The 1980 Philadelphia Phillies delivered the most celebrated season in franchise history to that point, capturing their first-ever World Series title after nearly a century of trying. Managed by Dallas Green, the team combined veteran leadership, clutch hitting, and a deep pitching staff to finish 91–71 and win the National League East in a tightly contested race.Mike Schmidt led the charge with an MVP season, blasting 48 home runs and driving in 121 runs while playing elite defense at third base. He was the undisputed anchor of the lineup. Pete Rose, in his second year with the Phillies, brought postseason experience and grit, while Greg Luzinski, Bake McBride, and Garry Maddox rounded out a dangerous offense. The pitching staff was anchored by Steve Carlton, who went 24–9 and won his third Cy Young Award. Tug McGraw provided energy and reliability out of the bullpen, delivering several key performances in high-leverage situations down the stretch and into the postseason. The Phillies survived a dramatic NLCS against the Houston Astros, considered one of the greatest playoff series ever played. In the World Series, they defeated the Kansas City Royals in six games, with Schmidt and Carlton leading the way and McGraw striking out Willie Wilson to seal the title. The 1980 Phillies ended decades of frustration for the franchise and their fanbase, finally securing a championship for a team that had long carried the burden of being baseball's oldest and most title-starved club.- 3B - Mike Schmidt- LF-RF - Lonnie Smith- RF - Bake McBride- LF - Greg Luzinski- 2B - Manny Trillo- 1B - Pete Rose- CF - Garry Maddox- C - Bob Boone- SS - Larry Bowa- SP - Bob Walk- SP - Steve Carlton- SP-RP - Randy Lerch- SP - Dick Ruthven- RP - Tug McGraw- RP - Ron Reed

There's no escaping Donald Trump, unfortunately, in this week's episode as we begin by picking apart the tariffs he introduced last week.Has he condemned the US to recession? How did he come up with tariffs he placed on each country? Has he lost the support of the billionaires whose businesses are dependent on freedom of trade?Amidst this Trumpian economic doom and gloom Lesley highlights the work of We Don't Have Time. To listen to the views of its CEO Ingmar Rentzhog click this linkhttps://app.wedonthavetime.org/posts/6a458e55-a614-4886-b348-242282e514c7Trump also welcomed Netanyahu to the White House where the two leaders openly discussed, once again, the ethnic cleansing of Gaza. We look at this plus the massacre of Palestinian paramedics and the cover up by Israel that unravelled in the light of video footage recorded by one of the workers murdered by the IDF. We also examine the links between the UK Labour Party at the highest level and Labour Friends of Israel and question the influence of the LFI over UK government policy. On the domestic front there's the announcement by Patrick Harvie that he won't be standing for co-leadership of the Scottish Greens. Lesley speculates on who might run in the upcoming election and what the contest could say about the relationship between the party and its MSPs and the party's direction of travel.Lesley also pays tribute to Christina McKelvie and Willie Wilson both sad recent losses.Christina and Willie were stalwart proponents of Scottish independence and this week saw two polls which showed increasing support for Welsh independence. We discuss. Finally while in Donegal Lesley saw at first hand the effects of radical, progressive land reform and asks when will Scotland take note. ★ Support this podcast ★

Tonight on The Impact with Big Chuck! We are excited to welcome our special guest, Willie Wilson aka Willie Will, to the show. While we will be speaking with Willie Will tonight, we want to acknowledge his incredible brother, Jazz Digga. Together, they have made a significant impact on the urban Gospel music scene, but tonight, our focus is solely on Willie Will.Willie Will and his brother, Jazz Digga, have been creating music that is both soul-edifying and culturally relevant. From a very young age, Willie Will began expressing himself through thought-provoking rhymes and soul-stirring melodies. Growing up in a musical household, with their mother as a choir director and their father as a quartet singer, music came naturally to them. Performing alongside their family in the group Pop Heavenly and The Heavenly Boyz, Willie Will found an early avenue to express his creativity.Spending his formative years moving between Seattle and New Jersey, Willie Will's musical talents were influenced by hip hop and R&B artists such as Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, Stevie Wonder, and Boyz II Men. As he came to know Jesus for himself, his passion for spreading the Gospel became evident in his music. With over 15 solo albums, Willie Will has made a significant contribution to the urban Gospel music scene.Tonight, we will also listen to one of Willie Will's inspiring songs, "Tis So Sweet," off their album "Gospelz." The entire album features remixed gospel tracks that we all used to listen to growing up in church. You can check it out on YouTube and experience the powerful message and soulful harmonies he brings to the stage.Don't miss this inspiring episode tonight on The Impact with Big Chuck!

The Royals celebrated the Kansas City career of Lorenzo Cain over the weekend with a contract-signing ceremony that allowed him to retire as Royal. On today's episode of SportsBeat KC, The Star's sports podcast, you'll hear from Cain about his KC career, with an emphasis on the 2014 and 2015 postseasons. The occasion got us wondering about who else might receive such a ceremony with the Royals, and/or eventually join the team's hall of fame. Manager Ned Yost will be the first from the group to enter the hall at a September ceremony. But who else? It's a little tricky for this reason: George Brett, Frank White, Amos Otis, Hal McRae and Willie Wilson played most of (or all of) their respective MLB careers in Kansas City. They're the franchise's top-five players in games played. Cain tweet The second championship stretch for the Royals was populated with players who spent eight or fewer seasons with the Royals: Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, Alcides Escobar, Wade Davis and Greg Holland, among others. But player movement is more common now and should be taken into account when considering such an honor. Besides, there are Hall of Fame players from the earlier era who weren't Royals lifers (for instance, John Mayberry spent just six of his 15 big-league seasons in Kansas City). Our list of players from the 2014-15 era who should enter the Royals Hall of Fame includes Salvador Perez, Alex Gordon, Cain, Hosmer, Moustakas, Escobar, Kelvin Herrera, Davis and Holland. Maybe the HDH bullpen enters as a trio. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

In the early 1980s, Black students and the African American community at American University had been demonstrating for more access and inclusion in the university's community services. One of the demands was for four hours of time every Saturday on Radio station WAMU, the campus station. This demand was met and suddenly Black students and the community were pouring into the station on Saturdays to make radio, to learn the craft, to be heard. Judi Moore Smith heard the call and soon was producing 10 minutes every week during that four-hour Saturday slot. Someone heard one of Judi's pieces and urged her to apply for funding. She was already going to Union Temple Baptist Church in Anacostia near Washington DC, mesmerized by the preaching of Rev. Willie Wilson. She began to cross the country interviewing preachers and ministers, capturing their speaking styles, their preaching styles, listening, watching, realizing these were not only religious men delivering weekly sermons—these were performing artists. Judi lit the path with this piece and the creation of a deep archive of Black history and creative expression. It is one of the projects that has inspired us over the years—the spirit, the stylizing, the swagger, the soul, the poetry—and the music. Judi asked one of the preachers, Reverend Robert Pruitt, to do the narration for the piece and gathered a kind of congregation in the studio with him to enact call and response. Davia reached out to Judi this year to see if she had a copy of the piece. It was created in the days way before the internet and the archiving of everything. Luckily we found a cassette of it at the Pacifica Archives. Special Thanks to Judi Moore Latta for all her pioneering radio documentary work especially about Black culture, history and expression and her decades of teaching and working with hundreds of young people across the years. And thanks to Pacifica Archive. The Kitchen Sisters Present is produced by The Kitchen Sisters, Davia Nelson and Nikki Silva, with Brandi Howell and Nathan Dalton.
