We have conversations aimed at creating a better world with more individual freedom and less unnecessary suffering.
Welcome to The Chronically Human Podcast Ep. 36 Our guest today is Dr. Peter Grinspoon. He is a primary care doctor in Boston, teaches at Harvard Medical School, is the author of “Free Refills”, a book detailing his addiction and recovery with pain pills, and he is an advocate for legalizing and utilizing Cannabis as Medicine. (At the 38 minute mark we had an issue with the audio. There is an echo or reverb when Dr. Grinspoon speaks. I apologize for this. We’ve left that portion of the conversation in because it's full of great information even though the audio isn't perfect) We have a great discussion about his unique perspective on the perceived opioid crisis, his take on how the government’s response to reducing opioid overdose deaths has negatively impacted people in chronic pain, and his work advocating for the use of Medical Cannabis. He explains why the current "Reefer Madness" proponents are wrong and exposes who the institutional forces are that are working to keep Cannabis illegal. We also talk about his father Dr. Lester Grinspoon and his pionnering work advocating for Cannabis and psychedelics. https://www.petergrinspoon.com Dr. Peter Grinspoon's Book "Free Refills" https://www.amazon.com/Free-Refills-Doctor-Confronts-Addiction-ebook/dp/B00Z7J7BEM You can find Peter's artciles on The Opioid Crisis, Medical Cannabis and Health and Wellness at the Harvard Medical School's Blog https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/author/pgrinspoon Follow Peter on Twitter: @Peter_Grinspoon Peter is an active member of "Doctors For Cannabis Regulation" which is an organziation of Doctors who are working to legalize Cannabis and educate other healthcare professionals about using Cannabis as medicine. https://dfcr.org I exercise my health freedom by consuming Kratom. I apologize for the quality of the audio in the last 20 minutes. The Skype connection went in and out and we weren’t aware of the reverb/echo issue until we re-listened to the conversation. I wasn’t able to fix it. I decided to leave it in even with the audio issue because Peter provided a lot of great information. I understand audio quality is important and we strive to do our best to present useful information in the best possible way. Thank you for joining us today. My name is Brad Miller and this is The Chronically Human Podcast where we have discussion aimed at creating a better world with more individual freedom and less unnecessary suffering. Our guests today are Brandon Ash and his Mother Ginger Ash. Brandon has suffered from a severe case of Crohn’s disease for over twenty years, he shares his story about how this terrible disease destroyed his life, how the medical establishment didn’t have the answers to help him and how he got his life back by using Medical Cannabis and Kratom. Ginger shares her story of what its like being a mother with a son with a terrible chronic illness, how painful it was for her to see her son’s life destroyed by it, her original opposition to Brandon when he’d started using Cannabis and how she now will tell anyone who will stand still long enough about her son’s amazing transformation from sick and suffering to being healthier and happier than he’s been in over twenty years. I really enjoyed the conversation with Brandon and Ginger because it is something I can relate to. I was diagnosed at age 11 with a severe case of Ulcerative Colitis. None of the treatments worked for me so I had to have my entire colon removed. Since then I’ve had multiple surgeries, tens of hospital stays and over a hundred doctors visits. And during the last thirty years my mom has been a huge advocate for me as well. I exercise my health freedom by using Kratom and CBD oil to help manage my chronic pain. The only Kratom I trust is Urban Ice Organics. I would recommend everyone do their own research to see if its right for you. If you’ve decided to take Kratom you should get the cleanest and highest quality you can find, and for me that’s Urban Ice Organics. They also offer an amazing CBD oil as well. You can find Urban Ice Organics at https://naturalorganix.com Use the Promo Code “ChronicallyHuman20” to get 20% off your next order. If you’d like to learn more about my experience with Kratom email me brad@chronicallyhuman.co This isn’t medical advice. Everyone is so different and everyone’s situation is different. Do your own research. Brandon and Ginger are simply sharing how Cananbis and Kratom impacted their lives . Thanks for listening and let us know your experience with using Kratom and Cannabis. The more we share the more we all learn.

Pat Anson of The Pain News Network is our guest today. The Pain News Network is a media outlet that covers the political and personal side of pain. Unfortunately millions of people in America are being undertreated or denied treatment for pain. A big reason for that is the CDC guidelines that came out in 2016. We discuss the origins of those guidelines and also the most recent comments by the FDA and CDC regarding them. Pat and I discuss Medical Marijuana and also Kratom as solutions some people are turning to for pain relief. Pat had a great point during the conversation : that even if you are not in pain now one day you could be and that makes this an issue that is really important for us all. Check out Pain News Network here: https://www.painnewsnetwork.org Twitter: @PainNewsNetwork I exercise my health freedom by using Kratom to help with my chronic pain. After years of research the only brand I trust is Urban Ice Organics. You can find them at https://naturalorganix.com The owners of Urban Ice Organics are the producers of the Documentary “A leaf of Faith” directed by Chris Bell, they are the brand that Chris Bell gave to Joe Rogan during his appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience and they test all their Kratom to ensure there aren’t any heavy metals, salmonella and other adulterants in it. Having been chronically ill all my life I am very cautious about what I put in my body and before I found Urban Ice Organics I was hesitant to try Kratom, not because I thought Kratom was unsafe (according to my research) but because I couldn’t find a reputable source. I thank God I found Urban Ice Organics. You can use the promo code "ChronicallyHuman20" at check out to get 20% at checkout. I urge everyone to do their own research. If you’d like to learn more about my experience with Kratom email me: brad@chronicallyhuman.co If you’d like to know more about Urban Ice Organics and Kratom please check out The Chronically Human Podcast Ep. 25 when I spoke with the owner, Kelly Dunn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOn-rJeqq0I CDC Guidelines for 2016: https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/65/rr/rr6501e1.htm CDC comment 4/10/19 (they finally admit there “may” have been unintended consequences) https://img1.wsimg.com/blobby/go/3d70257f-a143-4a5b-b9df-f7d265df0d3d/downloads/Alford%20Final%20.pdf?ver=1554957603807 FDA letter 4/9/19 on Forced Tapers https://img1.wsimg.com/blobby/go/3d70257f-a143-4a5b-b9df-f7d265df0d3d/downloads/ FDA%20Drug%20Safety%20Communication%20Opioid%20Tapering.pdf?ver=1554957604053 FDA forced Tapers: https://www.painnewsnetwork.org/stories/2019/4/9/fda-warns-about-fast-opioid-tapers Letter from 300 Health Professionals to the CDC
Josh Bloom is researcher, journalist, scientist and President of the American Council on Science and Health, which describes itself as a pro-science consumer advocacy group that goes after what they think is bad science. Josh and I don’t agree on many issues but we do agree that the government’s response to the so-called opioid crisis has left millions of people in chronic pain suffering unnecessarily. Josh has done a lot of great work debunking the CDC’s numbers relating to the opioid crisis and exposing how as more draconian measures are instituted to restrict access to pain medicines - more people in pain are suffering and more people are dying of overdose. We talk about the real cause of the opioid crisis and how those in power and those who seek to benefit from that power have manipulated the data to present a false narrative to the American people. This is very emotional issue for me since I’ve been in chronic pain for over thirty years and have seen first hand how people in pain are treated in the current environment of opioid hysteria. I exercise my health freedom by taking Kratom for my chronic pain. Kratom isn’t for everyone and I recommend everyone do their own research to see if its right them. Thats exactly what I did and I found it extremely helpful for helping improve my over well being and help with the pain. The only Kratom I trust is from Urban Ice Organics which you can find at: https://naturalorganix.com Use the promo code “ChronciallyHuman20 with no spaces - to get 20% off your next order. This is the analogy that I wanted to make when Josh was talking about Fentanyl being a unique event in American history. In reality Prohibition creates predictable and negative results. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_law_of_prohibition I don’t agree with Josh on many topics but we do agree on how it's truly terrible how those in pain are being treated today and its our own government wh
Phil Hinson is on the board of Americans For Fair Taxation and he is a proponent of The Fair Tax which is a National Consumption Tax designed to replace All Federal Income Taxes. Would you like to never again have to pay Federal Income Taxes not like Wesley Snipes tried but with an alternate tax system that would eliminate the IRS, eliminate all Federal Income taxes (including payroll taxes) on all individuals and all corporations and still provide the same amount or more revenue for the Federal Government? How would you feel if April 15th was just another day instead of the deadline to file and pay your Federal Income Taxes? What would the economic landscape of America look like without the IRS and without Federal Income Taxes? Please stick around for the entire episode as Phil Hinson explains The Fair Tax and how we can eliminate The IRS. Americans For Fair Taxation https://fairtax.org Neal Boortz’s book about the Fair Tax on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Fair-Tax-Book-Saying-Goodbye/dp/0060875496 Phil has been an advocate for the Fair Tax since the 1990’s. He explains how The Fair Tax can be easily implemented, how it would totally eliminate the IRS and all Federal income taxes, and how it will free up American Businesses to be more competitive in the World Economy and raise the standard of living for us all. In the second half of the interview Phil mentions that he believes the best path to getting The Fair Tax passed is through Constitutional means. He explains how the Conventions of State organization is working to help eliminate the 16th Amendment which would lead to the abolition of the Federal Income Tax and the IRS and would then be replaced with The Fair Tax system. https://conventionofstates.com https://conventionofstates.com/cos-simulation https://conventionofstates.com/resources The Fair Tax is a fascinating proposal and I think it’s important to talk about alternatives to our current tax system which is complicated, corrupt, extremely invasive, and it costs hundreds of billions of dollars to comply with, which drags down the GDP by up to 5% per year. Just imagine if the U.S. economy were growing at 7% per year! Phil explains how the Fair Tax isn’t aligned with any political party and is specifically designed to appeal to those on the Left and the Right. According to Phil, The Fair Tax is revenue neutral or will actually bring in more revenue for the Federal Government, meaning there’s no change to current Federal Spending, and in addition it has a monthly rebate that ensures that those below the poverty line pay zero Federal Taxes. I would prefer to live in a more voluntary society where no force is used to fund the government. But until then I’m open to learning more about The Fair Tax. I exercise my health freedom by taking Kratom to help with ease my chronic pain and with improving my overall well being. I recommend that everyone do their own research on Kratom to see if it’s the right choice for them. If you choose to take Kratom, the only brand I trust is from:
David Whitsett is a retired professor of psychology who is best known for teaching a class dubbed "Marathon 101" and his book he co-authored "The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer", which details the mental and physical training regiment he developed while teaching over 200 college students who were non-runners, how to finish their first Marathon. We have a great discussion about his book, why he started teaching the class "Marathon 101" and how the psychological techniques that he developed for the class can work for anyone to help them strive for and accomplish difficult and distant goals. David explains how to get rid of negative thoughts, how to utilize the theatre of your mind to rehearse success, and how to develop an internal locus of control to live a happier and more successful life. He details how you can control your attitude, increase motivation, and push through adversity by training your mind with simple mental training exercises. In 2007, seven months after I had a very painful and complicated surgery, I used David's book to train for and complete my first Marathon. The next year my mom used the physical and mental training regiment from the book to complete her first half-marathon. I am living proof that the training in the book works. I also still use many of the psychological techniques in the book to this day. This episode is for anyone who is thinking about training for their first marathon or are looking for powerful proven psychological techniques that they can use to train their mind and body to attain the goals that are important to them. David is the owner and CEO of ABC Packaging Direct and you can find more about his company's products at: https://www.standuppouches.net/blog/author/david-marinac David and I talk about marketing, sales and motivation in the modern age. David is an extremely positive guy who has a lot of great information to share about finding success in life and in business. Books mentioned: David during the show recommended the book "Psychocybernetics" and I’m re-listening to the audio version. The book isn't about cyborgs it's instead about practical ways we can use the mental machinery we have to live better lives. Dr. Maltz the creator of psychocybernetics writes about how your self image really determines your actions and only by changing how you view yourself will you be able to change your life. I highly recommend the book. https://www.amazon.com/New-Psycho-Cybernetics-Maxwell-Maltz/dp/0735202850 The book I mentioned and also found extremely valuable is Dr. Jordan Peterson’s book: https://www.amazon.com/12-Rules-Life-Antidote-Chaos/dp/0345816021 Correction: During the podcast I mentioned the Book “Self Help” and the author was Samuel Smiles and it was written in 1859. Peter C. Earle is a former trader and global financial analyst on Wall Street, an Austrian Economist, and Research Fellow at the American Institute for Economic Research He is also the author of the book "A Century of Anarchy: Neutral Moresnet - Through The Revisionist Lens" (it's a short book but its vital for everyone who cares about the cause of liberty and the E-book versison - which I purchased - is currnetly only $2.99 on Amazon!) https://www.amazon.com/Century-Anarchy-Neutral-Moresnet-Revisionist-ebook/dp/B00KB6DLUO We spend a good part of our conversation talking about the fascinating story of Neutral Moresnet. It was a tiny territory in Europe that for over a hundred years, demonstrated that when people are left alone, an emergent order of peace and prosperity can be created, through voluntary cooperation without the need of a central authority. He discusses how Moresnet came into existence, the unique competing systems of justice its citizens utilized, what led to the destruction of this beautiful accidental experiment in anarchy, and the lessons this forgotten chapter of history can teach us today. The Story of Moresnet is one that everyone who is interested in discovering real life examples of peaceful anarchy in action, should be familiar with. Pete reminds us as well that Anarchy doesn't mean the absence of rules it simply means the absence of rulers. Neutral Moresent is an example of what can happen when people are alone and in peace. Pete also gives his thoughts on the current resurgence of Socialist thought, the power of decentralization to create more freedom and his common sense approach to spreading the ideas of individual liberty, peace and prosperity to others. Pete is a very optimistic about the future and gives examples that support his belief. Kelly Dunn is the owner of Urban Ice Organics. It’s the fastest growing Kratom company in the country and for good reason. They lab test all of their products and they adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices. Urban Ice Organics is the only brand that I trust. https://naturalorganix.com We talk about the science and safety of Kratom, the current state of the Kratom industry and the personal reasons why he produced the documentary “A Leaf Of Faith”. Kelly discusses why he uses Kratom, the growing number of people who are using it to improve their health and wellbeing and why its important to keep Kratom legal. Kelly is doing a lot to keep Kratom legal and to find out the truth about it. He supports the Scientific Research on Kratom by the University of Florida and he’s working on a sequel to “A Leaf of Faith". I firmly believe that the documentary "A Leaf Of Faith" played a huge role in helping to keep Kratom Legal. I made my final decision to try their brand after watching Chris Bell, the Director of “A Leaf of Faith” discuss and share Kratom with Joe Rogan, on his podcast back in 2016 and I’m glad I did. Max Borders and I discuss the nature of charity, how he's using technology to create the voluntary social safety net of the future and viable voluntary options for creating alternatives to coercive institutions. Max is a former editor at The Foundation For Economic Education, the author of "The Social SIngularity" and the Executive Director of Social Evolution. We discuss his work using technology to create voluntary social safety nets known as Mutual Aide or Mutual Benefit Societies, the long and fascinating history of the social safety net before the Welfare State and how those who want to live in a free society can and should help those who are in need. I highly recommend Max's Book "The Social Singularity" where he goes in depth with many of the subjects we cover. This episode is a little on the technical side but these discussions I believe are important becuse cryptocurrencies, tokens, DOA's, and other blockchain based technologies have the power to help create more freedom and less suffering for us all. Phillip Zweig joins us to talk about the secretive, massive, and corrupt Group Purchasing Organizations that drive up healthcare costs, decrease medical innovations and cause critical drug shortages in the United States. http://www.philliplzweig.com Phillip Zweig is an award winning financial journalist who is now the Executive Director of Physicians Against Drug shortages, which is a grass root group of physicians and other healthcare professionals working to end drug shortages in America by lobbying Congress to repeal the 1987 Medicare anti-kickback "safe harbor" provision. This ill-considered statute exempted GPOs from criminal prosecution for taking vendor kickbacks and undermined competition in the generic drug/ healthcare supplies industry. Deirdre McCloskey is a world renowned Chicago School economist, historian, rhetorician, who describes herself as a "Christian Libertarian". She joins us to talk about her concept of Bourgeois Virtues and why their adoption and practice have led to the advancement that the human species has created in the last 300 years. Even if you’re not interested in economics, know that economists are interested in you, and in particular they are interested in using the force of government to nudge, encourage or outright change your behavior. Professor McCloskey taught Economics, History, English and Communication at The University of Illinois at Chicago from 2000-2015. She is the author of 17 books and over 400 scholarly articles. http://www.deirdremccloskey.com She explains how Bourgeois Virtues differ from the Virtues of the Aristocracy and Peasantry of old and how that they allow individuals to peacefully cooperate and compete in a free market economy, which in the end enriches us all. We discus her trilogy of Books based on the concept of Bourgeois Virtues, the central problem of economics, as well as the Two Secret Sins of Economics which affects everyone. Bourgeois Virtues by Deidre McCloskey We cover a lot in this episode including the philosophical, religious and psychological aspects of economics , how advertising and sales are a natural part of human nature, and how even birds use persuasion to find a mate. She describes what we are seeing today as a form of "Slow Socialism" which uses taxation and regulations to redistribute income. We also discuss how the rhetoric is being ramped up through proposals, like the Green New Deal, to create "Fast Socialism" which has had disastrous outcomes in the past. Her explanation of the Secret Sins of Economics is extremely enlightening and explains a lot of the reason why personal freedoms have eroded in the last 100 years. Most mainstream economists, especially those who see themselves as social engineers, commit these "sins" without even realizing it. The consequences of these "sins" create the excuses and the explanations for why politicians and bureaucrats should interfere into the voluntary transactions of individuals. She explains how there really isn’t a public or private sphere, there are only voluntary or involuntary transactions. Professor McCloskey also warns us about the dangers of Envy and that it is truly insatiable. Instead of envying others we should seek to trade our gifts with others in voluntary transactions, which creates a benefit for all. Professor McCloskey is extremely optimistic about the future of humanity because of the unprecedented spread and acceptance of Bourgeois Virtues across the world, which at their core are about voluntary transactions, persuasion and the belief that everyone is created equal. Steve Ariens joins us today. He is better known online as Pharmacist Steve. Steve has been a licensed pharmacist for over 50 years. He's worked at hospitals, nursing homes, and he owned and operated an independent pharmacy for 20 years. Since retiring he has dedicated his time to documenting how the response to the opioid crisis has hurt chonic pain patients. This is is a personal issue for Steve as well, his wife has been a chronic pain pateint for over 20 years. We discuss the origins of the opioid crisis, who are profiting from it, how those in pain are suffering from the government and corporate medicine's reponsed to it, and how government intervention into the healthcare market and specifically the War on Drugs, have led to many of the problems we are facing today. Dr. William Anderson joins us today. He is a professor of economics at Frostburg State University, Senior Fellow at The Mises Institute and he’s been studying and writing about Austrian Economics since 1981. We discuss his latest article “AOC’s Green New Deal and The Great Leap Forward”. He explains why centrally planned economies have never worked in the past and why they still won’t work today. You can find a complete timeline, links and shownotes from this episode go to: https://chronicallyhuman.co/2019/02/27/why-the-new-green-deal-wont-work-dr-william-anderson-chp-ep-17/ Dr. Anderson explains how The New Green Deal is based upon the same ideology of The Great Leap Forward in China, The Centrally Planned Economy of the Soviet Union, and the U.S. Invasion of Iraq in 2003. All of these government actions are based upon the idea of collectivism, which is a political philsophy that believes individuals, whether in the U.S. or other countries, have no inherent natural rights. We discuss how those who are advocating for this plan to fundamentally change our entire economy, leave out the specifics of how it will be paid for, how the private property seized will be distributed and what will happen to those who disagree with their all encompassing utopian plans. You can read Dr. Andrerson's article here: https://mises.org/wire/aoc-and-green-great-leap-forward You can read for yourself The New Green Deal Proposal. https://assets.documentcloud.org/documents/5729035/Green-New-Deal-FAQ.pdf More information about The New Green Deal. https://mises.org/wire/mmt-even-more-dubious-aocs-green-new-deal The Great Leap Forward was an economic and social program that the Chinese Communist Government implemented from 1958 to 1962. Dr. Leah Houston is our guest today. She is currently an Emergency Room doctor and co-founder of a company that's applying blockchain technology to help fix healthcare. She is co-founder of HPEC.io which is a tech company that helps doctors to create self-sovereign identies on the blockchain. This helps to reduce costs, prevent fraud and put the control of a doctor's identity back into their hand's. We discuss why centralization of healthcare is a threat to everyone's privacy and pockebook and how decetnralization can put the power back into the hands of the people. Dr. Houston and I discuss the history of Bitcoin, what is the blockchain, what are self-sovereign identities and how these technologies can cut healthcare costs, increase access and improve outcomes. We also talk about the problem with third party payers and how along with burdensome regulations are causing doctors to burn out, quit their practices or even commit suicide. Dr. Houston also relates why their is a doctor shortage and what can be done to fix it. She belives that decentralization is one of the keys to fixing the healthcare sytem and helping to empower the individual to choose for themeslves how they improve their health and wellbeing. You can find out more about her private pracrice and HPEC.io below: http://leahhoustonmd.com https://hpec.io We also discussed the fact that the Practicing Physicians of America are suing over what they say is unfair practicies against the American Board of Internal Medicne which is restricting their right to practice medicine. Consider giving to help doctors fight back against unnecessary and expensive regulations that end up incresing costs and not improving outcomes. Practicing Physicians of America GoFundMe page - https://www.gofundme.com/practicing-physicians-of-america .I'm grateful for Dr. Leah Houston for her time today and her work using blockchain technology to help decentralize healthcare and her work to promote more freedom and less top down regulation from both public and private entites who control many of our healthcare choices. On The Chronically Human Podcast we advocate for Medical Freedom. That is simply your individual inherent right and the inherent responsibilty to choose for yourself how you improve your health and wellbeing. Thanks for listening. Dr. Mary Ruwart joins me to talk about self-ownership, medical freedom and the seemingly radical idea of the Separation of Church and State. You can follow her work at: http://www.ruwart.com Dr. Ruwart is a very warm, compassionate and intelligent person who truly believes, as I do, that the principles of individual liberty are the best ideas to organize a society upon. We discuss her most recent book "Death By Regulation." http://www.ruwart.com/product/death-regulation Dr. Ruwart makes the compelling case that the increased FDA regulatory authority granted by the 1962 Drug Amendment Act has led to a stifling of innovation, the massive increase in drug costs and the death of nearly 15,000,000 Americans. http://www.ruwart.com/blog/a-1962-law-slowed-drug-development-changing-it-could-slash-drug-prices.html I've bashed big pharma many times in the past and our conversation made me reconsider redirecting the blame more toward the FDA and those laws that give it the authority which has created the modern drug industry. We also discuss the concept of self-ownerships. This is the concept that you own yourself and that when the government tells you what you can and can't do they are violating this basic individual right. Her take is that libertarianism or the repeat for individual rights is the compassionate way to organize society. Dr. Ruwart was an early follower of Ayn Rand but felt there was something missing from her interpretation of individualism. She believes that humans have an innate need for other humans and that this is on the genetic level. And that charity and compassion are comparable with livery and help the person whose doing the helping more than those being helped. Love thy neighbor is still valid today as it was 2000 years ago. Dr. Ruwart also has a fascinating take on how government regulations are in fact a form of non-voluntary human experimentation that violates the ethical framework meant to protect people from being experimented upon without their consent. She is on the board of Institutional Review Board that is tasked with helping to insure that informed consent and certain guidelines are followed for human testing. http://www.ruwart.com/blog/an-ethicist-asks-is-regulation-unethical-human-experimentation.html During our conversation we also talk about the idea of The Separation of Medicine and State just as there is the Separation of Church and State. We discusses how both are based upon the same principle as self-ownership. The topic of the opioid crisis came up as well. Dr. Ruwart shared her personal story of how she had to watch her sister with cancer needlessly suffering due to issues with the red tape around pain medicine. She also related how her sister became so ill and was in so much pain they decided together to go to Dr. Kervokian to end her life. A very powerful story and highlights how we need to change the laws to allow individual to exercise their inherent right of self determination and have painless, effective means of ending one's own life. We had a great conversation about how we would all benefit from getting government out of your healthcare choices, the compassionate ethical side of libertarianism and how it's a matter of life and death when it comes to your medical freedom. Thanks for tuning in. Let us know what you think about Medical Freedom. Brad Miller The Chronically Human Podcast Sent from ProtonMail Mobile

Ed Coughlan journalist and editor of the National Pain Report joins us today. He covers the story about how the response to the opioid crisis is hurting many chronic pain patients. During our conversation we cover the political as well as the personal side of pain in America. Millions of people in the United States have chronic pain and many find relief by taking opioids, which used to be called pain medicine. Since the start of the "opioid crisis", which I contend is in reality an overdose crisis in the addiction community, people in pain are being forced to reduce or even completly stopped from taking their pain medication. We discuss what this type of preventable suffering does to individauls, families and to society at large. This is a very personal issue for me. I’ve been in chronic pain for over thirty years and I’ve definitely been affected by the current opioidphobia that’s gripped the nation. So I’m very grateful for Ed’s work and his perspective on this issue. Ed does an amazing job over at the National Pain Report covering the news concerning pain, practical ideas that can help those in pain and giving a platform for people in pain to share their stories. We discuss the state of the pain community advocacy efforts and what can be done to help change the draconian and in some places, like Oregon, absolutely barbaric policies surrounding the treatment of pain. During out talk we also touched on how the true enemies of those in pain aren’t people with addiction, doctors or people who advocate for alternative therapies but those who are lobbying the government to make it extremely difficult or in many cases impossible to get effective opioids to treat their pain. Personally I advocate for the total separation of Medicine and State and I believe that individuals have the right to consume what they choose. But as Ed said during our conversation the world has changed since the current opioid crisis started and that’s the reality we have to deal with. The question is now how can we gain back some of our freedom lost during the last few years, and once again to choose, along with our doctor, how best to ease our pain. We also talk about how undertreated pain can lead some to contemplate suicide or actually take their own life. If you are struggling with suicidal thoughts please reach out to friends and family or contact https://samaritanshope.org and you can also call or text them at 1-877-870-4673. If you are in pain or know someone who is or you want to educate your friends and family about what the issues are surrounding politics, pain and solutions to help those who are suffering, please check out and share our conversation. After listening to the conversation head over to http://nationalpainreport.com and check out the great work Ed is doing. You can also follow him on twitter @NatPainReport Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/NationalPainReport/ I also mentioned that I have found success using Kratom to transition off of opioids and to manage my mild to moderate pain. Kat Murit joins us today. She is libertarian feminist, helps to save animals from unnecessary government medical experiements and works with students around the world to End The War On Drugs.
