Love Guitar Smarts and want to get in touch with us? Send us a Text HERE!Greetings! Welcome back to the podcast! It's been quite some time since we released an episode of the show, due to a unplanned break. Our wonderful host and friend Kiran had to take a break to recover from a very unexpected health issue but we are so glad to say he is recovering well. Whilst he takes the time to concentrate on his recovery, our good friend Damo Lodrick has stepped into his rather large shoes, to help us bring the show back for regular service in 2025. In this episode we talk about modelling, valve amps, tone in general, modern music and the social media generation, and much more! The Bros. Landreth return to Hidden Track for a Season 5 Session!  When they started their band, it was just an excuse to spend time together, given that the brothers David and Joey Landreth were often embroiled in their careers as top–call players in the Winnipeg music scene.   The brothers came together to write some original songs and their first album as The Bros. Landreth was born. Released independently without much fanfare, Let It Lie soon drew them an audience from across the world.  It's somewhat ironic that the album is titled “Let It Lie”, as it did anything but lay down - especially where the Bro's musical careers are concerned! Ten years on, this beautiful album continues to resonate and do astonishing things in the world. For instance – it would have seemed impossible for David and Joey to believe in 2013 that a decade later, they could say that a song on this album has been recorded by one of their all-time heroes, Bonnie Raitt – and that it won a Grammy Award!  It says a lot about the work ethic of the Bros. Landreth that their way of celebrating the debut record's 10th anniversary was no mere victory lap. Instead, they created a whole new version of the album – featuring acoustic re-interpretations of all the songs on Let It Lie – and took it on the road for a gigantic tour. It was during that tour that the band found themselves with a couple days off in Alberta! Between their sold-out concerts, the Bros. Landreth elected to play a free Saturday covers set at a local pub and took a trip down to CKUA's Edmonton Performance Space for this beautiful Hidden Track Session.  Something of an intergenerational affair, this Session features David Landreth on bass (and some harmonica). Then, on acoustic guitars, we have: Joey Landreth, long-time collaborator Murray Pulver, (from hitmaking Winnipeg bands like Crash Test Dummies and Doc Walker); and the band's drummer, Roman Clarke, a great young multi-instrumentalist, who like everyone else in this session, is an absolute monster singer and musician – as well as a kind-hearted, down-to-earth, sincere, and hilarious human being.  This episode is a candid visit with the Bros. Landreth – in conversation, plus live performances of three songs from Let It Lie: "Nothing", "Where Were We", and that Grammy-winning song of theirs, "Made Up Mind".  Host: Grant Stovel | Producer: Scott Zielsdorf | Graphics: Craig Taffs | Music: Doug Hoyer Session recording: Scott Zielsdorf | Mixing: Duke Paetz | Video Editor: Jasmine Vickaryous.   The Hidden Track podcast is a CKUA production made possible by the generosity of our donors. Welcome back! On this episode of the Guitar Smarts podcast, Kiran has tagged in our good friend and previous guest Mr Damo Lodrick to provide some valuable insight on the importance of training your ears. Music is something we experience in many ways, and often we find ourselves moved by things we hear but do not necessarily understand. Matt & Damo are here today to help you understand why it is a valuable endeavour to learn more about why music does this, and to train our ears to better understand the relationship between what we hear, how it makes us feel, and what is really happening in the nitty gritty of music theory. A session guitarist in Winnipeg (I saw him as the second guitarist in Bros. Landreth. If Ariel is  playing beside Joey Landreth and more than  holding his own, you know he is good) He began his career quietly showcasing new guitars online for the companies making them. He had no idea the effect he was having on the guitar and music fans of the world, especially in Europe. So. when he finally decided to start his solo career and released his first album How Long  (2019)  Ariel was gobsmacked to find a ready and willing audience in Europe and across Canada, then in the USA. Then came Headway, Mile End, Mile End 2, Familiar Ground, the Downtown EP and just now Reasons Why. He's touring Canada Sept 26th in Calgary Sept 27 in Edmonton Sept 28 in Saskatoon Sept 29 Winnipeg  (home town) BUT FIRST – On Sept 23 he performs at the 2023 Eric Clapton Crossroads Festival in LA. Canadian alt-country group the Bros. Landreth have become known for bringing not just layers of blues, rock, and eclectic modern influence to the traditional country sound, but for Joey Landreth's depth as a guitarist and stunning tone on the instrument.Built on a lifetime of brothers Joey and Dave's absorbing classic country music, the band was launched with the release of 2013's Let It Lie, through which they not-long-after made a mark on the scene when the album garnered a JUNO Award for Roots and Traditional Album of the Year in 2015. Following the release of 2019's '87, the group later received another major accolade when Bonnie Raitt covered Let It Lie's “Made Up Mind” on her 2022 release, Just Like That…While the original lineup included drummer Ryan Voth and pianist Alex Campbell, and the band has toured with guitarist Ariel Posen, the brothers have since taken a step back from the larger band arrangement to lead as a duo. Their latest, 2022's Coming Home, spotlights the two in that dynamic, while featuring a few backing players.Joey Landreth hung with John Bohlinger and the PG team before the Bros. There's really no such thing as an overnight success! Dreams can be experienced but it takes the work of time to find the crossroads between dreams and reality. The Bros. Landreth dreamt of making music, just like their Dad Wally in Winnipeg. Wally wanted that too because he kept spinning vinyl at home,  like a music teacher. But no schlock..only the good stuff. Little Feat, The Eagles, Neil Young, CS&Nash, and Bonnie Raitt. Years later the Brothers are playing at the Winnipeg Folk Festival when they were approached by the headliner – none other than Bonnie Raitt. She asked if they would send her songs to record because they reminded her of her friend Lowell George from Little Feat. David and Joey Landreth wrote and rejected many songs. They felt they weren't up to Bonnie's standards but eventually – again years later – they sent a song they had recorded Made up mind. Just so happens it's the same song Bonnie heard them play and she said – that's the song. Two years later the boys hear from friends in Nashville that Bonnie is recording that song and then she makes it the first single off of Just Like That. Both album and song go on to win Grammys this year and The Bros. Landreth has become “a thing”. Here's a discussion with David Landreth about those Grammy moments and the rest of the story.  Well done boys. Congrats Wally!! What a win for Bonnie and great music.

It all happened quite naturally: Joey and David were born into Winnipeg music royalty, they each separately fell into careers as hotshot sidemen, eventually joined forces as The Bros. Landreth, paid their dues by clocking endless miles on tour, and won global acclaim (as well as a Juno Award) with their very first album.   But it's been far from effortless for the brothers, who have always painstakingly pursued their own musical path. It's a path that's led them to craft a signature sound as a band; one built around supple musical savvy, with rootsy and candid songwriting at its core, and all draped in the kind of gorgeous vocal harmonies that you can only get from family. It's also a path that's caused them to be on the road virtually non-stop for well over a decade! The last few years, though, have seen The Bros. Landreth shift gears in remarkable, often painful, and entirely exhilarating new ways. Their 2022 album Come Morning is the product of a period of soul-searching that was brought on by the ravages of the road, the sudden and terrifying stillness of the pandemic era, and also by the next generation of Landreths! Both Joey and Dave became fathers, right around the same time, in the lead-up to creating this album.   Come Morning has been hailed as an artistic breakthrough across the roots music world. And there's one other 2022 release that's been rather astounding for the brothers, as well: one of their biggest musical heroes covered a Bros. Landreth song! In fact, roots music titan Bonnie Rait not only recorded a song of theirs, she made it the lead-off track and first single from her own long-awaited 2022 album.   We caught up with the Bros' guitar player and chief lead vocalist Joey Landreth during a short respite from the intercontinental Come Morning release tour, in a brief break between the European leg and the October 2022 jaunt that sees them blaze through Alberta and beyond. At home in Winnipeg, Joey reflects on their magical musical hometown; early influences ranging from their dad to Bach to NoFX; the struggle to find identity and meaning though music; the demons that inhabit this new album, writing about being a survivor of sexual abuse; having your mind blown by being a dad; feeling inspired to approach life and music with a child-like sense of wonder; what it's like hearing your hero play a song that you and your brother wrote; and creating an album that's all about getting through the proverbial dark night of the soul, striving toward the sunshine after the rain.

The very first time I heard The Bros Landreth my heart jumped “those boys were raised on Little Feat (One of the very best bands to ever step onto a stage. Anywhere)  They were led by the late Lowell George. Lead singer, primary writer, singular guitarist. When I got to interview Joey and brother David, they spun a story of growing up in Winnipeg. Their father was a well-known working musician and the house was filled with Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Poco records but the most popular were the early 70's albums by Little Feat. (Little Feat. Sailin' Shoes. Dixie Chicken. Feats don't fail me now) It was a true musical education. This all leads us to this Podcast featuring Joey Landreth and his new solo album All that you dream. It's a tribute to Lowell George and Little Feat. A “thank you” if you will. Turns out, we're the ones who should be saying thank you. It's a beautiful table full of the Little Feat Dixie Chicken. One generation saluting another. The Bros are headed back to Europe for tour dates(listed here) Remarkably they are even bigger stars in Europe than here but that imbalance will surely change this year when this killer solo album is joined by the next Bros Landreth album, in the Spring! A chat with the super talented guitarist and songwriter Mark Lavengood as well as fans Steve, Jacob, and Rick. We talk about how the fans discovered Mark Lavengood. Our stories ramble into how Mark has been making the best of the pandemic and his new studio. We get into Mark’s soundtrack to life and leap into playing the dobro. We wrap things up with our dream show venue and who we want to see there. Along the way, we share many laughs.Becoming a fan of Mark LavengoodWe kicked off our chat by exploring how the fans became fans of Mark Lavengood. Steve became a fan through his work on the tech crew at the Ark. He had the pleasure of working during several performances by Mark.. The first time was during the Erin Zindle (Ebird & Friends) holiday show when Mark was with Lindsay Lou and the Flatbellys. Steve fell in love with Mark’s playing and energy on stage. He’s been a fan ever since.Jacob became a fan of Mark’s when he saw him at a Rob Reiderr basement show when Mark was playing with Lindsay Lou. Jacob continued with a happy accident ordering Mark Lavengood’s No Part of Nothin album thinking he was getting a Lindsay Lou album. Despite the initial surprise when spinning the disc, Jacob loved the album and looks forward to more from Mark Lavengood.Rick became a fan through me (Chuck). He went to a show at the Chelsea Alehouse for one of their Wednesday night bluegrass sessions where Mark was jamming with Jason Dennie of Thunderwude. After seeing Mark live, he became an instant fan.Handling the PandemicThe pandemic has been a bit of a forced sabbatical for Mark. He is keeping busy by working on his new house in Coral, Michigan which is about 30 minutes north of Grand Rapids. Mark is also doing live streams, some outdoor socially distanced shows, and working on his new studio.Mark’s children have been helping him out around the house. They are enjoying making music with Dad. Check out the videos on Mark’s Facebook page for a taste of the fun.Home StudioMark is jazzed to get his new studio up and running. He has converted the detached garage on his property into a studio with a control room, isolation booth, and live room. While there are some tweaks to be made, the work is nearly complete. In fact, Mark used the new studio to lay down some guest tracks on the new Desmond Jones albumI asked if the new studio is an extension of his Bear Mark Productions. Mark relayed that Bear Mark is more about booking and promotion currently. Unfortunately, with the pandemic, this aspect of his livelihood is on hold until we get live music rolling again (hopefully later in 2021).Working From HomeBeing able to spend more time at home allows Mark to focus not only on family, but on dialing in his playing and his overall performance. It is difficult to get others together to jam, but this opportunity to work on recording and songwriting makes the downtime from the road rewarding. One new goal is writing a new song a week and using that as another avenue to keep his fans on Patreon engaged. Ultimately, Mark would like to expand the studio to record other artists on a variety of projects.Jacob was curious what Mark is using to record in the studio. Mark mentioned that currently he is recording via Logic into his iMac. Mark is in the process of picking up a Universal Audio Apollo recording interface which will provide an array of plug-ins to expand the versatility of his studio.Getting into the DobroSteve was interested in how Mark got into playing the dobro. Mark started out in middle school and the first year of high school band. However, at the time, being a wrestler was his focus. Mark got back into music playing drums. A friend asked him to jam in his senior year in a band called Frisco Denaro.Mark’s first serious band started out with some friends playing together on acoustic guitars. He met up with Bed Fidler to create music for winter/sessions. In that band, Ben offered Mark his resonator guitar and he fell in love with the instrument. The band morphed into the self proclaimed  “Rebels of Folk Grass”. Mark then got into the slide playing of Joe Wilson and Drew Howard. Mark did a great tour with Joe and Drew called Dobros Heal The World.Steve asked if Mark still has his Mule. He does, although he may need to sell it to make ends meet. A reminder to all our music fans that artists are hurting due to the pandemic. If you can buy music and merchandise during this tough time, it will go a long way to helping out.Mark’s Soundtrack to LifeEarlier, Mark mentioned the term “folk-grass” to describe the blending of genres that he started in winter/sessions. This hybrid of Americana continued with Lindsay Lou and ultimately within his solo work. Rick really dug that term and was curious how Mark got interested in the variety of music he enjoys and performs.Throughout Mark’s life, the soundtrack to his life has evolved. This soundtrack includes a variety of sounds from Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin to Bruce Springsteen. Mark’s first CD was a single by Snoop Dog “It’s a Doggy Dog World” which got him into west coast rap along with artists Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.Growing up, Mark’s brother played drums which influenced him to start off with drums. In addition, Mark’s dad is a guitar player and classic rock connoisseur. While there were guitars in the house, Mark didn’t tackle the instrument until he was a senior in high school. This would be the time he started playing with his buddy Ben (which eventually led to winter/sessions). It was during this time frame that Mark got into folk, bluegrass and bands like The Grateful Dead and Bela Fleck. The current soundtrack to Mark’s world when he isn’t making his own, is in Spanish. He is a big fan of Andres Calamaro. Mark feels his songwriting is impeccable. Favorite TuningsJacob was curious about what tunings Mark uses, hoping the question wasn’t too nerdy. Mark confirmed it was definitely nerdy, but given that most of us on this episode of Fans With Bands are guitar nerds, it’s all good. The dobro is tuned to open G (GBDGBD). However, Mark likes Open D or capo to an Open E to spice things up. On his 8 string slides Mark uses a C6 tuning. Hit up Mark for a full guitar lesson if you want to dive more into tunings.Drop Everything ArtistSteve wanted to know if there was a particular artist or group that Mark would drop everything to jam with. Mark laughed saying there are so many. At the top of the list is Billy Strings. Having had the opportunity to see Mark open up for Billy Strings and join him on stage, I can attest to this being a musical moment to savor.Mark would love to collaborate with artists in South and Central America given his love for the music from the region. In the course of our conversation, Mark shared that he has tons of ideas and is working pulling them together with an artist from Uruguay.Dream Show Wrap UpTo wrap-up our chat with Mark Lavengood, I asked everyone where they would love to go see (or play a show) and who they would see. Mark would be down with seeing and opening for Tedeschi Trucks at Red Rocks in Colorado. Jacob would love to be attending and performing at the Wheatland Music Festival in Michigan.Mark stole Steve’s idea of Red Rocks, so Steve shifted to The Caverns in Tennessee to see a show by Ariel Posen with Joey Landreth. Rick would love to check out a show at the legendary Ryman Auditorium in Nashville perhaps with Jason Isbell. For my part, I’d love to see Mark and Sturgill Simpson jam in my living room. In all seriousness Sturgill, if you need a mandolin or dobro player on your next tour, call up our friend Mark Lavengood.Dig into the stories, laughs, and much more in this episode of Fans With Bands with Mark Lavengood. Noah Derksen is a Canadian singer-songwriter with a wonderfully soulful folk-roots Americana sound and some very strong songs. Also an American citizen, Noah Derksen's new album "America, Dreaming" - which was produced by Murray Pulver (The Bros. Landreth, Joey Landreth, Doc Walker, etc.) in Winnipeg, is a search for identity, reflecting on time spent living and travelling across the United States. "As an American-citizen growing up in Canada, I held an unrealistic depiction of the United States as a land of opportunity and freedom. In years spent living, touring, and working south of the border, I’ve discovered the practical limitations to that opportunity and freedom. America, Dreaming represents an observation of my home and native land south of the 49th parallel; an observation both externally, of how things change with time, and internally, on how I have had to shift my own perspective." Noah Derksen joined us in the studio to chat about the new album, and while he was with us played three songs from the new album live. For more information, visit https://www.noahderksen.com. Music: Noah Derksen "Hoping You Would Stay" (Live), "Lonely in America" (Live) and "What Kind of Love is That" (Live).

Joey Landreth and his older brother David grew up in a total music house in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Father Wally was a working musician, playing gigs and making records with everyone he met. The boys raided the record collection every day..soaking up blues, r&b, Jazz and country. Later, when they both picked up guitar and started to make music they focused in on The Allman Brothers, Ry Cooder and Little Feat. The Bros. Landreth won a JUNO for Let it Lie. The album took over their lives for four years of touring. Their latest record 87 is due out this September.  We found David and Joey at the Bear Creek Festival  in Grand Prairie, their only Canadian gig this year.  All the other brother performances will be in the USA,  the UK and Europe.

Welcome back to The Music Scout! Episode 56 could potentially be my favourite episode for a while, featuring some outstanding music this week for you to chill out to whilst all these snow storms are going on (UK specific)!  Yes we have lots of snow here in the UK so look out incase there are more episodes of The Music Scout this week as I might get very bored! I have plenty of music to broadcast too! Anyway, some artists this week that will be featured are Lo Moon with their debut album, some blues with Joey Landreth and some impressive debut work from Sunday Arches to kick the show off plus much more!  Enjoy the episode folks and I'll see you all next week!
