About 300,000 people packed into the Indianapolis Speedway this morning for the Indy 500. The gruelling IndyCar race featured two New Zealand drivers - the decorated Scott Dixon and the up-and-coming Scott McLaughlin. Motorsport journalist and broadcaster, Stephen McIvor, spoke to Craig McCulloch.

Sam Schmidt is the Co-Owner of Arrow McLaren SP, an Indycar racing team comprised of two determined racing entities, McLaren Racing and Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. That ambition is shared and supported by title partner Arrow Electronics. Sam grew up working on race cars and in 1997 embarked on his racing career as an Indycar driver. Two years later he took his first win in Las Vegas and finished 5th in the 1999 championship. In January of the following year, during off-season testing at Walt Disney World Speedway in Orlando, Sam suffered a massive crash. As co-hosts of The Weekly Driver Podcast, Bruce Aldrich and I sometimes have a guest cancel at the last minute. Two-time Indy 500 winner Al Unser Jr. was our scheduled guest. With his non-appearance, we decided to talk about him. Specifically, we discuss Unser's new book, "A Checkered Past." The 302-hardcover offering includes a foreword by Roger Penske, the team owner who once employed "Little Al" and who is now the owner of the Indianapolis Speedway. Al Unser Jr. tells his life story in his new book, "A Checkered Past." The book is written "As Told To Jade Gurss." A long-time journalist, Gurss has written several additional motorsports books and has also worked in marketing and publicity for Mercedes-Benz and Mazda in his varied career. Unser's book is appropriately titled. Throughout his adult life, the winner of the 1992 and 1994 Indy 500s has been addicted to alcohol and drugs. It costs him his racing career, friends, family and nearly his life. Al Unser Jr.: Life Was A Party "Something else made a big difference for me personally," Unser says in Chapter 15: Randomly Selected. "For the first time CART has instituted random drug testing. A month before the first race of the season (1988), I quit smoking marijuana on a daily basis. I felt sharp. I could feel the difference when I was driving and giving feedback to the team." But for Al Unser Jr. life as an addict and its ramifications exceeded his attempts for a healthy life. Beyond discussing the new book, Bruce also provides an update on the pending new Ford F-250 pickup truck and RV he and his wife Alene have recently purchased. The town of Speedway, Indiana is known for racing with the Indianapolis Speedway being a huge attraction. But, in 1978, Speedway gained attention for a number of high-profile crimes. In September of that year, a serial bomber terrorized the area by detonating eight separate bombs. A month after the bombings, the murder of four young Burger Chef employees rocked the area. Known as the Burger Chef murders, Jayne Friedt, Daniel Davis, Mark Flemmonds, and Ruth Shelton were murder as they were closing up the restaurant. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss these crimes that occurred in Speedway in 1978. The police focused on a suspect in the Speedway bombings. But, the Burger Chef murders remain unsolved to this day. There are a slew of questions to be answered and just as many shady characters that have been linked in some way. Uppity - Available on Netflix Willy T.'s dream would have to wait until 1991 when he became the Jackie Robinson of IndyCar Racing by being the 1st African American to start in the Indy 500. He raced at Indy again in 1993 - finishing 21st. It was 9 years later in 2002 that George Mack follow the path set by Willy T. by making the field of 33 and finishing 17th. In the 18 years that have followed, there has not been an African American as part of the 33. In a dual fold manner - to celebrate Black History Month and also to shine a light on a up and coming driver, I interviewed David Dalton, Jr. David dreams of being the 3rd African American Driver to race in the Indy 500. But he knows he has a long ways to go to get there and is open to doing what he loves to do - Race. The history of General Cigar began in 1848 when Ferdinand Cullman immigrated to the US from Germany. His grandson made one of the greatest contributions to the cigar world: the Connecticut Shade wrapper. In 1960, Cullman Brothers bought General Cigar Company and became the largest manufacturer and marketer of premium cigars with impressive brands. In 1997, General Cigar acquired Villazon, the maker of such iconic brands as Punch, Hoyo de Monterrey, and Excalibur.
