Trump's Law-Bending Attack on Migrants

What A Day

In both court and in interviews Monday, the Trump administration doubled down on its decision over the weekend to deport more than 250 migrants, mostly Venezuelans. About half of them were removed under the Alien Enemies Act, a centuries-old war-time law President Donald Trump has invoked to deport suspected members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua with little to no due process. It's just one of a handful of really scary anti-immigration efforts the White House has undertaken recently, including the push to deport Columbia University grad student Mahmoud Kahlil over his involvement in campus protests against the war in Gaza. Nico Perrino, executive vice president of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, talks about how Kahlil's case sits at the intersection of the Trump administration's crackdown on immigration and free speech. And in headlines: Trump signed an executive order to dismantle the agency that runs Voice of America, the White House said it has expelled South Africa's ambassador to the U.S., and Harvard University announced plans to make attending the school more financially realistic for middle- and low-income families.Correction: During our interview with journalist Josh Barro on Monday's show, we said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is 80 years old. This week's episode is full of hidden surprises and wonders as we talk about the new Mario game, Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a 2023 platform game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It is the first traditional side-scrolling Super Mario game since New Super Mario Bros. U in 2012. The player controls Mario and friends as they attempt to stop Bowser, who plots to take over a new land known as the Flower Kingdom after using the magical Wonder Flower to fuse himself with the kingdom's castle. Correction: During the discussion, Nicky and Eric talk about the secret stage, 'The Final-Final Test Badge Marathon'. Eric is under the impression that he has played the stage when he had not yet. AG's report documents past child sexual abuse in Balt. Archdiocese

Midday

Our focus on Midday today is the Attorney General's Report on Child Sexual Abuse in the Archdiocese of Baltimore.A warning to our listeners: for the rest of the hour, we're going to talk about child sexual abuse.Yesterday, Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown released the long-awaited Catholic clergy sexual abuse report. It chronicles more than 80 years of abuse by more than 150 Catholic clergy members, seminarians, deacons and Archdiocese employees, and their victimization of more than 600 children and young people. The Catholic Church is by no means the only religious faith institution which has had clergy break trust and act criminally with their congregants, nor are religious institutions the only professions in which abusers prey on children. But the Catholic Church is the sole focus of this particular report. Here's part of what AG Brown had to say yesterday when he announced the report's release: “Today, certainly in Maryland, is a day of reckoning and a day of accounting…“The incontrovertible history uncovered by this investigation is one of pervasive, pernicious and persistent abuse by priests and other Archdiocese personnel. It's also a history of repeated cover-up of that abuse by the Catholic Church hierarchy…” "What was consistent throughout the stories was the absolute authority and power these abusive priests and the church leadership held over survivors, their families and their communities. The report seeks to document this long and sordid history..." "While it may be too late for the survivors to see criminal justice served, we hope that exposing the archdiocese's transgressions to the fullest extent possible will bring some measure of accountability and perhaps encourage others to come forward." — Md Attorney General Anthony Brown, speaking Wednesday in Annapolis. The report was written by Elizabeth Embry, who worked on it for four years. Ms. Embry is now a member of the House of Delegates. She will be joining Tom to talk about the report and its findings here on Midday next week, after the General Assembly Session has concluded. The abuse described in the report goes back to the 1940s. Archbishop William Lori, in a letter to Catholics published yesterday offered an apology, acknowledged the, quote, “reprehensible time in the history of this Archdiocese,” and asserted that since the 1990s, the church has been more transparent and cooperative with law enforcement to remove abusers from its ranks. We invited Archbishop Lori to join our conversation. He declined our invitation. Today is a holy day in the church calendar, Maundy Thursday, and the Archbishop's spokesperson cited a schedule conflict.Today, we'll hear from some of the survivors of the abuse that is described in the report, from reporters who have been covering this story, and from a Doctor who treats child sexual abusers. Joining Tom in Studio A to discuss the AG's report are Scott Maucione, WYPR's health reporter, and Emily Hofstaedter, a WYPR general assignment reporter. We also hear a recorded comment from Dylan Segelbaum, a reporter with WYPR's news partner, The Baltimore Banner. Later in the program, Tom is joined by Dr. Elizabeth Letourneau. She's the director of the Moore Center for the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. If you are a victim of abuse, and you are ready to come forward you can report past abuse by members of the clergy or anyone else by calling the Attorney General's Office at 410-576-6312 or emailing report@oag.state.md.us. Michael Waitze and Daniel McFarlane visited FHI 360's regional Bangkok office to talk with Josh Woodard, who is the organization's Regional ICT & Digital Finance Advisor. In an insightful discussion covering many issues, Josh highlights the role of technology in creating resilient communities and the value of thoughtful planning. Josh's first experience with Thailand came as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Northeast of Thailand. He explains how it gave him “a sense of the world of international development” and insight into how technology can transform people's lives. His experience in the Northeast led to a career focus on digital development which he explains as “using digital technology in ways that are appropriate and can effectively help us to achieve development objectives.” In recent years, Josh has led a grant focused on Technologies for Resilience in Asia-Pacific funded by the Rockefeller Foundation. Resilience, according to Josh, is a framing of development that focuses on the “capacity of individual, communities, and systems to survive, adapt and grow in the face of stress and shocks and even transform when conditions require it.” Technology for resilience, he explains, is about how we can utilize technology to “make individuals, communities, countries, and the whole world stronger.” In deploying technologies for resilience, Josh stresses the importance of alignment with the needs of actual users and their capacity. He also emphasizes how organizations need to ensure resilience is designed into the technologies they develop and deploy. Josh asks, “if the technology that we are using to try and help people to be more resilient is not resilient in itself, not sustainable, then how can it help with long-term resilience?” Josh encourages organizations that are developing technological solutions to anticipate the future, especially regarding how the technology will be sustained into the future. To support organizations that develop and deploy impactful yet sustainable technologies, Josh developed a Digital Technology for Resilience Planning and Due Diligence Tool, which is an Excel-based tool that helps organizations plan the development of technology and provides a framework for identifying potential development partners. The conversation concludes with Josh giving his personal perspective on the need for more thoughtfulness in the commercial tech world. “There are unintended consequences we are already aware of that are still not being addressed.” Then, there are a lot of things that “we can realistically anticipate that it's gonna be an issue”, which require a lot more consideration and dialogue between the tech sector and the public. Technology developed for the good of people can often be used for evil and harm, intentionally and unintentionally. So, rather than dealing with the consequences after the fact, he hopes that it becomes the responsibility of tech developers to anticipate the harmful uses of their technology. While we can not protect against everything, “we need to at least be vigilant” and anticipate what can happen. Correction: During the podcast, the Pulse Lab's Haze Gazer innovation is discussed. It was described as a response to forest fires when in fact it primarily deals with peatland fires.

CORRECTION: During the recording of this podcast a story referencing the historical Bloody Massacre in Stockholm incorrectly named the King of Belgium as the orchestrator of this bloodshed when it was, in fact, The King of Denmark. Our apologies to the people of Belgium. The podcast will be amended on 12 July 2019. Most people have a hard time responding to verbal attacks or written jibes in emails, texts and other communication because it puts them in react mode instead of respond mode. There are 5 types of conflict resolution strategies according to Thomas Kilmann model. Find out if your default conflict resolution communication strategy is reflective of a fox, shark, teddy bear, turtle or owl. The BIFF response method will help you respond to hostile emails and other communications and make you feel good doing it. BIFF stands for Brief, Informative, Friendly and Firm and can be used by anyone, in any situation but it does take practice. The most important thing to remember is: it is not about you. 6 steps to conflict resolution: Identify the source of the conflict… what is the disagreement about. Look beyond the incident…establish a common goal. Discuss ways to meet the goal and request solutions. Identify solutions both people can support as the best way forward. Decide on an agreement. Acknowledge the agreed upon solution and determine the responsibilities each party has in the resolution. The high conflict institute encourages us to incorporate their framework for effective conflict resolution, they call it an EAR Statement. An EAR Statement is a statement containing Empathy, Attention and Respect. EAR is especially helpful when you are dealing with someone who is really upset e.g. angry, sad, frightened or feeling overwhelmed. An EAR Statement helps you connect with emotionally charged people and allows them to shift into problem solving mode. Here is an example of an EAR Statement E.g. “I can see how frustrated you are by this situation, Chris and I want help. Let’s talk about it so I can really understand what’s happening. I have a lot of respect for the efforts you have made to deal with this problem.”

My guest this week is Joshua Pollock, co-author of The Heartfulness Way: Heart-Based Meditations For Spiritual Transformation. He recently spend a day in Boise speaking at a corporate event, doing interviews, and giving a public lecture. All in an effort to share The Heartfulness Way. The following will give you a little background on Joshua before you listen to the interview. Joshua was raised in Maine. As a child, he recalls spending a lot of time reading books from his parent's enormous book collection. Later in life he said he did some degree of spiritual seeking, but wasn't specifically looking for a meditation practice when he had a chance encounter with someone on the street that would ultimately lead him to The Heartfulness Way and eventually to meeting his current teacher and co-author Kamlesh D. Patel, also known as Daaji. Kamlesh later asked Joshua to write a book on meditation, and then agreed to co-author the book with him. In addition to being a Heartfulness Way trainer and practitioner, Joshua is also an accomplished classical violinist. He holds a bachelor of musical arts from Indiana University and two masters degrees from Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, UK. He currently resides in India with his wife and their two children. Joshua and I after the interview. I'm happy because I've just heard about The Heartfulness Way ;) Below are excerpts from a lecture Joshua gave while in Boise: “This is a very simple practice. It’s so simple that when I first started I thought, well, how can this even do anything?” ~ Joshua speaking about his first impression of The Heartfulness Way “Heartfulness has roots in Raja Yoga [and is about creating a union between] the lowest aspect of yourself [and the] highest aspect of yourself.” “Heartfulness is about centering yourself in your heart.” “Meditation isn’t a skill. Really it’s just a process and the benefits you get are the result of performing this process.” In this episode, you’ll discover: What the Heartfulness Way isHow this practice can help you enhance your day to day experience in business and in life. How Joshua discovered The Heartfulness WayWhere you can learn more about this meditation Resources Mentioned: The Peace Room - If you're in the Boise area and looking for a knowledgeable, intuitive, and caring Reiki Master and Certified Crystal Healer, get in touch with Jenny StinsonHeartfulness.org - This is the website Joshua mentioned in the interviewHeartsApp by Heartfulness - Available for both Android and iOSThe Heartfulness Way: Heart-Based Meditations For Spiritual Transformation, by Kamlesh D. Michael Waitze and Daniel McFarlane visit FHI 360’s regional Bangkok office to talk with Josh Woodard, who is the organisation’s Regional ICT & Digital Finance Advisor. In an insightful discussion covering many issues, Josh highlights the role of technology in creating resilient communities and the value of thoughtful planning. Josh’s first experience with Thailand came as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Northeast of Thailand. He explains how it gave him “a sense of the world of international development” and insight into how technology can transform people’s lives. Resilience, according to Josh, is a framing of development that focuses on the “capacity of individual, communities and systems to survive, adapt and grow in the face of stress and shocks and even transform when conditions require it.” Technology for resilience, he explains, is about how we can utilize technology to “make individuals, communities, countries and the whole world stronger.” In deploying technologies for resilience, Josh stresses the importance of alignment with the needs of actual users and their capacity. He also emphasizes how organisations need to ensure resilience is designed into the technologies they develop and deploy. Josh asks, “If the technology that we are using to try and help people to be more resilient is not resilient in itself, not sustainable, then how can it help with long term resilience?” Josh encourages organisations who are developing technological solutions to anticipate the future, especially regarding how the technology will be sustained into the future. To support organisations develop and deploy impactful yet sustainable technologies, Josh developed a Digital Technology for Resilience Planning and Due Diligence Tool, which is an Excel-based tool that helps organisations plan the development of technology and provides a framework for identifying potential development partners. The conversation concludes with Josh giving his personal perspective on the need for more thoughtfulness in the commercial tech world. “There are unintended consequences we are already aware of that are still not being addressed.” Then, there are a lot of things that “we can realistically anticipate that it's gonna be an issue”, which require a lot more consideration and dialogue about between the tech sector and the public. Correction: During the podcast, the Pulse Lab’s Haze Gazer innovation is discussed. It was described as a response to forest fires when in fact it primarily deals with peatland fires.

"Whilst going on shore, we pulled alongside a canoe with 6 Fuegians. I never saw more miserable creatures; stunted in their growth, their hideous faces bedaubed with white paint & quite naked.— One full aged woman absolutely so, the rain & spray were dripping from her body; their red skins filthy & greasy, their hair entangled, their voices discordant, their gesticulation violent & without any dignity. Viewing such men, one can hardly make oneself believe that they are fellow creatures placed in the same world. [Beagle Diary, February 25, 1834]In this episode we are joined by our esteemed colleague Dr. Jeremy Paden to discuss Darwin, Fitzroy, and other early explorers views of the native peoples of Tierra del Fuego.  As we outlined in episode 1 of this season, Fitzroy had kidnapped four native Tierra del Fuegians with the hopes of converting them to Christianity and ultimately returning them back to their native lands to nucleate the conversion of the "savages" to a live a civilized agrarian life of tubers, legumes, and bible verses.Unfortunately, Boat Memory, one of the natives that Fitzroy had gang pressed into missionary service died from small pox in England but the other three - "Fuegia Basket", "Jemmy Button", and "York Minister" survived their journey to England,  their education therein, and their ultimate return to tip of South America to rejoin their family and friends.Sketches by Fitzroy of his kidnapped victims. Image from Darwin Online. On January 23rd, 1833 the HMS Beagle stopped by Wollya bay (later spelled Woolliah and then Wulaia] to build a outpost for Jemmy, Fuegia and York. Fitzroy and his crew, along with the help of Mr. Matthews, a missionary Englishman, planted crops, built a cabin, and transferred the useless accouterments of "civilization".In Keith Thomson’s book HMS Beagle: The story of Darwin’s Ship he vividly describes the scene and foreshadows the failure of the settlement:“Over the next week the party from the Beagle built a small outpost and finally unloaded all the incredible paraphernalia that had been sent from England by well-wishers, all the Victorian knickknackery that seemed so splendid in London but appeared ridiculously out of place at this remotest end of the world. A seemingly unending pile of soup tureens, chamber pots, wineglasses, and beaver hats was transferred from the boats, while more practical souls set about planting potatoes, beans, root vegetables, lettuce, and cabbage in the gardens”. [pg. 172][Correction] During our retelling the story of the return of the three Fuegians we mixed up the time scale of events. We stated that Mr. Matthwes survived a year at the outpost before he was picked up by Fitzroy but in actuality he only lasted about 2 weeks before he abandoned the missionary effort and left the HMS Beagle to join his brother in New Zealand. At then end of the podcast we enjoyed a lively discussion on how negatively did Darwin view the natives of Tierra del Fuego? The opening and closing theme to Discovering Darwin is "May" by Jared C.
