AlderI discovered that some people may not necessarily be “people pleasers”, but they still don't live with self-integrity…you know not living in accordance with one's priorities, desires and values. That could be because they don't truly know themselves or maybe don't want to ruffle any feathers. Therefore, they feel it's safer to live by societal expectations and beliefs rather than their true beliefs.There's also the trap of having an overly busy lifestyle that many people embark on with - little time to ask themselves “what do I really want?” or “what makes me happy?” I get it. I've spent my lifetime being a people pleaser, so when I broke the cycle I decided to dedicate the last 12 years to building a business that guides and supports individuals in living an authentic and fulfilling life. But first, why does authenticity even matter? Well, it's way easier being yourself than putting so much effort and energy into people pleasing for others. The energy it requires to continuously analyze situations and people so you can respond “appropriately” is insane!!! When someone is authentic, we look at them and feel their honesty, confidence and most likely wish we could do the same. Actually, don't you feel great being around someone who is authentic? It gives you the permission to be authentic too - feeling the freedom to be you. There are so many benefits to being authentic – respect from others, greater trust, solid and meaningful relationships, you can self-actualize, and simply be at your best!If you're on the “becoming my authentic self” journey, read on to understand the four pillars to being your authentic self. Essentially a roadmap on how to achieve (and maintain) being authentic – i.e. NO MORE PEOPLE PLEASING, oh, and some questions to support you on this journey. Find a comfortable position, either sitting or lying down, and gently close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, filling your lungs with fresh air, and exhale slowly, releasing any tension or distractions from your body and mind. Shift your focus to the present moment. Begin by bringing your attention to your breath, noticing the sensation of the air flowing in and out of your nostrils or the rise and fall of your abdomen. Allow your breath to anchor you in the present. As you continue to breathe, bring your awareness to your body. Scan through your body, from head to toe, noticing any areas of tension, discomfort, or relaxation. Simply observe any sensations that arise without judgment or the need to change them. Now, expand your awareness to your surroundings. Notice the sounds around you—the gentle hum of the environment, the distant sounds of nature or city life. Allow these sounds to come and go, without attaching to them or getting caught up in them. Shift your attention to the physical sensations in your body. Notice the points of contact between your body and the surface you're resting on. Feel the weight of your body being supported. Observe any sensations of warmth, coolness, or tingling. As you continue to practice present-moment awareness, gently bring your attention to the thoughts and emotions that may arise. Allow them to come and go, observing them with curiosity and detachment. Resist the urge to analyze or judge these thoughts and emotions. Imagine yourself sitting by a serene and calm lake. Visualize the stillness of the water, reflecting the beauty of the surrounding nature. Allow your thoughts and emotions to be like ripples on the surface of the lake, arising and fading away. With each breath, invite a sense of acceptance and non-judgment toward your experience. Embrace the present moment as it is, without seeking to change or control it. Cultivate a gentle curiosity, observing each moment with fresh eyes. Now, shift your attention back to your breath. Notice the sensation of the air entering your body with each inhale, and the release of tension with each exhale. Allow your breath to be your anchor, bringing you back to the present moment whenever your mind wanders. Take a few moments to fully immerse yourself in this present-moment awareness. Allow yourself to be fully present, without the need to be anywhere else or do anything else. Embrace the richness and beauty of the present moment. When you feel ready, gently bring your awareness back to the room. Wiggle your fingers and toes, allowing gentle movement to return to your body. Take a deep breath in, and as you exhale, open your eyes. Carry the practice of mindfulness and present-moment awareness with you throughout your day. This presentation defines mindfulness, describes research supporting mindfulness’ benefit, provides to experience and cultivate mindfulness, and ties these experiences and research to the process of recovery, making explicit the connection. This program is part of the Dawn Farm Education Series, a FREE, annual education series developed to provide accurate, helpful, hopeful, practical, current information about substance use disorders, recovery, family and related issues. The Education Series is organized by Dawn Farm, a non-profit community of programs providing a continuum of substance use disorder treatment and recovery support services. Robinson, MSW, MPH, Ph.D. Dr. Libby Robinson has practiced mindfulness meditation since 1979 and was trained to teach Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction by Jon Kabat-Zinn and colleagues at the University of Massachusetts Center for Mindfulness. She has taught Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction since 2003. She recently retired from the University of Michigan, where she was a Research Assistant Professor, carrying out NIH-funded research on the role of spiritual and religious change in recovery. She also did an NIAAA post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Michigan Addiction Research Center and was on the social work faculty at Case Western Reserve University and the University at Buffalo. Dr. Robinson has an MSW, an MPH and a Ph.D. in Psychology and Social Work from the University of Michigan.

Mindfulness and meditation began as aspects of various religions, but are now used more broadly because of the evidence that focused breathing and meditation can ease physical and emotional stress.  Mindfulness is not just sitting still and closing your eyes, as this is not relaxing for some people, but rather it is a way to train our attention and clear our thoughts.  This is training our minds to be quiet and stay in the present moment as well as training our bodies to be aware of the sensations going on around us.  A focused mind is a happy mind, so it is important for people young and old to learn to be mindful. Children have less attachment to memories of trauma early in their lives, so it is important for us to teach them specific practices of mindfulness such as breathing, to give them the tools to cope with their emotions and external stimuli as they get older.  Breathing is the first thing we receive after birth and it is the last thing we lose before death, and though we usually don’t even realize that we are breathing, it is a tool that we can use to our advantage throughout our lives. As part of your children’s bedtime routine, have them lay on their backs and put a stuffed animal on their bellies and then practice focused breathing by having them “take the stuffed animal for a ride” as their bellies go up and down as they breathe. Another good way to teach children mindfulness is using books such as “Moody Cow Meditates” or “Spinning Inward.” I also recommend that you look into the work of Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts, Dr. Susan Kaiser’s video about how our anxious minds are like a shaken snow globe, and Dr. Nazanin Moali’s Sexology podcast.   To connect with Psic.
