Comment on the show?..send me a text!Welcome back to The Lone Road iRacers Podcast! I'm Guy Robertson, and today, we're diving into one of North America's underrated gems—Portland International Raceway. This track might not have the international prestige of Suzuka or Spa, but for those who know, it's a fantastic venue packed with history, technical challenges, and some intense racing. So, let's buckle up and hit the virtual asphalt!Portland International Raceway has been a key venue in American motorsport for decades, but it often flies under the radar. Unlike many historic tracks, it doesn't boast a long F1 or endurance racing pedigree, but what it does have is a reputation for producing tight, action-packed racing. The mix of high-speed sections and technical corners makes it an excellent proving ground for both real-world and sim racers. In today's episode, we'll break down the history of PIR, the layout, racing strategies, and how to maximize your performance in iRacing. Whether you're an experienced sim racer or someone looking to expand their track knowledge, this episode will help you appreciate why Portland is such a beloved track in the racing community. We also catch up with round 3 of this season PESC Result.E-mail: theloneroadiracerspodcast@gmail.com YouTube Videocast: https://youtu.be/nH7jXtDRJlkFacebook: Facebook Link: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61554966076972 10% off DRE link: 10% off DRE Link: https://getdre.app/loneiracerSupport the show

The 2024 ABB FIA Formula E world championship title fight was blown wide open at the expansive Portland International Raceway as Antonio Felix da Costa scored a remarkable double for Porsche. After scoring zero points in the first three races and having even his position in the Porsche team questioned, da Costa is now an outside bet to become a double Formula E champion in the most unlikely of scenarios. But realistically it's a scrap between Jaguar teammates Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy, as well as da Costa's teammate Pascal Wehrlein. Just 12 points separate them heading in to the final rounds at London ExCeL Arena in two week's time. Cassidy could and should have put the crown to bed in Portland but both Sam Smith and Andrew van de Burgt analyse how he managed to spin away his chances on the penultimate lap of Saturday's race. The controversial penalty that lost Mitch Evans the win is deep-dived in to, as is the performances of Sunday polesitter Jean-Eric Vergne, Abt miracle maker Nico Mueller and a rejuvenated Robin Frijns from Envision. Next, they talk about Ross Chastain's bump and run move that took Denny Hamlin out of contention and Hamlin's retaliation throughout the rest of the race. The guys explain why Chastain can't afford to continue making enemies and react to Justin Marks' comments defending his driver. More drama continued into the next topic as they talk Ricky Stenhouse Jr. spinning Bubba Wallace while racing for what 23XI team owner Hamlin said was 30th. Freddie shares his displeasure with Stenhouse's aggression and applauds Hamlin's retaliation shortly after the incident. Carson Hocevar was injured in a last-lap wreck in the Truck Series race at Gateway. The guys discuss the safety crew's response time and break down how long it took for the safety team to reach the accident. Plus, debate whether Hocevar should have left his window net up. Stewart-Haas Racing's Brian Murphy tweeted about being curtailed from tweeting his thoughts and opinions about the sport. First hear about the Dirty Mo Media Ultimate Suite Experience at Charlotte and what story Freddie told. Also learn about producer Jason Schultz's time at the Indy 500. Before jumping into spot on, spot off; the gang reacts to the news that Phoenix Raceway will continue to hold the championship race next season and what they want to see happen with the event moving forward. First up in Spot On, Spot Off, Chase Briscoe's attempt to pass Kyle Larson with 2 laps to go ended with him spinning out. The guys talk about Briscoe needing to capitalize on these moments and his progress this season. Austin Dillon's team applauded his attempt to pass for the lead which caused a big pile-up in overtime. The gang discusses how he put himself in the right spot to make the winning move but ultimately couldn't hang on. Next, Chris Buescher said he was okay after flipping in a wreck on the frontstretch but safety crews took over five minutes to flip him back over. The guys debate whether or not they had a problem with how long it took to flip the No. 17 over and if there's a better way to do it. The Indy 500 was red-flagged to set up a two-lap green flag finish and the guys react to fourth-place finisher Felix Rosenqvist's comments regarding the decision. They talk about the fans deserving to have the race finish under green, plus Jimmie Johnson winning the Indy 500 Rooke of the Race. Kaulig Racing and StormX, the leading Crypto Cashback app and Chrome extension have joined forces for five NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) races starting with the Alsco Uniforms 300 this weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The team announced earlier this year that as part of Voyager Digital's primary partnership, it would be teaming up with the Crypto Cashback platform StormX to raise awareness and drive cryptocurrency inclusion for all. As part of this, Landon Cassill, who has been a long-time crypto advocate, will be racing his No.10 Chevrolet, fully branded with the StormX logo and colors.NASCAR has seen a new wave of crypto partnerships established for the 2022 season, and this movement can be attributed to Cassill's affinity and knowledge of crypto. “My family and I make the majority of our purchases online, which is why the crypto cashback rewards with StormX are perfect for us,” said Cassill. “Travel is a huge chunk of my spending, as are hotels, so being able to receive cashback paid in crypto is a huge win, even more so when I factor in my membership bonuses.”“Landon is no stranger to crypto, it was apparent from our first conversations that for him, it wasn't about jumping on a bandwagon, but was about the potential it has to revolutionize the way we view personal finance,” said Matthew Chuen, CMO at StormX. “We are excited to be driving crypto inclusion with Landon and the team at Kaulig, and can't wait to see him sporting the StormX logo on the track”After two races in the 2022 NXS season under his belt, Cassill and the No.10 Kaulig Racing team will continue their west coast swing this weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.“Landon (Cassill) is so knowledgeable about crypto and its platforms and the fact that he wants to share his expertise with NASCAR fans by bringing crypto-based partners on board at Kaulig Racing is very exciting”, said Kaulig Racing president, Chris Rice. “I for one am intrigued by the crypto industry and look forward to learning more.”Prior to Cassill and StormX's partnership at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on March 5th for the Alsco Uniforms 300, Cassil is also taking part in StormX's first ever invitation-only poker tournament at PokerGO's Studio in Las Vegas, on March 3rd. Landon will join an 81-person strong line-up battling crypto founders, NBA players and poker pros to win a share of the $405k minimum prize pool. As part of the new partnership, StormX will be the primary partner of the No.10 Chevy at four additional events during the 2022 NXS season at Dover International Speedway, Portland International Raceway, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course, and Martinsville Speedway.About Kaulig Racing™Kaulig Racing™ is a full-time multi-car NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) and NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) team, owned by award winning entrepreneur, Matt Kaulig. In 1989, Geoff Brabham could do no wrong in IMSA. His Nissan/ Electramotive Engineering GTP ZX-T #83 was one of the best sports cars ever made, and his team had figured out how to make it more reliable. They were finally getting the most out of this spectacular machine. However, at the race in July at Portland International Raceway, Brabham had some difficulty getting around Jan Lammers and Price Cobb, drivers of the Tom Walkinshaw Racing Jaguar XJR-10 #60. It was a great battle between two fantastic drivers, and the race ended with a tremendous pass for the lead on the penultimate lap. Unfortunately, there was a problem...the checkered flag had already been waved, accidentally, by the local race official manning the start finish line. IMSA's solution, and the implications of that decision, are what we explore today, along with one of the most glorious times in sportscar racing history in America. That's all today on Stagger! Hello Fellow Racing Ear Enthusiasts,I had the great pleasure of chatting with Bob and Becky Pengraph for Episode 9 of The Racing Ear Podcast. At the time of this interview the Classic Sports Racing Group first event of the year, the David Love Vintage Races, was 2 weeks out to be held at Sonoma Raceway April 9-11 2021. I wanted to chat with Bob and Becky about how and why they do what they do for this vintage racing organization. Bob and Becky live in Canby Oregon and are frequent visitors to Portland International Raceway in Portland Oregon and at Pacific Raceway in Kent Washington. Becky Pengraph has been involved with the Sports Car Club of America for over 20 years. I first met her down in the hot pits at Sonoma Raceway during the CSRG events as she was directing race traffic, making sure that racing cars and drivers are in safety compliance, saying hello and giving hugs, and sharing her homemade beaded necklaces. Bob Pengraph is the Media Chief for the CSRG and has bestowed media credentials to me in the past for me to cover previous CSRG events starting back in 2016 for my website TheRacingEar.com on YouTube. He has extensive experience being a racing photographer for the ChampCar World Series and the American Le Mans Series and is a consistent contributor to Victory Lane Magazine. Bob and Becky are amazing and dedicated racing friends and colleagues. On this week’s Speed Secret Podcast, Cathy McCause Fuss joins me to talk about why she got involved with running a race series, how to make a series popular, how to make endurance racing safe, her sponsors (Hankook and Hawk brakes), and giving back through charitable events. She shares about Lucky Dog races and Heroes Motorsports race teams for veterans. Cathy’s speed secret: Be able to see! Cathy has been involved in endurance racing since driving in the very first Lemons races at Altamont Motorsports Park, then co-founding ChumpCar & being their executive VP for 6 years, partnering with my Chump colleague Joey Todd at WRL when we started Lucky Dog. All this after leaving 25 years in software, most recently as VP Global Marketing for Oracle Utilities. As North America’s fasting growing grassroots endurance series boasting over 600 teams & 3,000 drivers, Lucky Dog Racing League host events at bucket list track such as at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, Charlotte Motor Speedway, Sonoma Raceway, Willow Springs International Raceway, Utah Motorsports Park, The Ridge Motorsports Park, Buttonwillow Raceway, Pacific Raceways, Thunderhill Raceway Park, Oregon Raceway Park, Portland International Raceway, Spokane County Raceway, Chuckwalla Valley Raceway, Canada’s exclusive Area 27 and the Wild Dogs Ensenada Grand Prix on the streets of Ensenada, Baja, Mexico. Episode 9 Christian Rasmussen, Driver of the #6 Jay Howard Driver Development entry in the USF2000 Series on the Road to Indy joined The Earl from Orlando Florida following his weekend of racing at Portland International Raceway. Christian currently sits 5th in the season championship standings heading into the final two races of the campaign at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. We recap the two races in Portland which saw Rasmussen turn in a podium finish in race 1 after starting 5th and rally back from a tire issue in race 2 by setting fast lap of the race on lap 18. In 2018, Christian finished third in the F4 US Championship with the most victories by any driver during the year. He has followed up his stint in F4 with a strong showing in USF2000. Christian is backed by the Danish Federation and Dansk Metal and is excited to see what 2020 has in store for his racing career. He started in go-karts at the age of 5 in Denmark. It was a natural step considering that his father was involved in the automotive industry. We talk about the opportunities that he had in Europe and how he has made his racing budget stretch in the United States and how he enjoys living and competing stateside. Part of that allure stateside is the Indy 500. Christian got to experience the race first hand this year and it was a spectacle that he will never forget. https://youtu.be/RHpdMzHN5Hs Now that Christian has finished his business degree in Denmark he is dedicating more of his time towards racing and fitness and preparing himself for not only Laguna Seca, but the racing that is available after that race and heading into next season. Take away a few, as Christian put it, unlucky incidents during the 2019 USF2000 campaign and he would be right in the hunt for a season podium finish position of 3rd. Instead, he will have to focus on trying to catch Colin Kaminsky for 4th in the final 2 races. It will be interesting to see him make the progression through the Road to Indy ladder. I hope we see him in 2020 stateside, either in a USF2000 car competing for the season championship or progression to the Indy Pro 2000 or Indy Lights level. PS - In the interview, I talk about Lucas Oil Raceway - formerly known as IRP. I have the pleasure of seeing DAVE STEELE win at that track in his early days of racing. I also was fortunate enough to see him race and win in Richmond, VA, Maryland and at DeSota Speedway in Florida on the same track that his lost his life on 4 months after I saw him. Dave was always fast. If you would like to find out more about DAVE (I apologize for his name slipping my mind) then I encourage you to visit this site: http://www.steeleperformance.com/davesteele.html

Episode 7 - A conversation with Colin Kaminsky - Driver of the #23 Pabst Racing - Slick Locks entry in the USF2000 Series presented by Cooper Tires. I caught up with Colin after he had finished a full week of classes at the University of Pittsburgh where he is studying Business Administration. Kaminsky currently sits 4th in the USF2000 season standings after posting two solid 4th place finishes at Portland International Raceway. We talk about the race weekend at Portland. The season points championship and we look ahead to the challenge of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Colin has to be ready for the last two races of the season as he finds himself just 4 points out of 3rd place, only trailing Darren Keane in the standings. While he looks to challenge Keane, he also has to be aware of Christian Rasmussen that is right on his heels, just 12 points behind. After finishing 10th in the 2018 standings, Kaminsky has shown great improvement this season running for Pabst Racing. His teammate, Hunter McElrea is currently leading the points by 6 points and we talk about having Hunter as a teammate and the challenge presented by chasing a successful team like Cape Motorsports. I think you will find Colin to be as engaging as I did. We also touch upon the challenges of balancing racing with college classes and time management. We even through in a little hockey talk as Colin is a High School and College hockey goaltender. Thankfully he is a Chicago Blackhawks fan and has not started rooting for the Penguins yet, even though he is in Pittsburgh for school. Hockey talk lets me brag on Russian Machine Never Breaks - one of the inspirations for 33 Dreams of Indy. And speaking of Chicago, we also talk about our share love for Portillos. I hope you enjoy this episode. I look forward to catching up with Colin after Laguna Seca and throughout the offseason as he prepares to make a run for the USF2000 Championship in 2020. Have a question for Colin Kaminsky? Post a comment of post a tweet with the hashtag #AsktheEarl or #33Dreams and I will consider it for our next episode. Did you know? The 2029 Indy 500 will be held on Colin Kaminsky's Birthday - May 27th. Wouldn't that be one hell of a story if he won the race on his birthday? That what the 33 Dreams of Indy are all about. https://youtu.be/ujrQBCalT_Y

USF2000 presented by Cooper Tire is part of the Road to Indy Program. If the NTT IndyCar Series is the major leagues, then the USF2000 is the Single-A level of the minor leagues. Portland International Raceway will host 2 Races - Races 12/13 of the 15 total for the season. This will be the first race for USF2000 since Since Mid Ohio. These cars and drivers did not run the ovals at Pocono or Gateway. You can imagine that there will be alot of nervous, pent up energy for these young men and women as they take on the 1.964 mile - 12 turn road course. Luckily - 3 Test Sessions on Thursday With a Practice and Qualifying for Race 1 on Friday Qualifying for Race 2 on Saturday before they take to the race Sunday's race will follow the NTT Indycar Series race These cars run an average near 99mph on the PIR course. Not surprising that the race record is held by Indy Pro 2000 star Kyle Kirkwood and the Qualification record is held by Rasmus Lindh, the Indy Pro 2000 points leader. 3 New Drivers will be in the field for the Portland Races. 20-year-old Portland, Oregon resident Kyle Dupell will be in the #73 Newman Wachs Racing car joining Nolan Seigel. NWR currently sits 7th in the Team Championship. Legacy Autosport sits 6th in the Team Championship and they will add Aryton Ori to the #77 car, teaming with Zach Holden. Aryton just turned 15 and will be an Incoming Freshman in High School in Orlando Florida. Josh Green from NY will get his chance to shine for the 4th place Jay Howard Driver Development Team. Josh is currently 2nd in the US F1600 class and will be teaming with Christian Bogle and Christian Rasmussen. This will bring the total to 27 drivers that have competed in the USF2000 series in 2019. Lots of Dreams of making it someday into the field of 33 for the Indy 500. That is what the Road to Indy is all about. Lets Turn to the Championship. The winner will get an over $300k advancement to compete next year in the Indy Pro 2000 series so a lot is on the line. Braden Eves Leads Hunter McElrea by 9 points heading into Portland. McElrea carries the momentum as he finished on the podium for Race 1 at Mid Ohio and Lead Wire to Wire in Race 2. Eves finished 8th and 7th in Mid Ohio so he will be looking for a better weekend in the Rose City. Darren Keane sits in 3rd with 207 points followed by Colin Kaminsky in 4th at 199 points. Race 1 winner at Mid Ohio, Christian Rasmussen rounds out the top 5 with 198 points. I will be watching all of the race action on Saturday and Sunday on the Road to Indy TV app or online at RoadtoIndy.TV. https://youtu.be/9e5poKLSZd4

Alan, Jennifer, Vicki, and Bill with a few drop ins cover our race weekend with the Lucky Dog Series at Portland International Raceway. It starts with a review of practice Saturday morning, then our 7-hour endurance race Saturday and our work to get back out late Sunday. We compare Lucky Dog to our home series the 24 Hours of Lemons. While similar, there are differences, pluses and minuses for each, so we compare the two in the continual pursuit of the perfect low budget amateur endurance car racing. There were a ton of great teams there, most of which passed us on Saturday as we were towards the slower end of the field. We recorded this shortly after we completed Sunday so there is a bit of echo since we were in the pit. However, we did manage to give out our team awards for the weekend. Racing Results for those who are keeping track at home: Saturday: We were in 37th place when our engine went away Saturday and ended up at 41st for the day. We did not get to participate in the 2 Saturday endures due to the engine issue. Our fastest lap was 1:38.664 by our guest driver Randy Pobst, but we managed to 1:45.870 as our internal team best. (Randy was able to get to 48th fastest lap of the day and Alan’s time would have placed us as the second slowest car in the 60 car field that ran a lap Saturday ) Sunday: We ended up getting on track after a long day of engine swapping and rebuilding and finished 3 laps and ended up finishing around 48th out of the 64 cars this weekend and 48th fastest of the 48 cars that ran on Sunday. Fastest lap of the race weekend was 1:29.932 by Blue Bayou for reference to the relative performance to the field. We came, we saw, we were conquered.

Portland, Ore. – The US Grand Prix of Cyclocross made the last stop of the tour last weekend for the Stanley Portland Cup. Mostly dry ground was found Saturday at the Portland International Raceway but Sunday it poured, especially the hour before the Elite Women’s race. Katerina Nash took both Sunday’s race and the 2008 USGP Championship Trophy while local heroine Sue Butler was cheered to a third place finish and the Sram “Most Aggressive Female Rider” award. Ryan Trebon of Bend took that $250 prize home and won the day’s race. Tim Johnson claimed the series trophy. I took home a pair of very wet and muddy boots, some videotape, and inspiration for the song “Head Down”, which is the score for this video. Eric Todd Keeney provided additional footage. http://crankmychain.com http://usgpcyclocross.com http://erictoddkeeney.com
Portland, Oregon - Apparently the Halloween Races in Astoria was not enough insanity for this years Cross Crusaders. After some excellent traditional cyclocross racing at Portland International Raceway the bike-fun crowd went wild for single speed. Thousands of spectators watched as Sue Butler took away honors for the womens A racers and the prize for unofficial womens single speed world champion. Mens SSCXWC honors were awarded to Drew MacKenzie who hails from the Great White North. Prizes included a Vanilla SpeedVagen, a Pereira Cycles custom frame not to mention gold Speedos and required championship tatoos. Also, Raleigh Rainier frame went to the Sit-Up Champ. Special mention goes to Ryan Trebon of Bend who won the mens A race, and the regular single speed race. Trebon, a top cyclocross racer, was told he had to win all three races in order to take the SSCXWC. He may have been handicapped on the raceway, as well. The song Steam Powered was written especially for this race. Music and Video by Dan Kaufman for http://crankmychain.com and http://www.bobsredmill.com http://crosscrusade.com http://sscxwc.com

Report by Jonathan Maus of BikePortland.org PORTLAND, OR - Nearly 200 cyclists, well over twice the usual amount, joined city bike coordinator Roger Geller on his Bike Master Plan Ride last night. Riders of all stripes came out to show support for the embattled Master Plan, which Mayor Potter recently decided to cut from his proposed budget. As expected, Transportation Commissioner Sam Adams, flanked by his policy analyst Roland Chlapowski and his Chief of Staff Tom Miller, made an appearance. During interviews with the various media outlets he said, “I just think that this (the Bike Master Plan) is more important than some of the other items proposed in the Mayor’s proposed budget…It’s absolutely critical that we continue to be a leader in bike mobility and that comes by having a good plan…Bikes have never been more important to the mobility of this city. It’s an affordable way to get around; in some cases, it’s the most reliable way to get between two places; it’s good for your health; you burn fat instead of oil; and it’s good for the environment. The Bike Master Plan allows us to develop a bike system, not just do it piecemeal, but develop a system…As transportation commissioner I have a responsibility to get people around the city safely and bikes are a key part of my strategy. I think you can argue that we don’t spend enough money on bikes, not that we need to cut back on our spending.” After Adams’ remarks and brief words from Roger Geller, the ride began amid the chaotic cacophony of May Day Parade revelers, which passed by Terry Schrunk Plaza right as we rolled out. After a quick loop around the South Park Blocks, we made our way over the Willamette River (via the Hawthorne Bridge), up the Eastbank Esplanade, and onward through North Portland. As we made our way to our destination (Kenton Park), we experienced a diverse array of bikeways and environments; Bike Master Plan Ride #4 * We rode through the innovative, bike-only “scramble” signal near the Rose Garden Arena, * worked the sometimes tricky connection from Weidler to N. Williams, * enjoyed the serenity of residential streets near N. Ainsworth, * got a first-hand look at the new bike/ped refuge medias at N. Portland and Willamette Blvd., * shared a narrow bike lane with fast-moving motorists on N. Willamette near the University of Portland, * basked in the bucolic splendor and spring time aromas of the Peninsula Crossing Trail, * pedaled over the bike/ped bridge over the Columbia Slough, Bike Master Plan Ride #4 * rode next to nature along the Columbia Slough Trail while huge packs of lycra-clad racers careened through corners at Portland International Raceway, * and finally, we passed by Paul Bunyan at the entrance to up-and-coming Kenton. I talked to several people on the ride (unfortunately I can’t use the audio due to excessive wind noise), and they all expressed a deep concern about the Mayor’s decision to cut funding for the plan. Dave Sohigian was there with his wife and two kids. They live in Lair Hill, just south of Portland and as a carfree family, the continued improvement of Portland’s bikeway network is very important to them. Another women I spoke to said she moved to Portland (from Ohio) in large part because of it’s bike-friendly reputation and she wants to see that continue. Shamus Lynskey of St. Johns towed his young daughter along and said he has a vested interest in improving bikeway connections from that area to downtown. BTA volunteer Lee Hoffman lives in Tanasbourne and came out to show his support for the Master Plan. Once at Kenton Park, we re-assembled, filled out comment forms had a Q and A session with Roger Geller. It was a constructive, informative discussion that brought up a wide range of topics; from the potential of a bike-only lane on the Hawthorne Bridge (Geller said bikes were 16% of the total trips last summer), to problems with the new bike/ped refuge island at N. Willamette and Portland. It was inspiring to see both the large showing of support for the Bike Master Plan, and the high level of concern and engagement for improving the bikeway network.
