Frost, Petrov & Rasmussen visit victory lane at Road America As the Road to Indy Series got back on track for the 1st time in the 2020 season. For the first time since 2019, the Road to Indy and IndyCar Series was competing on the same weekend at Road America and based upon the IndyCar results the Road to Indy stars that have graduated from the series were truly shining in the IndyCar series with Pato O’Ward, Felix Rosenqvist having great showings and duking it out in race number two at Road America. Focusing on the action that took place with the Indy Pro 2000 both of the series on the Road to Indy qualified in wet conditions. The series was on the track at Road America on Thursday and Friday so that they could be out of the track in time for the Indy cars to come in for the weekend double-header. In the first race with the Indy Pro 2000, Danial Frost only led one lap, that was the very last lap. He had qualified in the pole position but due to a gearing issue he was bumped back and had a penalty that he had to start at the rear of the grid, and he made his way all the way up by winning the race by .0556 seconds over Devlin DeFrancesco. Colin Kaminsky in his first run in the Indy Pro 2000 was on the podium for that race. The fast lap of the race was Manuel Sulaiman and he turned in that fast lap. That meant that he was on the pole for race number two. Race number two was won by Artem Petrov from St. Petersburg, Russia. He started third in the race and was able to move himself into the winning position. Sting Ray Robb finished second and Danial Frost followed up his victory in the first race with a podium finish. Two drivers that do not want to even have you mention Road America again Hunter McElrae the rookie in the series moving up from USF2000 and Parker Thompson. Both finished in the back half of the field, the back bottom portion of the field. Good solid showings for last year's USF2000 champion Braden Eves in the first race. Let me check the details here. The first race he had a fourth just off of the podium and in the second race fifth. So, if we look at the points and here's something that I wish that would be worked out with Road to Indy especially with there not being any Indy Lights this year, no Indy Lights races. I would love to see a graphic popped up during the main NBC broadcast or NBC Sports Network that gave you the top three or top five and points of the series because as you see, those drivers that are on the Road to Indy actually end up making it into the Series. They're folks that the race fans need to know a little bit more about it. But the top standings for Indy Pro 2000 Danial Frost with his victory and podium position. He leads with 52 points, Devlin DeFrancesco with 46 points, Sting Ray Robb in third with 42, Artem Petrov with his win in the second race, a lower standing in the first race but he's fourth at 39. Colin Kaminski very solid 37 points tied with Braden Eves and that rounds out your top five or top six of it. In the team championship Juncos Racing 52 points. Turn 3 Motorsports, Danial Frost running for Turn 3 Motorsports, absolutely fantastic to see this. One of the hardest working teams putting their cars together and having different drivers in it at spring training when I was down at Homestead. It's great to see the results for this team of not only what Danial Frost is doing but eighth place and points Antoine Comeau being there. So, Juncos, Turn 3, Andretti Steinbrenner Autosport not in the Indy Lights. So, they're fielding a car in Indy Pro and then Exclusive Autosport. Turning the page to USF2000 Christian Rasmussen. Christian Rasmussen, he took the lead or took the points lead won both races max points because he was the fastest in both races. In race number one he edged out Josh Green with Cape Motorsport, a great showing for Josh with back to back podiums a second place and a third place in the second race.

I had an opportunity to catch up with Prescott during a break from his engineering studies in England, just before he left to attend preseason testing in Homestead. https://youtu.be/fcgR0GzdShA Exclusive Autosport is thrilled to announce that 19-year-old Prescott Campbell will make his debut in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship this season with their race-winning operation. The Newport Beach, CA native and Oxford, UK resident will pilot the teams #91 Tatuus USF-17, featuring their trademark red and black Exclusive Autosport livery with branding from the Lucas Oil School of Racing. Campbell is the reigning 2019 Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series champion, an accomplishment that earned him a $75,000 scholarship towards the 2020 USF2000 season. In 2012 Campbell began racing cadet karts in the Southern California region, marking the start of his racing career. He graduated to the senior kart categories in 2016 where he began his climb up the Superkarts! USA Shifter Stock Moto ladder system. He progressed through the ranks before making his debut in the Pro Shifter category at the Superkarts! USA SuperNationals XXII in 2018. At the end of that year, he was one of 30 drivers invited to compete in the inaugural Cooper Tire Karting Scholarship Shootout held at Sebring International Raceway. A panel of well-accomplished figures in the motorsport industry selected him as the winner of the three-day judged event, for which he received a scholarship to run the full 2019 Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series calendar. Prescott broke his femur in a karting accident mid-season, but was able to come back to win the championship despite missing three of the series 18 races. An impressive drive in the season finale saw him clinch the title by a crucial four points and win the $75,000 scholarship towards this years USF2000 season. I had the pleasure of catching up with Sabré Cook just before she jetted off to England for the pre-season obligations that she has for the upcoming 2020 W-Series. One thing that I constantly marvel at with regard to these up and coming racers is the way that they have to juggle their racing careers with their other obligations, whether it be working, school, or in the case of Sabré, competing on two series all over the world.  Sabré Cook is set to compete in six events in the Indy Pro 2000 Series on the Road to Indy. Cook will see action March 12-14 on the Streets of St. Petersburg, April 23-26 at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, May 7-9 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the Grand Prix weekend, Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin over the June 19-21 weekend as well as the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca August 14-16 and September 18-20. https://youtu.be/xS-KpJLxhfg I'm very excited to rejoin Team Benik and my Road to Indy campaign, expressed Sabré Cook. I think supplementing my second season in W Series competition with another great open wheel series like the Indy Pro 2000 Championship will only accelerate my development as a driver. Benik, my partners, and I have been working very hard to make a feasible program for this season, and I really appreciate everyone's efforts to make this happen. Sabré Cook During this episode, we get a chance to talk about how Sabré got into racing and the challenges that she has faced along the way. That is a great question. The current Simulation systems on the market do not have the specific cars that are used in the Road to Indy's 3 main series. This leaves drivers having to use other models of cars as a substitute. That will change at the track atleast. I sat down with Greg De Giorgis, Owner and Lead Engineer for SimMetric Driver Performance Labs. Greg has developed a commercial-grade driving simulator in a custom-built, first-of-its-kind mobile coaching lab, that gives drivers more track time in order to gain an advantage over their competitors in a safe, controlled environment.  The system is loaded with the specific car models used by the USF2000 Indy Pro 2000 & Indy Lights series. What does the winner of the 2019 F3 Americas Championship do for an encore? How about claiming a podium finish in the 1st race of 2020 in the IMSA Prototype Challenge at Daytona International Raceway. I had the pleasure of catching up with Dakota Dickerson, 2015 Team USA Scholarship winner, to discuss his great start to 2020 and his Indy Dreams. Dakota still dreams of the Indy 500 someday, but in the interim he is making the best of his partnership with Ligier and MLT Motorsports on the IMSA Circuit. https://youtu.be/ZEdnj8aIV0E To give some context, IMSA Prototype Challenge is a six-event endurance racing championship with two drivers sharing a car to race for either one hour 45 minutes or three hours. The championship requires that an FIA rated bronze driver (for example, my teammate Dean Baker) pairs up with an FIA rated silver driver (myself). We believe we?ve created a strong lineup for the year. Dean is an experienced prototype racer and competed against us in the 2019 season. Unlike the junior formula car championships that we had been competing in, Prototype Challenge allows different manufacturers to compete in the same class. We all have the same tires, engine and transmission but we can choose between chassis manufacturers. We will be competing in the Ligier JSP3 which is a very nice continuation of our relationship and success with Ligier in the F4 US Championship (Ligier JSF4) and F3 Americas Championship (Ligier JSF3). The other popular chassis is the Norma M30 which typically yields great straight-line speed but lacks in aerodynamic grip relative to the Ligier. It creates great racing and a fun, competitive dynamic in the paddock between the two manufacturers.Dakota Dickerson MLT Motorsports was only formed less than one year ago, having made its debut at Sebring, so this year represented its first-ever visit to Daytona International Speedway the first week of January for the opening race of the new season. There was a lot of work involved but we made great progress during the three practice sessions, and both myself and Dean felt very comfortable in the car. The only real item up in the air was our aero settings. We knew we couldn?t compete with the Normas in a straight line, but with the impending rainy weather on race day, some extra aero seemed like our best bet to challenge for a win. Dean spent the final practice session prepping for qualifying and we all felt strong heading into Saturday. Dakota Dickerson Our next event will be at Sebring International Raceway during the ?Super Sebring? event in March. We will be working really hard as a team to continue improving, and I?m fully confident we will be able to challenge for another win there as well. None of this would be possible without the support and guidance of Dr. Mike Thompson, MLT Motorsports, Ligier Automotive NA and all of our personal partners. Likewise, I really appreciate you all for following my progress and I hope to have a ?winning? blog for all of you come March. Kiss the Bricks is Kaehler's 5th book and it takes place during the month of May leading up to and including the Indy 500. Tammy's book is not just an edge of the seat mystery story. It also explains some aspects of racing in detail that all can understand, race fan or not. She also explores the challenges faced by her character, Kate Reilly, as she is a female racer facing barriers that are not just on the track. During this interview we talk about the book, Tammy's path to racing and about challenges faced by women in racing in 2020. I hope you enjoy and would love your feedback and comments. It is my intention that this interview is the first of many in a series on women in racing and why there are so few opportunities for female drivers. Here you go, Episode 21: Robert Earl: Welcome back to 33 Dreams of Indy. I'm your host, Robert Earl and today I'm joined by Tammy Kaehler. Tammy, how are you doing? Tammy Kaehler: I'm good, thanks. How about you? Robert Earl: I'm doing fantastic. Tammy is a mystery novelist. Her books have followed the adventures and career of a fictional Kate Riley as she pursues her dreams of Indy in her racing career. And I got my hands on her fifth entry, Kiss the Bricks, and matter of fact spilled coffee on it, and had to actually get it on Kindle as well, because I could not put it down. But this is the fifth in a series at Dead Man's Switch, where Kate follows her American Le Mans series as she starts out. Breaking Points, which is set at Road America and Petite Le Mans. Avoidable Contact, you jump into the 24 hours at Daytona, I'll be there here in a just a couple of weeks. And then Red Flags, where she participates at the Long Beach Grand Prix, but then also starts to test Indy cars and then is a? To set the stage, she's a full time participant on the IndyCar series and is successful in the Indy 500 when we enter into the story, correct? Tammy Kaehler: Yeah, that's correct. Robert Earl: Fantastic. Welcome to the show. Tammy Kaehler: Thank you. Robert Earl: How did you get into writing? Tammy Kaehler: I've always been a writer in my career. I started out in college admissions actually, strangely enough. But I gravitated to any of the writing or the publication tasks in that job. And then I had the good fortune to be hired as a technical writer by a manager who was looking for someone who wasn't actually technical, but could translate. And that sort of launched me into a tech writing career. I was very active writing websites and things for the web 1.0 version, when all of a sudden everyone needed a website and no one had anything. And I specialized in small technical companies. So I've continued that. I still do a lot of web content these days. Everyone needs web content, got to have content got to have content. So I do a lot of that kind of writing. Tammy Kaehler: But fiction didn't come along because I was not one of those kids scribbling stories or writing all the time. Never wrote fiction. I'd have told you I couldn't write fiction. Robert Earl: Really? Tammy Kaehler: Yeah. Yeah. Strange. I just didn't feel like I had that in me, but that came along in 2003 so it's been some years now. I woke up one morning with an idea, just this scene in my head that wouldn't go away. And I kept going, "That's weird, that doesn't happen to me, this is fiction." So I think I'm running into probably some of your other questions, but I'm just going to keep talking. I found a class actually near me at a very good independent bookstore that was called, Do You Have a Book in You? Because I figured that that was the question. Rejoins HMD Motorsports for 2020 "Team expands to three cars" Episode 17 - With the start of the 2020 race season still over four months away, HMD Motorsports continues to make strides on their growing program. With the move of the team to the Indianapolis, Indiana area and the hiring of an experienced staff, the team is happy to announce that David Malukas will be back for his sophomore Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires championship season. "We are very happy to have David back in 2020," explained Team Manager John Cummiskey. "2019 was a great learning year for David, and he was able to gather podium results in Austin as well as on the oval in St. Louis. Returning for 2020 with renewed focus, energy and experience by his side, David will be a contender for the series title as we head towards Laguna Seca next September."  Only 18 years of age, Malukas has been on a meteoric rise through the Road to Indy. Competing in only a handful of Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship events where he showed his speed right away, the Chicago, Illinois resident became a victor in the Indy Pro 2000 Championship in 2018 with a dominating event weekend at Road America and proved that was no fluke with a win in Portland. 2019 saw another step up in series to Indy Lights where he was an instant top-five runner and managed to find his way to the podium on two occasions.  "To say I was happy with my 2019 season would be a lie," added David Malukas. "I want to win, but also know that I was against a steep learning curve. I took each and every session, each and every lap and the highs and the lows of the season all in stride and gained experience along the way. The team made some big administrative changes behind the scenes and at least one of the HMD drivers were on the podium in the final five event weekends of the season so I am confident that 2020 will bring success." Malukas is set to take on the upcoming series test at the Sebring International Raceway December 11th and 12th in his final test before the holiday season.  https://youtu.be/oiqXz0hK5xs In other news, HMD Motorsports has added to the Indy Lights fleet expanding the quantity of cars from two to three, opening the path for another driver to compete in the upper tier of the Road to Indy. Currently, all HMD Motorsports USF2000 and Indy Pro 2000 equipment is for sale.  Please be sure to follow HMD Motorsports on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram by searching @HMDMotorsports and also stay tuned for the launch of a new team website. Episode 15 - Ayrton Ori has been on a journey since he started his racing career and the next step into the 2019 Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship has been no different. He is attacking this step with the same passion that he does when he is off the track with a message of possibilities and anti-bullying. As an Ambassador for the Human Growth Foundation, the young driver will take part in support events throughout the off season and into next year including the fourth annual 'Say No to Bullying Festival' in Los Angeles, California (www.saynobullying.org/festival). Featuring Disney Kids, health care professionals, growth hormone patients and more, Ayrton will represent the motorsports community as he gives back to the community.  "I have been taking Human Growth Hormone Replacement Therapy since the age of seven," explained Ori, who is a is a freshman at Lake Highland Preparatory School in Orlando. "I was so small that in karting, my dad had to carry my birth certificate around with us in order for me to compete. It was challenging but I am looking forward to sharing my journey, and in the beginning of that journey I did experience bullying." Ayrton Ori Ayrton is a fighter, and he is doing things that other kids his age have a distinct advantage in due to their size," added Keith Ori, father of Ayrton. "Bullying was something my son faced because he was initially so far below normal height; it was something we had to work through, and he's looking forward to sharing his experience and how he overcame it." Keith Ori One of the ways Ayrton learned to deal with bullying was through martial arts, taking eight years of Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and achieving the rank of green belt in an effort to build confidence. Ori continued, "Jiu Jitsu helped me a lot at that time of my life, but now that I've grown at a normal rate and I'm able to fight my own battles, I want to give back to the younger kids who suffer from bullying. I know first-hand what these kids are going through and will do whatever I can to help. It all starts ... at the Say No to Bullying Festival." Ayrton Ori As an Ambassador for the Human Growth Foundation (www.HGFound.org), Ayrton will be sharing his journey from the diagnosis of a partially functioning pituitary gland, his initially small stature, the bullying that came with it, how he dealt with it, and his maturation through a regimen of growth hormone replacement therapy which provides what his body should produce on its own, but does not.  https://youtu.be/nrybAoLhT4I This will not be the first occasion that Ayrton has been a public speaker in an ambassador type role; the young race car driver spoke to the youth of today about his experience in New Orleans in March and at the Kennedy Space Center just a few weeks ago.  To follow Ayrton Ori on Instagram, please find him at @ayrtonoriracing. Episode 9 Christian Rasmussen, Driver of the #6 Jay Howard Driver Development entry in the USF2000 Series on the Road to Indy joined The Earl from Orlando Florida following his weekend of racing at Portland International Raceway. Christian currently sits 5th in the season championship standings heading into the final two races of the campaign at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. We recap the two races in Portland which saw Rasmussen turn in a podium finish in race 1 after starting 5th and rally back from a tire issue in race 2 by setting fast lap of the race on lap 18. In 2018, Christian finished third in the F4 US Championship with the most victories by any driver during the year. He has followed up his stint in F4 with a strong showing in USF2000. Christian is backed by the Danish Federation and Dansk Metal and is excited to see what 2020 has in store for his racing career. He started in go-karts at the age of 5 in Denmark. It was a natural step considering that his father was involved in the automotive industry. We talk about the opportunities that he had in Europe and how he has made his racing budget stretch in the United States and how he enjoys living and competing stateside. Part of that allure stateside is the Indy 500. Christian got to experience the race first hand this year and it was a spectacle that he will never forget. https://youtu.be/RHpdMzHN5Hs Now that Christian has finished his business degree in Denmark he is dedicating more of his time towards racing and fitness and preparing himself for not only Laguna Seca, but the racing that is available after that race and heading into next season. Take away a few, as Christian put it, unlucky incidents during the 2019 USF2000 campaign and he would be right in the hunt for a season podium finish position of 3rd. Instead, he will have to focus on trying to catch Colin Kaminsky for 4th in the final 2 races. It will be interesting to see him make the progression through the Road to Indy ladder. I hope we see him in 2020 stateside, either in a USF2000 car competing for the season championship or progression to the Indy Pro 2000 or Indy Lights level. PS - In the interview, I talk about Lucas Oil Raceway - formerly known as IRP. I have the pleasure of seeing DAVE STEELE win at that track in his early days of racing. I also was fortunate enough to see him race and win in Richmond, VA, Maryland and at DeSota Speedway in Florida on the same track that his lost his life on 4 months after I saw him. Dave was always fast. Kory is an engaging driver on the Road to Indy Series. I caught up with Kory from his condo in Austin, TX. During this interview, we recap his weekend with DEForce Racing in Portland that saw him finish 11th and 10th in the two weekend races. We reflect on Kory's podium finish on the oval at Gateway and the emotions that went along with that experience and how a driver works to recreate that feeling outside of the car. We also look ahead to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and discuss how Kory uses the iRacing Simulator to familiarize himself with the new track. Setting the right expectations entering the weekend has been something that he has been working on, especially after the weekend experience of testing and competing at Gateway. I ask Kory about his interest off of the track including his passion for chess and how the mindset of chess can be applied to racing. https://en.chessbase.com/post/what-chess-can-learn-from-racing. Kory also talks about his plans beyond the current season including a LMP3 test session along with races coming up in Mexico and Austin along with his upcoming track days in support of his sponsors - Mercedes Benz of Sugarland and McLaren of Houston. Have a question for Kory Enders? Post a comment or post a tweet with the hashtag #AsktheEarl or #33Dreams and I will consider it for our next episode. https://youtu.be/8j35Hc1uwh0
