On this episode of the Scouting For Growth podcast, Sabine VdL talks to Marcy Axelrod, a bestselling and award-winning author, TV contributor, two-time TEDx speaker, and renowned management consultant. Her latest book, "How We Choose to Show Up," has recently been honoured with the prestigious Hayakawa Book Prize. In today's conversation, we'll dive deep into the concepts from her book: The idea of "Showing Up"—the invisible system connecting us to our society, our situations, ourselves, and each other, how understanding and embracing the way we choose to show up can lead to a happier, more effective, and balanced life – whether we're parenting, coaching, playing, empowering others, or steering a global company. KEY TAKEAWAYS At 6 years old we moved from Baltimore to Boston, my older sibling wanted nothing to do with me and I needed something I wasn't getting. There was no one making me feel felt, which is what all humans need, and rather than act out I acted in and took it out on myself, I developed a stutter which led to me losing the ability to speak. Back through time to when we lived in caves we were never just in one role. We were always individuals distinct from, but also we were always a member of a family, a tribe, and we were at the whim of the environment. My book says that we were not designed to show up as inward facing individuals, we're designed in 3 roles: We're a discreet self (but not separate from), we're a situation member, and we're defined by a society there that creates who we are, and we create it as part of the collective. The model of how we can show up is easy for anyone to intuit, I've just put it on paper. Level one is burned out, stressed, not engaged, you can't show up in a meaningful way – and there are valid reasons for this that we all go through as part of life. Level 2 is just showing up, just getting stuff done – this isn't bad, we have to be there some of the time with a narrow, deep focus that is tactical and practical. Level 3 is truly showing up. There's a believe system behind how humans are designed to show up, and it's an important one because it gets us back into the flow of how nature designed us. There's nothing cultish, woo-woo, or mystical, it simply recognises you can't have up without down, left without right, or some version of individual without there being a society collective. BEST MOMENTS ‘I became a natural and deeply driven observer of how other are showing up, and I saw that they can show up as they choose, and yet they are not choosing.' ‘Our bodies are sensing flow systems, the skin exists because we can feel the world; temperature, pressure, motion, movement, the granularity and nuance of what we can perceive is awe inspiring.' ‘A big part of the ‘showing up continuum', and what it means to be a level 3, is recognising what and who we truly are.' ‘Some people wake up at 5am and get more done before 8am than some of us do in a day, but sometimes they can burn out and stress about things. We all dance along the continuum.' ABOUT THE GUEST Marcy Axelrod is a bestselling and award-winning author, esteemed TV contributor, and dynamic 2X TEDx speaker. The latest episode of Parsing Immigration Policy examines a groundbreaking legal case that has set a new precedent for how immigration policies intersect with environmental law. Julie Axelrod, Director of Litigation at the Center for Immigration Studies, joins the conversation to discuss the federal court's landmark decision that holds the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) accountable for violating the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).The Center bought a case against DHS on behalf of a rancher in the first case to successfully apply NEPA — often regarded as the "Magna Carta" of environmental laws — to immigration actions. NEPA, enacted in 1970, mandates that federal agencies evaluate the environmental effects of significant actions, including their impact on human environments. Yet, immigration policies have never undergone such analysis, despite their direct influence on population growth and environmental conditions.Key HighlightsWhat is NEPA? Axelrod explains the origins of NEPA and its importance in shaping government decision-making. She emphasizes that NEPA requires agencies to "look before they leap" by conducting thorough environmental reviews before implementing actions that could affect the environment. While NEPA has long applied to policies regarding energy, agriculture, etc., immigration authorities have never been held to the same standard — until now.Why It Matters: The ruling underscores the environmental impacts of mass immigration, which contribute to population growth, urban development, and strain on natural resources. Axelrod points out that, paradoxically, environmental groups — which typically champion NEPA — have not pursued this angle, leaving the Center to lead the charge.Future Implications: The court's decision paves the way for future lawsuits that could hold the government accountable for immigration policies' environmental consequences.Remedies: The case will now move forward to determine appropriate remedies, with briefings scheduled for later this year. Axelrod highlights the need for future public engagement and hearings to assess how immigration impacts local communities and ecosystems. In his closing remarks, Mark Krikorian, the Center's executive director and host of the podcast, addresses the recent announcement that the U.S. government will not be renewing the parole of Haitians and Venezuelans who were let in unlawfully by the hundreds of thousands by the Biden-Harris administration. While this may seem like a tough stance, Krikorian explains that the decision is largely symbolic with no real impact and purely designed to influence the election.HostMark Krikorian is the Executive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies.GuestJulie Axelrod is the Director of Litigation at the Center for Immigration Studies.RelatedCIS Prevails in Challenge to Biden-Harris Immigration Actions50th Anniversary of NEPA: Five Decades of Ignoring Environmental Impacts of ImmigrationIntro MontageVoices in the opening montage:Sen. The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 2: 4:05pm- It's Day 2 in Chicago for The Rich Zeoli Show—and Rich still hasn't had a Chicago deep-dish pizza OR a Chicago hotdog. 4:10pm- While appearing on CNN, David Axelrod—former Senior Advisor to President Barack Obama—said that if the election were held today, it's likely Donald Trump would defeat Kamala Harris to become president. As some on social media pointed out, Axelrod has access to internal polling data that the public has not seen. 4:15pm- While appearing on MSNBC's Morning Joe, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear outrageously stated “make him go through this” when talking about J.D. Vance and pregnancy that occurs as a result of rape. In response, Vance said on social media: “What the hell is this? Why is Andy Beshear wishing that a member of my family would get raped?!? What a disgusting person.” 4:25pm- Rich gets reprimanded for being too loud at the DNC Convention—so, now we are going to adopt a soft-spoken “NPR-style” for the remainder of the show…or at least as long as possible. 4:50pm- On Tuesday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez spoke at the Democratic National Committee Convention where she claimed that Donald Trump does not love America and would sell the country for $1 if it meant lining his pockets. But as Rich notes, even in monopoly Baltic Ave is $60!
The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (08/20/2024) 3:05pm- Day 2: The Rich Zeoli Show is broadcasting LIVE from Media Row at the Democratic National Committee Convention in Chicago, Illinois. Last night, President Joe Biden claimed that he stepped down in order to “preserve democracy”—because Kamala Harris has the best chance of defeating Donald Trump. 3:30pm- Professor John Yoo—Emanuel S. Heller Chair in Law & Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of California at Berkeley—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to preview Donald Trump's upcoming sentencing date on September 18th in his New York City-based “hush money” case. Could Trump actually be sent to prison? Plus, Professor Yoo—a Philadelphia native— reacts to J.D. Vance's cheesesteak order. Is “wiz” the best cheese option? Yoo contends it's certainly the least expensive: after all, what other cheese can you buy in a giant can? 4:05pm- It's Day 2 in Chicago for The Rich Zeoli Show—and Rich still hasn't had a Chicago deep-dish pizza OR a Chicago hotdog. 5:00pm- Alina Habba—Attorney & Senior Advisor to Donald Trump—joins The Rich Zeoli Show and reacts to Hillary Clinton's speech at the DNC Convention where the crowd began chanting “lock him up,” referencing Donald Trump's upcoming September 18th sentencing date. 5:20pm- While speaking with Margaret Hoover on PBS's “Firing Line,” Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch emphasized that an overabundance of needless laws results in average Americans being harmed. 5:40pm- Earlier in the day, Rich and Matt attended a press conference in Trump Hotel in Chicago, Illinois—though they agreed to meet in the hotel lobby at 9:40am, Matt didn't show up until 9:43am. Was he late? Or is three-minutes not that big of a deal? 5:55pm- A new, hilarious 15-second advertisement from the Trump Campaign simply consists of Kamala Harris complaining about how the cost of groceries have gone up since the pandemic—under the Biden-Harris administration! 6:05pm- Congressman Byron Donalds—U.S. Representative for Florida's 19th Congressional District—joins The Rich Zeoli Show from the Trump Hotel in Chicago, Illinois and adroitly notes that Kamala Harris has not explicitly denounced her previous policy preference of banning fracking. Instead, her campaign made the announcement which makes the proclamation easier to walk back. PLUS, Donalds discussing J.D. Vance's Philly cheesesteak order, Tim Walz's taco recipe, and Wawa vs Sheetz. 6:40pm- Daniel Turner—Founder & Executive Director of Power the Future—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss Kamala Harris's campaign claim that she's no longer interested in banning fracking. As Turner notes, she shouldn't be believed—she simply wants to appeal to Pennsylvania voters while on the campaign trail.
