“Bryan Robinson is the seminal voice in work addiction recovery. I have greatly benefited from his guidance, experience, knowledge and wisdom on the topic of healing from what I consider to be the quietest and most insidious (and often praised) addiction in today's times.” —Alanis Morissette, singer/songwriter A step-by-step guide to reestablishing work-life balance Americans love a hard worker. The employee who toils eighteen-hour days and eats meals on the run between appointments is usually viewed with a combination of respect and awe. But for many, this lifestyle leads to family problems, a decline in work productivity, and, ultimately, physical and mental burnout. Intended for anyone touched by what Robinson calls “the best-dressed problem of the twenty-first century,” Chained to the Desk in a Hybrid World provides an inside look at the impact of work stress on those who live and work with workaholics—partners, spouses, children, and colleagues—as well as the appropriate techniques for clinicians who treat them. This groundbreaking book builds on the research included in three previous editions of Chained to the Desk from the best-selling author and widely respected family therapist Bryan E. Robinson. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of working from home, Robinson finds that the agonies of work stress have only become more challenging. Recent years have seen an unprecedented shift to remote work, which has made it significantly harder to maintain the already delicate work-life balance, weakened as it is by smartphones and other technology. The result is that many workaholics are more stressed and burnt out than ever before in their work, despite being constantly in the presence of family. Chained to the Desk in a Hybrid World both counsels and consoles. It provides a step-by-step guide to help readers spot, understand, and ultimately recover from workaholism. Bryan E. IT IS ONE YEAR UNTIL THE TOKYO 2020 OLYMPICS!!! With all of the celebrations and ceremonies happening in Tokyo and with National Olympic Committees around the world, we couldn't be more excited. We wanted to get some perspective on what it's like on the ground in Tokyo, so we asked Roy Tomizawa to come on our show and give us some insight. Roy's the author of the blog The Olympians: From 1964 to 2020 and the new book 1964: The Greatest Year in the History of Japan – How the Tokyo Olympics Symbolized Japan’s Miraculous Rise from the Ashes (spoiler alert: This will be our book club selection in the run-up to the Tokyo Games, but Roy probably wouldn't mind it if you got your copy now. Neither would we). Naturally, we have a lot of Tokyo 2020 news, including releases of the volunteer uniforms and the medals. We also learned something about Summer Olympics medals design guidelines that we hadn't realized. A number of Tokyo test events are underway, so we decided that we should also run our own fan test event -- test out your viewing situation and send us pictures on Twitter, Insta or our Facebook group with #OFtestevent. We want to know: How comfortable is your chair/couch? What's your snacking strategy? How many screens are you watching? Will you have a uniform? Also in Team Olympic Fever news, we have a number of athletes competing in the Pan American Games right now -- best wishes to artistic swimmer Jacqueline Simoneau, team handball player Sarah Gascon, modern pentathlete Samantha Achterberg and shooter Kim Rhode. We hope you have a great time and get personal bests! Plus, our Team Olympic Fever translator Grace Hahn has published her own ebook designed to help people who want a career that takes them around the world. It's called Work Remotely and Travel the World: A Guide for Real People with Real Responsibilities. Plus, we discuss the possible sites for the Paris 2024 surfing competition (including some choice diplomatic words from TBach himself). And it wouldn't be an episode without some doping news, this time from the world of wrestling, courtesy of the dulcet tones of Jason Bryant.
