David's deceptive activity among the Philistines created a dilemma when he was recruited to join the army assembled against Israel. Yet, God did not abandon him to his sin. David's unforeseen deliverance by way of the Philistine commanders reveals the depths of God's mercy. While David had been saved many times before, he ultimately needed to be saved from himself and so do we.

As the Philistines gathered in their forces, we find King Saul alone and desperate. Fearing for his life, he inquired of the Lord, but after years of ignoring God's word, Saul received no answer. He then disguises himself and consults a medium only to hear from an apparition of Samuel about his impending death. Saul's hopeless situation reflects our natural condition apart from Christ. If we hear God's voice today, we must not harden our hearts but turn to the Lord for rescue.

Proverbs 10:24, "What the wicked dreads will overtake him; what the righteous desire will be granted." The wisdom of God in the book of Proverbs pierces through all human delusions and presents us with eternal realities. This brief verse sets before us a sharp contrast between the fate of the wicked, and the hope of the righteous. It reveals two solemn truths: that the inner fears of the ungodly shall be fulfilled, while the holy desires of the godly shall be satisfied. "What the wicked dreads will overtake him." The wicked may suppress the thought of judgment--but deep within, he dreads it. He fears death, he fears the exposure of his sins, and he fears divine retribution--though he may not admit it openly. His conscience, however dulled, is not silent. The fear of Hell is often buried beneath worldly distraction, yet it remains like a smoldering fire within. This text assures us that what every wicked man dreads, will eventually come upon him. The judgment he fears, shall arrive with certainty. The wrath of God, which he hoped was fiction--will confront him as fact. This is not mere poetic justice--it is divine justice. God's holiness demands it. His warnings are not idle threats, and His justice will not sleep forever. The lost sinner's worst nightmare shall become his eternal reality--unless he repents. "What the righteous desire will be granted." But in glorious contrast, the righteous--those who have been made righteous by faith in Jesus--shall have his holy desires fully granted. (2) Easter Sunday: They idea that the anniversary of the resurrection of Jesus lands on a Sunday each year is a myth. The name of "Easter" is a sad reality of history and our English Language. But we emphasize the facts of the actual anniversary of the Crucifixion on Nisan 14 (which was April 12th this year) and the anniversary of the bodily resurrection of Jesus after three days and three nights on Nisan 18 (which was April 16th this year). Jesus rose from the dead nearly 1,995 to 2,000 years ago on a Sunday. But Nisan 18 does not land on a Sunday every year. The resurrection of Jesus is historical FACT! And all of this religious fiction and false teachings and false practices delute the truth from the sight and hears of believers and non-believers alike. Still on the run, David and his small company were protected as they hid among Saul's enemies and moved as the Lord directed. God alone kept David safe from harm—a protection that is also ours when we run to Jesus for spiritual refuge.

This chapter brings two questions to the forefront. The first, "Is it permissible to lie when telling the truth could lead to tragedy?" David lied to Ahimelech and asked for sustenance. The priest then helped the fugitive by giving him holy bread. The second question, "How should we respond when God's providence seems to contradict His promises?" Afraid for his life, David ran from King Saul into Philistine territory, where he was recognized by the king of Gath's servants. In a deliberate act of deceit, David feigned insanity. His escape rested not in his own ingenuity but in the Lord's deliverance—the same deliverance that is available to all who flee to God for refuge.

This is so basic that I almost sound like I'm joking when I say "Jesus is. The Word exists." But I'm not joking — and it's important. After all, we have all had bad experiences with things that don't exist. I don't even need to stray into joke territory by speaking of things like "the full faith and credit of the United States government." I can speak of jackalopes; of aliens; of unicorns; of monsters in the closet, of Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. These things are notoriously non-existent. Everyone knows that they are not real. And, I regret to inform you, for a significant segment of American society, Jesus Christ is in the same league with rainbows and unicorns. People believe in Him, at most, the way they believe in Tony Soprano or some other pop-culture-famous fictional character. But that is not how we believe in Him. More importantly, that is not true. Jesus Christ, God the Word, is not a jackalope, an Easter Bunny, a unicorn. He is. He was. He is to come. His very name, Yahweh, means "I am who I am," not "I am a fantasy."
