Today I finally get to nerd out on SALT with Darryl Bosshardt of Redmond's Real Salt since I use their salt in and on my foods daily plus trying to brine olives (first timers) in their real salt! What is your interest in SALT!? "I love talking about salt because it is one thing that it so often overlooked and misunderstood, yet is one of the key elements for life. In terms of importance, salt is right at the top of the list behind oxygen and water - but is so often mistakenly demonized by those that just don't understand its essential role. And when it comes to any diet, keto, fasting, clean eating, cleansing, fermenting foods, etc - salt plays such an important factor." Some of our Real Salt Questions: • Is salt really bad for me? Should I try to eliminate sodium from my diet? • I have heard that "sea salt" is better for me, is that true? • What are differences in "sea salt" and other salts like the “pink”, “red” and “back” salts? • What should I look for and what questions should I ask when trying to find a Natural Salt? • What about "salt substitutes"? • I know iodine is good for us, even essential, but what about Iodized Salt? Is Iodized salt a good source of Iodine? • How is salt generally produced? How is Real Salt produced? • How did "Real Salt" get started? • If the right kind of salt is really good for me, how much should I try to get per day? • Are there other products like “Real Salt” that Redmond has? • What are some great salt resource books for those that would like to read a little about natural salts?

Today on Salty Hunter Podcast I sit down with Darryl Bosshardt from Redmond Real Salt. I was turned on to Redmond Real Salt about a year ago, and after using their products I will never go back to normal table salt. This episode takes a deep dive into the history, geology, archaeology, and nerdiness of how Redmond gets their salt onto your table. I had no idea what this episode would entail, but Darryl's passion and knowledge of his local area and where the salt comes from is fascinating. Darryl explains how the salt gets from the earth and into the shaker bottles you see on your table. We talk about how his salt made its way into the ultramarathon world, and how that lead into his electrolyte supplement company. Show Summary: “We need sodium to help us adequately maintain our blood pressure. We need it to support our brain, our adrenals, and our digestion.”We need salt in our bodies. Studies from the American Journal of Medicine show that low salt intake causes more cardiovascular disease risk factors than extremely high intake. The adrenal, which produces cortisol, needs sodium to help our bodies adapt to stress. But we should know which type of salt to consume and not. Like other processed foods, salt can also be manufactured. Sadly, other manufacturers pull out the nutrients from it to make the cost cheaper, which you have to get rid of to avoid certain diseases. In this episode with Darryl Bosshardt, one of the founders of the Redmond Red Salt, you'll discover what natural whole salt is and its difference from the one you see in the market. In addition, you'll find out how the human body reacts to a salt substitute.Exceptional Highlight:Throw out the idea of looking for sea salt, and start looking for natural whole salt.Every single cell in the body requires sodium.Salt is a very inexpensive preservative, and it's even cheaper if it's manufactured because they've already pulled out the nutrients. So if you're eating processed foods, you're getting high amounts of processed salt, which is a bad combination..Show Highlights: Is salt really bad for us, and should we eliminate it from our diet?Darryl 5:00Salt's job in the body is to regulate intracellular and extracellular fluids. So when those fluids are out of balance, it does cause, or it can cause problems. So these doctors did a study on rats and fed them copious amounts of sodium, and sure enough, they had some problems. And that'd be true for everything.Does lack of salt affect your food digestion?Juanique 9:42If you're decreasing your salt intake, you don't have enough sustenance to create hydrochloric acid in the stomach to break down your food. Therefore, you're not absorbing your food and would have malabsorption. Consequently, you start to get sick. So we need this salt to get the chloride to pump it into our stomach to break down our food. What should we know about the world of iodized salt?Darryl 20:27Most people, especially women, are iodine deficient for several reasons, whether that's halogen toxicity, diet, or many different factors involved. Most people should be going out of their way to seek good sources of iodine, be that food or a good clean iodine supplement. But salt is not the way to get iodine.Important LinksRedmond Red SaltReal SaltThe Salt FixSalt Your Way to HealthIodine : Why You Need It, Why You Can't Live Without ItSalt: A World HistorySupport the show (https://www.mygutsyhealth.com/gutsy-family)

Redmond Real Salt is the “real” deal when it comes to salt. At Harmons, when creating our made-fresh-in-store items it’s the only salt we use. And there is a very good reason for that. It’s natural, clean salt, which tastes very different than iodized salt. And not only is the taste better; so are the health benefits. So, where does Redmond Real Salt come from? Darryl Bosshardt, grandson of one of the original founders, joins our hosts Chef Lesli Sommerdorf and Brandon Young to share the backstory behind the successful business. You’ll want to listen to this informative podcast to find out just where that salt comes from. (Hint: it’s not the Great Salt Lake.) For more information please visit https://www.harmonsgrocery.com Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HarmonsGroceryStores/ Follow us on Instagram: https://instagram.com/harmonsgrocery?igshid=6ir2kf3qy3jy For our podcast blog directory: https://www.harmonsgrocery.com/podcast-archive/ Redmond Real Salt: https://redmond.life/realsalt/ The Sundance Sea Salt is a natural topic in the state of Utah, considering we still have a large body of salty water, the Great Salt Lake, which is visible from the Harmons offices. But that’s not where Redmond gets their salt from. About two hours to the south of the Great Salt Lake there is an ancient seabed, a remnant of the Sundance Sea, an inland sea that existed in North America during the mid-to-late Jurassic Period of the Mesozoic Era (think dinosaurs). Fast forward to 1958, when a prolonged drought forced the Bosshardt brothers to abandon their farming lifestyle in central Utah. Aware that Native Americans had once harvested salt rock from their farmland, Milo and Lamar Bosshardt borrowed a little money and went into the salt business with little more than sledgehammers, picks, and a determination to provide for their families. Their salt deposit provided a naturally balanced mineral salt that local ranchers credited for healthier herds. As the salt’s reputation grew, the Bosshardt brothers purchased land from their neighbors, giving them access to the entire deposit, estimated to extend several thousand feet below the surface of the earth. Natural Clean Salt Today, the family continues to mine the salt and Darryl is proud of their legacy, one that started with his grandfather and great uncle. While many salts contain anti-caking agents and even dextrose, and others have been heat-processed and stripped of their natural trace minerals, Redmond Real Salt is unrefined and full of natural minerals and flavor. Not only is the taste different, but so is are the benefits to your health, as everyone needs salt to survive. Just not the high sodium, processed, chemical-tasting salt many people are used to. The mine where they work is underground and large but does not really resemble other dangerous types of mines that quickly come to the mind. You’ll want to visit their website to see the very cool pictures of just exactly what the mine looks like and tune into the podcast to hear Darryl go in-depth into the fascinating world of salt mining. You Can Taste the Difference As we mentioned before, Harmons exclusively uses Redmond Real Salt, including in our artisan bread and Kitchen items. We believe you can taste the difference. Along with their culinary salt, they also provide products for salting roads and agricultural purposes. They also have a body care line, including toothpaste, and you can even buy some clothing featuring their amazing products. Make sure you listen to the podcast to get the skinny on Redmond Real Salt’s unique product and learn all the ways you can enhance your food and elevate your cooking.
