In this week's episode I'm delighted to be joined by Kevin Smith, Dr Con Burns and Dr Ed Coughlan. We discuss a new paper Kevin, Con, Ed, and a number of other authors have written entitled “How to coach: A review of theoretical approaches for the development of a novel coach education framework”. The article reviews literature relating to theoretical constructs of a novel coach education framework developed by the Irish Rugby Football Union. The three constructs included are: self-determination theory (SDT), explicit learning theories (ELT) and implicit learning theories (ILT). We take a deep dive into the paper and examine the roles of SDT, ELT and ILT in coaching and discuss how they can be combined to enhance coaching practice.

My old pal and returning guest Will Massey PhD, Sport Psychologist, educator, coach, and practicing martial artist. In this episode, Will offers his insight into how we can foster and cultivate independent and self-directed learning within a group setting. We cover, learned helplessness, implicit learning, practicing for performance vs practice for learning. Motivation theory and considerations. And finally Will gives some practical takeaways for coaches looking to support athletes becoming more independent and in control of their own development. Will is able to pair an academic and theoretical perspective with a practical understanding as both a student and coach of the sport. This valuable discussion given retention, motivation and participation involve creating a positive and engaging psychological training environment.
Today's guest brings both a practical and theoretical perspective to skill development in marital arts.Dr. Alan Dunton is a former Irish National TKD team competitor and now a researcher and lecturer at Cork institute of technology. Alan received his PhD in Skill Acquisition under the guidance of former guest, professor Ed Coughlan. (aka. Dr SkillAcq) .I really clicked with Alan and we went down several rabbit holes and discussed a whole lot of different aspects of training and skill development. Alan is advocate and proponent of a more ecological approach to skill development, but also sees utility and in more traditional approach and frameworks. This is part 2 of 2 - and we carry on from where we left in part 1. Exploring disguised and deceptive actions.Alan was extremely receptive and enthusiastic to collaborate when I reached out and i encourage all that enjoyed his insight to follow him or reach out to him on his twitter profile.
I'm so excited to speak with the very first Sport Psych Show guest, Dr Ed Coughlan this week. Ed is widely acknowledged as one of the top skills coaches working in elite sport today. Ed has worked with a wide range of competitors and coaches including from the EIS, GB Shooting, UEFA, Chelsea FC, St Helen's Rugby League and with a number of golfers on the European Tour. Ed has over 30 years coaching experience. We discuss how his coaching has changed over that time; being comfortable with not having all the answers for players; the ASPIRE model he and fellow researcher, Paul Ford developed and Ed shares his top tips for coaches of teams for session design with skill acquisition in mind.

In this episode I have done a Skill Acquisition Mash Up from 4 podcasts last year. These snippets are from Ed Coughlan, Damian Farrow, Ian Renshaw and Rich Masters and will hopefully get you thinking about the way you train or coach when it come to motor learning. If you want to go back and listen to the original episodes they are;Ed Coughlan Ep 51Damian Farrow Ep 59Ian Renshaw Ep 76Rich Masters Ep 65As always I would love to hear your feedback and if you could leave us a review wherever you listen to your podcasts that would be great.
My discussion with Professor Nicola Hodges was all about demonstrations! Dr Hodges researches and teaches out of the motor skill lab at the University of British Columbia. I reached out to Dr Nicola to ask for her to lend her expertise and insight into the science of demonstrations and learning in sport. Being such a big part of our sport and coaching, I was interested in how we might make the most of the demonstration time while increasing the effectiveness of them. Professor Nicola did not disappoint, other than reminding me I get a little overzealous about the ecological dynamics space that place less emphasis on direct instruction and demonstrations. Nevertheless it was a great reminder that there are still so many unknowns and that there are many roads to the destination. I fun chat with immediately implementable nuggets of advice. You can follow and connect with Dr Nicola via twitter @nicolajhodges and learn more at her website http://msl.kin.educ.ubc.ca/home
Tonight we are joined by another Irishman, Ed Coughlan who is a Skill Acquisition Specialist with a PhD in Skill Acquisition. I am a massive fan of the way Ed thinks about the world and in particular learning skill During this chat we talk about some of the conventional way in which skills are taught and Ed challenges some of that thinking and offers some great alternatives. I particularly love how he says Skill Acq is just "Common Sense" If you like the podcast please share it with your friends and it would be great if you could leave a rating on iTunes, Spotify or wherever you listen as we would love to grow our community.
PART 2 of my discussion with Coach, Educator and Professor of Skill Acquisition Dr. Ed Coughlan. Ed and I discuss the growing non-linear approach to skill acquisition in sport and how it can help us design more effective training and development environments for MMA. A two part episode here discusses the slow moving paradigm shift in sports coaching and skill development. Dr. Ed helps clear up some of my nagging confusion and ambivalence in my own coaching methods. Coach Ed has a ton of content as podcasts, publications and YouTube videos and I was honored for him to add a couple of more hours of it on this podcast. You can follow and connect with Dr Ed via twitter @DrSkillAcq

Chris Chapman is joined by Ed Coughlan (Sports Science lecturer, Cork Institute of Technology) and Stuart Lancaster (Senior Coach at Leinster Rugby, former Head Coach of England national rugby union team) as they discuss skill acquisition. Skill development is at the heart of what a coach does – players and athletes go to a coach expecting to improve the sport or activity they're involved in. So what is the key to that aspect of coaching? From coaching school children completely new to a sport, to working with elite professionals, improving technique and game understanding is always there – and the principles are always the same. Whatever your role, if you're helping people to be active and improve, we're here for you. Visit UKCoaching.org to grow your coaching skills and be part of the community

Today we have a great friend of the show back on the Brain Booster, Dr Ed Coughlan. Ed is one of the world’s leading authorities on Skill Acquisition. It is such an important question to ask yourself. Are you developing style or skill? Are your current actions making you a better golfer? When we get so involved in how our swing or our technique looks we can end up going down a deep rabbit hole of despair. There will always be something wrong with our swing based on how it looks. Yet when we start to focus on skills then we have a different outlook. What skills do you need to develop to create the shots you require? What environment do you need to create? What are the sort of people you need to spend time with? Are you truly asking yourself the right questions about what you do with your training? Are you falling into the comfort trap of the familiar? Are you prepared to face some discomfort to get better? In our time together Ed shares some wonderful insights from his vast experience in the field of Skill Acquisition. He shares with us the sports he feels currently create the best training environments. You WILL be surprised. We talk about the limitations and the misconceptions of standing on a range beating balls. We look at how our mind body system can actually develop SKILL How we need to look at the QUESTIONS the game asks us and then replicate those questions in our training. How you need to get better at REFLECTION Unless you put into place a process of reflection you are doomed to keep repeating the same mistakes How if you truly think differently you open up endless future possibilities Ed was kind enough to become a guest contributor on our new book ‘The Lost Art of Playing Golf’ and we dive deeply into some of his most important concepts To find out more about Ed and his wonderful work find him on Twitter at @DrSkillAcq To get a copy of the new book ‘The Lost Art of Playing Golf’ go to https://www.thelostartofgolf.com or on Amazon https://tinyurl.com/y57m5g2c

Ed Coughlan journalist and editor of the National Pain Report joins us today. He covers the story about how the response to the opioid crisis is hurting many chronic pain patients. During our conversation we cover the political as well as the personal side of pain in America. Millions of people in the United States have chronic pain and many find relief by taking opioids, which used to be called pain medicine. Since the start of the "opioid crisis", which I contend is in reality an overdose crisis in the addiction community, people in pain are being forced to reduce or even completly stopped from taking their pain medication. We discuss what this type of preventable suffering does to individauls, families and to society at large. This is a very personal issue for me. I’ve been in chronic pain for over thirty years and I’ve definitely been affected by the current opioidphobia that’s gripped the nation. So I’m very grateful for Ed’s work and his perspective on this issue. Ed does an amazing job over at the National Pain Report covering the news concerning pain, practical ideas that can help those in pain and giving a platform for people in pain to share their stories. We discuss the state of the pain community advocacy efforts and what can be done to help change the draconian and in some places, like Oregon, absolutely barbaric policies surrounding the treatment of pain. During out talk we also touched on how the true enemies of those in pain aren’t people with addiction, doctors or people who advocate for alternative therapies but those who are lobbying the government to make it extremely difficult or in many cases impossible to get effective opioids to treat their pain. Personally I advocate for the total separation of Medicine and State and I believe that individuals have the right to consume what they choose. But as Ed said during our conversation the world has changed since the current opioid crisis started and that’s the reality we have to deal with. The question is now how can we gain back some of our freedom lost during the last few years, and once again to choose, along with our doctor, how best to ease our pain. We also talk about how undertreated pain can lead some to contemplate suicide or actually take their own life. If you are struggling with suicidal thoughts please reach out to friends and family or contact https://samaritanshope.org and you can also call or text them at 1-877-870-4673. If you are in pain or know someone who is or you want to educate your friends and family about what the issues are surrounding politics, pain and solutions to help those who are suffering, please check out and share our conversation. After listening to the conversation head over to http://nationalpainreport.com and check out the great work Ed is doing. You can also follow him on twitter @NatPainReport Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/NationalPainReport/ I also mentioned that I have found success using Kratom to transition off of opioids and to manage my mild to moderate pain. This week's podcast is the final one of 2018...hasn't the year flown by!! For this episode I asked some of the guests I have had on the show over the year to drop by for a little Christmas sin dig so that they could share their reflections and learnings from the year. He is both fascinating and engaging We had a wonderful discussion devoid of any ego just sharing information to help players improve. Ed’s route to Skill Acquisition started over 20 years ago as a coach and accelerated during his degree in Sport Science at Dublin City University (DCU) and his PhD in Skill Acquisition at the Research Institute for Sport & Exercise Science at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). He has studied under some of the world’s leading Skill Acquisition specialists; Dr Rick Shuttleworth, Dr Paul Ford and Prof. Mark Williams. In the session we discuss how liberating it is to realise that so many skills CAN be learned if you put yourself in the right environment and your training is geared to transferability. We explore that fundamental question ‘does your practice transfer into the REAL world?’ We talk about developing the skill of resilience The ability to DEAL with whatever the game throws at you We talk about the limitations of trying to work on pieces of your technique from a bio mechanical perspective Creating rich learning environments Accumulating ‘good days’.. Ed has a very similar philosophy about maximising each and every day to move your game forwards How you CAN teach and old dog new tricks What the research says about learning skills as you get older IF the practice and the environment is set up correctly I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Ed and I recommend you sit back listen and enjoy the words of a true expert Ed can be contacted at Dredwardcoughlan.com Do YOU want to become a Mind Factor coach? I got together with friends of the show Ed Coughlan and Shawn Myszka to reflect on the recent movement and skill acquisition conferences that they ran on either side of the Atlantic. As you would expect, it was a great conversation that meandered all over the place as they guys tried to make sense of the various things that they took away from the events. I just sat back and enjoyed the ride...I hope you do too!!
