This month we continue our Motorsports series by going into a semi-deeper dive into the world of karting with Mikey B. We learn a bit about him and the work he does at the kart track at Autobahn Country Club as well as how he got to where he is today. From being a young amateur mechanic working with Mario to running the kart track garage and being the go-to guy for anything kart related. We get to learn about some of the more difficult experiences in this side of motorsports as well as some of the more fun aspects. Thanks for tuning in! During the waning weeks of 2024, Hankook Tire invited Tire Review to Joliet, Illinois, just outside Chicago, to experience the Weatherflex GT. It's the company's newest all-weather tire offering. For this Hankook Weatherflex GT review, we took to the track at the Autobahn Country Club, taking several laps with professional racing instructors offering guidance.Key Specifications of the Hankook Weatherflex GT All-Weather TireBefore diving into performance, let's review Hankook's Weatherflex GT specifications. The Weatherflex GT comes in 37 sizes, from 15 to 22 inches. Hankook backs it with a 70,000-mile treadwear warranty. It also has the three-peak mountain snowflake designation for handling snow and ice. Hankook says it designed the tread pattern to deliver excellent winter performance. High-density sipes in the grooves enhance traction in snow. The sipes in the center and shoulder blocks helps to improve performance on snowy roads. Wide lateral grooves channel water away efficiently, reducing hydroplaning.Wet Weather Performance and Hydroplaning MitigationThe zig-zagged grooves improve cornering grip by engaging the road at various angles. This design ensures drivers maintain control. The tire's “3D GripKontrol Sipes” minimize block deformation. Better block stiffness leads to improved handling in wet and dry conditions, and we had the opportunity to experience this for ourselves on the track. Wide lateral grooves channel water away efficiently, reducing hydroplaning. This keeps the driver in control during rainy conditions.Comfort Features Built Into the Hankook Weatherflex GTTo test the Weatherflex GT on the track, I drove two vehicles equipped with these tires: a 2025 Honda Accord and a 2025 Honda Pilot. The weather varied greatly during the test. A sunny, mild day turned overcast, windy, and drizzly. These conditions were perfect for testing this tire. The quiet ride stood out while reviewing this tire. Hankook says its engineers prioritized reducing road noise using strategically positioned tread blocks. The company optimized the block arrangement to minimize vibrations. Poorly positioned tread blocks generate unpleasant sounds, similar to clashing musical notes. Hankook harmonized these “notes” by varying block sizes and aligning them properly. This creates a quieter, more comfortable ride. The tire's “3D GripKontrol Sipes” minimize block deformation.Introducing the Hankook Weatherflex GT to the LineupHankook organizes its tires into families. These include the Kinergy, Ventus, and iON lines. The Weatherflex GT introduces a new family line. Tire Review spoke with Rob Nasca, Hankook's Product and Marketing Training Manager, about the decision to introduce a new line. He explained the vision for the Weatherflex GT. "Consumers are looking at the market as a whole, and we've noticed that the snow accumulations actually decreased," Nasca said. "It's still getting cold out there in the wintertime, but there isn't as much snow. So, we've [responded] by having an all-weather tire that's going to be like an all-season, but have that three-peak mountain snowflake symbol. It's also going to be more cost-saving, because now the consumer doesn't have to buy a summer and a winter tire."Asymmetrical Tread DesignThere is one key feature of the Weatherflex GT that deserves extra attention: Its asymmetrical tread pattern. This design differs from the tread pattern of the Kinergy 4S2 – another all-weather tire in Hankook's line-up. The asymmetrical pattern allows rotation between the driver's and passenger's sides. This prevents irregular wear. Rotating directional tires similarly could cause performance issues. Hankook says its engineers prioritized reducing road noise using strategically positioned tread blocks.Tire Review: www.tirereview.comHunter Engineering Company: www.hunter.com

Drivers Start your Engines. Only one lap since our last show. The Podcast is always excited to get more time on the track We have a massive grid for July at the Autobahn Country Club. Kyle Nadeau and Ben Hasbrouck drift onto the show and drop the green flag on everything July at the club. Please come out and get behind the wheel of a kart, car, dirt bike, utv, or a rally car during the month. Now is the month to put the peddle to the metal on track time, go wheel to wheel at the clubhouse, or hit the apex with some new driving coaching. Yes July is a great month at the track. Don't let the checkered flag fall without getting everything out of the month of July at the Autobahn Country Club. Also remember that just last week our last show went around the track with John Harkenrider from HAVOC Motorsports. We don't want you to get lap by another great podcast . So please make sure you are staying in close and bump drafting as we call the green flag. Have an idea for a show? YES. Let's go open wheel racing. Ever dreamed of getting behind an open wheel car like an Indy car or F1 car. Well, I sure have. John Harkenrider from Havoc Motorsports joins the show to cover everything open wheel. And this show sure has me longing for a chance to prove that I too could be an Indy car driver I just need to get started at the Autobahn Country Club with a Pro Mazda or Formula Mazda or will how about a Indy Light. We cover everything about how to get a car, how to get coaching learning to drive a 1400lbs 260HP beast in a Pro Mazda and then how to continue to keep it running. As always I am excited about each of our guests and this show is no different. Well, it is a little different because we have never done a deep dive into open wheel cars until now. Join me in welcoming John Harkenrider from Havoc Motosports on the Autobahn Country Club Podcast.

Welcome to the show, I am super excited about this darn good show! Sean Varwig is a fantastic race car driver! I could end the intro right there but there is more. He is not only a great driver but a warm and friendly person. He is always carrying a smile and makes everyone around him feel well, better. Did I mention that he is young? Yep, only 18 years old and already is able to make everyone around him have a better day. I also want to mention our kart racers. Every year a traveling race series comes to the track racing the same spec karts that we race. The competition is ferocious! We have had some podiums in the past but nothing like what took place the first weekend of June. We dominated. Autobahn Country Club drivers took every 1st place in 5 out of 6 races. What a performance. If you are interested in racing a kart the Autobahn Country Club has everything you need to get started and become a winning driver. Our winners were: Easton Kubinski (by 11 seconds over 2nd place both races) Samual Bowman and Mathew Miller. Not to mention that same weekend we have former kart racers racing and winning around the country.Don't know anything about kart racing but want more? Head over to https://kartcircuitautobahn.com for more info or https://autobahncc.comAnd now let's welcome Sean Varwig on the Autobahn Country Club Podcast. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/autobahn-country-club-podcast/id1358759189

Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights from this episode include: 1) Right off the bat, Bill mis-speaks during his joke, Herb vs Abe, my apologies. 2) Vicki goes over her track prep since this was her first time at this track. Luckily, the track is relatively flat and fairly easy to learn. Vicki's favorite section was the 8-9-10 turn complex. 3) We both shared the 2019 Mazda Miata (ND2) and Vicki was able to settle into the new track car. We also go over her impressions of the Garmin Catalyst which is especially useful at Autobahn since the track is relatively short and you get a lot of laps in each session. 4) Our car prep issues with the 2004 BMW M3 (E46) were quite a story. We thought we had our prep processes under control but found something else we can do wrong. And then it snowballed, lol. 5) Lifting on the long straightaways? Vicki had that problem. Emphasis on “had”. 6) How did the MSF Level 2 evaluation go for Bill? 7) What trailer does Vicki envy? ALOT. 8) Vicki was unintentionally “that guy”. Or was she? You can be the judge. 9) We also cover how Vicki's Instructor (Brandon) did vs the Garmin Catalyst? (Quite well) 10) Vicki (and Bill) had some major accomplishments during the weekend. Any guesses? 11) Some of the issues Bill had instructing at the event. 12) TREC Racing. Ever heard of it? We discuss it and we finally have a plan for this next season.
Mae and I talk through in-car footage of my High Performance Driving Event at Autobahn Country Club near Joliet Illinois. Autobahn is a member-only racetrack country club across several large cornfields from Chicagoland Speedway. Because members have the right to 1/2 the course every weekend, NASA decided to rent the track on a Federal Holiday Monday giving us a rare chance to run the full layout. I ran this event in the "Stinger" my 1996 Nissan 240SX with bolt-on mods, but full roll cage, racing seat and 5 point harness.
In this episode we talk with Mark Basso, Founder of Autobahn Country Club in Joliet IL.As you'll hear Mark always enjoyed sports that required a helmet and developed an idea that allowed car enthusiasts to enjoy their passion while including their families in the events and outings.Did you know that Joilet was the third site they worked with to get this concept off the ground? Talk about pushing forward on your goal and not letting "no" deter you!!We also talk about how a few members have grown from racing karts to now driving in IMSA events. Pretty cool!Bill and John don't really have any car project updates, but Bill talks about a very interesting find one of his techs had while performing an oil change.Learn more about Autobahn Country Club at : https://autobahncc.com/
Wow, episode two already! LOLBill & John head to Autobahn Country Club in early November. John brings his E46 M3 and Bill has his RX-7 which hasn't been on track for 10 years! The guys share project updates and recap the trip to Autobahn. Unfortunately, Bill gets a ride back to the garages. Thanks for listening!
After a recent HPDE event with NASA Great Lakes at the Autobahn Country Club near Chicago, Bill sent in some video of a representative lap to Racers360 to try their video coaching and see what he could work on to improve. Dion von Moltke, from Racers360 and a podcast guest from episode #92, evaluated one of Bill’s laps and who knew, it wasn't all that bad. We thought it would be a great discussion of the use of video and the added benefit of having a professional driver and coach review the video for you. Bill learned a great deal and every driver will. This is especially valuable to the two ends of the learning curve. The newer drivers will start off breaking any bad habits and the higher level drivers will finally have someone qualified, capable, and available who could help them refine the last few items to help shave the final few tenths to get closer to their potential. The cost (~$100) makes this an exceptional value to all drivers looking to improve. Ben and friends discuss the concept of weight transfer during the Dominating with Dawson segment. Whether conscious or subconscious, it is an underlying fundamental to high performance driving and managing this is key to getting the most you can out of a car and reducing lap times. You can email Dion directly at Dion@racers360.com And follow him on Instagram at or twitter @Dionvmr We hope you enjoy this episode! Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights from this episode include: The raw lap video a bit after 11:30 in: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Am-epQIjT4&t=758s A 5-minute snippet of Dion’s review of Bill’s lap can be seen at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iT2-NzD3o4Y Eric Meyer from NASA Great Lakes also discussed this lap from a data analysis perspective here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMtlsfwbSso 1) We review some of Dion’s racing accomplishments including his time as an IMSA driver, winning the 24 hours of Daytona and the 24 hours of Sebring twice and his current work with Racers360 that is aimed at all levels of amateur racing of cars, motorcycles, go karts, etc. 2) A discussion of NJMP’s Lightning track and its (obvious) nickname. Just look at the track map. 3) The advantages of personalized coaching and the feedback opportunities it opens up the coach and the driver. 4) Dion asks Bill to self-asses his driving strengths and weaknesses. This discussion was very short and very long, respectively. 5) The coaching consisted of not only the “what”, but the “why” as well as an estimate of the potential impact on lap times and safety that area involved. 6) A big discussion of Turn 9 and Turn 10 at Autobahn that applies to several other turn complexes that lead onto long straights where sometimes you sacrifice a turn and sometimes it is not the best choice. It appears that as in life, nothing is 100% all the time. 7) Turn 1 at Autobahn is a high speed right hand turn that Dion went into in general and also used as an example of how best to break down a turn (backwards) to determine what to do for a specific turn, especially if you are unfamiliar with the track or turn. 8) To the surprise of absolutely no one, we also discussed vision and the need to relax and look very “long” and “wide” with good scanning practices. 9) Dion is a fan of trying to work on one or two things at a time and not overwhelming the driver while learning. 10) Bill gives a brief description of the Garmin Catalyst and how it worked for him at Autobahn during his first weekend with the unit. 11) Dion gets (unfairly) put on the spot with looking at Jennifer’s crash at the Charlotte Roval. He agreed that is looks like a catch done well and a recovery not quite quick enough. Dion also recalls a time where he was able to catch a similar incident and save the car (with a bit of luck). It can be found at about 40-45 seconds into the video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPq5K1giAC8 12) Racers in training weight loss challenge is entered. Please let us know if you want to participate. Dion may even help despite not needing to lose any weight personally. 13) Bill looks to scoop up a few brownie points when the opportunity arises. 14) Some of the takeaways and how they apply to all laps and all tracks. Many are going to be incorporated into his practice session at the track and on the sim. 15) Bill vents his standard color matching issues. Still no traction received. 16) Track Addict may be worth some investigation and if your budget allows perhaps an AIM SmartyCam. 17) Bill drags Dion into his current level of overthinking the geometry of a turn. 18) Another vote for the Senna documentary. Maybe Vicki will finally watch it. It is really fantastic, even if you aren’t a race driver. 19) Post credits discussion of Mid-Ohio, with and without the chicane before the keyhole, and some volleyball discussion.
We cover Bill’s first HPDE 3 with NASA Great Lakes at the Autobahn Country Club South Course layout that is near Chicago. It was our teams first HPDE 3 and it was fantastic. NASA Great Lakes really shines with their HPDE curriculum. In addition, we had the opportunity to try the teams new Garmin Catalyst on track for the first time and we were very impressed. Several notable driving improvements were during the event and perhaps even a few Ahh Hah Moments. In addition, we discuss the “perfect” race car in the Dominating with Dawson segment for this episode. We hope you enjoy this episode half as much as Bill enjoyed the NASA Great Lakes event! Special thanks again to the entire Great Lakes team for running another top notch event, as always. Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights from this episode include: 1) A short track review of the South track at Autobahn. In addition, it was our first time on track with electronic flags. 2) We compare the relative costs of a track day weekend vs a divorce etc. 3) Differences between NASA Great Lakes HPDE 1, 2, and 3. 4) We cover some of the tremendous drills that start of most of the track sessions. They are very valuable to improve your driving skills and racing experience in a controlled and safe manner. 5) How NASA GL has altered the different HPDE levels and improved as they learn to account for COVID induced changes and still improve the quality of the instruction for each of their students in a very quick reaction, demonstrating their ability to respond nimbly to their students feedback. 6) Garmin Catalyst first impressions and review after using it to review our track driving for the first time this weekend. The in-car coaching was a very good addition to the weekend while we were in the car without an instructor. We hope to have a full episode with a guest in the next few weeks. We posted a few videos on our YouTube channel that has some of the Garmin instructions included if you are curious. 7) Bill is a big fan of the opportunities options that prioritize areas for potential improvement/low hanging fruit along with the potential quantified time improvement potential. 8) Jen asks the question Bill never wants to discuss with Vicki in earshot: How much is it? Vicki, close he webpage, just close the page. 9) Just remember, these are only $500 cars……… 10) Why does Bill always confuse Buddy Rich and Buddy Guy. No idea, but the model/example still applies. 11) Mork from Ork shows up for a small guest slot, some of you will see it. 12) Bad news on two of our GoPro’s. They may not be useful for our in-car video due to the dynamic range of brightness or contrast from within the car vs the outside. 13) The anniversary that never seems to end. 14) A very good discussion of focus and being fresh on track, as well as a probably wise decision to use good discretion and skip the last session at the end of Saturday. 15) Bill’s prep for a new track is getting better and almost where we would like it to be. The process we use during an HPDE is really getting dialed in and allowing us to get the most out of each stint and maximize the benefit for each HPDE we attend. 16) We cover some of the most significant improvements and a few Ahh Hah’s from the event. 17) The goal of HPDE 3 to push beyond your comfort level and look for more speed was very good and appropriate after the training received in HPDE 1 and 2 with NASA GL. 18) The go kart track looked amazing, although we did not have a chance to try. 19) Bill makes a play at adding another HPDE/track day for NJMP. Schedule tbd. Details to follow. He would really love to get Jennifer and Vicki out once more with the Catalyst. It should help them both greatly. Some planning details still to be resolved. 20) What is left to get Brad safely out the door and what is left to start the process of GHIT Colorado. Look for us to come out to High Plains raceway and other tracks in the area as soon as Brad is set up and ready for us. Also one last chance for Bill to pick on Brad for signing up for several HPDE’s and not
