He co-founds and christens the neo-psychedelic pop group The Teardrop Explodes with Julian Cope but walks out of the band just as they are about to break big and goes to work in a tearoom instead. He then forms The Wild Swans, the indie-band of choice for literary-minded teens in the early 1980s, and Care with Ian Broudie of The Lightning Seeds, sharing a flat with a seventeen-year-old Courtney Love along the way. Marriage, fatherhood, tropical illness, and divorce follow, interspersed with artistic collaborations with Bill Drummond and members of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, among others. Following an onstage reunion with Cope at the Royal Festival Hall, Simpson discovers that seven thousand miles away, in the Philippines, he is considered a musical god. Presidential suites, armed-guards, police escorts you couldn't make it up, and, incredibly, he does' t need to. Revolutionary Spirit is the story of a musician driven by an unerring belief that artistic integrity will bring its own rewards. It concludes with an exorcism of sorts as Simpson finally rids himself of the debilitating demon of psychological depression that has, from the age of nine, run like malware in the background of his life.

We're back, and this time we've gone back 4 whole decades to talk about our favourite songs from 1984, including lots of jazzy indiepop, metal (from extreme to hair), german pop, and the mystery of whether Lionel Richie or Prince's girlfriend keep phoning Rockwell. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) -The Blue Nile, Billy Bragg, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Celtic Frost, Cocteau Twins, Lloyd Cole & The Commotions, Julian Cope, Dio, Echo & The Bunnymen, Everything But The Girl, Husker Du, Iron Maiden, Killing Joke, Kenny Loggins, Manowar, Metallica, Nena, Phil Oakey & Giorgio Moroder, Prefab Sprout, Prince, The Psychedelic Furs, Ratt, Lionel Richie, Rockwell, Sandie Shaw, The Smiths, Swansway, Thompson Twins, Ultravox, and Van Halen!Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7JDSRATZtdBU5yJtD4zbFM?si=256411ee4df7417aFind our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next month or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Bluesky - https://bsky.app/profile/wedigmusic.bsky.socialInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com

Some albums are deserving of the term 'gamechanger' and here's a massive one from 1994. The Prodigy's second album 'Music For The Jilted Generation' introduced so many people to dance music who might not previously have given it a second thought so we were very excited to do an episode on it. So excited in fact that we brought a guest in to help us out so huge thanks to Cliff Barnes from the Devil Times Five Horror Movie Podcast who is a Prodigy uber-fan as well with loads of insights. Among us we also talk about other acts and albums from the time like Downset, Killing Joke and Julian Cope. Oh and the Vengaboys of course but presumably that goes without saying. We also mention our May 2024 Brighton Fringe live shows, tickets for which are already on sale and can be bought from the website here. We'd love to see some friendly faces if you fancy coming along! And as always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. Then we tune in to learn about their earliest excursions playing outside the Charlestown loft, including their first show as Sunburned as part of an exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston. We hear how the interplay between these new locations and contexts provoked new modes of performance and artistic connections. They describe how an invitation to join a tour opening for No-Neck Blues Band (who were opening for John Fahey) prompted them to assemble their first CD – Mind of a Brother. After this tour story, we meet the rest of the band members interviewed for this podcast. Finally, we examine the chain of events that ultimately catapulted the band onto the international stage. In what I would call the better part of my life, I have had the companionship of the music of Ian McNabb, I got into his band "The Icicle Works" at age 13, diving into "New Wave" coming from the UK. Ian McNabb has had incredible longevity with his solo career, producing some of the best work over the last 30+ years since he went solo. Ian McNabb is from Liverpool England, and we talked at length about the local music scene that produced The Beatles, Echo & The Bunnymen, Julian Cope, and Frankie Goes To Hollywood. We covered in this episode some of our mutual friends, and his own music and what brought him to this point. He has recorded a lot with Neil Young, and was also playing with Mike Scott from "The Waterboys" (He was there when I first met him in 1998). This is an interview covering a great deal of music history, and the life of a veteran singer, dig in, Ian has a lot of great stories. #mikescott #thewaterboys #billybragg #theicicleworks #ianMaccullouch #juliancope #davidgrey #joewalsh #crazyhorse #neilyoung #billytalbot #inspiralcarpetsbandcamp website facebook youtube#raymanzarek #echoandthebunnymen #frankiegoestohollywood #briannash #hollyjohnson #liverpool #liverpoolmusic #scouserrock #thecure #thecramps #strangerthings

What the Riff?!?
1989 - January: Skid Row "Skid Row"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 6, 2023 40:36

Hair band Skid Row hails from Tom's River, New Jersay.  The band was formed in 1986 by bassist Rachel Boland and guitarist Dave "Snake" Sabo, and rounded out with guitarist Scotti Hill and drummer Rob Affuso.  Lead vocalist Sebastian Bach was recruited after being seen as a wedding singer at the age of 18 well before Adam Sandler would reveal this as a potential career option and path to love and fame.  Sabo was a high school friend of Jon Bon Jovi, and the two made a pact that if one was sucessful in the music business they would help the other out.  This led to Bon Jovi's manager Doc McGee seeking out Skid Row and getting them a contract with Atlantic Records in 1988.Skid Row was the band's eponymously titled debut album, and it would prove to be a huge success over time.  Though it received mixed critical reviews, the album went to number 6 on the Billboard 200 charts, and would be certified 5x platinum in 1995 by the RIAA.  The band headlined tours for Bon Jovi and Aerosmith in 1989-1990.  Bach would be the front man for the band for their first three albums until 1996, when friction between himself and Sabo led to his departure.  Skid Row is still active as of 2022, and has released six albums to date.John Lynch takes the helm on this album in his debut as a permanent member of the What the Riff crew. Youth Gone WildThis rocking anthem was the first single released from the album.  No matter what walk of life you are from, you are one of us - the youth gone wild.  Be true to yourself and not to what others expect of you.  "Hi man, there's something that you oughta know.  I tell ya Park Avenue leads to Skid Row."I Remember YouThe third single would be the one to really put Skid Row on the map.  It is a power ballad depicting a guy who can't get over a long lost love.  Bass player Rachel Bolan contributed the lyrics.  The line "love letters in the sand" was also the title of a number 1 hit from 1957 by Pat Boone.Sweet Little SisterA deeper cut that sounds a lot like Motley Crue chronicles the trouble that a boy crazy sister of a member of the band can create.  "For such a sweet little lady I would swear she's rotten to the core.  Oh yes she got her hands in the cookie jar."18 and LifeThis darker ballad tells the story of Ricky who kills someone with a gun while drunk and is sentenced to life in prison.  Dave "Snake" Sabo and Rachel Bolan wrote the song after reading a story in the local paper about an 18 year old who accidentally killed his friend with a gun he thought was unloaded.  ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme song from the animated series “ALF:  The Animated Series” After its "real life" series, the cat-munching alien ALF returned in animated form.  It finished its run in 1989. STAFF PICKS:Charlotte Anne by Julian Cope Bruce leads off the staff picks with a forgotten song that hit number 1 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart at the time.  This is the first single from Cope's fourth solo album "My Nation Underground," an album that Cope considers to be a poor album.  Julian Cope comes out of the Liverpool punk scene, and his solo work is a bit reminiscent of the Cure.Driven Out by The FixxRob brings us British new wave band The Fixx in a work off their fifth album.  It talks about the pillaging of the land driven by greed.  "I'm cooking with microwaves to warm up food not seen the soil - plugged into my TV, used to the lies their telling me."  It hit number 55 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number 1 on the mainstream rock charts.Funky Cold Medina by Tone Loc Wayne's staff pick was everywhere in 1989.  A funky cold medina was an aphrodisiac, and its use would get the singer into all kinds of trouble when he gives it to his dog, or to a girl who turns out to be a transvestite.  It peaked at number 3 on the charts, and if the main beat sounds familiar, it may be because it comes from "Hot Blooded" by Foreigner. Two Hearts by Phil CollinsJohn features a song Collins sang for his poorly received film "Buster."  Lamont Dozier of Motown fame wrote this song, and it was Dozier's 14th and last number 1 song.  It is about two people connected through time and space even when they are not together.   NOVELTYTRACK:Let's Put the X in Sex by KissEven rock legends put out a failure from time to time.  This could be considered one of those - you be the judge!

Author Grady Hendrix dropped in on The Record Player for what became one of our favorite chats to date. Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye: A Tribute to Roky Erickson is the album that Grady brought along to discuss with Jeff and Matt.Released in 1990, Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye features an all-star cast including R.E.M., the Jesus and Mary Chain, Poi Dog Pondering, John Wesley Harding, Julian Cope, ZZ Top, Bongwater, Butthole Surfers and many others. They all pooled their musical talents in support of Austin singer-songwriter Roky Erickson (13th Floor Elevators) who was dealing with hard times. The album helped to spark a renaissance for his career, with Erickson eventually making his return to recording and playing live. Producer Bill Bentley revisited his experiences of working on Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye in a 2017 article celebrating a vinyl release of the compilation. He went on to mount a second tribute to Erickson which was released on Light in the Attic in 2021.About Grady:Grady Hendrix used to be a journalist, which means that he was completely irrelevant and could be killed and turned into food at any time. He is one of the founders of the New York Asian Film Festival, but he is not responsible for the bad parts of it. For years he was a regular film critic for the New York Sun but then it went out of business. He has written for Playboy Magazine, Slate, The Village Voice, the New York Post, Film Comment, and Variety. He has a hard time making up his mind.He is very, very beautiful, but if you ever meet him, please do not let this make you uncomfortable. He does not judge. The New Yorker once ran a short profile of him, and this means that when the time comes and they are lining people up for the Space Arks he will be guaranteed a seat ahead of you.Okay, so you can read everything in full at Grady's website. He's a funny guy. A number of his books have been optioned for movies and television, including My Best Friend's Exorcism, which you can now watch on Amazon Prime and he's got a new book coming in early 2023, which we discuss briefly in our conversation. The Record Player:Please rate and review our podcast wherever you might be listening. While the reviews and What Now items educate us about peace signs and future druid Julian Cope, it's two real Italians and a fake one who get the most attention. Peter DeLuise returns in a What Now blurb about a bad Valentine's Day; Alyssa Milano succeeds in convincing Catherine that she is not "stupid" (that's Catherine's word, not ours!); and One To Watch notches another win with future Friends star Matt LeBlanc back when he was only associated with Fruitful Bran. Don't watch Twins -- or do; we couldn't reach consensus -- and join us for our February 1989 pop culture episode!QUICK LINKS

Chris Olley of six by seven was kind enough to take a break from writing to join us on the podcast. We jump right into it with how difficult it is for artists to remain true to themselves. Chris also discusses how he transformed from a guitar shredder to a Neil Young disciple. His band, six by seven, was the band that should have broken here in the US but didn't. Chris posits that it could be the band's penchant for terrible timing. He also schools me on Cher's Do You Believe, discusses his bizarre working relationship with Julian Cope, and how long it takes him to get sacked from any given job. He also breaks down why people believe he's a prolific songwriter. I'd recommend following his social media, but he doesn't have any. Check the band out at Bandcamp. There's a lot there! Check us out on the socials @PerformanceAnx. You can treat us to coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Merch is found at performanceanx.threadless.com. Let's not waste any time and get right into it with Chris Olley of six by seven on Performance Anxiety on the Pantheon Podcast Network.

In this episode, Barney, Mark & Jasper invite legendary A&R man David Bates to tell them about his long & distinguished career in music — particularly the years he spent working at Phonogram with the likes of Tears For Fears, Def Leppard & Robert Plant.David reminisces about hearing the Beatles on the radio in 1962, and how that took him eventually to DJ'ing & to working at Richard Branson's first Virgin megastore in the '70s. A clip from our 1990 Was (Not Was) audio interview prompts recall of the droll duo & of David Geffen, after which our guest talks about the "torturous" process of overseeing Tears For Fears' eye-wateringly expensive Seeds Of Love album. He also recalls reuniting Robert Plant with Led Zep bandmate Jimmy Page for 1994's live No Quarter album. From there we segue into the week's new audio interview, which features Julian Cope — frontman with David's first major Phonogram signing the Teardrop Explodes — talking to a roomful of French music journalists about 1991's Peggy Suicide album. Two clips from this highly entertaining press conference prompt memories of the inimitable "Saint Julian" from our guest, who also joins in with the RBP team's tribute to ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill, God rest his beard.Mark concludes the episode with quotes from his favourite library additions over the past fortnight, including pieces about Joe South and Earth, Wind & Fire, and Barney & Jasper respond with remarks on interviews with Seth Lakeman and Christina Aguilera. Many thanks to special guest David Bates; find his playlists at dbfinestkind.com.Pieces discussed: David Bates on life as an A&R man, Was (Not Was) audio, Tears for Fears' Seeds of Love, Julian Cope, Julian Cope audio, John Sinclair, Dusty Hill, Record shops and Hammond B3s, Earth, Wind and Fire, Jerry Lee Lewis, Joe South, Television, Chuck E. Formed 1978, Liverpool's Echo and the Bunnymen evolved into one of post-punk's most legendary and successful units, going from skeletal, drum-machine inflected beginnings to an expansive, colorful neo-psychedelic presence on record and stage, becoming critical faves with such LPs as Crocodiles, Heaven Up Here, Porcupine, Ocean Rain. The powerful rhythmic section of Les Pattinson and the late Pete De Freitas propelled the lofty poetic lyricisms of singer Ian McCulloch, but guitarist Will Sergeant, the defacto music director of the band, was a creative innovator of the highest order as the band progressed and toured around the world. In tune with both 60's psych/garage roots and forward-thinking freeform guitar style, his sounds both added subtle texture and eruptive passages, and a look at some key live tracks on the show today from mainly 1981-85 illustrates some moments of the Bunnymen's higher ruling. Super excited to have Will visit the show today to talk some history as well as his brand new forthcoming memoir Bunnyman, out in the states next month. It focuses on Will's formative years in post-war Liverpool, his musical DNA and the path to their eventual big break with Sire after establishing themselves on the Eric's club scene with kindred spirits like Julian Cope's Teardrop Explodes. Huge thanks to Will for coming by! As well as thanks to Kelley Stoltz and the folks at Third Man for helping get us together! Archives of other shows: www.brianturnershow.com.
