Life of the Record
The Making of SET YOURSELF ON FIRE by Stars - feat. Torquil Campbell, Amy Millan, Evan Cranley...

Life of the Record

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 10, 2025 126:14

For the 20th anniversary of Stars' breakthrough third album, Set Yourself on Fire, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After Torquil Campbell and Chris Seligman grew up together in Toronto, they formed Stars when they were living in New York City. Their first album, Nightsongs, was made with the help of their friends in Metric and several guest singers, including Amy Millan. Deciding to relocate to Montreal, they added Amy Millan and Evan Cranley as full-time members. Their second album, Heart, was released in 2003 by Paper Bag Records and the new label Arts & Crafts, which was co-founded by their friend Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene. For their ambitious third record, they brought in drummer Pat McGee and producer Tom McFall. Set Yourself on Fire was eventually released in 2004. In this episode, Torquil Campbell discusses the early days of the band as an outlier in the New York City rock scene and how they found their people when they moved to Montreal. He describes his vision of having both male and female vocalists and how when Amy Millan joined, they could start telling stories from two different sides. Amy Millan discusses her initial reluctance to join the band, but how she was able to cement her place as co-lead singer and develop her songwriting voice. She also describes the alchemy of the relationships in Stars and how despite some romantic turmoil within the band around the time of this album, they've remained deeply connected to one another decades later. Evan Cranley talks about his musical partnership with Chris Seligman and how the two of them were able to collaborate to develop song structures in an orchestral pop style. Chris Seligman describes how his background in classical music, his love of string arrangements and his perfectionist tendencies impacted the music they made together. From the vibrant Montreal music scene of the early 2000s to an encounter with a stranger in a bar that led to a house where the songs were written to connecting with Tom McFall in London to a big fight in North Hatley to a mad dash to finish string arrangements at that last minute to personal lyrics about love, death and the band itself, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.

[00:00:33] Sam Wilson: Paul Neal is a serial entrepreneur. That's owned six businesses in 30 years. He uses that wealth of real-world experience to help entrepreneurs and real estate investors win by funding their growth and dreams. Paul, welcome to the show.  [00:00:45] Paul Neal: Hey, thanks, Sam. Happy to be here, man.  [00:00:47] Sam Wilson: Hey, the pleasure's mine. Paul, there are three questions. I ask every guest who comes on the show: in 90 seconds or less, can you tell me, where did you start? Where are you now? And how did you get there?  [00:00:56] Paul Neal: It all started when I was in college. I got in my first business, approached by my brother-in-law who's in marketing and thought, wow, I was studying engineering and didn't like it. He said, come work with me. We partnered up and had a really successful 10-year ride with that. And how I got here now was just a series. It's really, definitely not a straight line. Multiple businesses, I had some really successful ones. I had some, some massive failures and you know, I find myself kind of back where I've always loved to be, and that is in real estate and business finance.  [00:01:24] Sam Wilson: Wow. Okay. There's a lot, a lot to unpack there. A 10-year run. You guys launched a business that's, I mean, a 10-year, run's a pretty strong run for something that's like, Hey, will you come work with me? What was that business?  [00:01:34] Paul Neal: Yeah, actually, honestly, that was a network marketing business. And so that was really my first exposure to entrepreneurship. I had always been sort of conditioned to be an engineer. Just naturally pretty good at math and science. My father was an engineer. And I worked in the field a little bit when I was in school, through co-op and I just, I sat in an eight by eight, fluorescent lighted office eight hours a day. And I remember the arguing with people for about three hours over the little rubber booties on the product we were developing and thought at that point, I'm either going to slit my throat or do something else. And so he knew, we had a good relationship and he knew that I wanted something bigger and, he and my sister had been successful. And I thought, well, okay, I'll, do something different with them.  [00:02:18] Sam Wilson: Network marketing gets a really bad rap. And people see that, they hear it, they're like, oh my gosh. But I think there's some valuable things probably that people learn when they go into network marketing. Would you agree with that? And if so, what were those things?  [00:02:32] Paul Neal: Oh, undoubtedly. So yeah, I mean, I think the big takeaways are you have to have a vision and a dream of where you want to go. You have to face down your fears every day and just kind of put yourself out there because you know, rejection is the name of the game, right? You know, it's 99 to one. And so you get really a thick skin and I will say this, well, and another lesson, actually, my wife and I got to learn to work together, which was great. We've now just celebrated 31 years of marriage. So we survived that experience, you know, but it was all about failing forward and, you know, and the encouragement we got from the leadership over the years really inspired us to get, you know, to become better and stronger. And so that helped us in the, what I call the real world of business after the fact.  [00:03:16] Sam Wilson: Yeah, absolutely. That's cool. That's cool. Today you are back in real estate business finance. I want to spend probably the bulk of our time, if you don't mind, really talking about where you see us economically in a cycle, how you're positioning yourself, and kind of where you're seeing opportunity, and what people should be doing. I know it's a lot of things to unpack so maybe we'll just start, you know, where are we right now in your view, Paul? [00:03:41] Paul Neal: Yeah. So, great question, Sam. So, you know, we've had a hot run and obviously, in residential real estate, the economy's expanded quite a bit. There's been, you know, lots of evidence of inflation and talks of inflation. And, you know, there's a lot of reasons for that. A lot of its supply shock and you know, and how demand has shifted from products, goods, and services when people were locked in their homes and ordering everything from Amazon to now service shock, where people have gotten more than they need from Amazon and so now they want to go back out to restaurants and bars. They want to travel. As experience, I just got back from Florida, took me an extra day to get home from Florida to Virginia because they're short-staffed everywhere with the airlines because people are just traveling a mass among other reasons. And so, you know, the fed is aggressively moving to try to put the brakes on inflation. You know, they've bumped the prime rate 75 basis points twice. They'll probably do it again, come September. And you know, most people think that's a bad thing. The news talks about, the media talks about the fed hit and the prime rate rates are going up. The world's going to end. The reality is as they do that, they're attempting to put up the brakes on inflation. We're starting to see that ease. And I think we're going to see it ease quite a bit into the fourth quarter. And so the long end of the yield curve starts to come down so longer interest rates start to ease. We saw an increase on the 10-year note. It went from right at about 1% in December, peaked in June, right before the fed hit the gas pedal the first time. And it had peaked at like 3.5%. Well, it's since retraced all the way down to, it's battling right around 2.7 now. So, you know, people talk about the converted yield curve and so forth. So that's a signal that we're moving to recession. I will tell you this though. The other interesting thing is normally when we go into recession, you see a major upturn in unemployment. We have not seen that. And you know, there's a lot of, you know, people scratching their head, you know, from COVID taking a lot of the upper-end workers that could retire out of the workforce early that didn't come back to, I think, I heard the other day there maybe 3 million in that neighborhood, people who have perhaps have long COVID. And so they're not, you know, they're not coming back in the workforce either. So they were affected kind of adversely. So for whatever it is, we're not seeing unemployment really turn up sharply. So that's interesting, but. But I'll tell you this. I think really the key is to position yourself right now. That's what we're looking to do, you know, in the event of an economic slowdown because that always brings tremendous opportunity.  [00:06:12] Sam Wilson: When you say that, what comes to mind? Like, what are some action items? If you said to me, Hey, Sam, today here are three things or two things, whatever comes to mind, that you should be doing right now to position yourself.  [00:06:22] Paul Neal: Yeah, man. Absolutely. I'll keep it really simple. I think three things. The first thing would be, Hey, 80- 20 your expenses. You know, we talk about 80-20 principle, Pareto's principle. 20% of your expenses you probably need and 80% of them are probably fluff.  I would say, you know, seriously, look at, and you can do this on the business side, on the personal side, take your credit card statements for the last 90 days and your statements where you have auto-debits come out. And look at all the charges coming out and try to ruthlessly defend them. Get with your accountant CPA or partner or spouse and say, you know, you defend them and make sure you really need these. I don't know about you, but you know, many times I end up signing up for some service that, you know, four months later, I forgot I signed up for and don't use, but they're tapping my credit card, right? So how many of those do we have, right?  [00:07:07] Sam Wilson: I don't know what you're talking about, Paul.  [00:07:08] Paul Neal: Yeah, no, it never happens, right? So, 80- 20, you know, and including, sort of out of the box. You know, maybe you need to look at your staff and do you have anybody that's low producing or not effective. Maybe now's the time to trim some fat. Or how about this? Maybe buy out a partner. If you're an entrepreneur or a business owner, maybe, you know, they're getting close to retirement, maybe they don't want to go through a recession, maybe this is a good opportunity, right? Second thing, I would say shore up that balance sheet. Look at your debt. You know, is there anywhere you can, I would say pay off, but my next point's going to sort of preclude that. I would say, you know, can you extend your terms anywhere? Can you consolidate, can you get better rates in terms of what you currently have? Do you have some assets on there that aren't performing that maybe you could turn into cash, maybe a property you could sell that's not performing like you'd like it to do? Or just some, I don't know, maybe you've got a car laying around that's not, you just don't really need. Turn it to cash. It's a great time to do that. Which brings me to my third point in that is really focus on cash. Get some dry powder, you know, opportunities are going to come. I think it was Warren Buffett who said be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful, right? So this is when most wealth is created, I believe, in a downturn, not in an upcycle. Things go on sale. Properties go on sale. Businesses go on sale. So from a cash standpoint, you know, get a line of credit if you need it. Look at your AR, accounts receivable. I see so many businesses that, you know, they take forever to get their money in the door. There's ways you can improve that, aggressive follow up, any deposits up front, maybe factoring. Different ways to do that, but really focus on cash for those opportunities that come up that will inevitably come to he who's ready for that.  [00:08:41] Sam Wilson: Yeah. I like that. I like that a lot. And I know people are going to laugh at me and say, well, gee, Sam, why didn't you do this a year and a half ago? But I've had no debt, even on my primary residence forever. And I'm like, I'm looking at it right now and I go, gosh, if I'm going to start stacking cash for an opportunity. So yeah, I'm looking at getting debt on my primary, which is one of those things it's kind of, you know, everybody's got their own view on what you should or shouldn't do in that respect, but it's one of those things just, in line with that, you know, stacking cash, on that comment though, if you're stacking cash, how do you protect that from the effects of inflation? I've got some business accounts and things myself that are, that have been, you know, it's idle and it's not a small sum of idle capital, but what do you recommend in that regard? So, Hey, we're stacking cash, but what do we do with it in the meantime?  [00:09:22] Paul Neal: Yeah. I mean, that's a good question. And I'll be the first to say, I'm not an expert there, but I would say that, you know, who is it that said, I forget, somebody famous said, I'm more concerned about the return of my investment and the return on my investment. And so I think in times of transition and turmoil, 'cause I think we're in that state right now, nobody really knows what's going to happen. Preservation of cash versus, you know, deployment of cash might be in the short term the more poignant question in my mind, I know it's a conservative approach. I tend there after having a business blow up in 2008, a business that was a multimillion-dollar business position to sell. And then liquidity went to zero. I had not expected that I knew we were going to have a slowdown. Didn't know. So you just don't know. And so again, I would say safe, liquid, and readily available and then reevaluate that in 90 days. You know, the world's going to look different in, I believe, October, November than it does today. And again, I think we'll have a little more sense of stability. We've got a midterm election coming up. There's a lot of things going on. So the plates, you know, it's going to look different at that point.  [00:10:26] Sam Wilson: What would you say to somebody maybe that isn't in that position where they can liquidate assets or they can shore up balance sheets or even go out, maybe even their expenses are pretty low? Let's say they're just getting started, right, and maybe maybe again, they don't have that capital to necessarily stack quickly. What do you say to that person right now? How can they position themselves to win in a recession?  [00:10:47] Paul Neal: I think obviously point number one of really seriously looking at your expenses. I think that you need to look at allocating some savings. I mean, you've got money coming in right now. I think that's critical to get in the habit of savings. And then I think you should really align yourself with people that are a few steps down the road ahead of you, that have been there. 'Cause we all started, well, I don't say we all started with nothing. I did. I didn't inherit any money, you know, I wasn't fortunate enough to have a famous last. So, if you're not in that camp, like, I wasn't then align yourself with people that are down the road ahead of you, or particularly in real estate investing, there are a lot of people you can follow. Obviously, Sam, is a great one, and learn from them. And then you can start looking at building and assembling a team. You know, really the key is the idea, not the capital. If you can come up with the ideas and you will, if you immerse yourself with the right people, then the capital will show up. You will have opportunities. It may not be to, you know, to buy a 30-unit apartment building day one. But you know, not everybody starts there.  [00:11:47] Sam Wilson: Absolutely. Let's talk about that for a minute. What are you, you said today you are involved in real estate, in business finance, where are you seeing opportunity right now in real estate? [00:11:56] Paul Neal: Yeah, we see a lot of new construction on the investor side. We have quite a few builders that we finance and their, you know, inventory is super low on the residential side. Depending on where you are in the country, I mean, if you're in a, you know, New York City or California, you're probably not going to have to high demand, but if you're in the Southeast or where people want to move to, there's a lot of demand and there's just not a lot of supply. And that's not going to slow down. I mean, you have 40% of the mortgages in residential real estate are below 3%. So people in those homes aren't going to sell, that inventory's not coming on the market, unless they're just forced to move. You have a large percentage of 'em are actually paid off. You have this big, the largest cadre of a demographic population coming into the I'm now ready to buy a home for the first time, the millennials that, you know, they want to move out of the apartment. You know, a lot of 'em are working hybrid work schedules, so they want some more room. They're moving out of the cities, they want homes and they just aren't out there. So I mean, I think single-family, if you can get that is great just from the demand. I have a lot of entrepreneurs because I find a lot of real estate investors are also business owners, entrepreneurs, and professionals, doctors, veterinarians, that sort of thing. Those that haven't are looking to buy the buildings they're in the buildings aren't cheap, but you know, what a great investment there from a commercial standpoint. They lease out part of the building, helps defer some of the costs. There's a lot of tax advantages there. I have a client, good friend of mine. She's an OB-GYN. She had a practice, bought her building about 13 years ago. Anyways, looking to retire in the next couple of years, has paid the building off. She was just recently acquired by one of these larger medical groups and they're not only paying her to buy the business, they're paying her a salary for a few more years, but they're going to rent the building back for her for $9,000 to $10,000 a month of cash flow for just, what a retirement cash flow, right?  [00:13:41] Sam Wilson: That's amazing. Absolutely love that. Yeah. It's stuff like that that makes a lot of sense. Let's talk about business finance. What are some things you're involved in right now, I guess, on the business finance, if you don't mind talking about that?  [00:13:53] Paul Neal: Yeah, sure. [00:13:53] Sam Wilson: Finance side of things that you say, Hey, these are unique areas where I see opportunity. And I guess specifically inside of that, what type of businesses do you see that are, I guess, inflation and recession-resistant?  [00:14:05] Paul Neal: Well, I think service businesses are inflation and recession-resistant. I mean, you know, you've got to have your, well, you look at lawn care for instance, you know, but any business where it demands a, you know, someone to come do something for you, those are in high demand. They're always in demand, right? You can't Amazon those, right? You can't shut that out of, you know, or offshore that. That's always a safe investment. We see a lot right now, we do a lot of business acquisition funding and we see a lot of partner buyouts. You have a lot of businesses that are well established, that the principles are aging out. They've done it. They've been there done that. They've got the t-shirt and they're, like, they want to sell. And a lot of times it's to maybe a junior, it's a family member, or someone in the company. But not always, there's a lot of turnovers. I mean, all these baby boomers are looking to retire, so I think that's a great opportunity. I have a young client. He's probably not 30 yet. And he's in the gourmet popcorn business. And so yeah, I know it's kind of funny, right, but he had, he has a very successful gourmet popcorn, retail establishment. And he's acquiring other established, that's his business plan. So as he adds additional popcorn businesses to his portfolio, he's growing his cash flow and his balance sheet. And he's been really successful at that. So there's a lot of opportunity out there.  [00:15:20] Sam Wilson: What are risks, I guess, that you are actively avoiding when you look at business acquisition, if somebody comes to you and they're looking for acquisition funding, what are some things that are just red flags that you go thanks for the call, but no? [00:15:34] Paul Neal: Yeah. So, startups. We don't do startup startups are usually risky. We want to see businesses that are cash flowing well. We want to see, you know, if you want to buy a business, we want to see that you have the ability to manage and grow the business. So some sort of experience, it doesn't have to be necessarily directly in that business, but you know, you have to have some relevant management business experience that can, you know, transfer over. Because the last thing we want for you or for us is for you to acquire the business and then, you know, to fail, you know, a year to two years later, 'cause you just didn't know what you were getting into. We try to stay out of the sort of risky industries, you know, your vice industries, things like that. Although they could be hugely profitable, just not our area. But you'd be amazed at the calls we get. So yeah, so I would say really it's basically cash flow is the key things, what's the history of the business, and if you're doing the acquiring, do you have experience? And a lot of times it's a business that's already in that field and they're just expanding their operations through little mergers and acquisitions, picking up a $2 million, you know, branch here, a million dollar branch over here, that sort of thing. And that again can be a super effective way to grow, particularly in a recession when, you know, you also may have a competitor that may not be as systematically effective as you, doesn't have the systems and the processes, and you've kind of nailed it and you can acquire them and turn that around. So their cash flow may not have to be as strong if you have the demonstrated ability to do that. [00:17:00] Sam Wilson: Right, right. No, that's absolutely true. I love that idea of expansion in a time of recession or when everybody else is contracting, I think that's a great time to go out and take market share. And I think that's really, really great there. Tell me this. If you rewind the tape, you look back at your last 20 or 30-year career, what is one thing that you feel like you've done very well that other people should emulate? And what is one thing maybe you'd say, Hey, here's a pitfall that somebody can avoid? [00:17:27] Paul Neal: That's a great question. I think, I don't know. I think doing well, I try to make long-term choices. Like, my wife is a long-term choice for instance and I chose well there. I don't know how that happened. God was good to me, you know? And whenever I've approached a business, I've always tried to go along with it and look beyond, you know, day one and have always been willing to put money in, even when I didn't have it, realizing that, you know, I couldn't do everything myself. The bad decisions are the times where I felt like I could do it all myself and, you know, to be the Jack of all trades and then the master of none. And so the guy who's building the business is also cutting the grass, so to speak. And that just, it didn't work. And it was because, you know, I thought, well, A, I can do it and B, you know, we can save a few bucks on the ramp up or whatever. And you know, inevitably it was just a bad decision. It would cost me time and ultimately a lot of money. [00:18:26] Sam Wilson: Right. Yeah. It's the time to market. It's the ramp-up speed. It's getting in your own way. It's the, you know, you're the bottleneck. And I think many of us, myself included him constantly reviewing things like that where it's like, why am I, this is, I am in my own way right here.  [00:18:41] Paul Neal: Totally. Yeah. Well, that brings me to another point, you know. It's like, so I've had a business coach on and off, but mostly on for the last 20 years. And I'm actually a certified business coach. I went through the process and had a few clients, really just to sharpen my own ax. I don't actively do it today, but we all need somebody who can look over our shoulder and say, you know, ask that question, like, Hey, you know, why are you doing that? You know, so defend that for me. You know, and I'm like, I really can't defend that for you, you know?  [00:19:12] Sam Wilson: Right, right. And that goes back to your credit card statement, defending those expenses where it's like, oh, whatever it is like, okay, yeah. I probably can't. So maybe you should cut it out.  [00:19:22] Paul Neal: Right, right. Probably don't need it. Yeah. [00:19:24] Sam Wilson: Probably don't need it, man. That's awesome. Paul, thank you for taking the time to come on the show today and really just kind of give us your history of business, how to position ourselves to win in a time of recession, kind of your thoughts here on the market. You've given us three very easy-to-follow steps on things that we should be doing right now to be ready for a downturn and how to, increase our market share in a time of recession. Certainly appreciate your insights on where you're seeing opportunity in the real estate space and also in the business side of things. It was great having you on the show today. If our listeners want to get in touch with you or learn more about you, what is the best way to do that? [00:19:56] Paul Neal: Yeah. Thanks, Sam. So I've set up a free resource. I've put together the key questions that you've got to ask and answer before you seek funding. I think this is a really awesome guidebook to kind of help you think through the process, to make sure that you really have to ask a lot of questions. Are you clearing your emotional and energetic fields? What do you do when you get "gooped" by the world, a person, the news, the physical and virtual environments you find yourself in, or even by your own emotional triggers? "Gooped" is my partner Noah and my term for what happens to us when we get emotionally, mentally, energetically, and physically weighed down, swirled up, affected by external forces.  In the times we live in, it's really wise to ask yourself : What am I doing to keep my energy clear?  Are my energetic and emotional boundaries strong? How do I know when they are weak? And how do I strengthen them? Today, in part 3 of our 3 parts series called STAY LIGHT - how do we keep our life force strong, our minds clear, our emotions stable, our radiance bright in our current reality - individually and collectively - I invited in the person who often supports me to "de-goop"- my partner in life, love, business and service, Noah Martin. The centerpoint of our exploration today is this: "What does it mean to be gooped? How do you know you are gooped up? How does it happen? And what do you do in the moment or as prevention to keep the external forces from knocking you off kilter?" Clearing your emotional and energetic fields is a must in our world today. Just like you brush your teeth and get in your steps. Or you get too much plaque and too much fat, which creates dis-ease. Our exploration will take part in four sections: 1. Wisdom About Energy - What we need to know about our energetic connections and energy fields - and how they interact with other people and situations. 2. 5 Kinds of Boundaries - Emotional, Mental, Energetic, Physical and Environment. How to work with yours, know when your boundaries have been breached and how to re-find your center and clear your field. 3. Goop Prevention - what you can do proactively to not get gooped.  4. Emergency Care & Culitivating Your Energetic Support Team and Structure - practices & modalities that can support you to clear your being , strenghten your internal system, and clear out energetic and emotional interference.   Get your practitioners, practices and people in place that keep you at a high frequency and keep your being light. Get these into your rhythm to support your radiance.  Tune in. We look forward to diving in with you. Stay Light! De-goop daily, weekly and monthly :)  With great heart, Christine and Noah p.s. “The Night Economy” Over the course of their brilliant career, which got started around 1999, Stars have put out nine winning and magical albums including Set Yourself on Fire and the Polaris-Prize nominated efforts In Our Bedroom After The War and The Five Ghosts. Their last full-length effort was 2017’s There Is No Love In Fluorescent Light, and I know that was four years ago, but don’t worry—new music is coming. Stars play a ravishing blend of jangly chamber pop, breezy new wave and melancholic indie rock. They fall somewhere between Prefab Sprout and Broken Social Scene and their songs are thoughtful, quirky, moving, inspiring and wrenching in all the right ways. They can evoke the bittersweet memories of the past and they can conjure the hope and optimism of the future. They’ve played Coachella and the WAYHOME festival in Toronto and their music has appeared in "Gossip Girl," "One Tree Hill," "The Vampire Diaries,” “Skins" and "Warehouse 13." The British-born Torquil Campbell is a musician, an actor on stage and film, a playwright and the host of a weekly podcast called The Soft Bulletin. Aside from his work in Stars, Campbell also put out albums with Memphis and he has a a solo project under the name Dead Child Star. In this conversation, which happens to take place on Campbell’s birthday, a lot of ground is covered: the resuscitation of the night economy, staying afloat financially as an artist during COVID, a mutual love of The Chills and why buying an album is still one of the best deals around.

Good Morning Veterans, Family, and Friends, welcome back to the SEVENTH EPISODE of the Veteran Doctor. On this week's podcast, we will discuss How to make your New Year’s Resolutions Stick. We will also continue our fun facts of UBI (Useful Bits of Information) and Veteran News, so stick around for so great stuff to come. As January begins, people whisper about their "resolutions." Have you ever followed through with these or even taken the time to write them down? This year is the time to make your resolutions count. Sit down and create your schedule for a New You in the New Year. The biggest challenge to making your 2021 resolutions stick is creating practical ones, to begin with. If you're like the rest of America and eat out four times per week, then you may have a goal to save money and your waistline by kicking the fast-food restaurants to the curb. Instead of making bold statements such as, "I will not eat fast food for 2021," opt for "I will eat fast food no more than once every two weeks." As you achieve this goal, and it seems to become easier to avoid the golden arches, you can then refine your resolution to "I will eat fast food no more than once a month" And so on. When you decide to commit and write down your New You Resolutions this year, consider these helpful tips: Write it Down Avoid committing it to memory. Instead, write it out with pride and post it to remind you of the goals you have set. Put a Number to it Decide how many times a day, week, or month you can do something and shun away from saying "every day." Life happens, and you don't want "every day" to be the cause of you throwing in the towel altogether on your goals. Keep it Realistic Although the idea of losing 10 lbs in a week sounds excellent on infomercials, it's neither realistic nor healthy. Weight loss goals should be based on losing 1 - 2 lbs per week. If you want to lose it and keep it off, then choose to keep your goals real. Enlist Help From Others This is the time to call your best friend and convince him or her to make a resolution with you. Use each other for the purpose of accountability. Call up your most energetic and motivated friends and have a Resolution Party. Seek out the Advice of an Expert If it's exercise goals, seek out a certified Exercise Physiologist, nutrition - meet with a Registered Dietitian, and if it's to organize your life - hire a Personal Organizer or Maid. Set Yourself up for Success Think positively when you set your goals. People have greater success adding to their daily life than taking away. Try this, "I will eat at least one cup of berries three times each week." When you add in fruit and vegetables, you often have less room for chips and dip. Don't Forget to Follow-up When you write down your goals, take the time to write down follow-up dates in your calendar. For weekly goals, check on yourself every three months, and for monthly goals, check on yourself in six months. Last, but not Least, Remember to Reward Treat yourself to a massage, a facial, or a new outfit when your resolution has been met, and your goal has become a habit. New Year's Resolutions are a way for us to touch base with ourselves and look for ways to make improvements. Don't stress over them. Instead, make them positive, make them real, and make them stick. Here's to You in the New Year.

Life After Covid-19 - How to Set Yourself Up for Success in the Last Half of the Year

So many small business owners are struggling now, and that’s certainly true for real estate investors. It’s almost as if they are frozen in time.  Do I buy, or do I wait?  There is no easy answer.  Today I have put together a few tips on how to set yourself up for success in the last half of this year. You may be wondering exactly how do you get back on track after Covid-19 (or any other life event for that matter) that derails the goals and the plan you laid out for your business at the beginning of the year?  I mean, who could have predicted we would be in this situation on January 1st of this year?  If you are struggling, if you’ve lost your focus, or you just need someone to point you in the right direction, you’re in the right place. We All Crave Success It’s human nature for us to want to be successful at everything we do in business and in life.  Even though you may have some setbacks along the way, if you prepare yourself for the road ahead and really visualize what you want to accomplish, then the only person standing in your way of success is you.  Ultimately, it’s up to you to set yourself up for success. Know this; there’s no magic potion or secret formula for success. Even business-people or celebrities who seem to be overnight sensations worked hard for many years before reaching their level of success. The goals you set and the processes you put in place to make those goals a reality are two very big parts of this puzzle, but first, you have to get started.  Work through the process, pivot along the way as needed, and you WILL set yourself up for success both in business and in life. Getting Started It’s almost certain that business as we knew it before Covid-19 has changed dramatically for a lot of folks.  People are working from home that has never done that before.  Simple things we used to take for granted like strolling through the office supply store or looking at occupied properties haven’t been possible in many cases. A lot of investors are struggling when it comes to their business. However, there are also a lot of people that are doing better than ever. They pivoted, they made changes in the face of uncertainty and started to do things differently and that has made a huge difference for them.   I have put together 3 steps for setting yourself up for success in your business in the last half of this year. Step 1. Create New Goals Even though you may be thinking, “I already did this a few months ago and it sounds like a lot of work”, you need to ask yourself how you “intend” to finish out the last half of this year.  Creating these new goals takes you off the hook for your original goals. Now, make no mistake, I’m not saying to completely abandon the original goals you set for this year. I’m just saying that rather than living in this state of overwhelm, you may need a new plan that puts you back on track so that you can accomplish your original goals or pivot and make changes as needed. Once your big goals are broken down into smaller goals, they’re not so overwhelming. This may mean putting together a plan to achieve your goals in a shorter period of time.  If that’s the case, maybe your need to increase your marketing so you can bring in more leads in your real estate investing business. Or it could mean that you need to simply set more realistic yet attainable goals for the last half of the year. At the end of the day, this is something only you can decide. The 12 Week Year If you’ve been around me for any length of time, you’ll know I love the book “The 12 Week Year” by Brian Moran. The premise of this book is that by taking your big goals and breaking them down into 12-week segments, they will be less overwhelming and easier to accomplish.  (I’ll put a link at the bottom of this article so you can check out my original book review). Instead of looking at those giant goals, you made like “double the number of deals I did last year” or “double the amount of net income in my business in the next 12 months”, break that big goal down into something smaller that is easier to accomplish.  For example, if your goal was to do 12 deals this year, how many deals would that normally be in each 12 week period?  The answer is of course 3 deals. Since we have less time left in this year, ask yourself this; how many deals do I need to do in each of these remaining 2 quarters to catch up?  Next, what do I need to accomplish each month?  Break the tasks down so that you know what you need to do each week to meet your goals.  Your small goals should guide you toward your next action steps so that you ultimately reach your big goals. Step 2. Decide Who You Need to Become This is a big one. Much like identifying your ideal client which in your case would be the group of motivated sellers you target in your business, put into words the type of person YOU want to become. Even better, who is the person you need to become to accomplish your big goals? Once you have that answer then identify what that type of person does differently than you. For instance, let’s say that you want to run a multiple 6 or 7 figure real estates investing business. What are some habits and behaviors that other investors that have built those businesses have? Do they get up earlier?  Do they have a morning routine that they are committed to? How did they get to be the CEO of their business?  If your goal is to build this same business, you need to think and act like them. You certainly don’t need to copy exactly what these people are doing, but you’ll need to add some behaviors and habits to your routine that put you on the path to becoming that person. These people definitely have different habits and behaviors than other people. Step 3. Create Processes to Set Yourself up for Success The processes you create to reach your goals are much more important than the actual goal itself when it comes to accomplishing the goals. While the goal keeps you focused on a direction, the process is all the action necessary to achieve that goal. I want you to take a look at your business as it is today.  What processes do you have in place today that will help you move closer to your goals? If you’re like most small business people, creating processes are often an afterthought rather than something you do proactively.  Processes are one way to make your life easier and they help you set yourself up for success at the same time. Be Mindful of How You Spend Your Time You must know how you’re spending the hours in your day before you can make changes. In the beginning, you might consider following a checklist for your daily tasks with a time limit for each task. This will help you get your focus back. For instance, start with a morning routine. Those are the steps you take to start your day each day.  This morning routine will look different for everyone.  I’m a big fan of Hal Elrod’s book “The Miracle Morning”, but I know myself and I’m not getting up at 4:00 am each day. Figure out what your morning ritual or routine looks like and commit to starting each day the same way.  We’re creating habits here.  Once you figure out a productive way to start your morning, managing the rest of your day will get easier.  Focus on one thing at a time. What do You Need to Stop Doing to Set Yourself up for Success? Maybe you need to ask yourself this question before moving on. What do you need to STOP doing?  Maybe that is turning on the news the first thing in the morning to listen to as you get ready for your day.  Let’s be honest; how many times have you stopped for just a minute to watch something on the news and realized that the one minute segment turns into 30 minutes in front of the TV? Maybe it’s something like checking email the first thing in the morning that derails your entire morning.  Instead of checking email the first thing in the morning, allow yourself 10–15 minutes to check and respond to emails at a set time of the day, then sign out of email for a few hours. Time blocking works really well when you need to focus on one task or one client for a certain amount of time. One example is to set aside time to tackle your marketing.  Next, set aside time for the next thing that really needs to get done. Remember, you’re trying to get your focus back and get your business back on track. Some people like short bursts of work, but I much prefer 90 minutes to 2 hours of focused time on a big project before I take a break. Someone once said that once a task is interrupted, it can take up to 40 minutes to get back on track.  Interruptions have a huge impact on your productivity.  The point here is to figure out something realistic that will work for you. Set a timer then get to work.  Refine Your Processes If you feel like your processes aren’t working, focus on improving the processes instead of changing the goals. Maybe you need to add or subtract a step or two or add more time to complete certain tasks. Your goal can be static, but your processes are meant to be more fluid and open to change. Every single living, breathing person has the opportunity to create the business of their dreams with these simple steps. I can guarantee you the road won’t always be easy and everyone will have a different timeline for reaching that success. It’s Covid-19 this year that has had a huge impact on our businesses; it will almost certainly be something different in the future. But with focused, hard work and a desire to succeed, you’ll soon recognize opportunities as they arise that will move you toward your ultimate goals. The Harsh Reality of Becoming a Christian They Didn’t teach In Sunday SchoolWhen we became a Christian we were misled to believe everything was going to be easy because God‘s in control. He’s got it covered. You’re going to be fine. Now don’t misquote me, God is ultimately in control of everything but until the second coming and God takes us all up to heaven where our lives are renewed, guess who else has power here?Satan became the prince of this world when he was cast out of heaven and he plummeted to earth with his demonic army of followers and will be the ruler of this domain for a time. There are many benefits of going to church and witnessing the Holy Spirit working in incredible ways, meeting people at the perfect time to bring them to Christ by confess their brokenness and longing for Jesus to enter their hearts as their personal savior. All of this is a victory for God’s KingdomWhat upsets me is the lack of equipping that comes afterwards you say, “I believe.”Churches will typically have a connection service that you opt into to learn more information. It’s a lot like most of us who graduated college and didn’t have a clear direction or job offer right out of school. You’ve received your “I Believe Diploma” but now what do you do?We waste time whether or not to get involved with something we may not feel called to or nothing really equates powerfully enough to the fire that has been lit in your heart when you decide to seek out God.The other option is to spend money on bible study programs being ran through the church but then you feel like your being sold on something that takes advantage of your situation to profit someone else. For those of you who have kids and had a birth in the hospital, remember when you had your baby(s) and they’ve clean them up, nurses came in to do the foot prints and give them their shots… you finally get your child placed back in your arms and what seems like only minutes after you receive your child for the first time… then they walk in.The “Newborn Photography” package salespeople. Lord, bless them. You can barely think straight and now you have to decide whether you want (2) 8x10 Portraits, (4) 4x6s and (8) wallet photos or do I want (1) 9x12 Landscape, (3) 8x10s…Becoming a Christian at Church feels a lot like this sometimes. I think it’s time we start moving away from getting butts in seats for our programs and spend more time equipping people for the reality of what lies ahead.People need to know the truth and not told that if they want to learn more they have to continue jumping over hurdles. I don’t believe Jesus talks laid out this type of introductory structure in the Bible so I don’t understand why contemporary churches have adopted this model over the years.Reality of a BelieversWhether you consider yourself more mature in your faith or a new believer, before you became a Christian who’s team are you on? Satan’s team. Do you understand what happens when you change sides in the midst of the battle?Does he sit around and say, “Well shoot, sorry fellas, looks like we lost another one to the good guys. I guess there is plenty more where that came from.” NO! You know what he says?! You’re a f***ing traitor! You sellout! I could’ve given you everything and anything you could’ve imagined in this world!Matthew 4:8-11“Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” 10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.” 11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.”You chose your God over all these incredible things so I am going to make it my life‘s mission to ruin you and I’m not going to stop I just you; I’m going to find everything that you love and everything that you care about and everyone that you hold close and I’m going to go after them!I’m going to find weakness you have an I’m going to exploit them, make you feel shame, I’m going to isolate you from everything. Nobody would every forgive you for what you’ve done! How could God possibly forgive you when He finds out what you’ve done.I’m going to attack them I’m going to make your life a living hell until you come back to me. You think this is over but we’re just getting started I’ll see you soon.Set Yourself up for successMatthew 10:16“Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.”Now throughout this course in this classroom and with these team member sitting next to you, we’re going to look at a wide variety of historical references, scripture, scripture commentaries, biblically based texts. The concepts and principles applied then can also be applied now and what is to come. The reason we do this is because we can safely identify evil and darkness through the stories of others. At times we will go to some dark places and we’re going to see how Satan works – how Satan maneuvers in these dark times in history. The reason we study this is because we have to understand that the enemy will stop at nothing to remove you from God‘s kingdom. And if he can’t have you he’ll take as many as he possibly can and he may not get you today he may not get you tomorrow but you know what it’s a war of attrition.Satan has been given a full-stop deadline of when Jesus comes again to throw anything at everything at us to break us. The only way to combat this is to stuy the tactics of the enemy and put our complete trust and faith in Jesus Christ. We believe with every part of our being that Jesus is the Lord of Heaven‘s armies. You will learn how to protect yourself and put up your defenses. You’ll begin developing an understanding of your strong points and your weak points because chances are Satan is going to attack he is going to seek out your weak points. “In boxing, they say it's the punch you don't see coming that knocks you out. In the wider world, the reality we ignore or deny is the one that weakens our most impassioned efforts toward improvement.” - Katherine Dunn, an American NovelistThe same can be said for our faith and walk with God in the fight against the darkness. Thankfully, we know how the story plays out in the end because God already gave us the end to the story. Until that day comes, though, it’s going to get bad -- it’s going to get real bad, and my fear is that the church has done a poor job equipping their congregations in preparation for what’s to come.

In this episode Angie recaps the Hartford Marathon in Connecticut -her 60th marathon and fastest to date. Plus, Trevor talks about his experience at the Kaisermarathon in Austria. And in the quick tip segment you will hear how to set yourself up for a marathon PR.Hartford Marathon Race Recap The 26th edition of the Hartford Marathon and Half Marathon was held on Saturday, October 12, 2019. This is a non-profit race and $7.5 million was raised for charity. This was my 47th state in my 50 State quest and my 60th marathon overall. My A goal going into this race was to break 3:30, my B goal was to PR (faster than the 3:35:41 set back at my 9th marathon in 2012), my C goal was to BQ (less than 3:40), and my D goal was to run my very best. I’ve been visualizing breaking 3:30 for the past several months and at the expo there was this board where you could write your goal. Although I felt a bit sheepish about it I wrote “break 3:30”. Based on how well my training had gone I knew I had it in me if all the necessary factors would come together on race day. Pre-Race: The expo was held at the XL Center in downtown Hartford and it was a nice mid-sized expo. I got my bib, my corral seeding sticker, race shirt and bag, and then walked around. Of course I had to stop by and say hi to Katie at the UCAN booth. Race Morning The starting line area is right by Bushnell Park, close to the State Capitol, the Bushnell Building and the State Library & Supreme Court. I found my way to B corral which was for runners who’d posted a sub-4:00 marathon and went to the very front where the 3:30 pace group was located. I kind of felt like a fraud being up there. But I knew if I wanted to attempt breaking 3:30 I needed to give myself every advantage. Even though I had a lot of nerves I kept telling myself that I was just excited and was prepared to give it my best. The weather was absolutely perfect for a marathon. It started out in the low 50’s and got up to low 60’s by the time I finished. It was mostly overcast with some wind. The Course The marathon and half marathon courses split pretty quickly which reduced congestion. They also had a marathon relay with several relay exchange points along the course and there was a 5k that had a different course. I’d heard that the half marathon course was more scenic but the marathon was quite nice too. We ran along the Connecticut River and near Riverside Park and Great River Park for a stretch. The half marathon had a time limit of 3 hours and the marathon time limit was 6 hours. There was an out and back section from mile 13 and the turn around just after mile 17. The course advertizes as having some rolling hills and the hills at mile 17 and mile 25 felt the most challenging. They seemed to have reliable pace groups out on the course. I started just in front of the 3:30 pace group and my goal was to stay in front of them for as long as possible and then hang on when they passed me. They caught up to me at mile 25 and after that I stayed right on the 3:30 pacer’s shoulder before passing them in the final stretch.Aid Stations There were frequent aid stations along the course stocked with water, Nuun energy drink, and some with gels. The race estimates that they serve 11,232 gel packs. 9,400 gallons of water was served at aid stations. The marathon works hard to make the event as environmentally friendly as possible. The 142,000 paper cups they use are fully compostable and 13,785 pounds of trash is diverted from landfills. 29,350 volunteer hours are donated to make the races possible. The volunteers that I interacted with were all helpful and encouraging. For my fueling I had a Generation UCAN bar with my breakfast about an hour before the race. Then I carried 2 UCAN bars and took them at intervals washed down with water from the aid stations. I also had some caffeinated chews that I used to boost my energy in the last few miles. Use the code MTAHARTFORD for 15% off your UCAN order. New customers use the code MTA25 for 25% off. The Finish The finish line is absolutely beautiful. The finish goes under the Veteran’s Memorial Arch and the street is lined with 500 autumn mum plants to decorate the final stretch. There are lots of cheering spectators in the last 0.2 miles making it extra exciting. This year there were 1,493 marathon finishers and 3,710 HM finishers. Viewing the finish line the day before the race. The post-race area is in Bushnell Park which has lovely walkways and an antique carousel. There was a ton going on post-race and a party atmosphere with a live band, beer garden, and great food area (choices included fruit cups, chips, granola, donuts, bananas, chocolate milk, bagels, and veggie rice bowls). They also gave out a reusable water bottle, heat sheet (they estimate seven thousand are given out), and an awesome medal which has the Capitol Building and Veteran’s Arch with a stained glass look behind it. The race shirt was long-sleeve in soft cotton and another perk was free race photos and finish line video. My Experience: I knew my training indicated that I could have a good marathon in Hartford if everything came together. Of course 10 days before the race I started feeling really fatigued and having symptoms that indicated I was coming down with a cold (taper troubles). I did everything I could think of to feel better and finally decided that it was fall allergies bothering me. I also knew that my period was scheduled to start on marathon day which is a wild card that many of us ladies have to deal with. There are some things you can control and others you just have to roll with.Gratitude and Courage Two core values that I’ve been thinking about lately are “gratitude and courage.” Each person will apply gratitude in different ways and each person will have individual ways that they can be courageous. I wanted to bring these two elements into the marathon with me. I felt good on race morning and was cautiously optimistic about a PR. The weather was looking perfect and I knew all I could do was to go out there and give it my best. Waking up on race morning I saw that Eliud Kipchoge ran 1:59:40 in Vienna to go sub-2:00 in the marathon and that was so inspiring. To see his smile and wise words about pursuing your dreams gave me more motivation to go out and do my best.Keep Pushing On my Race Ready ID (which I wear on my watch) I put the mantra “keep pushing” and that’s exactly what I did. I decided not to settle back and get comfortable on any mile but instead stay relaxed, stay grateful, and be courageous. I focused hard on keeping my self talk positive. If I was going up a hill I’d say something like “good thing you trained on hills” or “this hill is smaller than the one’s back home.” I specifically looked for beauty around me (which wasn’t hard considering the fall foliage in New England). If I felt my focus drifting I brought my attention back to the present and told myself to have courage. It looks slightly different to keep pushing depending on what mile you’re in because you don’t want to push your effort too hard in the early miles. And it gets significantly harder to keep pushing as the miles increase. I knew I’d have to keep my pace at 8:00 minute miles to break 3:30 so in the earlier miles I allowed myself to run a bit faster to make up for any later miles that might end up being slightly slower. But I didn’t obsess about my pace or splits and only looked at my watch to see my mile split when it buzzed. Breaking 3:30 At mile 23 I knew that if I held the pace and nothing went wrong I’d be able to break 3:30. The 3:30 pacer caught up with me just before mile 25 and I knew that I’d hang on with everything I had. The last mile felt tough with the final hill but I passed the pacer and was able to accelerate in the final stretch. I knew that I could finish strong and couldn’t wait to see the 3:29 on the clock. I also felt so grateful to be running my 60th marathon and be strong and healthy. When I crossed the finish line I felt emotional with gratitude. It was awesome to meet my goal of breaking 3:30 and set a PR. My last PR of 3:35:41 was set at my 9th marathon back in 2012. So this new PR of 6 minutes and 9 seconds was over 7 years in the making. As far as results go I was 256/1,111 overall, 59/384 females, and 6/74 in my age group. My official time was 3:29:32. I got to see Academy members Shira and her husband Chris along with Jo just after crossing the finish line. It was rather amusing that I was able to run strong the final stretch but when I started walking through the finisher’s area my body started seizing up. I got a foot cramp and it was hard to walk. Still, I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face.MTA Meet Up: Later that afternoon we had a small MTA meet up at the Hog River Brewery. This was where the Manchester Running Club was meeting as well. It was wonderful to meet Kaitlyn who was there with her family (she did the marathon relay), Jo from WI who did the HM, and Shira (and husband Chris) who did the HM. I also got to meet David who heads up the running club. How to set yourself up for a marathon PR1. Build a solid foundation Don’t rush the process. If you’re looking to PR make sure that you build a solid running base first and are injury free before ramping up your training. It’s important to focus on building a strong foundation first before demanding more out of your body. My recent marathon PR was built on the top of two solid marathon training cycles (London Marathon in April and the Charlevoix Marathon in June).2. Love the process. This really is another way to say “don’t forget the “boring” stuff”. Success in long distance running often comes down to what you do behind the scenes. This has been one huge key to how I’ve been able to run 60 marathons and make progress toward my time goals. This will include things like . . . Strength training. I started strength training regularly during a period of injury and strengthening my glutes (among other areas) has been key to keeping my hamstrings strong and healthy. Recovery. Elements like quality sleep, massage/foam rolling, meditation, not racing too frequently, and doing easy runs truly easy can all play a big role in helping you run healthy and strong. Nutrition. Fueling your body well is key to getting a lot out of yourself. Think of yourself as an athlete and feed yourself for performance. Yes, food is also meant to be enjoyed but there’s definitely a balance. This will also help you build muscle and lose fat if those are your goals. We all have our particular areas within the realm of fueling that need to be worked on. 3. Work on mindset. Your attitude and thought process can either make or break your PR goals. If we spend time thinking about why we can’t do something then it probably won’t happen. But if we think of all the ways we can make our goals happen they’re more likely to be achieved. Just like we spend time on physical training I’d encourage you to spend time on mental training. In some way spend time every day focusing on strengthening your mindset, finding good mantras, and meditating on and visualizing the results you want. If you don’t practice mindset it won’t magically come through for you when you need it most. For example, I meditate for 20 minutes every morning and at the end of my session I have a series of positive affirmations that I go through. Each person’s affirmations will be unique but three of mine are, “I am healthy, I am strong, I am a sub-3:30 marathoner.” It feels a bit weird at first to speak of your goals as if they’ve already happened but we must remember that goals start with belief, then become thoughts, and then are put into action.4. Enlist help and support. If you find yourself running into the proverbial wall over and over again with your goals it’s important to seek help. We often learn and grow best in a community and we all need support at times. The kind of support you need is going to vary from runner to runner. It may involve following through with a training plan (if you haven’t in the past), joining a local running group, finding a running partner who will challenge you, joining an online community, and getting a running coach. There’s no shame in needing help. Almost a year ago I started getting help from a nutrition coach at Metpro to deal with a stubborn weight gain. This was a turning point in my health and fitness and is one of the keys to where I am today with my running. Conclusion To be successful in reaching challenging goals like a BQ or PR in the marathon you have to fall in love with the process. If you’re only running to get faster there will be lots of discouraging runs and races where you’ll question everything. And of course there will come a point in every person’s running that you won’t get any faster. That’s just a result of aging. But if you fall in love with the process and start to enjoy the challenge of doing hard things then you’ll find joy in the journey and not just focus on the destination. You probably know where your weak areas are and what needs to be addressed for you to get better. And if you’re struggling with knowing what to do or how to do it consider hiring a coach. They can help you pinpoint problem areas and map a successful way forward. The only states remaining in my 50 State Marathon Goal are Vermont, New Hampshire, and Hawaii. Julia Dixon Evans is a writer based in San Diego, CA. I read Julia’s novel How to Set Yourself on Fire recently and was quite taken with her use of voice and the strong characterization of the story’s narrator, Sheila. In our conversation, Julia and I talked about her book, about experimenting with form as a writer, and about the question of likability. Then for the second segment we talked about trail running, and pushing yourself both physically and creatively. (Conversation recorded April 22, 2019.) Piano Parent Podcast: helping teachers, parents, and students get the most of their piano lessons.

In case you didn’t know, this podcast is called the Piano Parent Podcast. Most episodes deal with common obstacles or struggles students face when learning to play the piano. Today, I’d like to spend our time together by focusing on just you, parents. Specifically, today I want to encourage you to stand firm and do not give in. Listen to the full episode here Click here to download this episode. Remember the goal is to train your child Since my youngest is 16 and my parenting skills are a little dated, I decided to check out what others say about modern parenting. This article by Robert Locke from LIfehack.org had some interesting things to say about this topic. He says it is a mistake to give in to have a quiet life. Many parents give in because they have to juggle credit card, shopping, trolley and a screaming child. The only problem about giving in and hoping for a quiet life is that the child has learned a new strategy. This will be used again and again. It works! I couldn’t agree more and I’ll talk a bit more about giving in in a bit but I have a few comments about his ‘fix’ for temptation in the grocery store. The best way to avoid grocery store meltdowns is to: Make sure that the child has had his snack before going shopping Yes and No - those temptations have nothing to do with hunger We see, we want - unless we have a good strategy in mind Avoid shopping with a child in tow Yes and No - Duane often says he’d rather go to the store without me because we end up spending more money. LOL I’d prefer that you include your child in the grocery shopping trip If they are learning to write, have them write a shopping list I love the little child sized carts! Use this opportunity to teach them….anything! Colors, sorting, price comparison, counting money Use delivery services as much as possible Solves the problem of grocery shopping but doesn’t teach our children any form of discipline. Lobby supermarkets to stop stocking checkouts with junk food This one irks me the most. It demands other people take responsibility to make things easier for me. NO! I need to take responsibility for myself and I must teach my children to make responsible choices. Make it stop! Our temptation when our child is being disagreeable - they are whining about playing a song they think is too hard - or having a full-on temper tantrum - they are crying and hiding under the piano bench to avoid the piano (This happened many years ago in a lesson. I held the young man’s hand and marched him out to his mother’s car. I told her his lesson was over for the day and that we would try again next week. I am proud to tell you that same young man has continued lessons with me all these years and will be graduating high school this year. He has continued to study piano his own way and has achieved unconventional success but he has learned to keep working and to respect my instruction. Hugh goal achieved!) Our temptation in those situations is to give in. Just make it stop! Like Robert Locke says in his article, that is teaching your child a strategy but it is not about coping or perseverance or discipline. Giving in only teaches them that crying and being loud works. Each time you give in, their will becomes stronger. The first time you do not give in, you may feel like they will never stop crying or they will never settle down. Once they learn that tactic is not going to be successful, they will not work so hard at their tantrum (an uncontrolled outburst of anger and frustration, typically in a young child.) the next time. Each time you stand your ground. You speak calmly to the child, assure them that you love them and they are safe but remind them that they must obey you. Their tantrum will become less powerful and last a shorter period of time. If it’s not working, they are smart and will try a different strategy. Set YOURSELF up for success Here are some suggestions for setting your piano kid and yourself up for success. Prepare your child for what is to come. We don’t like surprises or changes to our routine. Explain, in a way they will understand, that something different is going to happen. It doesn’t have to be a long involved lecture, just a quick, “We usually go to piano lessons on Wednesday but now we get to go on Monday.” Make sure the task is something that will have a positive impact on your child. Don’t push them into harder music or piano contests if they aren’t ready - technically or emotionally. Work with your teacher to find music and activities that will progressively help them move forward in the piano skills. Take responsibility for yourself and how you and your spouse wish to raise your child. If you know your child has had a rough week, text your teacher or speak to them privately. Give him or her a heads up about what’s been happening. They will most likely support you and encourage your piano kid. Like the mom at the top of the show. I heard her working with her son. I didn’t interfere but when his sister’s lesson was done, I gave the mom my best smile and told her to hang in there, that I was sending her strong mom vibes. Parents need encouragement too. The next lesson this week, everybody was back on track. Final Thoughts Parenting is not for the faint of heart. Our children don’t come with instruction manuals, we have to learn as we go. Sometimes we will give in too easily because we are tired and we just want some peace and quiet. I want you to know you are doing a good work and I support you and hope to encourage you. Hang in there! Piano Parent Summer Survival Kit FREE mini eBook This episode is brought to you by “The Piano Parent Summer Survival Kit”. Alex recently got back from a mastermind and took away some really good points. One of them being is that as the leader of your company, your job isn't 100% all about building the product you're selling; your job is to build the team. A good team will help take you way further than no team. As a leader, you want to bring your team up and serve/help them to the best of your ability, not just manage them. Key Takeaways: It's important to implement good ideas right away. Don't wait! Are you thinking like a leader? As the CEO, it's your job to build the team, not so much the product. Your team builds the product. Don't just look at yourself as CEO, look at yourself as a coach as well. Provide your team with real leadership. Don't just ‘manage' them. You want your team to be better people in life and professionally. Things get better in your life when you serve others. It's cliche, but true. Your network is your net worth. The quality of your relationships is going to directly impact the type of person you are and the type of life you live. Alex has seen his morning routine evolve over the years, but he has never forgotten the importance of having one. Nearly every high-level achiever out there has a morning routine and there's a reason for it. On today's episode, Alex shares what his morning routine looks like and leaves you with seven questions (courtesy of Tony Robbins) that you should be asking yourself daily. Key Takeaways: Always strive to improve yourself. Find people who lift you up. Make sure you enjoy the journey as you're striving for your goals. Alex has noticed that high achievers have some sort of morning ritual. Alex's morning ritual has changed over the years. He reflects on what he used to do three years ago. What happens if you don't have a morning routine? Alex shares what his current morning routine looks like. Flood your body with water when you wake up. Your body is dehydrated! Alex watches his vision video every morning while he's brushing his teeth. Goals are kind of meaningless until there's a strong reason attached to them. When you write down your goals, make sure they MEAN something to you. Tony Robbins recommends that you ask yourself these seven questions.
