The unpredictable availability of salmon and other fish in Alaska is putting additional pressure on the practice of subsistence fishing for Alaska Native residents. A federal board just opened up subsistence fishing and hunting — something reserved only for rural residents — to all 14,000 residents of Ketchikan. The State of Alaska is fighting a federal panel's approval of a COVID-era emergency subsistence hunt for citizens in Kake. Meanwhile, stakeholders are closely watching a legal conflict over fishing on the Kuskokwim River that has implications for decades of legal precedents over subsistence fishing access. They moved to the far end of the island that now bears Baranov's name, but remained contentious cohabitants with the Russians, keeping the settlers on guard. Even though the Tlingits lost, the battle was a landmark event that influenced Russian settlement that came after. “Southern Alaska Native Nations' Intervention: Stopping the Extractive Mining Industry from Maiming and Extinguishing Life” Today on American Indian Airwaves, we go to southeast Alaska and British Colombia (B.C.), Canada, to discuss the Southeast Alaska Indigenous Transboundary Commission (SEITC), which consists of 15 Indigenous nations in southeast Alaska and rooted along Canada's transboundary rivers, recent submission of a formal request with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, a legal organization that is part of the Organization of American States (OAS), to halt the protracted and reckless mining activities that are violating Indigenous peoples human rights throughout the region. Dozens of mining companies are seeking permission from the British Columbia (B.C.) government to develop some of the world's largest gold mines in the headwaters of Southeast Alaska's transboundary rivers, and the Canadian government continues denying the sovereign rights of the Alaskan Native nations living downstream from the extractive mining activities. In fact, a recent decision, ordered by Canada's Ministry of Land, Water and Resource Stewardship on June 27th, 2024, could guarantee the destruction of both a critical ecological hotspot and the ways of life of the Southeast Alaska nations. For example, Skeena Resources Limited (“Skeena”) proposed in 2021 a major gold and silver mining project called The Eskay Creek Project. It is one of eight mines in B.C. that are at issue, but the Esky Project, which is in the final environmental review state, and if built, would produce an estimated 7.5 million tons of gold and silver over an estimated 14-year mine life span and the project would be in the same area as a previous mine that operated from 1994-2008. Lastly, the Esky Creek Project risk southern Alaska Native nations, rivers including the Unuk, Stikine, and Taku, five species of wild Pacific salmon, and more traditional lifeways with possible extinction if left unheeded. Guests: Guy Archibald, Executive Director, of the Southeast Alaska Indigenous Transboundary Commission (www.seitc.org). Guy is an analytical environmental chemist and microbiologist with over 20 years of experience. He works to utilize western science and apply traditional knowledge and practices to protect the various communities, the forest, salmon, trees, and people. Esther Reese is Eagle Tsaagweidí (Killerwhale) from Ḵéex̱ʼ Kwáan (Kake), Alaska. She is President of the Southeast Alaska Indigenous Transboundary Commission (www.seitc.org), and serves as the Tribal Administrator for the Wrangell Cooperative Association, the federally recognized Tribe in Wrangell, an Alaska Native nation at the mouth of the Stikine River. This week, we're turning over the interviewing to Dr. Max Utsler, our C-10 Curriculum Coordinator, who, like this week's guest, spent several years in television before going into a second career. In Max's case, that was about 40 years as a journalism professor. For this week's guest, it was television and into public relations. But we're getting ahead of ourselves.See, as we close out International Women's Month, it seemed like a perfect time to have this week's guest join us.A product of Raytown, Missouri, Cynthia Boles started working full-time in television in Wichita, Kansas, where she became the first female anchor in the state of Kansas. She also had career stops in cities such as Houston and Kansas City, Chicago and Los Angeles. (Not all in TV, as you'll hear.)Cynthia and Max worked together when Cynthia was getting her start in broadcasting at KOMU while she was a student at the University of Missouri. And, later, the two worked together, along with Cynthia's husband, Kenny, at KMBC here in Kansas City. After several years in Tyler, Texas, following the death of her husband Cynthia moved back to Kansas City. She has attended a few of our C-10 Mentoring & Leadership sessions. In fact, this particular interview was conducted on Wednesday night, March 23, in front of our mentors and students at Music Theater Heritage in Kansas City, Missouri.Although we removed the students' and mentors' questions at the end, we think you'll enjoy this chat about being a female pioneer and a great leader in TV and PR between two longtime friends.  LINKS:Register here for the 2nd Annual C You At Topgolf event. For more information about the C-10 Mentoring & Leadership program for high school students, visit our website. To make a financial gift to give students life-changing one-on-one mentoring, visit our secure donation page. For all episodes of the C-10 podcast and ways you can listen, click here.If you'd like to make a comment, have a suggestion for a future guest, or your company would like to help underwrite this podcast, please visit our contact page.

What would a pipe tobacco podcast be without a good deal of pipe tobacco reviews? Loose leaf, tin, and even the hard to find stuff will all find their way into our pipes and into our heads as we review the entirety of each pipe tobacco from the packaging, marketing, tin note, texture, flavor, and smoke. This week: Crumble Kake Barrel Aged No. 4 & C&D- Morning Light Pipe Question: (From Frank) Got a show question for you. If you could turn back time… if you could find a way…. What episode/topic would you ‘take back'. That is to say, is there any episode you wish you could revisit due to feeling that you either didn't do the topic justice or were just plain wrong about something? Maybe nothing! Afterall you guys are the best! But if you could…. What would it be? - Frank Quick Fire Questions: N/A Listener Feedback: (From the other pipe smoking Steve) Hello JD and Bo, I found the country squire store/and podcast about 6 months ago. I am slowly working my way through the country squire blends and have enjoyed them all. The 50th anniversary blend being my favorite so far. I have really enjoyed and learned A LOT from the podcast. Its interesting that my pipe journey sounds a lot like others I've heard on the show. I bought my first basket pipe about twenty years ago and have put it down and picked it back up several times over the years. It was my NEED to slow my mind down during meditation and prayer that brought me back to the pipe this last time. It was during a frustrating evening trying to connect with God on my back porch that the idea of 'the pipe' miraculously popped into my mind. I dont even know why because up to that point everytime I tried smoking it, it just ended in searing tung burn that lasted days. I give God the credit for turning me back to the pipe and slowing my mind down so I could start having some real conversations with him or sit in meditation and try to hear what he is trying to tell me. Also during this time I have of course been catching up on country squire radio. I started with the 2015 episodes and just now on 4-29-22 got caught up to the current one in Miami. You guys feel like family. It sounds like you are intentionally trying to keep that vibe while introducing new ideas for shows, after all one must change in order to grow. Excellent idea I hope you can do it...so far I love all of the ideas yall are putting on air. Be careful you dont let the show grow too big, you will never be able to downsize it. It will just start to implode on itself if you do lose the small town Jackson feel. FYI...I live in Nashville now but I am from just down the interstate from you guys, West Monroe Louisiana. There is nothing wrong with small town USA. A lot of days I wish I could be back there. Anyway I have a problem I need help with. For the past six months I've been listening to about a show a day, sometimes two. Mostly on the drive home in the evenings I can listen to a whole show and it makes me forget about the long drive. So I'm gonna need yall to crank out 1 show everyday now. As far as I know this is the only podcast in existence and it checks all the boxes for me! LOL!!! Just kidding of course but it will be difficult waiting a week to hear from you guys again. Thanks for what you do, love yall. I will hopefully be able to make the pilgrimage one day soon. God bless, - The other pipe smoking Steve
