The tale is a parable for the resistance generation as it broaches subjects such as socialism, Palestinian rights, male privilege, prisons, systemic racism — issues that were once the crux of the radical Angela Agenda but are now liberal talking points. It reveals a crucial question about how we respond to activists: When should we push back — and when should we wait and see where they lead us?She’s someone who, from a very young age, has provoked enormous controversy over whether her ideas were good or bad,” says Jane Kamensky, director of Harvard University’s Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America. “She cast herself as a revolutionary. And we have liked our civil rights activists firmly in the reform tradition, and we have liked our revolutionaries male.”“She inspired a lot of black intellectuals, in addition to being a person about whose fate we were concerned in how the criminal justice system was treating her,” says Henry Louis Gates, director of Harvard’s Hutchins Center for African & African American Research. He recalled that Davis, who studied philosophy, was the reason he enrolled in a philosophy course and that he had once had hung a “Free Angela” poster on his wall.WP

“I don’t think there’s any mathematical way, looking at the field and the number of candidates, that there wouldn’t be a runoff,” political strategist David Axelrod told the Tribune last week. Underscoring the slim possibility of a final decision Tuesday night, he said: “I mean, meteorologically there’s a way to get hit by lightning, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.” The horse rac Axelrod, the architect of former President Barack Obama’s political rise, said he thinks Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle likely will secure one of the two runoff spots with the backing of two powerful labor groups: the Chicago Teachers Union and Service Employees Union International. Early voting numbers by Friday had reached 74,000 and by Monday were expected to exceed the 89,000 early votes cast in 2015. Vote-by-mail, once known as absentee voting, is up. Of the 63,000 who applied to vote by mail — nearly triple the requests made in the last two city elections — about 24,000 ballots had been returned. One clue may come from Chicago’s voter registration numbers. They’re slightly up, which may add up to more voters heading to the polls. Right now, the city has 1.58 million registered voters on the rolls, up from 1.4 million in 2011 and 1.42 million in 2015 — the last two municipal election years. In 2011, 594,000 voters, or 42 percent of those registered, cast a ballot, while that number dipped to 438,700, or 34 percent of registered voters, in 2015, though the mayoral runoff between incumbent Mayor Rahm Emanuel and challenger Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, now a congressman, drew a whopping 600,000 voters.

Corporate profits are booming, but average wages haven't budged over the past year. The U.S. economy has run this way for decades, partly because of a fundamental change in business practices dating back to the 1980s. On Wednesday I'm introducing legislation to fix it.American corporations exist only because the American people grant them charters. Those charters confer valuable privileges -- such as limited legal liability for their owners -- that enable businesses to turn a profit. What do Americans get in return? What are the obligations of corporate citizenship in the U.S.?Elizabeth Warren Happy Valentine’s Day
This article is meant to provide a relatively comprehensive assessment of Klobuchar’s strengths and weaknesses — rather than being either a “devil’s advocate” argument or a best-case scenario. It’s informed by conversations with Klobuchar’s campaign as well as with unaffiliated Democrats, but the opinions and analysis are my own. As you’ll see, I think Klobuchar’s upsides outweigh her downsides, but there’s plenty of material in both columns.Nate Silver
Texas - Congresswoman Veronica Escobar and several El Paso elected officials held a news conference Monday to ask President Donald Trump "to correct the record on his misleading State of the Union remarks about El Paso, and to apologize to El Pasoans for misrepresenting their hometown." During his State of the Union address last week, President Trump claimed El Paso became one of the safest cities in America after the installation of a border barrier. Trump's comment ignited a firestorm of criticism from local leaders. "The border city of El Paso, Texas used to have extremely high rates of violent crime - one of the highest in the country - and considered one of our nation's most dangerous cities," Trump said. "Now, with a powerful barrier in place, El Paso is one of our safest cities."KVIA About a mile down the road, several thousand demonstrators gathered at a high school carrying American flags, rainbow banners, “Beto for President” flags, and flags for Mexico and Texas. There were also signs decrying Trump and his border wall — such as “Trump made America hate again” — and chants from the crowd that included “Make tacos, not walls!” The President is coming to El Paso Monday. He will promise a wall and will repeat his lies about the dangers that immigrants pose. With El Paso as the backdrop, he will claim that this city of immigrants was dangerous before a border fence was built here in 2008.Beto

A third scandal to hit the Democratic administration of Virginia sent the Capitol reeling on Wednesday. Attorney General Mark Herring, in a statement he issued late in the morning, said he dressed in "brown makeup" and a wig to imitate rappers as a 19-year-old at the University of Virginia. Herring is next in line to become governor if both Gov. Ralph Northam and Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax step down. Northam is facing calls to resign over a photo on his medical school yearbook page showing men in a Ku Klux Klan robe and blackface, and Fairfax has been accused of sexually assaulting a woman in 2004. If all three resign, Republican House Speaker Kirk Cox would be next in line for the Governor's Mansion.pilotonline.com
The first and foremost reason I was interested is that I thought Trump might signal his strategy on the border wall — e.g. whether he was willing to shut down the government again, or declare a national emergency, or whatever else. But he didn’t really do that. It’s not even clear that he has his strategy figured out. Now, arguably, the lack of a threat to shut down the government or to declare an emergency is itself newsworthy, a pulling back from the brink if you will, but there was also enough rhetoric about the importance of the wall and how dangerous illegal immigration is that I’m not sure I’d give too much credence to that theory. Today, the men and women of the @NRA honor the profound life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King applied for a concealed carry permit in a "may issue" state and was denied. We will never stop fighting for every law-abiding citizen's right to self-defense. #MLKDay Today Americans celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We in Israel greatly appreciate Dr. King and his efforts to stamp out bigotry, including hatred against the Jewish people and the Jewish State. We remember his moral clarity when he said that anti-Zionism is antisemitism. What we do know is that King welcomed the Jewish community into the his movement—quite a few Jews participated in his efforts to end segregation. But King didn’t often mention U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East, so any views on Israel attributed to him are almost certainly BS .if we are to honor King’s message and not merely the man, we must condemn Israel’s actions: unrelenting violations of international law, continued occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza, home demolitions and land confiscations Michelle Alexander

The dresses were meant to bring attention to missing and murdered indigenous women. The total loss in Nebraska farm revenues due to the retaliatory tariffs ranges from $695 million to $1.026 billion so far in 2018,” Rempe said. “That’s roughly 11 to 16 percent of the export values of Nebraska agriculture goods in 2017.” In terms of the broader Nebraska economy, the analysis says that when direct farm losses are combined with the state’s labor income losses, the total economic loss to the state of Nebraska from retaliatory tariffs climbs to between $859 million and $1.2 billion.Nebraska Farm Bureau Iowa farmers could lose up to $2.2 billion from the U.S.'s trade wars, a new study shows, and those losses would ripple through the economy, hitting state tax receipts, jobs and industries such as manufacturing. A job in the government has long been underwritten by the understanding that while you wouldn’t strike it rich on the federal pay scale, you also didn’t need to worry about the corporate world’s mercurial whims. The focus was on serving the public, rather than pursuing profits. The pace could be frustratingly inefficient, but it also was not maddeningly chaotic. And the trade-off came with solid health and retirement benefits. That grand bargain — deployed for decades to lure talent into the government ranks — is threatened today by a bruising shutdown with no end in sight. And this is the third shutdown in one year. The situation is exacerbated by a president who appears to view many government workers with contempt, deriding the federal bureaucracy as “the Deep State” and noting derisively via tweet that DJ Trump thinks most government workers are Democrats. “The U.S. Congress cannot be a platform for Steve King and those of his ilk. From Charleston to Charlottesville to Chicago to California, there is no home for this behavior, especially the floor of the United States House of Representatives.”Bobby Rush I have no tolerance for such positions and those who espouse these views are not supporters of American ideals and freedoms,” McConnell said in a written statement to The Washington Post. “Rep. King’s statements are unwelcome and unworthy of his elected position. If he doesn’t understand why ‘white supremacy’ is offensive, he should find another line of work.” Anti-Defamation League called on Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and McCarthy to censure King and remove him as the top Republican on a House Judiciary subcommittee.Jonathan Greenblatt, the group’s chief executive and national director, said in a letter to the House leaders that it was the second time that he had made such a request.“When it comes to Rep. King, we are beyond substantive disagreements. Rep. King has brought dishonor onto the House of Representatives,” Greenblatt wrote. By censuring King, he added, “you will make clear that his actions were deeply offensive, wrong, and that the U.S. House of Representatives will not tolerate anti-Semitism or bigotry in any form.”

Russell Vought took the helm of the Office of Management and Budget a little more than a week ago, after agencies began closing their doors. In just a few days, he has used his perch to make several controversial decisions aimed at blunting the impact of the partial government shutdown — moves meant to buy President Trump more time to drag out the closure, which is on the verge of becoming the longest in U.S. history. It was his decision to allow the Internal Revenue Service to pay tax refunds during the shutdown, something that hadn’t been previously allowed and that some Democrats called legally dubious. He was also involved in the effort to find money to pay food stamps in February, after it appeared that millions of Americans could lose the benefit.Vought wrote in 2016 that “Muslims do not simply have a deficient theology. They do not know God because they have rejected Jesus Christ his Son, and they stand condemned.”“I’m a Christian, and I believe in a Christian set of principles based on my faith,” Russell T. Forty years ago, Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping and I normalized diplomatic relations between the People’s Republic of China and the United States, putting an end to three decades of hostility. This led to an era distinguished by peace in East Asia and the Pacific region. China’s spectacular economic growth , in conjunction with its continuing integration with the much larger U.S. economy, has enabled the two countries to become engines of global prosperity. Scientific and cultural exchanges have blossomed, and the United States has since become the top foreign destination for Chinese scholars and tourists. The 40th anniversary of this relationship is a testament to the ability of countries with different histories, cultures and political systems to work together for the greater good. Yet, today, this critical relationship is in jeopardy. Jimmy Carter ‘No matter what our differences, most of us want the same thing,’’ the 69-year-old Massachusetts Democrat said in a video that highlights her family’s history in Oklahoma. ‘‘To be able to work hard, play by the same set of rules and take care of the people we love. That’s what I’m fighting for and that’s why today I’m launching an exploratory committee for president.’’Elizabeth Warren

Homelessness in the U.S. has remained almost flat in 2018, highlighting the magnitude of the problem in Seattle, where the number of homeless people swelled by more than 10 times the national average, according to new federal data. Homelessness rose 0.3 percent nationally this year, according to a report released Monday by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The agency announced the results of counts of homeless people from one night in January in more than 3,000 cities and counties, a study that’s been conducted annually for more than a decade. Seattle remained — as it has since 2015 — third in the nation when it comes to the sheer number of homeless people.Seattle Times
