The owner of Goodlands Food Co, Anna Dausman, joined us to take a more in-depth look into her career and what ultimately led Anna to building a business based on hot sauces.  As a young girl, Anna already showed an entrepreneurial spirit--making her first attempt at a culinary career with a cake-baking business.  Although that initial concept did not pan out, she nevertheless pursued a career which created opportunities for others to build up themselves and their communities.  And as another opportunity knocked, Anna found herself drawn back to the culinary world while growing ghost peppers in her plot of land at her local community garden.  Soon she found herself making hot sauces that everyone loved, and Goodlands Food Co. was born!  Today, you can hear all about Anna's story and what she offers when you tune into the show...and then check out her website to find where her products are sold in your local area!https://goodlandsfood.coInspiration can strike at any point, and Diane Holtaway knows that more than most individuals who start a new business, so after years of helping others build and refine theirs, Diane set out to start a business of her own. Today, Diane owns Heirzoom Bakery which has been steadily growing since its inception.  Her concept was to offer authentic ethnic baked goods the way they were meant to be...meaning she uses natural, quality ingredients without all the chemicals and additives you'll find in store-bought brands and on the shelves of bakeries and/or the baked goods aisles.  Her biggest inspiration was her Aunt Betty, who made Kiffles (a popular Hungarian Pastry) for family gatherings and women's groups and never came back home with any leftovers. Inspired to share the love, Diane pays homage to both her Aunt Betty and the Kiffles via her hand-baked versions called Fennomes.  Today, you can taste those cookies (and more) when you order them online and have them shipped to your door, or by visiting her website!https://heirzoombakery.comfb: https://www.facebook.com/fennome/

Imagine this: being so meticulous in your candidate screening process invites an unexpected face-to-face investigation from Federal Agents. That is what our special guest, Lee Ann Howard, had to go through when starting as a recruiter in her early 20s. The secret to her 'suspicious' expertise? Simply asking the right questions and listening carefully to candidates.   Lee Ann is the visionary Founder of Howard & O'Brien Executive Search. With a keen eye for identifying top talent in senior management roles and a specialization in HR, finance, and sales and marketing functions, Lee Ann stands as a beacon of excellence in the realm of executive search.   You will surely enjoy Lee Ann's insights on how to build a continuous pipeline of senior management roles for your clients and what it takes to have long-lasting strategic client relationships.   Episode Outline and Highlights 01:18 How Lee Ann left broadcasting to get into recruitment.  05:05 What made Lee Ann stand out in her early years; Her astonishing story of why she had to be investigated by the government because of her recruitment activities. 12:05 Emphasizing learning and development. 20:04 From corporate to executive search - Lee Ann shares her transition.  27:15 Discussion on the board recruiting business model of Howard & O'Brien. 45:48 Lee Ann explains their Conversation with the Board program. 48:38 Discussion on their Reverse Placement program. 51:17 How to cultivate long-term strategic client relationships. 57:30 Making it a family business - how Lee Ann's children eventually joined her in the business.   Unexpected Government Investigation for Doing a Thorough Job Lee Ann shared an astonishing story about being investigated by federal agents because of their extensive knowledge of security-cleared roles and positions.    “I ended up getting investigated by the government because they thought I was a spy because I knew too much … I literally got visited. I was visited by the government. It was unbelievable because I was sitting in my office and the receptionist came back and they said, there's somebody here from the government to see you. And I'm like, I've paid my taxes because that's the only thing I thought I could possibly do wrong. And I got taken into a conference room and they said, we believe you know too much about what's happening. And I'm like, no, I'm not a spy. I don't work for Russia.”   This made her realize that she was probably doing something right if she was getting information that other people were not getting in their industry. Indeed she was! Asking the right questions, and being meticulous in her job, contributed highly in her success as a recruiter and later on as a recruitment business owner. Some of the takeaways on Lee Ann's success factors are as follows:   Instinctive Recruiting Ability Curiosity and Continuous Learning  Strong Relationship Building Commitment to Hard Work Personalized Approach  Client and Candidate Engagement Being Not Focused on Sales, But on Relationships    Which of the above success factors resonate most with you as a recruiter or business owner? Board Recruiting, Conversation with the Board, and Reverse Placement Programs Lee Ann also discussed key strategies that they implement in Howard & O'Brien with the focus of providing a continuous stream of C-level talents to their clients. The three main programs she discussed are Board Recruiting, Conversation with the Board, and Reverse Placement. Below are the key concepts of the programs:   Board Recruiting Board recruiting is the process of identifying and placing individuals in board positions for organizations. Unlike traditional executive search, it involves adding responsibilities rather than replacing someone. The process includes:   Engaging with CEOs, board chairs, or governance committees to define the board's needs. Creating a strategic long-term plan for board composition. Ensuring cultural fit and alignment with the company's strategic direction.   Conversation with the Board This is a program aimed at increasing diversity and exposing more candidates—particularly women—to board opportunities. It was developed as a way to help executives, who may not see themselves as board material, realize their potential for board service. It involves:   Facilitating networking opportunities between potential board members and current board leaders. Encouraging companies to consider non-traditional candidates who bring valuable perspectives.   Reverse Placement Programs This is a specialized career development service for executives looking to join boards. It is either funded by companies or individuals and serves as a way for leaders to continue their professional growth. It provides:   Guidance on positioning oneself for board roles. Strategic networking with board leaders.   These programs put Lee Ann's team in a strategic position, providing them a long-term relationship-building with existing clients.    Cultivating Long-Term Strategic Relationships On this topic, Lee Ann summarized what can make you stand out with the following experience she had: “What makes you different is what you're trying to do. And I think it's the little things. There was a marketing person that I was interviewing for a job and she knew I'd just gotten a new puppy and she sent me this little assortment of stuff for my puppy. Now I still remember that because, I mean, she listened to what I was saying. It, you know, she probably spent $20 on it. But what an impact.”   It is indeed the little things you do. Some of the best practices that Lee Ann and her team have been doing over the years are as follows: Long-Term Value Over Transactions – They prioritize relationships rather than quick sales, consistently providing valuable insights, industry articles, and strategic advice.   Community Engagement – Each team member is involved in community initiatives, reinforcing their reputation as good corporate stewards and deepening trust with clients.   Personalized Touchpoints – They maintain relationships through handwritten thank-you notes, customized gifts (e.g., olive oil or cherry salsa), and small but meaningful gestures that make an impact.   Being Helpful Beyond Business – They go beyond recruitment by assisting clients in unexpected ways, like recommending a plumber and reinforcing their role as trusted advisors.   Their approach is centered on authenticity, generosity, and a long-term mindset, setting them apart from competitors. As Lee Ann concluded, “It is putting yourself second and putting others first.”   Lee Ann Howard Bio & Contact Info As Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Howard & O'Brien, Lee Ann Howard brings with her a passion for understanding people and dedication to following their journey in executive leadership. In her 25 years of connecting high-caliber candidates with her clients, she has solidified her reputation in driving quantifiable success for million and billion-dollar companies across North America.    Lee Ann leads a Women-Owned Business and carries this spirit into diversity, inclusion, and equitable placement strategies.    Lee Ann founded Conversations with the Board® in 2001 and continues to lead workshops for those who serve or have the desire to serve boards. She is currently on the board of the American Heart Association as Leadership Development Co-chair and past Board Chair as well as Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) Family Business Center Advisory Committee. She has served on the boards of MetroHealth Foundation Board - Membership Committee Chair; the John Carroll University Entrepreneur Association - Executive Committee; In Counsel with Women - Membership Chair, The Gathering Place, Women's Community Foundation, and Business Volunteers Unlimited (BVU).   Lee Ann is especially passionate about and involved in the shared impact of individuals in greater Cleveland. Small Business Sales & Strategy | How to Grow Sales, Sales Strategy, Christian Entrepreneur

Hello & welcome back to Sales & Business Growth for BUSY Women. I am your host, Lindsay Fletcher.  I'm a wife of 18 years, mom of 4, multi-business owner, and your resident sales and time management nerd. I'm here to help you sell more, get time back in your day, and grow your business.   Please hit that follow button wherever you are listening to this podcast - it really blesses me big time and I'd love for more people to find this show because I know it can help so many women out there - maybe you could share it with a business friend?  Just a thought and I'd be so thankful if you did!!!   In the last episode of the podcast, I talked a little bit about this study that found that women-run businesses are 11% less productive than male-run businesses. One of the contributing factors to this low number is high household work allocation and other cultural norms that make women less available for business matters than men, and the article I referenced suggested that we as women have to learn more effective ways of time management so that we can start to make-up some of that 11%.     There were 5 categories where women-run businesses performed poorer: Impacted by crime.   Adverse business environments, like power outages. Digital economy is key for women-run businesses. Lack of access to foreign investment.    Firm age.  In this study, women-owned businesses shined in 2 categories and challenges this productivity gap: Smaller size when compared to male-run organizations showed to be an advantage.   Female run businesses had an advantage in the retail sector of business.   So here's where my head goes - my experience as a woman, while this may not have been your experience, is that I was not taught how to manage money, make it grow, how to build a business, and everything that I teach on this podcast I've either figured out myself through trial and error (you win some, you lose and learn on some) or sought out education to better prepare myself for business.  I still have a lot of gaps in business like financial literacy, investing and learning investor driven business, business law, taxes, etc. And I know from talking to many women in business that they have gaps in knowledge too but can't afford to spend thousands of dollars to get the education they feel they need.  If that's you, then join my Women in Business Community because you'll want what I've got planned for 2025. I've talked about my online women in business community briefly on the podcast before, and I have big plans for 2025 inside there. I'm bringing on a leadership team of business experts that will be providing weekly training on a variety of topics, and you'll have access to these experts and will be able to ask questions inside our community so that you can grow your business, better manage your finances, do things the right and legal way, sell more, market better, manage your time and energy better.  All of this training will be for free, provided at no charge to you.  I personally know these leaders. We've spent time together. They are women that I trust, and I believe that this leadership team will help you take your business to the next level - wherever that is for you!!! Inside the Frame

As a professional custom picture framer and host of the Inside the Frame podcast, I love talking with other creative entrepreneurs about their journeys. In this episode, I enjoyed chatting with Shelby Hamilton, a talented artist in Charleston, South Carolina.  Shelby's story is one that many artists can relate to - she started unsure if art could be a full-time career but eventually took the leap to pursue her passion. We dove into Shelby's background studying graphic design and studio art at the University of Georgia and how that education shaped her artistic style today. I was fascinated to learn about her process for commissions versus personal work and how she balances the business side with her creative flow.  As a framer myself, I especially enjoyed hearing Shelby's thoughts on framing her own pieces and working with local framers. Her enthusiasm for trying new mediums and techniques was inspiring. Key Takeaways Shelby studied graphic design in college, which gave her a foundation in color theory and composition that informs her art today. She took the leap to pursue art full-time in 2019, overcoming self-doubt and skepticism from others. Shelby enjoys working in various mediums and subjects, from detailed animal portraits to loose, abstract pieces. For commissions, she has a structured process to gather client input and provide progress updates. She recommends artists trust their framer's expertise but also provide input on their vision for the finished piece. It was a joy to chat with Shelby about her artistic journey and business. Her story is a great reminder that with passion and perseverance, we can turn our creative dreams into reality. I hope her insights inspire other artists and entrepreneurs to pursue their goals. About Shelby Born and raised in Augusta, Georgia, Shelby grew up loving art. She spent years of her childhood coming to Charleston, South Carolina, where she was exposed to a vast range of fine artists from a young age. Knowing she wanted to pursue a career as an artist, She graduated from the University of Georgia's Lamar Dodd School of Art with a BFA in Graphic Design. While attending, she fell in love with various artistic techniques and decided to move to Charleston, where her passion for art began. She became the Graphic Designer for an international makeup brand while working nights and weekends on commissioned pieces. Shelby began her career as a full-time artist in 2019. She showcases various mediums and artistic styles throughout her work while drawing inspiration from her love of design, color, texture, shadow, and light.  Resources Website Instagram

In this episode, I had the pleasure of chatting with Rhonda Feinman, a seasoned picture frame manufacturer with over 40 years of experience in the industry. Rhonda's journey into frame-making wasn't a childhood dream, but rather a serendipitous career path that she fell into and grew to love. Her passion for creating high-quality, historically accurate reproduction frames has made her a respected figure in the framing world. We dive into Rhonda's approach to frame design, which often draws inspiration from Spanish and Dutch frames, as well as her preference for simple white gold frames. She shares insights into the challenges of running a frame manufacturing business in New York City, including the difficulties of finding skilled craftsmen in the post-pandemic era. Rhonda's commitment to quality over trendiness shines through as she discusses her design process and the importance of understanding historical roots in creating modern frames. Key Takeaways Rhonda emphasizes the importance of creating a high-quality product and enjoying her work with customers to maintain passion in the framing industry.  Many frame-making techniques used today were perfected during the Renaissance, with only minor modern adaptations. Rhonda's company focuses on quality, choosing to work with customers who value craftsmanship. The framing industry has seen a broadening interest in better quality products, which Rhonda believes elevates everyone's work. Rhonda stresses the importance of continuous learning and openness to new knowledge in the framing industry. Throughout our chat, Rhonda's dedication to her craft and her practical, no-nonsense approach to business shines through. Her story is a testament to the rewards of finding passion in unexpected places and the value of maintaining high standards in craftsmanship. In this episode of Inside the Frame, I sit down with Susan Boni, a veteran custom picture framer with decades of experience in the industry. Susan grew up in the framing business, working in her parents' shop from the age of 12. She's seen the industry's evolution firsthand and has a wealth of knowledge to share. Throughout our conversation, Susan emphasized the importance of loving what you do and connecting with your customers personally. She shares insights into how she approaches each framing project, considering the client's personal style, the environment where the piece will be displayed, and the unique qualities of the artwork itself. Key Takeaways: When starting out, invest in basic, quality equipment. You don't need fancy, expensive tools to do great framing work. Take the time to get to know your customers. Ask about their homes, personal styles, and jobs. This will help you make frame selections that truly resonate with them. Don't be afraid to suggest unique, outside-the-box framing options. Sometimes, the most unexpected choices end up being the most loved. Educate your customers about the framing process and the materials you use. This helps them appreciate the value of your work. Embrace the power of social media and online resources to connect with other framers, learn new techniques, and showcase your work to potential customers. Susan's passion for her craft is evident in every word she speaks. Her commitment to creating beautiful, lasting framed pieces that her customers will cherish for generations is truly inspiring. Whether you're a seasoned framer or just starting out, this episode is full of wisdom and insights you won't want to miss. About Susan Boni Susan started Frames of Mine when she was 22, growing up in the family business since she was 12. She was the only family member who really loved it. Susan has an Art History and Interior Design degree from the New York Institute of Technology. She began to learn so much of the arts, mixed with sales from my family in the store, and she was able to combine it all into what the store has become. With a mastery of over two decades, Nina shared her epiphany of conquering the artistry of hair and feeling a magnetic pull towards new challenges. While she loves the art of hair, she desires to create a lasting impact and empower others to know that they are capable of their dreams, and doing something new that maybe makes her palms a little sweaty! Throughout their conversation, Nina highlighted the importance of women supporting and empowering one another. I mean can't we all be like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé? Nina shared stories of times when people judged her and had certain expectations because of society's “rules”. These judgements used to hold her back from reaching her full potential and living her life by her design, and now she's stepped into her power and knows she can help other women do the same.  ____________________ Let's Connect...
