This week we welcome Jordan Sokel of PRESSING STRINGS. Pressings Strings lends credence to my feeling of never missing opening bands. I saw the band take an audience to a place they were not expecting to go, right to the merch table to purchase everything they could from the band.  Pressing Strings first formed in 2006 while Sokel was still in college. The band officially debuted in 2008 with their album, Where We Are, and now has a deep catalog that includes the albums Episodes (2010), Pressing Strings (2012), Life of a Tree (2013), Owe the Source (2015), and Settle In (2020) as well as two EPs, Most of Us (2016) and Morning Takes (2021). As Pressing Strings built up their impressive live show and paid their dues gigging, their fame was spreading throughout the entire Eastern Seaboard, leading to headlining venues across Maryland and Washington, DC and frequent festival appearances at Peach Music Festival, Firefly, Sweetwater 420 Fest, Floydfest, and more. Over the last decade, Pressing Strings has also toured and opened for the likes of The Beach Boys, Gov't Mule, Toad the Wet Sprocket, JJ Grey & Mofro, Rachael Yamagata, Neal Francis, The Toadies, Jerry Douglas, Sam Roberts Band, Michael Glabicki (Rusted Root), Rayland Baxter, and Junior Marvin of the Wailers. In addition to their touring success and amassing over 6 million streams, radio has also taken notice, with national AAA and public broadcasters across the U.S. eagerly embracing Pressing Strings and taking them to the top of their charts.PRESSING STRINGS - "And I For You"        OUT NOW!!!Thanks for listening!!! This week, we place a call to a Tennessee front porch to talk to rock-n'-soul trickster and acclaimed singer-songwriter Rayland Baxter. He's our first returning artist on the show for a good reason. Besides being a personal favorite of host Z. Lupetin since his gorgeous, folky debut Feathers and Fishhooks a decade ago, Z. was first able to catch up with Rayland in a Vegas hotel room (where he played through a cigarette pack mini amp) to discuss his deliciously catchy and soulful 2018 record Wide Awake and how growing up around his side-man legend dad Bucky Baxter (pedal steel and guitars for Bob Dylan's touring band, and countless others) inspired him to make his own playful visions real and to always follow his ear. But while Wide Awake felt accessible as a funky aural high five, his 2022 offering If I Were A Butterfly is a more challenging, experimental work - think Jackson Pollock filmed through a Super 8 camera after a mushroom trip. He uses archival audio going back to his childhood, sings about goats, demons and his forever yearning to find a love that loves him back in a way that doesn't seem transactional. The result is a fractured but intimately moving portrait. I'll admit, it took a few listens to warm to Butterfly, but after our latest talk, we can see how the ever-upbeat Baxter was processing some pretty heavy adult stuff on this record - most notably losing his dad and two of his most trusted recording partners to sudden ends. He hence did much of the producing himself, laying down the record in an abandoned rubber band factory. “Graffiti Street” shows Baxter at the height of his unique game, writing signature effortless rootsy-rock hooks with a new sense of gravity that never holds the butterfly within him down. The Show On The Road with Z. Lupetin

Welcome back, friends. Season 5 is here to help launch us into 2023, starting off with the new old-time sounds of the singing upright bassist who everyone calls “daddy,” Melissa Carper. Plus, the return of the rock-n-soul butterfly Rayland Baxter taped on his porch in Tennessee, and also a fascinating talk with Cleve Francis, a singing heart doctor who once rubbed elbows with Garth Brooks and the big boys in the country pantheon, but was recently rediscovered for putting out a transcendent complication of rare Black folk songs from the late 1960s. Recently Z. Lupetin went down to New Orleans and talked to artists in their studios and living rooms and, as the bandleader of Dustbowl Revival, will continue to bring you newly discovered music he found on the trail from coast to coast. When you produce acts like Taylor Swift, Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, Weezer, Green Day, Pink, Rayland Baxter, Keith Urban, and Harry Connick Jr., it's hard to find time for your own music. Yet in 2022, Butch Walker managed to release his 10th album, Butch Walker as … Glenn—a surprising tribute to the '70s piano-rock balladeers that were among the rulers of FM radio in his youth. Nonetheless, that didn't stop him from bringing a fleet of cool Fender and Gibson guitars, and a hemi of an amp, a Two-Rock Bloomfield Drive, on his recent It's About Damn Tour tour. For Walker, playing those guitars is something of a comeback celebration. In 2007, the house he was renting in Malibu from Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers caught fire and the Rome, Georgia, native lost the collection of classic axes he'd spent a lifetime accumulating, as well as the masters to every song of his own that he'd recorded. As Walker explains in the Rundown, it was a hard lesson about keeping up with insurance and making sure all his valuable instruments are covered—which they weren't.Today, he splits time in Nashville, where he's also built a new version of his RubyRed studio in the old Warner Music building, from the 1950s. As Walker said in a Facebook post. “There's been countless hits and amazing country and rock 'n' roll songs recorded here over the years. It smells a little funny. It's maybe haunted (hell, it was a morgue at one time). But I love it. It's got vibe for days, sounds incredible, and people dig working here.”So, dig into Walker's Rig Rundown, which we filmed in November at Nashville's Brooklyn Bowl.Brought to you by D'Addario XS Strings.

Kelsey Wilson is my guest on a new Leagto with Sean Mathis podcast. We met serendipitously three years ago after a Rayland Baxter show, and she is one of the coolest humans I know. She’s wonderfully candid, and the musical arc of her last 10 years is a beautiful story of growth that every artist should hear. Her mercurial ascent with Wild Child (alongside Alexander Beggins), her involvement with Glorietta , and her current project Sir Woman, have all taught her valuable lessons along the way. However, what she learned at a nerdy Celtic fiddle camp may be the highlight of our talk. She also takes time to recognize so many friends who helped her realize her vision along the way. Special thanks to Taylor Craft for being a part of this recording. Huge shout out to my old friend and huge music fan, Greg Davis for letting us use his Gusto Studio for this recording.

My guest today is Stephen Shirk an engineer, producer, and owner of Shirk Studio in Chicago. Originally from Bloomington, Illinois, he began playing in bands through junior high college at Miami University where he earned a degree in Business and Marketing.  In 1998 he moved to New York City to chase his dream of working in a recording studio where he worked at The Hit Factory, Pink Noise and Three Tree Productions as well as assisting on sessions at many legendary NYC facilities like Avatar (Power Station), Clinton, Right Track, and Sound on Sound. Recording in New York also exposed Stephen to a unique artistic community beyond that of music. His collaboration with Nadine Robinson would ultimately land one of his sound designs in the Museum of Modern Art’s Tempo exhibit in 2002.    In 2004, Stephen relocated to Chicago to continue producing and recording bands, creating sound for art installations, as well as providing audio services for the advertising community. This was the beginning of SHIRK studios. Through a chance meeting at SXSW in 2006, Stephen partnered with the music blog, HearYa.com, and began recording and filming the HearYa live sessions.  The video series featured powerful live in-studio recordings of artists like Alabama Shakes, Delta Spirit, Other Lives, Patterson Hood, White Denim, Strand of Oaks, Rayland Baxter and many more. In 2013 he acquired the building that now houses SHIRK studios in Chicago’s West Town neighbourhood. Firmly planted in Chicago, Stephen records, produces and hosts sessions with some of Chicago’s most celebrated artists as well as those just getting their start. I had the pleasure of spending a day at Shirk studio in 2019 when I hosted a mixing clinic there with Anthony Gravino. We spent the day listening to the beautiful Sphere console and I knew I found a new favourite studio in Chicago. Plus Stephen is the coolest. Thanks to our sponsors! My guest today is Eric Masse a Producer and engineer living in Nashville since 2006.  Self-described as a three times Grammy losing producer originally from Grand Rapids MI, later living in Boston. Eric is a fan of great songs and focuses on producing (or co-producing), cutting, and mixing the records he makes.  He loves European Football and is a Chelsea FC supporter.  He loves giving people the thumbs up. He has a beard and almost exclusively wears plain black t-shirts. After graduating Berklee School of Music in Boston he moved to Nashville to intern at Blackbird Studio by day and tend bar at night. Masse’s first studio was called "Cabin In the Woods" (Fairview, TN), followed by Idiot Dog (Music Row), and finally, The Casino (East Nashville), where he works today. When a record calls for a larger studio, he prefers Southern Ground. In 2014, while playing in a golf tournament, Masse met eminent Nashville producer, Frank Liddell. That connection led to a collaboration that has born several projects, most notably Miranda Lambert’s 2016 release, The Weight of These Wings produced by Masse, Liddell, and Glenn Worf which won the Academy of Country Music's Album of the Year award. Beginning his career playing in bands, running a DIY recording studio in Michigan, and doing tech work around the Detroit area, he quickly found himself working at FBT (The Bass Brothers) studio as an assistant engineer. From there, he cut his teeth working with artists and producers of the likes of Mr. Porter, Eminem, Pharoahe Monch, and many more.  He soon got a call to set up a studio at Jack White's house and help out on the White Stripes’ “Get Behind Me Satan.” Shortly after that, Collin was hired over at Carl Craig’s Planet-E records. He engineered for the next five years alongside Carl on remixes, production, live sound in Europe, mastering, and mixing.  Collin next got the call from Dan Auerbach to help him get his Akron studio up and running. This led to a move to Nashville and many critically acclaimed albums working as the lead engineer at Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound. During his time at Easy Eye Sound he earned a Grammy win for engineering and mixing Dr. John’s “Locked Down”. Along with a Grammy win for engineering Cage The Elephants “Tell Me I Pretty”. Rayland Baxter will be releasing a new EP called Good mmornin’ due out July 26th, which is a series of covers of Mac Miller’s work. If you’re unfamiliar with Miller, he was a hip hop artist who past last September at the age of 26. He was prolific during his short life, but demons, including depression and drug abuse caught up to him. The juxtaposition of Rayland’s spirit and Miller’s work was kind of initially difficult to get my head around, but having heard the EP now several times, I’m not only a fan of what Rayland has created but now I want to explore even more of Mac Miller’s work. I can tell you the sincerity with which Rayland speaks about this project is undeniable on the work itself. Good mmornin’ is a very solid listen, and an absolute stunning tribute to Mac Miller. Though the EP is only out at the end of the month you can catch Rayland on the road where he may be performing some of these or other Mac Miller songs. I’ve been following Rayland Baxter’s career ever since his debut Feathers and FishHooks, an album I wore out, if you could do such a thing to a CD or digital files. What I appreciate most about Rayland is his attention to detail in his writing regarding the human condition. His thoughts, are your thoughts, and while he is serious about his personal craft, he isn’t disjointed from the reality we all live in. I sat down with Rayland to unpack this new record, one I think you should listen to. “Wide Awake” is definitely one of my favorite records of the year thus far. The outstanding song writing is matched by the absolute magical production value and playing by the entire cast. For more on Rayland visit raylandbaxter.com. Kevin PresbreyUkulele infused rootsy folk rock is one way of describing the vibration Kevin Presbrey is casting out there these days, but you could also very well say that his songs have a way of giving you that cozy feeling of being snuggled up by the fireplace in your favorite hooded sweatshirt. He's warm and familiar to you. Embracing the influences of storytellers Jim Croce, Don McLean, and Van Morrison along with modern troubadours Ryan Adams and James Bay, Presbrey's Midwestern sound and personality is the vehicle for the stories he lives and shares.  Since the early 2000s, KP has amassed a loyal following throughout North America thanks in part to his songs appearing on MTV, VH1, and Fox along with being afforded the opportunity to share the stage with national acts Sister Hazel, The Doobie Brothers, Rusted Root, Big Head Todd and Tonic. Turning heads in Chicago's music scene with his first solo release Dust Unto Dust, his song "Always With Me" made its way to the airwaves of WXRT radio in 2013 followed by a national television performance on WGN's morning news. Gaining steam in 2017, Presbrey's relentless lust for connecting with audiences has driven the release of his fourth studio album Falling Together. Where Dust Unto Dust (Produced by Ryan Hadlock: The Lumineers, Strumbellas, Vance Joy) centered around picking up the pieces following the sudden passing of his father in 2012, Falling Together is a reflection of his experiences as life moved forward with his father there in spirit. Recorded at Left + Right Studios in Nashville, TN with producer Skylar Wilson (Andrew Combs, Rayland Baxter, Justin Townes Earle), KP tapped into that white hot East Nashville vibe this time around in his quest to perpetuate positive feelings, togetherness, and simply finding the bright side in life. From great tragedy comes great triumph - and peace.

PAUL BURCH, a pioneer in fusing an unmistakably modern voice to American roots music, celebrates his 10th release, 'Meridian Rising', on Plowboy Records. The album is a first-of-its-kind concept album based on the life of Jimmie Rodgers the genre-breaking superstar of the late 1920s whose blend of pop, folk, and blues anticipated rock n roll. No Depression has already deemed it "a contender for best roots album of 2016." RAYLAND BAXTER is a gentleman, a singer of song, a teller of tale, a picker of strings, a thinker of things. Growing up in Nashville, Tennessee, Baxters father Bucky (a multi-instrumentalist for Bob Dylan, Steve Earle and Ryan Adams, among others) made sure music was just a natural part of life, a soundtrack to childhood. Hed always just let things settle into place naturally, following his gut from Tennessee to Colorado to Israel and back again, not knowing that when he returned home hed have a handful of songs and the knowledge that, at the end of the day, he didnt want to do anything else but make music. Baxter's full-length album 'Imaginary Man' on ATO Records was released to widespread critical attention last year. WoodSongs Kid: Joseph Oharek is a self taught, 12 year-old bluegrass musician from Oviedo, Florida.

Whilst sipping a tequila at a sidewalk table at Epstein's in New York's Lower East Side, Rayland Baxter demonstrates how to write poetic lyrics that are open to interpretation, a trick that his father learned from playing with Bob Dylan. Baxter's sophomore album, Imaginary Man, is full of such lyrics, and he explains how his questions about human existence inspired many of the LP's tracks. raylandbaxter.com drypaintsigns.com
