PIT PASS INDY – SEASON 2, EPISODE 36 – Grand Prix of Portland Race Winner Scott McLaughlin, Jimmie Johnson and team Penske engineer Ben Bretzman   September 6, 2022 Just 41 points separate the top-five heading into Sunday's Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey. It's the closest championship battle since the 2003 Indy Racing League championship when 30 points separated the top five.  Team Penske's Will Power takes a 20-point lead into the season's final race after finishing second to this week's guest on Pit Pass Indy, Scott McLaughlin, in the Grand Prix of Portland on September 4. McLaughlin won the pole on Saturday and dominated the race on Sunday, leading 104 of the 110 laps in the race and defeating Power by 1.1792 seconds. McLaughlin took note of the fact that entering Portland 54 points out, he was overlooked in the battle for the title. But with his big win, he moved up to fourth in the standings, 41 points out, although he would need some help to win the championship. Maximum points available in an INDYCAR race other than the Indianapolis 500 is 50 for the win, one point for the pole, one point for leading a lap and two points for leading the most laps. Power can clinch his second NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship Sunday if he finishes third or higher in the Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey. This week's Pit Pass Indy features two interviews with McLaughlin. Other guests include seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson who drives the No. 48 Carvana/American Legion Honda for Chip Ganassi Racing. Also, McLaughlin's race engineer, Ben Bretzman, joins us after the big win at Portland. Bruce Martin and Pit Pass Indy have all the storylines covered in this week's episode. January 4, 2021 It's Season No. 2 in 2022 for Pit Pass Indy as we speed ahead into the new year of IndyCar action. Our special guest in the first episode of Season 2 is celebrating the 25th Anniversary of his INDYCAR SERIES championship. It's 1997 Indy Racing League champion Tony Stewart. Before he went on to win three NASCAR Cup Series championships and become a Cup Series championship owner with Kevin Harvick in 2014, Stewart was an Indy car racing star. In 1995, Stewart became the first driver in history to win all three United States Auto Club (USAC) National Championships in the same season when he won the Midget, Sprint, and Silver Crown series. That made him the perfect fit for a step up to the new Indy Racing League in 1996 as the original goal of that series was to promote grass roots, oval track drivers from the United States. Stewart won the Indy Racing League championship in a 10-race season in 1997 that also included his first career INDYCAR victory at Pikes Peak International Raceway that season. He won two-more INDYCAR contests in 1998 with victories at Disney World and New Hampshire that season. Stewart finished third in the standings that year with Kenny Brack winning the championship and Davey Hamilton second.  Stewart traded in his Indy car for a NASCAR Cup Series car in 1999, setting a then-rookie record with three wins his first season. Stewart won Cup Series titles in 2002, 2006 and 2011. He retired from Cup Series racing as a driver following the 2016 season with 49 career wins. Stewart remains as one of NASCAR's top Cup Series team owners and this year, started an NHRA drag racing team for his wife, Leah Pruett. He also owns one of the top grass roots operations in racing, Tony Stewart Racing. Stewart continues to drive race cars around the country in various divisions at the grass-roots level. Pit Pass Indy show host Bruce Martin interviewed Stewart at the famed “Yard of Bricks” at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on December 10, 2021. The starting grid is set for the 105th running of the Indianapolis 500 this Sunday, and what better way to get ready than with a look back at the divisive battle between two competing sanctioning bodies that almost decimated the sport of open-wheel IndyCar racing - and even "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" itself. Veteran motorsports reporter John Oreovicz ("Indy Split: The Big-Money Battle That Nearly Destroyed Indy Racing") joins the podcast to help us better understand the political infighting that has plagued the sport since the late 1970s - most notably the schismatic 12-year "split" from 1996-2007 between CART (Championship Auto Racing Teams) and the Indy Racing League - the lingering effects of which still threaten to undermine the sport's future. At the heart of all of it has been the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway - open-wheel's undisputed center of gravity for more than a century - and now, along with a recombined IndyCar Series, boasts new ownership (racing industry legend Roger Penske) that aims to again harmonize the sport into a viable and vibrant future.

Even three-time Indianapolis 500 pole winner Ed Carpenter was once told his dreams were too big. “One of the first assignments we had was to write a five-year success plan,” Ed says of his time at Butler University’s Andre B. Lacy School of Business. “I obviously wrote a paper largely based around my racing career, and kind of tied in my time at Butler and how I was there to complement that as kind of a plan B. … [The professor] told me that it was nice to have dreams, but you need to be more realistic.” On this episode of Human Resolve, host Mark Minner speaks with Ed about how he went from a rookie to eventually co-owning his own race team, Ed Carpenter Racing, and why naysayers only motivated him to work harder to achieve his goals. Ed also shares what he’s learned as the leader of a 40-person team, including the importance of compassion, transparency and a clear mission shared by all employees. He describes how, in the small community that is IndyCar racing, it’s extra important to show respect for your competitors. After the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, Ed is extra grateful for a team that knows how to think on its feet and adapt. “I'd like to think that's one of the skill sets that we're very good at — just being able to deal with change and drama and unforeseen circumstances,” he says. “But I don't think anyone was prepared for what we went through last year. Fortunately, we were able to keep our people on through the whole time.”Featured LeaderName: Ed CarpenterTitle: Co-owner of Ed Carpenter Racing Company: Ed Carpenter Racing Noteworthy: Ed didn’t start racing until his mom remarried and suddenly he became the stepson of Indy Racing League founder Tony George.Where to find Ed: LinkedInHuman Resolve Episode 10 HighlightsHighlights from the transcript.

The Indy Racing League's season finale was meant to take place on Sunday, September 16. Rescheduled for October 6, the Chevy 500 at Texas Motor Speedway was a somber affair, as were most sporting events in the weeks that followed the attacks of Tuesday, September 11, 2001. In some ways, the feel of sports taking a back seat to the needs of the world isn't too far removed from what we're experiencing today with the coronavirus. NASCAR's Brickyard 400 drew a crowd of 275,000 people when it debuted at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1994. And it came at a great time, as then-Speedway President Tony George created the Indy Racing League, which depressed Indy 500 interest for years.  But fast forward 25 years and the Brickyard 400 is facing its own issues. Last year, only about 70,000 people attended the race — although it did turn a profit. Host Mason King interviews IMS President Doug Boles about the track's efforts to turn the race around — including moving it to a cooler date and adding a dirt-track race. In order to achieve storytelling marketing success, CMOs have to be willing to take risks. Even with all of the data and metrics available to evaluate, sometimes the best ideas come directly from human intuition. On this episode of Renegade Thinkers Unite, Drew interviews Rich Kylberg, Vice President of Corporate Marketing and Communications at Arrow Electronics. Arrow is a $24 billion global supplier for a wide array of technology and products, and Rich has helped them break into new ways of communicating internally and externally. Throughout this podcast, Rich explains how his background in literature allows him to see marketing campaigns in new ways and why casting a vision internally is needed before you can communicate identity externally. Arrow’s groundbreaking SAM vehicle technology is revolutionizing many industries, and you’ll be inspired by Rich’s explanation of this pursuit. Arrow was on the verge of becoming a holding company too comfortable in their own success, but Rich was determined to take some risks and create a guiding theme that would direct every employee and customer interaction. Thus, the phrase “guiding innovation forward” was born. Rich explains that “you have to inspire your employees before you can market your company externally” and this progress was essential for Arrow to continue growing. It created a conversation starter that is still being talked about today. To hear exactly how Rich achieved this lofty goal, be sure to give this episode a listen. Why risk taking in marketing is so important Rich and Drew are adamant about risk-taking in marketing - it’s one of the key aspects of being a Renegade Thinker. On this episode, Rich explains that the opportunity to attain exponential rewards are worth taking substantial risks and that the fear of mediocrity is often the driving force behind risk-taking. CMOs in any B2B environment should ask themselves these questions: What risks am I willing to take in my marketing? What will be the source of my courage? How am I going to prepare? After you consider these questions, remember that as a marketer you need to be empowered to try ideas, keep what works, and move past what doesn't. Without risky marketing decisions, Rich and his team never could have developed the storytelling marketing campaign that moved Arrow into the future of connecting with clients and telling great stories. Be sure to discover the story on this episode. Arrow’s innovative storytelling marketing campaign and how Rich and his team burst through the barriers they encountered Arrow Electronics recently unveiled their latest storytelling marketing campaign, and it’s one that resonates with people across the country. When Rich and his team were connected with a former Indy Racing League race car driver who was sadly diagnosed as a quadriplegic after a crash in 2000, they came up with the SAM car technology - a car that would allow drivers with disabilities to regain their independence. When asked about the project, Rich's team explained that "We hope the SAM car continues to drive technology innovation forward and inspire people to dream big because anything is possible.” Had Rich and his marketing team forgone risk-taking and stuck with what is “normal” and expected in the marketing industry, this amazing project never would have left the idea board. It’s sure to inspire you and your team to take marketing risks and delve into the unknown so be sure to get all of the details by listening to this episode of Renegade Thinkers Unite. RSS PODCAST PROPHECY:  WOMEN, MIRACLES, AND ISLAM In the book, Danica -- Crossing the Line, by Indy car driver Danica Patrick, Danica explains that if you really want something and you work hard at it, you can succeed. A friend told me the other day about a man who had been called to China 20 years ago but has never gone. If you have a calling from God, and if you work hard at it, it WILL come to pass: in one way or another. Indy car driver, Danica Patrick, also describes how her father taught her to have fun. That’s what your calling in Messiah Jesus is about: Having fun, enjoying your work for God. Yes, suffering is a part of our calling. “That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, becoming conformed to his death.” (Philippians 3:10) “Because it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in him, but also to suffer on his behalf.”  (Philippians 1:29) WHEN I WAS ARRESTEDAND LATER WAS STABBED WITH A KNIFE I was arrested while preaching one time, but nine (9) people were saved in the jail. While I was out of jail awaiting my court trial I was stabbed in the abdomen by two men. I had several holes I my intestines and would have died but God sent a man I did NOT know - and who did NOT know me - to pray for me, and I was miraculously healed. I had several tubes running in and out of my body and, also, a nurse stationed full time at my bedside. A man who was in a laundromat in Los Angeles heard about me being stabbed. He did NOT know me, but the Holy Spirit told him to go to the hospital and pray for me. At that time there were 2,500 rooms in the hospital and I was on the 9th floor in the 9300 ward. I remember coming to consciousness and it was like God and the Holy Angels were on my right side, and the devil and demons were on my left side trying to suck my soul out of my body. I was tempted just to let go and die, enjoying the drugs flowing through me that were helping to subside my suffering. I will never forget these words: God said to me, “Get command of this situation.” I knew what He meant. I had to get command of the situation mentally. I prayed and said, “God, I know you can heal long distance, but if you will just send someone to lay hands on me and pray for me, I KNOW I will be healed." A while later – I do not know if it was minutes or hours – a man came walking into the ward (where there were about 15 people who had been shot, stabbed, attacked). I was the worst case there and, as I mentioned, was the only one with a nurse stationed by my side full time. The man came to my bed and said these EXACT words: “Brother, the LORD Jesus raised me from the dead one time, and He has sent me to pray for you that you might be healed.” Then he laid his hands upon my head and said, “LORD Jesus, heal my brother.” After that, he turned around and walked out. I walked out a few days later after the LORD had saved eleven (11) people in that hospital ward (including nurses). If you want to know the POWER of Messiah’s resurrection, you have to experience His suffering. I had, previous to the time I was stabbed, preached a lot on resurrection, but NEVER about suffering. I do NOT want suffering. Maybe some people do. However, the Word of God teaches that it is a part of our organic union with Messiah so that we may KNOW Him and the POWER of His RESURRECTION. Work hard to attain the ministry you desire: the work God Almighty has placed in your heart. As Danica Patrick mentioned in her book, enjoy what you do. Real estate tycoon, Donald Trump, says the same thing: enjoy what you do. You will enjoy the ministry God has given you … even through trial and suffering. The JOY of the LORD is your strength. If you can NOT go through suffering and trial and hardship by God’s grace and through the POWER of His resurrection, then you can NOT progress to the next step of love, productivity, and forgiveness. I have long ago forgiven the men who stabbed me. After they stabbed me they even held the knife to my face with the blood upon it so I could see it. I prayed for them right there and put two little red Bibles in their hands. They are probably preachers now. I have a large scar where I was stabbed, but it has been 39 years and two weeks since then. I am still alive serving God, and having FUN … experiencing JOY … serving the ONE Who called me into His service. I started this podcast talking about my favorite female race car driver, Danica Patrick. Another female race car driver, Lyn St. James, winner of the 1992 Indy 500 Rookie of the Year, and on the Board of Trustees where I previously obtained my Engineering degree, has an impressive record as follows: • 1992 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of The Year (first woman to win) • 7 Indianapolis 500 starts in 9 years, including 6 consecutive starts (1992 - 1997) • Highest qualifying: 6th in 1994 Indy 500; highest finish – 11th in 1992 • Set world record on closed-course for women reaching 225.722 mph during the 1995 Indy 500 qualification weekend • Oldest driver in the field (age 53) at the 2000 Indy 500 • Raced in 15 Indy races including CART Championship and Indy Racing League. • Scored 2 Top-10 qualifying spots; 1 Top-10 Finish • Held 31 international and national closed circuit speed records over a 20-year period. • Raced twice (1989, 1991) in the biggest endurance race in the world; the 24 Hours of Le Mans (France) • Two wins in the 24 Hours of Daytona (winning GTO Team Driver in 1987 and 1990) • Raced (9 times) in the famous 12 Hours of Sebring Endurance race (winning GTO Team driver in 1990) • Raced in 53 SCCA Trans-Am races with 7 Top-5 finishes and raced in 62 IMSA GT races with 6 wins and 17 Top-5 and 37 Top-10 finishes • Only woman to win an IMSA GT race driving solo (1985 Watkins Glen) • Raced in the legendary Goodwood Motor Circuit Revival & Festival Meetings in England in 2001, 2005, 2006, and 2007 As a motivational speaker to corporate and government leaders, Lyn St. James teaches people this axiom: “Find out what makes you tick.” Find out what makes you tick. PROPHECY: Just as Danica Patrick and Lyn St. James have broken through and set blazing paths in a man’s sport – high speed international auto racing - so in a parallel sense, God is getting ready to use women to break through in POWERFUL apostolic and prophetic ministry. Some of these will be women in the Middle East: in the ISLAMIC world. NO one will be able to kill them … they will have angelic protection until the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob calls them home, or until Yeshua returns. They will be deliverers as Deborah was in Israel.
