers. From singing her way into our hearts with her sister Chloe to becoming the Little Mermaid — and now leading a brand new rom com, ‘You, Me and Tuscany' which is in cinemas now— Halle Bailey is proving she's just getting started. In this chat with Josh, Halle opens up about learning to balance a thriving career with new motherhood, the strong women who shaped her, dealing with hair inequality and why she's a firm believer in speaking things into existence. She also reflects on what it meant to step into the role of Ariel — and how she rose above the wave of criticism that came with it. Of course we also talk about Halle's new movie, ‘You, Me and Tuscany' too, the white washing of rom-coms, why it shouldn't be a surprise to see two Black leads in a rom com and what made this project extra special: it was her first time ever working with a woman director. From playing Club Rep in The Inbetweeners movie to the star of Divergent, The White Lotus, The Gentlemen, and now action thriller Fuze (out in cinemas now) — Theo James has quietly won us all over. In this chat with Josh, Theo opens up about the pressure of being a leading man in an industry obsessed with physicality, and why the rise of the manosphere worries him deeply. He reflects on a culture increasingly defined by money and status over relationships and morality — and what that means for young men today. He also gets candid about his short-lived music career, his UN Ambassador work with refugees, and fighting with Anthony Hopkins. Rudi breaks down the mental, physical, and energetic bodies, the neuroscience of manifestation, and why most people unintentionally sabotage their dreams without even knowing it. And he does it all in a way that's practical, simple, and powerful as hell. Some of the biggest takeaways you'll hear are why the first 20 minutes of your day dictate your ability to lead, love, and create; how shifting your emotional state literally rewires your destiny; why giving selflessly of your insight, finances, and time accelerates abundance; how your energy influences people before your words ever reach them; and how coherence, not stress is the real superpower behind sustainable success. This conversation is an invitation to remember who the F you are, take ownership of your emotional world, and show up as the most aligned, whole, powerful version of yourself. Maya Rudolph, the mother of comedy and the only person to ever make me wet myself with laughter (so far) joins us today! Maya's rise to the top of comedy started on ‘Saturday Night Live' with iconic sketches with the likes of Amy Poehler and Kristen Wiig before she went on to win SIX Emmys, and of course bring us so much joy in one of the greatest movies of all time, ‘Bridesmaids'. Maya is currently taking on her first lead role, playing the billionaire Molly who tries to redeem herself with a charitable foundation in one of my favourite TV shows, Apple TV+'s ‘Loot'. It's so funny, it's pure escapism and as ‘Loot' returns for a third season on 15th October we chat about how comedy helped Maya find her people, herself and her confidence. In this episode I also teach Maya about some key iconic moments from British pop culture involving Posh and Becks and we chat about what's in our dressing up boxes, the incredible advice she got from Bill Murray, straight men confidence and her incredible work playing Kamala Harris on ‘Saturday Night Live'. There are laughs and some special moments in this episode, as I think Maya shows a whole other side of her and if you love this chat as much as me please get in touch. Are you obsessed with the TV show, ‘The Girlfriend' on Prime Video AND the show's star Olivia Cooke? In case you have no idea what I am talking about, ‘The Girlfriend' follows Olivia Cooke's character Cherry as she goes toe-to-toe with her overbearing mother-in-law, Laura, played by Robin Wright with disastrous consequences. It is TV at its best and you have to watch it ASAP! Back to the podcast… you have been LOVING our recent episode with Olivia Cooke - who you will also know from ‘House of The Dragon', ‘Ready Player One', ‘Slow Horses' and so much more - so I thought why not treat you to a special bonus episode with Olivia! When we recorded the episode at the London Podcast Festival I opened up the floor to audience questions and they were sooooo good I had to turn them into an episode. Olivia shares so many incredible pieces of life advice in this special episode including one of my all time favourite lines on the podcast, “shoulders back babe!” So next time you feel like an imposter in any room, remember to pull those SHOULDERS BACK BABE and walk in with the confidence that you belong. I hope this brings you as much joy and inspiration as it did me and our incredible audience and if you love this and Olivia's episode you can also check out episode 116 where Olivia joined us with her House of Dragon co-star, Emma D'Arcy. And as always please get in touch, I love to chat to you. You can find me on @joshsmithhosts across socials. Love, Josh x P.S. Anyone with a passing familiarity with Buddhism will know that “delusion” is rarely, if ever, mentioned in a positive way. In fact, the Buddha included delusion (aka: confusion about the way things really are) on his list of “the three poisons.” The whole point of meditation, per the Buddha, is to uproot delusion -- along with greed and hatred. Only then can you be enlightened. My guest today is here to valiantly make the case that delusion -- or self-deception -- has an upside. Many upsides, in fact. While he concedes that self-deception can, of course, be massively harmful, he argues that it also plays a vital role in our success and wellbeing, and that it holds together friendships, marriages, and nations. Understanding this, he says, can make you happier, more effective, and -- crucially -- more empathetic with people with whom you disagree. Shankar Vedantam is the host of the popular podcast and radio show Hidden Brain. His latest book is called Useful Delusions: The Power and Paradox of the Self-Deceiving Brain. In this episode we talk about: the many ways our brains filter and alter our perception of reality why we evolved for a robust capacity to lie to ourselves and how his research on delusions has colored his view of the chaos and confusion of our modern world. Teyana Taylor can do it all: she's a singer, songwriter, actress, model, dancer, choreographer, and director and in this episode of ‘Reign' Teyana proves she is an incredible philosopher too, because WOW the amount of great advice she shares in this episode is off the charts! Teyana first came to our attention in the MTV show, ‘Super Sweet 16.' Her reality TV stints led to her choreographing for Beyonce and launching a music career with huge hits like ‘Gonna Love Me'. All before she announced she would retire from music to pursue acting. Plot spoiler - in case you don't know already - after a five hiatus Teyana returned to music this year with her new album, ‘Escape Room'. After securing roles in ‘A Thousand and One' and ‘Coming to America 2', Teyana is now getting deserved Oscar buzz for starring alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn in Paul Thomas Anderson's ‘One Battle After Another' which is out in cinemas from 26th September. Teyana plays revolutionary Perfidia, part of the French 75 revolutionary movement fighting against right wing politics. It's certainly a timely movie which raises questions around migrants, racism and white supremacy and it's truly one of the best movies of the year which will hopefully get us all talking. Teyana joins me for a deep chat, which shows a whole other side of her, as she talks about everything from the power of patience to operating in survival mode. Get your notepad and pen out whilst listening to this episode because there are so many quotes you need to live by! If you love listening to Teyana as much as I did, get in touch, as I always love chatting to you and you can find me @joshsmithhosts across socials. Love, Josh x P.S. I am so excited to share this episode with the one and only Olivia Cooke, which we recorded live from the London Podcast Festival! Olivia has shown us so much range on screen from big movie blockbusters like Steven Spielberg's ‘Ready Player One' to playing THE Allicent Hightower in ‘House of The Dragon.' But as you will discover in this episode Olivia serves just as much range when chatting off screen. As Olivia takes on the role of Cherry in your new TV obsession ‘The Girlfriend' on Amazon Prime we chat about her journey from growing up in Oldham to starting work at 18 and all the lessons, challenges, successes and failures she's encountered along the way. Prepare to laugh a lot as Olivia as she shares hilarious stories including one involving a merkin and to be uplifted too as Olivia opens up about her mental health journey and the power of friendship.
