Trying to find meaning in the face of grief is not easy. How often have you heard that you should focus on the positive? That kind of reaction is too common, and it can be unhealthy. It's normal — and human — to grieve. In this episode of The Limitless Podcast, grief coach Emily Bingham walks us through her grief journey and how it inspired her to build her thriving business, moveTHRU Grief. Resilience isn't ignoring pain and powering through it; it's learning to acknowledge and accept what life gives — even the negatives. A resilient mindset can help you through a lot, whether in life or business. Emily also shares how she created her brand to help people through their grief. If you're interested in finding out how to cultivate mental strategies during difficult times, don't miss this week's episode! Here are three reasons why you should listen to this episode: Learn to acknowledge your emotions — especially grief — and develop emotional mastery. Get inspired by moveTHRU founder Emily Bingham's entrepreneurial mindset and definition of true resilience.  Discover the benefits of a community for managing your mental health and creating a limitless mindset. Connect with Jamie and share your story: Instagram │ Website │Twitter │ LinkedIn Episode Highlights [05:10] Emily's moveTHRU her Grief Journey After losing her husband to cancer, Emily didn't know what to do with her life moving forward. Emily's company, moveTHRU Grief, began as a group meeting in her spin studio. She created a safe space for her clients to feel their emotions without judgment. moveTHRU helps people acknowledge and deal with their grief by finding their identity and purpose. Once you find yourself again, you can go on to live your life to the fullest — even after tragedy. [09:00] Stepping Up Into Business It all began with Emily sharing her family's grief journey through a GoFundMe page. Without realizing it, she was already meaning-making by telling her stories online. Emily found that sharing her experience was therapeutic and positively impacted other people. Sharing her life provided a new meaning to what she was doing. A heart-centered business is about sharing the wisdom and knowledge you have to speed others on their way, but it takes a lot of vulnerability. [12:53] Are All Grief Stories Supposed To Be Worthwhile?  Not every share on your socials needs a profound takeaway. Think of your social media presence as an online diary connecting you to people. Emily connected with other young widows, a connection she didn't have before. Sharing her grief story was a mutually beneficial experience. Death and grief are complex topics to tackle. However, you don't need to judge or compare yourself to others; everyone's grief is valid. Emily: “My authentic experience of grief is just as valid as theirs. It's just that it's different. And, that's been a huge growth edge for me, in terms of learning to trust myself and not need that external validation, or permission to show up as I am.”   Emily is still balancing showing up as a marketer and a widow online.  There will be people online who will still support you even if your content evolves. You can still pursue what energizes you and not get pigeonholed by your niche. [20:27] Grief Teaches Us Emotional Mastery Love is beneath the pain. Allow yourself to feel the negative emotions and excavate them so that you get to the love. It takes time, but learn to trust your feelings. Ignoring your feelings won't make them disappear; it might intensify them instead. Be curious about your emotions and ask yourself, "Why am I feeling this way?"  It isn't about always being happy or being done with grief after some time. Don't let your mind make up stories about your feelings; trust your intuition. [25:29] Resilient Mindset in the Face of Grief or Overwhelm Businesses don't run perfectly. A resilient mindset helps us handle low points and bounce back to better times. You develop a "grief muscle" as you face grief. This muscle builds into a resilient mindset that you can use elsewhere, even in entrepreneurship. You can grieve for someone alive, like when going through a breakup. You can also grieve for painful events like losing your job or living through a pandemic. Jamie: “Talking about this in the grand scheme of things, for the fact that there's businesses or strategies, but we're never gonna grow without some type of emotional mastery. I honestly think grief is like a boot camp. It's a masterclass in emotions and how to handle that.” [32:13] How Ian's Legacy Shaped moveTHRU Ian, Emily's husband, inspired her to pursue business instead of going back to corporate. moveTHRU has become her way of honoring his life through its impact on others. Even if your loved one is gone, celebrate their existence by doing the things they did back when they were still alive. They become our reason to push through with life.  We can't control everything in life, but there's power in choosing what to do with it. [36:34] Surprising Part Of Being An Entrepreneur Emily never thought that business would be fun, but she gets to be creative and share her heart every day. There's no right or wrong way to run a business. Entrepreneurship is fun, but it's a challenge. Having a supportive community can help you overcome the obstacles in your entrepreneurial journey. Jamie: “I'm the happiest I've ever been doesn't mean that I don't have a crying moment from time to time. But, I'm the happiest I've ever been because I know I can work myself through that. I know that I have a support system, a community, all of the things I would ever need to get back on top.” [39:18] Mastermind versus Course Programs Emily likes Masterminds because they support people for the time it takes to improve. Masterminds foster slow transformation.  The community built within a Mastermind feels like a family, which Emily likes because sometimes entrepreneurship can feel lonely. It offers a community to fall back on. There's no judgment or need to explain much, because everyone's going through similar experiences. Emily's future mastermind will be about helping people turn their pain into a meaningful business. Just like her experience, but with the benefit of a community. [43:59] Dealing with People who Judge Your Limits Emily doesn't have a background in mental health, and she does sometimes fear that her life experience alone won't be enough.  When people judge you and start putting limits on what you can do, it says more about their limits than yours. Emily thinks she provides value through her experience as a widow, even without certifications. Knowledge from experience is powerful because you learn from the school of life. [45:50] The Meaning of Limitless Limitless is boundless and beyond time and space. Emily sees it through a grief lens on how love is an eternal connection. Death kills a person, not a relationship. About the Guest Emily Bingham founded moveTHRU Grief in March 2019 after the passing of her husband from cancer. She turned to physical exercise as a spin and barre instructor and as a former ballerina to deal with her grief. She developed the moveTHRU method, which uses the principles of Acceptance & Commitment Theory and the TEAR Model of Grief. In her own words, “Jacki Carr is a goal coach, motivational speaker and mama. As a leader in transformation, she works with people to amplify their voices and expand their vision and goals to better the future of the World. She is a Senior Lightyear Leadership Coach and has worked with companies like lululemon, MINDBODY, Patagonia, and The North Face and truly values companies who care for their people and the Earth.” Julia has been drawn to Jacki for years - she is enamored by her witty intellect, love of books, her magnetic energy, and her mindful perspective. Therefore, she was so grateful that Jacki agreed to join the podcast to provide deep insights and deep laughs.  We Discuss: Life pivots and what it feels like to no longer recognize nor relate to past versions of yourself Instagram: the performative nature of Instagram; the mental, emotional, and psychological impacts of social media and IG; boundaries - both with what you post and how often you're on the platform; the complex nature of using social media/IG as a tool for creating community, social activism, and learning  Motherhood: Jacki shares heartfelt stories from her pregnancies and how it helped her to start loving her body; her postpartum experiences; what it has been like to mother two daughters; and how motherhood has shaped her and her approach to visions and goals Visions and Goals: Jacki provides tangible advice for setting visions and goals during life pivots and times of uncertainty (like motherhood) - she shares the beauty of choice, staying curious in uncertainty, embracing failures, and leaving room for the unknown Questions Jacki Left Us to Ponder:  Where is community created if not on social media? Where do we find community off of social media? “How are you cultivating community within what you are consuming? And if you're not, can you?” Powerful Words from Jacki:  On Motherhood: “I really found that motherhood slapped me in the face, in the most graceful, loving way. Like a love slap. And was like, ‘hey wake up, it's gonna be different now, you gotta make some different choices, you gotta feel your way around, you fell in love with this body, cool now it's time to listen to that love…” On Parenting: “...parenting is such a reflection, moment to moment, second to second, of how you're showing up, where your nervous system is at, and how you recover… especially when tired or a little sad about the world or climate change or whatever it may be...and hold two emotions at one time, there's so much love and responsibility for your child while also navigating your own inner dialogue and emotions… On Motherhood/Parenting: “Again you have to be in this space of listening… sometimes we get this idea and notion that motherhood is so much about leadership and guiding your child and shaping your child. I think that's only a small part of it - for me, it's so much about listening to who they are and navigating from that place and it's daunting, Julia, because it can change your vision, it can change your goals in a snap.” On Visions and Goals: “I used to cling so tightly to my goals, which can be pretty performative, you want to check a goal off because people might have read it or saw you post about it. And yet the human experience has grace, delete and edit and those buttons are because of uncertainty and mistakes and take twos and children that show you a different way of being. So I always have more than one vision, you can write your goals in pencil, and I befriend uncertainty as most likely the only constant that is available.” On Goals and Community: “Goals don't happen without community.” Resources: Website: https://www.jackicarr.com/ (JackiCarr.com ) Email: Hello@JackiCarr.com Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/jackicarr/ (@JackiCarr) Books/Podcasts/People Mentioned:  http://www.elizabethplank.com/ (Liz Plank) https://manenough.com/podcast/ (The Man Enough Podcast)...

Here we are, a new year, with new resolutions. Did you know that Research shows about 60 percent of us make New Year's resolutions but only about 8 percent are successful in achieving them. That’s horrible results. I’ve been there too many times. I set a goal, and about 3 weeks into it, I’ve failed. Because I failed to keep my promise to myself, then I feel like a failure. It’s not a healthy way to start the new year. I’m not a goal coach, and goals are important! They’re the roadmap to how to get to where you want to be. If you love goal setting, you have to listen to next week’s episode with the ultimate goal coach, Jacki Carr of GoalSPEAK.  She will help you get motivated, lay out a clear plan and stay motivated and excited to reach and achieve your biggest goals. Maybe it’s the hippie empath in me, but I’ve found that tuning into my feelings, rather than resolutions, speak more to my heart, help lead me to my goals and tether me to how I want to live my life every day. We’re coming into a new decade. A very powerful decade. 2020 baby! It’s time to really come home to yourself and step into the person you want to be. This is not another year to set goals and break your promise to yourself. This is a time to set your intention of how you want to feel, live that feeling each day and let that feeling be your GPS guiding you to your goals and dreams.  Usually we set a goal not because of the end result, but because of how it makes us feel. Focusing on intention and feeling rather than a just getting to the goal usually is stronger and successful because it’s deeply ingrained in your motivation. For example, the goal of losing weight to get into your skinny jeans is not as powerful if you don’t tap into the feeling behind the goal. I had been wanting to give up caffeine for years. I tried and always failed about a week into it. Being healthy wasn’t a big motivator for me. The WHY wasn’t strong enough. But after going through a miscarriage, a partial molar pregnancy and a cancer scare with two D&Cs and a recovery time of 11 months, the moment we found out we were cleared to start trying again for a baby was the day I quit caffeine cold turkey. How did I go from 2 cups of coffee a day to nada? My WHY was strong. I wanted to have a baby! The feeling of being healthy so that I could get pregnant was a huge motivator to help me reach one of my biggest goals of becoming a mother. When you can get really clear on your WHY, the intention, the feeling behind your goal, then you can faithfully take steps to get there and know that that goal is in alignment with really where you want to be. And the right steps will present themselves when you’re in alignment with your True Self - not the goals that sounds good on paper, but the goals or next actions that really light you up and fuel your spirit. You know that saying “our thoughts drive our behavior?” Well I believe our feelings drive our behavior. Let me explain. Our feelings are tied to our beliefs. Marie Forleo says our beliefs are something we hold true, even if they’re not. Beliefs are very powerful! Feelings are the undercurrent of our beliefs. Then our beliefs drive our thoughts which drive our actions.  It all starts with a feeling. Sometimes it can be hard to change a belief about ourselves, because we’ve spent decades reinforcing it with our thoughts. Begin to change your beliefs and patterns by focusing on a feeling – the why. So the question is, How do you want to feel this upcoming year? Today, I’ll guide you through 5 questions to tap into how you want to feel and let this intention of feeling this way through 2020 be your guide to how you can live this feeling every day. I invite you to get quiet and join me in on a guided meditation/ and journaling exercise. Grab a pen and your favorite journal and let’s get started. {Guided meditation + place hand on heart} Here are 5 steps to come home to yourself and how you want to feel this year.  The first 3 steps are borrowed from my favorite coach, Marie Forleo from her decade in review challenge.  There is a link in the show notes to her 2 videos. Typically, I review the past year and set goals for the upcoming year.  The last steps are from my signature program Soul School launching in April, providing you tools and techniques to help ground you back to your Soul and who you are meant to be. It’s about diving in deep, doing the work and coming home to yourself and how you want to feel every day. It’s about looking about your beliefs, how they hold you back and restructuring your beliefs so you become your biggest advocate and best friend. Change your beliefs. Change your life. Today is not about setting goals. It’s about getting clear of how you want to feel and creating a vow and promise to yourself with ways to get there – every day. There’s a powerful quote, “People overestimate what can be done in one year, and underestimate what can be done in ten.” Looking back on the past decade: 1. What are you most proud of and why? 2. What are your biggest lessons? The challenging times are where you learn the biggest TRUTHS about yourself.  I bet when you write down your lessons, you will have so many empowering nuggets of wisdom and advice to yourself. You are wiser than you give yourself credit! 3. What are you willing to release? goals or projects you’ve had on your To Do list for far too long resentments and emotional baggage habits or beliefs that don’t serve you 4. How do you want to feel? Create your 1-3 Soul Feelings Brainstorm: this is how we feel when we are deeply connected to ourselves. This is not how you think you should feel.  get quiet from your mind and tune into your heart. How do YOU want to feel? this is totally just for you and will only make sense to you. You may have felt glimpses of this feeling or this may be an aspirational feeling you desire to feel or maybe you see another person who embodies this feeling. If you can imagine it or see this feeling in others, then it exists in you too. Take a big pause, breathe deeply, and place your hands on your heart: how do I want to feel? you may even say: I want to feel the opposite of what I’m feeling right now. write down as many feelings as possible. How does your heart want to feel? How do you want to feel? Pick 1-3 Soul Feelings and create your VOW: I want to feel: 1, 2, 3… 5. Brainstorm you SOUL ANCHORS: What do you need to do to stay connected to those feelings? So, now that you know how you want to feel and a bunch of ways to get you there, each day ask yourself, what do I need now to be in alignment with how I want to feel? Get quiet and tune into your heart and let your Soul speak and lead the way to the activities and thoughts that support you. It’s this sacred practice of coming home to yourself every day that will bridge the gap of how you currently feel and get you to how you want to feel. These small daily wins help you feel good and feeling good keeps you motivated and hopeful. When you are full, inspired and believe in yourself, you are more likely to be in alignment with achieving your biggest and loftiest goals. Goals that are based from a deep feeling are grounded in your truth. Having a strong why is what gets you to accomplish your biggest dreams. Feeling a certain way leads you to change patterns and believe in yourself. Rather than focus on an outcome, be present to how you want to feel each day. When you feel good, it’s easier to keep promises to yourself. Your Feelings create change that is lasting. Living your soul feelings will help you create pockets of daily moments you can come home to yourself, and weaving these little moments each day lead to a fulfilled and joyful life. Jacki Carr is a goal coach and motivational speaker. Jacki and Steph met 10 years ago, when Jacki was creating the vision of the life she lives today. Tune in to hear her describe how she lives into her goals and vision, while remaining spontaneous and present for her loved ones. They riff on Jacki’s ability to create so much and so often, and why busy doesn’t always need to carry a negative connotation; “I do well being busy. Busy is only a bad word when I have exceeded my time limit in a certain domain, i.e. career, and not spent time with my family. Or busy when it’s out of alignment with my values”. Jackie attributes her ability to create so prolifically to honouring her weird, honouring her busy, and honouring her relationship which supports her in doing it all. Despite this love of being in the flow, she still gets stuck all the time; “When I get stuck, I have to ask myself: am I being of service, am I honouring my whole self?” They talk what it means to have a goal and vision, and how to embrace when it changes and evolves - failing up, and deciding what’s next. From morning routines, to spontaneity as ritual, Jacki is living her bliss and we hope she inspires you to do the same. Show Links: https://www.jackicarr.com https://www.instagram.com/p/ByczL0mgNU_/

Can you live slow if you’re someone who enjoys being busy? What if you’re a Type A, go-getter? Or someone who prides themselves on setting goals and kicking them every single time? In today’s episode (the second-last of the season!) Brooke speaks with Elisa, who has spent the past year shedding many layers of her life and self-beliefs, but now finds herself stuck on how to distil the myriad ideas she’s absorbed in to real, lasting change – without reverting to living fast. Elisa shares the catalyst for making changes in her life before she and Brooke dig in to the question of values and personal identity. As a mum who is emerging from the parenting very young children phase, Elisa also spends some time digging in to the underlying motivations that might be driving her desire to be constantly busy. Brooke talks about finding contentment in the now, no matter how imperfect, and why the word ‘slow’ might actually be giving Elisa more stress than peace. Jacki Carr, values coach extraordinaire, then joins Brooke for a juicy discussion on how to uncover our personal values and design our legacy. As a self-confessed go-getter and serial goal kicker, Jacki has some incredible suggestions for Elisa to find pockets of slow intention on even the busiest of days, as well as how to reclaim space for your self amidst the work of parenting. Have a dream? Trying to achieve a goal? What's stopping you from going for it? Fear of failure is the number one reason stopping people from making goals in first place. Goals put us in a vulnerable spot light as we have a 50/50 chance: success or failure. Jacki Carr, goal coach, writer, motivational speaker, yogi, and mother of two daughters, joins guides us to help set and achieve goals. And according to Jacki, failure is an important part of the process. “Failure is slowly becoming a great friend of mine.” Jacki also helps us reframe how hiring a coach of any kind is an investment in ourselves, rather than an expense. Both Alex and Jacki each share some of their own goals and current barriers to reaching them. And currently in a tough place where self-care and goal setting sound overwhelming to you? Have you intentionally developed a crew of people in your corner to support you in living with your values? What are your thoughts on balance? It's like Christmas morning).Jacki and Mary Beth are the founders of Rock Your Bliss, a coaching and transformation company that I've deeply loved and today, we're talking about some of the biggest tools and topics I've resonated with in their coaching programs. In this episode, we deep dive on faith and trust. These two words alone bring up so much stuff and Jacki and Mary Beth explore how to practice trust when things feel wildly uncertain, when you're grasping at nothing, and in those moments when shit really does hit the fan. They also share how they return to wholeness and self acceptance in those minutes that can feel like weeks. We also touch on crafting an intentional social media practice and this concept of letting go of trying to "make it." As growth seeking beings, we're always on the lookout for what's next or trying to build our lives after we see what other people are doing. We talk a lot about letting go of this "I'll be happy when" syndrome that many of us dwell in. (Including myself at times when I'm not mastering my mindset).Lastly, we touch on intuition, creating space and stillness to the answers to come, and not always reaching for the next big thing. Plus, I adore their take on the importance of creating from abundance versus scarcity. So, tune in and listen to this episode, especially if you need a dose of faith and trust. Mary Beth LaRue is one of those people who even though they teach hundreds, if not thousands at festivals like Wanderlust, still feels so down-to-earth. As I happened to walk past her at Wanderlust Snowshoe, I recognized her and thought, "There is no way she will remember me from 3 years ago and from Instagram." But sure enough, she stopped mid sentence and came over and gave me a hug! Is that legit or what? MB is a co-founder + coach over at Rock Your Bliss, in which you may remember that her counterpart Jacki Carr was on episode #9. Aside from slaying it over in bliss land, she also teaches yoga at Wanderlust Hollywood and at several Wanderlust Festivals and 108s. Dream career, am I right? This woman is sure to make you wanna be her friend, and I was so pumped to talk 1:1 with her after girlboss-crushing since I met her 3 years ago. THIS WEEK'S GIRL TALK: Not shoulding on your meditation practice, yoga off the mat, how she created a full time yoga career, how she got over her fear of public speaking to teach hundreds, how internal work leads to external shifts, and reactionary self care versus proactive self care.

Have you ever looked up to someone a whole lot? You just totally love everything that they do and feel really connected to their message, their business, or how they live their life? Well that's how I feel about Jacki Carr of Rock Your Bliss, which is why I thought I was over my head when I decided to reach out to her for a podcast interview, even though we had met about 3 years prior... Lucky for me, the Goal Coach, Writer, Motivational Speaker, and Mama to Evergreen said hell yes, and I was in my own little bliss bubble while recording! #goalsalive as Jacki would say... This episode is pretty jam packed with goodness, but some of the topics are self care as a choice, not a should, The Sacred Pause, yoga as a metaphor for her self-evolution, motherhood, body image and role modeling, legacy, and Jacki's messy journaling practice. From teaching hundreds at Lululemon, to leading sold-out retreats in tree-houses, and speaking at Patagonia HQ, I am HONORED to have Jacki on this podcast, and I think you'll love her too!

Today's WANTcast guest is someone who's been on my list for a while now: goal coach Jacki Carr. Jacki’s become a highly sought-after pro in her arena who's helped hundreds of people across the globe not only reach their goals, but actually craft exactly what those goals look like, why they matter, and a path to them that is unique to every single person – personal goals, professional goals, whatever. I've met a lot of fantastic people over the internet through the years (holy jeez, just realized I made my first virtual friend at 12. Almost two decades. How did that happen?! [ps. it was a 14 year old girl who loved RENT as much as I did, natch]). What's interesting about Jacki is that we actually should have met in person. We've got about a zillion mutual friends, from fitness instructors we've both worked with to former Lululemon employees (Jacki used to work for Lulu) to various personalities in the Venice/Santa Monica region (where we both called home for one point in time), even people I've met through work that I'd never expect to have a mutual connection with - Jacki is our mutual connection. And it's not hard to see why: Jacki is gregarious to the core and electricity personified. People who meet her are swept up by her enthusiastic and vivacious personality and get hooked on her attention connection. In other words, they come for the spark and stay for the soul. Jacki has the ability to bring out the best in whoever she meets, whether it's in person or virtually. And yet, we'd never met. I was nervous to talk to her one-on-one for the very first time, as when you've connected with someone from afar you sometimes get nervous it won't be that great in person... Boy, was I wrong. We chatted like old friends, and it truly felt like I'd known her a lifetime ago. I know I'm not the only one who has felt this way, which is why I think Jacki is such a powerhouse: she makes everyone around her feel like family. The way I structure my podcasts is very, very loosely - I do a bit of research, I gather a few points I'd like to discuss, and then we just go. I end up rarely needing my notes, as each conversation unfolds so beautifully and naturally, and the women on the WANTcast really have a knack for being a next-level open book. With Jacki, it was just like that. I'd read somewhere that she identified with being an extrovert while her best friend and business partner, Mary Beth LaRue, was an introvert, and as an introvert myself, I was curious to hear the other side of the story when it comes to relationships with different personality types. What unfolded was even better than what I could have imagined. Her husband, turns out, is an introvert as well, and Jacki and I got to dive into the nuances of what happens when we're with our opposites, both in love and in life. Having grown up in an entirely extroverted family and always been attracted to extroverted personalities, I was sucked in by this (in a good way!). Other big things we talked about? Making friends later in life. As Jacki put it, "making new friends in your 30s is gnarly." She's just relocated to Denver after living in LA for quite some time, and we got down and dirty into the topic of navigating life transitions, from business rebranding to personal rebranding to pregnancy and even those little-big stages we all go through in life. Basically, the through-line of this episode comes down to one thing: rebranding your life. What I love is that Jacki’s not a life coach, and she’s not a therapist, she’s got a passion for GOAL SETTING and ACHIEVING specifically that just exudes from every single thing she does. I found this episode not just uplifting... but I was sitting for a WHILE after this call reflecting on my own goals and visions, and how I can use what I’ve been given to make my own unique impact both personally and professionally. I thought about the stages I've been through, and what kinds of changes I might want to make in the future. Hopefully, it’ll do the same for you too. *Little note: this is technically supposed to be the last episode of 2015, but I’m thinking that maybe we throw in an extra episode before the year is up! Not really sure what that looks like yet, but if you’d like that extra episode, shoot me a tweet, or leave me an Instagram comment and just say "YES!" I’ll know what you mean.
