The Washington Roundtable is joined by Jeff Stein, the veteran political reporter and founding editor of the newsletter “Spytalk,” to examine Donald Trump's appointment of Bill Pulte as the new acting Director of National Intelligence, a position that, in theory, oversees the C.I.A., N.S.A., F.B.I., and fifteen other agencies. Pulte has no intelligence background and no national-security experience, but does have a track record of going after the President's perceived enemies. Plus, the panel discusses a recent Washington Post investigation that raised new questions about the outgoing director, Tulsi Gabbard, and her alleged ties to a religious cult. This week's reading:“Everyone Wants to Touch the Blue Coating in the Reflecting Pool,” by Jesús Rodríguez“Chronicle of a Disaster Foretold,” by David Remnick“The Difference Between the Knicks and the White House Cage Fight,” by Adam Gopnik“How the Trump Administration Pushed Judges to Deport Children,” by E. At S&P Global's annual meeting, the company faced a shareholder proposal from the Heritage Foundation via its Free Enterprise Initiative, asking the company to report on the risks of the company’s work with activist groups like the Human Rights Campaign. Meanwhile, the company became once again embroiled in controversy over its ESG rating policies while this engagement was going on, underscoring politicization concerns. As Heritage’s Stefan Padfield told the company at its annual meeting: Another red flag calling into question the Company’s status quo is a recent letter from a coalition of 23 states questioning the lawfulness of the ESG policies of S&P Global Ratings. This letter was led in part by Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers and raises the specter of undisclosed and unlawful material conflicts of interest, as well as concerns related to antitrust violations and deceptive trade practices – all connected to the Company’s embrace of politically charged ESG. The foregoing list of red flags suggesting biased decision-making at S&P Global should make it difficult for shareholders to trust the status quo. Show Notes: Ian McNeely talks about his academic path, including a PhD in History from the University of Michigan and a position in the Society of Fellows at Harvard. He met his wife at Harvard, and they both found work at the University of Oregon where they became professors. They raised a family and lived there for 24 years. In 2024, Ian moved to UNC Chapel Hill, where he continues as a professor of history and oversees undergraduate education. The Society of Fellows When asked about the Society of Fellows, Ian explains that he thought of it as a mystique during his undergraduate years. The Society was conceived in the 1930s as an alternative to the PhD, offering young men (later women) a three-year fellowship with no academic requirements. Ian attended lavish dinners and lunches with other fellows, including senior fellows from Harvard faculty. He met his wife at the Society, and the fellowship allowed him to convert his dissertation into a book, which was crucial for his tenure. Exploring the History of Knowledge Ian explains how he and his wife co-wrote a book on the history of knowledge, covering various institutions like libraries, monasteries, and universities. He describes the different definitions of knowledge across these institutions, from written debates in libraries to scientific experiments in laboratories. Ian emphasizes the importance of institutions in defining what counts as knowledge. He discusses the role of vernacular knowledge and how it has been institutionalized over time. A Fellow's Activities Ian talks about his activities as a fellow. He describes his monastic approach, focusing on conversations with people outside his field. Ian interacted with particle physicists, art historians, and other disciplines, which broadened his perspective. He bonded with his wife, who is a medieval historian, over their mutual disdain for the Renaissance. Ian values the diverse group of equals in the Society of Fellows and the opportunity to explore various aspects of knowledge. The Politicization of Higher Education The conversation turns to Ian's current role as Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education at UNC Chapel Hill. He discusses the politicization of higher education and the challenges of the proliferation of knowledge. Ian emphasizes the importance of helping students diversify their intellectual portfolios to hedge against unpredictability, and he expresses optimism that AI will be a force multiplier rather than a replacement for human judgment and expertise. The Impact of AI on Undergraduate Education Ian believes AI will not replace human judgment but will be a force multiplier for routine tasks. He stresses the importance of communication skills, teamwork, ethical judgment, and aesthetic judgment in the face of AI. Ian advises students to use AI as a refinement tool after doing cognitive heavy lifting themselves. He emphasizes the importance of preserving curiosity-driven knowledge alongside applied knowledge, and he states that rote-type learning will not be needed while high-level skills will be sought by employers. The Changing Definition of Knowledge Ian explains that, over the past two decades, the shift towards justifying knowledge in economic or scientific terms, especially in the United States. He talks about the value of interpretation and judgement, and how he is concerned that students are losing the ability to do the cognitive heavy lifting of assessing research and determining the gaps in information. Ian's administrative career reflects his efforts to balance these two aspects of knowledge. Ian advises students to use AI as a refinement tool after doing their own cognitive heavy lifting, but he stresses the importance of taking time in nature to write by hand and give the mind time to think. The Meeting of Medieval and Modern History Ian talks about the difference between his wife's studies in medieval history to his own. Creative thinking plays a role in the study of medieval history where there are gaps in knowledge and errors of interpretation; this contrasts with Ian's field of study which drew research from a high level of bureaucracy. He explains why he structured their book, Reinventing Knowledge, to combat information overload. Ian shares his experience of empowering others in his professional life and giving up the desire to control outcomes. Ian also reflects on the importance of humility and the value of learning a new language to gain a deeper understanding of other cultures. Harvard Reflections Ian mentions Math 25 with Mark McConnell, which taught him rigorous thinking and precision, and he highlights a course on European Political development 1850 to 1950 by Peter Baldwin, which inspired him to become a European historian. Ian states that he values the bridge between the arts and sciences provided by these courses. 本期的主播和嘉宾: 小华:媒体人 一闻:一个对地铁比手机更上瘾的记者 Lei:风险投资人 【 What We Talked About】 If the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022 was the moment AI entered the public consciousness, then the week in early 2026 when Anthropic was blacklisted by the White House may well be the moment AI entered politics. A commercial company, for refusing to let its product be used for surveillance and autonomous weapons, was placed on a list previously reserved for foreign adversaries — while its biggest competitor signed a Pentagon contract the very same day. In this episode, we sit down with Yiwen, host of Pixel Perfect, and Lei, a Silicon Valley investor, to unpack how AI became the most politically charged issue of the moment. Who gets to draw the red lines? When Super PACs start spending AI money to swing the midterms, when data centers push up electricity bills across red and blue states alike, when American public sentiment toward AI has fallen through the floor — is AI's "nuclear moment" a technological singularity, or a political one? We also get into the two starkly different realities the U.S. and China are living through on this front. The Politicization of the American Legal System by Dr. James M. Copas LLM, LLM https://www.amazon.com/Politicization-American-Legal-System-ebook/dp/B0GHZY8PGT The politicization of the American legal system has emerged as a critical concern, raising questions about the integrity, impartiality, and functionality of judicial institutions. This book examines how political ideologies influence the judiciary, the consequences of partisan appointments, and the broader implications of public perception regarding judicial neutrality. Using a combination of historical analysis and contemporary case studies, this commentary explores the systemic and institutional dynamics that have led to the politicization of legal processes in the United States. The paper further evaluates potential reforms to depoliticize the judiciary and restore public confidence in the rule of law. Academic footnotes are provided to support the analysis.

One of the problems with increased polarization is that everything gets politicized, including simple acts of charity. Our guest on the program this week is an American journalist who's been tracking this trend in liberal and leftist circles and he's published an essay making the argument that helping your neighbour is an affirmation of our shared humanity — not a “radical act of resistance.”Ryan Zickgraf is an American journalist and a columnist at UnHerd. President Trump's growing frustration with the Federal Reserve's commitment to political independence reached fever pitch over the weekend when Fed Chair Jerome Powell annouced the DOJ has opened a criminal investigation into the Fed. Powell called the probe “unprecedented” and said the Fed uses data, not politics, to make interest rate decisions. In this episode, we get context on the situation from economist Julia Coronado — including how the investigation could have an impact on financial markets.

It's been almost a decade since then-House Intelligence Committee chairman Devin Nunes first launched his investigation with now-FBI director Kash Patel into the scandal that became known as “Russiagate.”His watershed memo back in 2018—dubbed the “Nunes memo”—detailed what he describes as grave abuses in how the FBI obtained surveillance warrants under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) to surveil Donald Trump's 2016 campaign and later the first Trump administration. It's “the biggest scandal in U.S. history, by a long way,” he says.In July 2025, the Trump administration released new documents shedding more light on the Russia probe, revealing the creation of an intelligence community assessment (ICA) at President Barack Obama's behest that alleged Russian President Vladimir Putin had interfered in the presidential election in order to help Trump.Nunes is currently serving as chair of the President's Intelligence Advisory Board, a body created in 1956 during the Eisenhower era to advise the president on U.S. intelligence activities and provide an external check on the intelligence community. In this episode, we sit down to reflect on the “Russiagate” saga, almost a decade later, and what accountability he'd like to see.We also dive into his work as CEO of Truth Media & Technology Group (TMTG), which owns Truth Social.TMTG recently announced an unexpected merger with the pioneering nuclear fusion company TAE Technologies. Why did they choose to make this move, and why is he convinced nuclear fusion technology will be critical to America's future?Views expressed in this video are opinions of the host and the guest, and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times.
As the year wraps up, I've been looking back at some of my favorite chats from the shows I visited this season. New episodes return January 7. On this episode of the Elevated Thoughts podcast, I sat down with two thoughtful first-time dads to talk about the topics parents are wrestling with right now. We got into the messy middle of vaccine hesitancy, why so many families feel caught between loud opinions, and how I work through those conversations in my practice with honesty and calm. We also talked about what it's really like to raise kids in an online world where everyone feels permission to comment on your choices. I shared my own experience as a pediatrician and mom. Why I struggled with decisions around my son's early medical care, how I think about benefit and risk, and why empathy has to stay at the center of these discussions. We moved into milestones, feeding, toddler chaos, and the everyday pressure parents feel to get everything “right.” We discuss: My own experience with hesitancy after my son's traumatic birth The rise of online misinformation and why parents feel so unsure What the vitamin K refusal trend is actually putting babies at risk for Government involvement in vaccines and where things get complicated The truth about financial incentives for pediatricians Milestones, late walking, and why parents shouldn't blame themselves How humor and connection help parents through the daily grind Why dads' voices matter in parenting spaces and how they shape the culture Elevated Thoughts is restoring positive discourse between right & left. SummaryIn this conversation, Troy Cross discusses the transformative experience of parenthood and its impact on personal values and perspectives. He draws parallels between this experience and the skepticism surrounding disruptive technologies like Bitcoin. Cross emphasizes the importance of overcoming fear and negativity associated with new technologies, advocating for a more imaginative and open-minded approach to their potential. He concludes by highlighting the need for a shift in how we perceive technology's role in our lives, urging listeners to think critically and creatively about the future.TakeawaysParenthood transforms values and perspectives significantly.Skepticism towards new technologies is often rooted in fear.Bitcoin represents a shift in how we view money.Critics of technology often fail to imagine its potential benefits.Fear of technology can stem from cognitive biases and social influences. Not all technology will bring happiness or fulfillment.Abundant energy can drastically improve quality of life.We must think like engineers, not just socially.Expectations of technology should be realistic and grounded.Imagination is key to embracing the future of technology.Chapters00:00 Imagining a New Future with Bitcoin and AI00:22 Tennessee as a Hub for Innovation03:05 The Politicization of Bitcoin and Technology's Role in Society10:31 bp soundbite.mp4Keywordsparenthood, disruptive technology, Bitcoin, skepticism, fear of technology, transformative experiences, future of technology, imagination, social bias, energy poverty
Across the globe, memorial and grave sites are being increasingly weaponized in conflicts and politicized by parties to advance agendas. Here, Carol S. Lilly examines ideas of death, politics, memory, ideology and nationalism in the former Yugoslav republics of Bosnia & Hercegovina, Croatia, and Serbia to shine fresh light on cemetery culture in 20th-century Europe.More specifically, Death and Burial in Socialist Yugoslavia: The Politicization of Cemeteries and Ethnic Conflict in the Balkans (Bloomsbury, 2024) argues that while the CPY created its own communities of the dead in postwar Partisan Cemeteries, it failed to do the same for civilian cemeteries in ways that might reinforce its ideals of secularism, pluralism, and brotherhood and unity. Moreover, the communist regime left the previous system of ethno-religious segregation in place, further isolating Catholics, Orthodox, Muslims and Jews who continued to be buried in separate locations. Finally, it explicitly politicized burial rites and grave markers, making cemeteries into legitimate spaces of political discourse. As a result, by the time Yugoslavia disintegrated in the early 1990s, dead bodies and cemeteries had become a concerted weapon of war in the ongoing ethnic conflict. Ultimately, then, this timely study reveals for the first time the extent to which the communist regime not only failed to created their own communities of the dead but also further divided and alienated living communities in Yugoslavia. If you've listened to this show over the years, chances are that you've heard our guest. If you haven't, get ready for a solid dose of the straight up good stuff. Rob Serra (@SerraRob) is back for the annual 9/11 episode and this one hits hard. Host and founder Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) was there at Ground Zero on 9/11. So was Rob. It was famously his first day on the job. Yes, you read that right, his first day as a New York City firefighter was Tuesday, September 11th, 2001. They didn't meet then, but they were both there and it's played a massive role in their lives and indeed in the lives of every American. If you weren't alive then, it's hard to explain how much the world has changed as a result (more on that in the podcast). But they were there. In the middle of all of the destruction. And listening to them discuss what happened then and what has happened since can teach us all about what it means to be an American— the good and the bad. And as the country experiences the staggering effects of more political violence, and seems more divided than ever, this is a conversation everyone needs to listen to and absorb. It's a gut-check on a nation grappling with its past and its future. It's a raw, authentic conversation about service, sacrifice, and the enduring fight for those who ran toward the fire and the driving call behind why we must always stay vigilant. Every episode of Independent Americans with Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) breaks down the most important news stories–and offers light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. It's independent content for independent Americans. In these trying times especially, Independent Americans is your trusted place for independent news, politics, inspiration and hope. The podcast that helps you stay ahead of the curve–and stay vigilant. Go Deeper: Hear Paul's full conversation with Rob Serra from Episode 2 of Independent Americans. Victor Davis Hanson explains why this was not simply a tragedy, but an act of evil, and why the media and political leaders refuse to have an honest discussion about the factors behind it on today's episode of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words.” “They won't have any discussion over transgenderism. This falls in the broader category of exempt DEI woke topics, but I think we should talk about this. This is the fourth or fifth incident—I don't even like the word "incident"—occurrence of transgendered shooters who are protected by authorities. “We were told, "Be careful about Big Pharma. Be careful about Big Med." All of those worries and prohibitions and cautions were thrown out the window, as were SSRI antidepressants. These were selective serotonin prohibitors. In other words, they altered the chemistry of the brain, supposedly, to correct mental disturbances, depression, bipolarity. But they're very dangerous drugs. But when it came to the exempt topic of transgenderism, suddenly the society was supposed to accept that this was not a mental disorder. It was not a rare occurrence. It was a national crisis where large percentages of the population were transgendering.”
A mass shooting at a Minneapolis Catholic school leaves two children dead and 17 others injured, with investigators probing the suspect's anti-Christian writings and ties to the community. Mayor Jacob Frey and progressive commentators deflect anger over the attack by criticizing Christians and dismissing prayer. Prosecutors and sheriffs outline their evidence against the Haros, deny reports of a jailhouse confession, and say they are confident in securing a conviction even if they are unable to locate the body. Facing historic lows in favorability, Democrats weigh an unusual national convention ahead of the 2026 midterms to boost fundraising and media attention. In his second term, Donald Trump has upended many American institutions, but perhaps none more than the Department of Justice. He's filled the DOJ with lackeys, like AG Pam Bondi, who are corrupting our system of justice in ways never seen before. We're joined by two veterans of the DOJ: Barbara McQuade, professor at University of Michigan Law School, and Daniel Richman, professor at Columbia Law School. We discuss the disturbing tendencies of Trump's Justice Department: from emphasizing immigration enforcement, to investigating Trump's political rivals, to firing agents en masse for prosecuting the Jan 6th cases, and so on. The damage being done will take years, if not decades, to undo. Plus, the Epstein Files continue to impact Trump's presidency. Why is Ghislane Maxwell being treated so well? It's almost as if Trump hopes she'll exonerate him in exchange for a sweetheart deal.
