When biologist Danielle Whittaker started studying bird odors, some scientists tried to discourage her, claiming that birds can't smell. But that only deepened her curiosity. Once, she caught a whiff of a cowbird, which smelled to her like sugar cookies. Danielle and her colleagues studied Dark-eyed Juncos and found that they produce many odors that help influence breeding behavior. Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents - The Audobin Society has been holding Christmas Bird Counts across North America for the past 125 years. On Cortes Island it is co-sponsored by the Cortes Island Museum and Birds Canada. Thirty-nine walkers, cyclists, boaters, and people in cars participated in Cortes Islands 2024 Christmas Bird Count. This was the third time that more than 4,000 birds have been counted since the islands first Christmas Bird Count in 2001. A new record was set: 4,545 Birds were listed. Donna Collins explained, "We had more birders out, more areas covered and lots of birds counted."  The most numerous species were 1,057 Surf Scoters. There were also three unusual sightings. This is the first time Ring-billed gulls have been listed in a Christmas count. Laurel Bohart counted 32. Turkey vultures are not usually seen this time of year. One was seen during the week in 2014, but it did not make it into the official count. Sierra Sullivan saw a Turkey vulture this year.  Michael Sullivan saw three American coots.     Laurel Bohart and Donna Collins agreed to describe their experience of the day.   Laurel Bohart: "Donna showed up at my place in Squirrel Cove. I had already looked at the birds on my feeder, which were maybe 12 Juncos. We went directly to the dump  to check on birds there  and spotted 6 Ravens. Of course, they're always there when the dump is open because of food. Along with them, there were some wrens."   Donna Collins: "We were having a hard time because we could hear them, but couldn't see them." Laurel Bohart: "It's hard to see them because they were lurking in the bush. We spent some time just on the driveway, in and out of the Recycling Centre.  Unfortunately my binoculars aren't very good and her eyes are better than mine and sharper. So she was just describing what they might be. We had the bird book with us and were frantically looking through the pages."   "We saw a whole cloud of Pine Siskins."   Cortes Currents: Can either of you recognize the birds by their sounds?   Laurel Bohart: "A Wren's like ‘chik chik, chik chik, chik chik, chiche, chik, chik, chiche, chik,  chik.' That's the alarm call."   "The other calls were more a mingled sound,  kind of a high pitched ‘we wi wi wi  wi  wi.'”   Cortes Currents: What was that? Laurel Bohart: "That would be birds higher up in the trees and no, I couldn't really tell which ones they were. I could hear them, although my hearing aid is not perfect." "The  adventure came  first of all, when we went down to the waterfront by the Squirrel Cove store."  "I have never seen so many gulls in my life. The gulls were Glaucus-winged Gulls mostly.  There was one Mew gull, one Bonaparte's and a bunch of Ring billed gulls,  all splashing very happily right around, right in the creek's mouth and making a great deal of noise." "What was happening was the gush of water out of the Basil Creek estuary was fanning farther out into the ocean. Behind that fan, where all the birds were in front, there were sea lions or seals. We had a line of a couple dozen Bufflehead ducks cleaning their feathers in the fresh water. There were Goldeneye ducks, I think there was four. There was a whole line of Surf Scoters, at least a dozen."   "What caught our attention was the crows between there and the Klahoose First Nation." Cortes Currents: In the final tally it says you saw 89 crows. Do you have any explanation for that number?

Birds in flocks almost invariably develop a pecking order. An alpha chicken can peck any other in the flock, and a beta chicken can peck all others but the alpha bird. Juncos and other small birds have a pecking order, too. The pecking order – or dominance hierarchy – of a flock of birds is usually this: males are dominant to females and adults are dominant to young birds. As a flock changes and birds come and go, the pecking order changes. If you feed backyard birds, you will likely notice this pecking order behavior in the flock.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? Subscribe to our weekly newsletter. I'm trying something new: a short-form twist on my soundwalk formula, folding in my photography. So here is a pilot episode of sorts. I hope you enjoy this little string of impressions in sound and vision.Go on and hit that play button above. Let's see what we can see, and hear what we can hear. It's a densely overcast morning. As soon as I hit the trail, I'm checking out a Townsend's Chipmunk. It's smaller than my hand, munching on a seed, I think. Do you hear the click-click-click-click? That's my camera. That's the sound it makes when I want to take pictures in low light without a tripod. It takes multiple shots and stitches them together. The chipmunk is still, and then poof it's gone. It rained all night long. The trees are saturated and dripping. Little streams and rivulets course down the upper reaches of Balch Creek Canyon. I love listing to their ephemeral burble. Across the canyon, the tops of Douglas-fir emerge from the mist. The hillside is breathing. I've been on a mushroom kick, so I'm scanning the stumps and nurse logs on the side of the trail. I see a slug munching on fungi. A petit dejeuner.I hear Golden-crowned kinglets up in the canopy, and a Pacific Wren chipping over the rise. I've come back down to the Wildwood Trail. It's an easy stroll here as it rounds the contour of the Tualatin mountains above the upper reaches of these NW Portland neighborhoods built out in the early 1900s. The din of highway 30 and the NW industrial park washes up these slopes. The train whistles are ghostly, bouncing off the fir colonnades. Look, rays of sunlight are breaking through. On one of these firs I spy Fairy Parachutes (Marasmiellus candidus) nestled in the saturated moss. I can't think of a more perfect, evocative name for these. The circumference of these are less than that of a dime. These are the only ones I find today. On a nearby stump I see a similarly very delicate duo. Like so many, I can't identify it. Do you know? Around the corner I spy a coral fungus (Clavulina coralloides). It's about two inches tall. Not big. I set my camera down in the duff to capture this angle, and it appears bigger. Click-click-click-click.I've been hearing Red-breasted Nuthatches up high in the canopy. Their calls sounds like little clown shoes on parade to me. Honk honk honk. The only bird that I attempt to photograph, other than some Dark-eyed Juncos is this Brown Creeper.Brown Creepers always climb up tree trunks, and they are very on task, so you'll often get good looks at them in the forest. What does it have in its beak?Brown Creepers have one of the sweetest songs. Trees, trees, beautiful trees they sing in a pitch so high that many a septuagenarian (age 70+) can no longer hear them. With that in mind, I try to savor their singing when it's quiet. On the north side of the rise, I now see the firs and ferns backlit by the rays of sun breaking through. They glisten with a million raindrops clinging to them, like so many berries. This purple capped mushroom on the side of the trail is coated with bits of soil from the barrage of the morning rain. It stretches out above the fir cones like a battle-worn survivor.Nearby I find this scene and try to puzzle out a scenario from the forensic evidence. I don't get far, but the words “string cheese incident" pop into my head, and I visualize a squirrel. One thing that quickly becomes clear about fungi photography is the extent to which it's difficult to communicate scale. These are miniscule, testing the limits of my camera.I identify them as belonging to the large Mycena genus, commonly known as bonnets. Wikipedia says:Mycenas are hard to identify to species and some are distinguishable only by microscopic features such as the shape of the cystidia. Some species are edible, while others contain toxins, but the edibility of most is not known, as they are likely too small to be useful in cooking.and..Over 58 species are known to be bioluminescent, creating a glow known as foxfire.I wonder if these guys glow?As I work my way back, I'm struck by how everything looks a little different with the sun being a few degrees higher on the horizon. Late-morning light. Time to head home. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit chadcrouch.substack.com/subscribe

Tonight, on Trackside, we have a lot of news to talk about! Kevin and Curt start the show by talking about Keanu Reeves racing at IMS. They discuss Rossi moving to Ed Carpenter Racing, and how he can help Ed Carpenter Racing become a better team. They also talk about Christian Rasmussen going to ECR as well. They debate on who will be in the Juncos lineup, and Jamie Chadwick's test at IMS. Kevin talks about how she could benefit from another year of Indy NXT.  Later, Kevin and Curt talk about the big news that Michael Andretti has stepped down from his leadership role at Andretti. They talk about who will take over in Andretti's stead, and what will happen to the team's name. They speculate if the reason Andretti stepped down was because of F1 refusing to have the Andretti branding. They also discuss Wayne Taylor Racing removing the Andretti name from their branding.  To round out the first hour, Kevin previews the next hour.  In the second hour of the show, Kevin and Curt look at some tweets by fans. They talk about the group that Zak Brown and Michael Andretti formed called Andretti Acquisition Corp. II, and what the purpose of the organization is. Could it be to buy IndyCar? They also answer a question about other investors being added to IndyCar to help with growing the series. They also talk about the schedule, and the importance of avoiding football.  Later, Kevin and Curt talk about the likelihood of returning to some previous tracks that fans have been vying for several seasons. They talk about if they will ever go back to Phoenix and Watkins Glen. They also talk about the possibility of Daniel Riccardo racing IndyCar, and his fear of ovals.  To end the show, Kevin reviews what they missed, including if the IMS oval test will be open to the public. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tonight on Trackside, we recap a crazy Detroit Grand Prix. Curt and Kevin recap the Grand Prix and talk about their reaction to it. They also talk about Kyle Larson's waiver finally being granted by NASCAR, and controversy with Agustin Canapino and Theo Pourchaire. Kevin believes that racing is a financial business, and even if the track is not perfect, there is serious financial gain to be had from racing at this location. He believes that having one wreck-filled race a year is not all that bad for teams, and fans like chaos.  Later in the the first hour of the show, Kevin and Curt talk about Scott Dixon. We hear about how Alex Palou's season has not been as dominant as it had been in previous years, and now Scott Dixon is a challenger for the championship win. They talk about Scott Dixon approaching AJ Foyt's win record, and if he can surpass it in his career.  To round out the first hour, Kevin answers some listener questions, like lack of fans at oval races, Ed Carpenter swapping cars, and more.  In the second hour of the show, Kevin and Curt talk about Flavor Flav, and his being Will Power's hype man. Kevin recounts a story of Power at qualifying in Detroit, and how Flav made sure he was in the camera shot during an interview to promote his brand. We talk about Will Power's comments during the race about race control and answer other listener questions. They also talk about David Malukas and what team he could come back and race for this season and next season, and Tom Blomqvist being removed from Meyer-Shank. They also talk about the conflict with Santino Ferrucci and Kyle Kirkwood.  Later in the second hour, Kevin and Curt talk about the controversy with Agustin Canapino and Theo Pourchaire, and the threats Pourchaire received for crashing with Canapino during the race. We hear about IndyCar's stance on the issue, what Canapino had to say, and how Juncos is taking the controversy, and how hard it would be to regulate these types of threats.  Kevin ends the show paying homage to racing legend Parnelli Jones. It was announced that Jones passed during the show, and Kevin talks about his accomplishments, and we hear a statement from PJ Jones, Parnelli's son. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Spring Thunderstorm at White Deer Lake

This was recorded on a spring day in the forest near White Deer Lake, a seasonal lake in Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The lake is large and shallow when full, but only lasts a couple months in spring before drying up entirely. It's surrounded by coniferous forest of Ponderosa Pine, Lodgepole Pine, and White Fir. At the time I made this recording there were only a few small pools of water left. I arrived late in the morning and the sky was blue and sunny above, but clouds were beginning to build all around. I set up the microphone in the forest not far from the lake under a dense bunch of young White Fir trees which provided shelter from rain and wind when the storms eventually passed overhead. The clouds continued to build until the first rumbles of thunder were heard in the distance. The chirping calls of Mountain Chickadees and Dark-eyed Juncos are heard along with other birds, and frogs can be heard in the distance in the remaining pools of the fast drying lake. As the storms moved closer, gentle rain began to fall and a light breeze blew through the trees above. The thunder became increasingly loud and powerful until it passed directly overhead. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit chadcrouch.substack.comRamona Falls lies within the Mt. Hood National Wilderness, near the headwaters of the Sandy River. Volcanic eruptions on Mt. Hood in 1780 created a mudflow. This event inspired the name of the Sandy river, as Lewis and Clark called it [in 1805], "Quicksand River." The name was later changed to the "Sandy River." The Ramona Falls was apparently named by US Forest Service worker John E. Mills in 1933. He named the falls after his late wife, Ramona. -worldatlasThe trail is a roughly seven mile out-and-back or loop option. The northernmost section, trail #797, closely follows Ramona Creek and is in my opinion the prettier and more musical option. You'll hear my feet scuffling on the coarse sand trail approaching the Sandy River crossing. I cut out the portion of audio crossing the Sandy River because—and this is not intuitive to most people—larger, fast-moving rivers are not intrinsically pleasing to listen to. They're not bad, but they tend to sound like walls of white noise, often masking wildlife sounds and the acoustics of place. They sound meh. Loud and featureless. Interestingly, because it's a wilderness area, The Forest Service doesn't maintain a bridge across The Sandy. The logic is a little convoluted, given they used to have a modular “seasonal bridge”, and there are numerous footbridges crossing Ramona Creek. It may have something to do with a tragic accident in 2014 when a hiker was swept away crossing the seasonal bridge in a flash flood event. His body was found a mile downstream. Was that bridge deemed a safety liability? I can only remember combinations of leaps and shimmying on downed logs to cross it.It must have been 2015 when I made the trip up there with my dad. He told me a story about coming upon a hiking group in distress on the trail above the falls many years before. One of their party had died on from an allergic reaction to a bee sting, of all things. I recall he spoke of spending quite a few hours helping them. I looked for a historical news article for details. I couldn't find one. The hike to Ramona Falls may be statistically safer than walking on a city street, but something about the remoteness of wilderness frames a wider existential perspective on life and death. Mountains do that. They take you out of yourself for a spell. I will always associate Ramona Falls with the last time I did a day hike with my dad. I distinctly remember the vivid colors of the moss and lichen that day. The clouds were very low and misty, diffusing the low-hanging autumn sun. It was dreamlike. Liminal. This particular day was not dissimilar. The clouds lingered, offering occasional showers, but were less prismatic in their density. Red Crossbills winged by overhead. Dark-eyed Juncos foraged on the ground and low in the canopy. Once again, I had a sustained moment with a raven. I love crossing paths with ravens. The focal point of the soundscape is largely Ramona Creek, culminating in an approach to the spectacular falls:What makes it so striking? It's not tall or awesomely powerful. It's approachable, decorated with emerald-hued moss, and often dramatically lit from rays of sun filtering through the fir trees. It's strikingly symmetrical, roughly diamond shaped, and finely textured. Its song is more music than thunder. It's just a one-of-a-kind waterfall to lay eyes and ears on, and I'm pleased to share it with you!Ramona Falls Soundwalk is available on all streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple, Tidal, Amazon, YouTube…) tomorrow Apr. 12.Lastly, if you didn't catch them, I recently posted Soundscape podcast episodes of the Total Solar Eclipse (in a stereo image featuring wildlife on the left and humans on the right), and a nice long relaxing recording I made at Pacific Beach, WA a couple weeks ago.
