#325 Jay Anderson of UWUW

UWUW came into being when Jay Anderson and Ian Blurton came together through a run of shows, backing mutual friend and singer/songwriter, Kate Boothman as her drummer, and guitarist, respectively. Anderson suggested bringing in Jason Haberman, a talented bassist, who Anderson had seen play with Toronto indie-folk band, The Wooden Sky. Realizing they didn't want an instrumental record, they layered on bright horns and smooth vocals, lifting the songs from instrumental jams, to the undefinable yet distinctive sound that is, UWUW. Saxophonist, Jay Hey, was brought in to provide horn arrangements, along with Tom Richards on trombone and Patrick McGroarty on trumpet, all three contributing on every song. The result is a blissfully cool album with music that will appeal to all listeners, from record store snobs, garage rock slobs, and even psych-pop heartthrobs! Canadian heavy metal trio CAULDRON will drop their New Gods full-length this Friday via The End Records in North America and Dissonance Productions in Europe. Crowned, "a classic heavy metal ripper," by Metal Injection, the band's fifth full-length and follow up to the acclaimed 2016 offering In Ruin was captured by Chris Stringer (Timber Timbre, Wooden Sky) at Union Sound in Toronto and again highlights the band's now-signature strong emphasis on songwriting and melody, complete with high-end organic production to match. Stream New Gods in full alongside an interview with frontman Jason Decay courtesy of New Noise Magazine, at THIS LOCATION. CAULDRON's New Gods will be available on CD, digital, and vinyl formats. For preorders go to THIS LOCATION. In conjunction with the release of New Gods, CAULDRON will be playing a handful of US shows in with support provided by Barrow Wight this week. The band has also confirmed a special record release show in their hometown of Toronto, set for September 15th at Junction City Music Hall. See all confirmed dates below. After calling it quits in 2006, frontman Jason Decay wasted no time in putting together CAULDRON to carry on his heavy metal vision. Leaders among the new wave of traditional heavy metal, CAULDRON - which features Decay alongside Ian Chains (guitar) and Myles Deck (drums) - has since released two EPs with Into The Cauldron (2007) and Moonlight Desires (2014) as well as four full-length albums: Chained To The Nite (2009), Burning Fortune (2011), Tomorrow's Lost (2012), and In Ruin (2016). The band has toured the world with the likes of Municipal Waste, Death Angel, Nevermore, Diamond Head, Enforcer, and in the summer of 2013, were invited to play Metallica's Orion Fest in Detroit. Burning Fortune was nominated for a Juno award in 2012 while the video for the single "All Or Nothing" has received almost 600,000 views on Youtube/Vevo and was featured in the video game RockBand. The Young Novelists, fronted by Graydon James and Laura Spink, have just released their third studio album “In City & Country”. The album was recorded in Montreal with producer Howard Bilerman who’s worked with Arcade Fire, Leonard Cohen and The Wooden Sky. According to Graydon and Laura, the album explores the idea of community through the lens of those stranger-than-fiction tales that get passed from neighbour to neighbour over a cup of coffee at the kitchen table. Each song was inspired by a different small town in Ontario – they actually travelled to and researched the history of the towns – and from those efforts distilled a group of songs that aim to tease apart what it means to belong and what it means to be an outsider, and how the communities we make share more similarities than differences. Which all sounds very intriguing. To learn more about the new album, we caught up with Graydon and Laura at home in Toronto. Visit The Young Novelists online at theyoungnovelists.com. Music: The Young Novelists “Come Around Again”, “All Alone”, “Two Of A Kind”, “City & Country” from “In City & Country” (2018, Self).

Mike chats with The Wooden Sky's Gavin Gardiner about the recording of their latest album, Swimming in Strange Waters, which sees the band exploring new, more psychedelic sounds. They also talk about beating a case of "demoitis" and whether he feels there is really a "Toronto scene" anymore. We also check in with Alejandra Ribera, who's currently overseas supporting her latest, This Island. She tells us about how moving to new cities - notably Montreal and Paris - and getting lost (literally) inspired her songwriting for this collection. She also talks about being too busy in her professional and person life to feel any pressure after winning the 2014 SOCAN Songwriting Prize. And finally, Marina Adam, the manager of the Ontario Music Office, fills us in on the Ontario Music Fund, whether it's having its desired effect, and why such government and industry financial support in the arts makes sense as an economic driver.

Another busy week of upcoming shows in Winnipeg, featuring The Wooden Sky, Jason Plumb, John Wort Hannam, and Spring Breakup, among others. We previewed those, had a listen to some Winnipeg classics, paid a birthday tribute to one of our most devoted listeners, and we still had plenty of time for new music from the mailbag and beyond!

Hey, hey, the gang's all here... well, for 2/3 of the show anyway. For the last half hour we ducked out to go to the Haiti relief fundraiser at WECC, but we left a present behind. Jeff came in on Monday to record an AMAZING live set with The Wooden Sky featuring conversation and the entire band playing live, in-studio!

It's KK & The Mudge in-studio this week as we play a wide variety of music, just the way we like it: some pop, some roots, some rock, all good.

We're certifying fall as officially here, as the busy late summer concert concert season is winding down. Sure, there are a couple of shows this week, including The Deep Dark Woods and Kent McAlister, but for the most part, we looked back at great shows past, and heard some great new music.

Another unbelievably busy week for concerts in Winnipeg, kicked off by one of the biggest hits at this year's Winnipeg Folk Festival, Amelia Curran, who stopped by the studio to sing us a couple of songs from her great new album Hunter Hunter. The week continues with The Other Brothers, Alana Levandoski, Elliott BROOD, and the return of the great Jesse DeNatale, among others. Even with a busy week like that, we managed to fit in some great new music.
