In this episode of Time for a Reset: Insights from Global Brand Marketers, host Tiffany Wilburn sits down with Mickey Nelson, Director of Brand Strategy and Insights at Land O'Lakes, to discuss the urgent need for a reset in how marketing portrays rural America. Mickey shares his perspective on why the industry has historically relied on romanticised or overly simplified tropes, often ignoring the modern innovation and diversity within these communities. He highlights how Land O'Lakes is addressing this through the Modern Rural Collective, an initiative aimed at convening storytellers and brands to reshape the cultural narrative using deep insights. The conversation delves into a groundbreaking partnership with Getty Images to close the gap in rural representation and the challenges of AI generated imagery that currently defaults to outdated caricatures. Mickey explains why rural is as much a mindset as it is a place and how authentic storytelling can build stronger connections across cultural divides. For marketers looking to move beyond one dimensional personas, this discussion offers a practical look at using real voices and data to drive meaningful impact while staying true to an organisation's core values.Topics Covered:The common misconceptions and outdated tropes used to portray rural lifeWhy rural America should be viewed as a mindset rather than just a locationHow the Modern Rural Collective at Land O'Lakes works to change cultural narrativesThe risks brands face when they flatten diverse audiences into simple personasAddressing the bias in AI and data tools regarding rural imageryThe partnership between Land O'Lakes and Getty Images to modernise visual librariesBuilding a collective of brands to solve large scale cultural problemsThe importance of metacognition and emotional awareness in leadershipEpisode Chapters:00:00:25 Introduction to Mickey Nelson and Land O'Lakes 00:01:42 The reset: Portraying rural America with accuracy00:04:10 Moving beyond the "red barn" and other outdated tropes 00:08:33 The danger of flattening consumer personas00:11:37 The mission of the Modern Rural Collective 00:13:24 Reframing the narrative through brand strategy 00:19:32 Checking AI for rural bias and stereotypes 00:22:12 Balancing authenticity with marketing at scale 00:28:11 The Getty Images partnership and re-picturing rural work 00:34:23 Being a convener brand to drive social impact 00:37:41 Skills for the next generation of culture shapers 00:40:21 Personal growth through metacognitionEpisode Highlights:00:03:21 The Myth of the Rural Monolith Mickey breaks down the common misconceptions that lead brands to flatten rural audiences. He discusses the specific visual shorthand that often dominates media and why it fails to capture the modern reality.00:11:37 Convening for Cultural Change Creating a collective of brands and storytellers can change a narrative more effectively than one brand alone. This segment explains the strategy behind a recent initiative to position rural areas as hubs of talent.00:19:32 AI and the Bias Loop Artificial intelligence often relies on data that reinforces existing stereotypes about farming and rural life. Mickey describes a simple experiment that highlights why marketers must work harder to feed the machine more diverse content.00:28:11 Visual Gaps in Representation A first of its kind research project revealed startling statistics about how rural people are depicted in global image libraries. This part of the chat focuses on the specific groups that are almost entirely absent from the visual record.00:40:21 Leadership and Metacognition Staying effective in a fast paced industry requires a level of self awareness that goes beyond technical skills. Gavri'el Wise is a professional actor best known for his recent portrayal of the Saviour in the "Greater Love" Easter video series produced by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Born in Minnesota to a Russian-Ukrainian mother and a Native American father, Gavri'el's journey with church film projects began at age 11. He appeared as a background actor in the Bible and Book of Mormon video series before being cast in the sacred role of Jesus Christ.I wanted to speak with Gavri'el to explore the spiritual and emotional weight of walking in the footsteps of the Saviour for the camera. We discuss his transition from a child actor to a lead performer, the rigorous preparation required for the role, and how his own history of early responsibility and solitude allowed him to connect with the humanity of Christ. Gavri'el opens up about how periods of loneliness in his youth became a "well" of introspection, helping him portray a Saviour who was always deeply observant of the world and those around Him.Some highlights from this episode include:A Lifelong Journey on Set: Gavri'el reflects on starting his acting career at age 11 on the Church's Jerusalem set and how those early experiences prepared him for the responsibility of portraying the Son of God.Channelling Personal Life Challenges: Gavri'el shares how growing up quickly and spending significant time in quiet observation of others allowed him to empathize with the "heavy knowledge" the Saviour carried."With More Love": A recurring piece of direction on the "Greater Love" set was to perform "with more love". Gavri'el explains how this challenged him to stop "acting" and start genuinely loving his fellow cast members. The Master Teacher: During his preparation, Gavri'el found that a study of the Sermon on the Mount led to him understanding the beauty behind the simple, yet Masterful way Jesus taught.Improvising the Last Supper: Gavri'el shares behind-the-scenes details about the sensitive, unscripted moments experienced during the filming of the Last Supper, where the cast shared real moments of peace and reflection. From Belief to Active Discipleship: A shift in Gavri'el's faith occurred when he realized that when the Saviour saves you, He "employs" you. He discusses the responsibility of being an active disciple in every aspect of life. You can keep up with Gavri'el and his future projects on social media:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/gavrielwise/The Greater Love Video can be found here:https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/easter-video-invites-all-to-find--greater-love--through-jesus-christFollow For All The Saints on social media for updates and inspiring content:www.instagram.com/forallthesaintspodhttps://www.facebook.com/forallthesaintspod/For All The Saints episodes are released every Monday on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and more:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVDUQg_qZIU&list=UULFFf7vzrJ2LNWmp1Kl-c6K9Qhttps://open.spotify.com/show/3j64txm9qbGVVZOM48P4HS?si=bb31d048e05141f2https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/for-all-the-saints/id1703815271If you have feedback or any suggestions for topics or guests, connect with Ben & Sean via hello@forallthesaints.org or DM on InstagramConversations to Refresh Your Faith. For All The Saints podcast was established in 2023 by Ben Hancock to express his passion and desire for more dialogue around faith, religious belief, and believers' perspectives on the topics of our day. While this original project never panned out, Jon Voight later accepted this role in a different film titled “Pope John Paul II” recounting the life of this great saint. We are honored to talk to Jon about his portrayal of John Paul II in this film and how this role brought him great peace and joy. Jon beautifully highlights the immense holiness of the pontiff and shares personal stories of meeting Pope Benedict XVI and Cardinal Dziwisz (JPII's right hand man). Anne Heche joins the Neil Haley Show to discuss her powerful role as Patricia Campbell, Deputy Director of Defense Intelligence for the United States, in NBC's action drama "The Brave," describing the intensive preparation required to portray such a high-ranking official. Heche explains that her character runs an Omega team—special forces units composed of Delta, SEAL, and CIA operatives—and must make life-and-death decisions that impact operations taking place 5,000 miles away while holding what she describes as an encyclopedia of knowledge about pain and darkness in the world. The show takes viewers to 13 different countries over 13 episodes, exploring how these elite teams work together across international boundaries to combat threats and maintain global peace. The actress reveals that her research included speaking with Pentagon officials who worked alongside Condoleezza Rice, and when she asked if there was anything to smile about in such a position, the answer was simply "no." However, Heche emphasizes that Patricia Campbell is not defined by darkness but rather by hope and the desire to solve the world's problems to create peace. She discusses how the role has changed her perspective on current events and news consumption, noting that someone she met at the Pentagon laughed at her for believing what she read in the New York Times, leading her to search for information in different places and recognize that what the public is told isn't always what's actually happening. Heche stresses the importance of telling stories about military personnel who sacrifice their lives daily, arguing that these teams operating in 136 countries deserve recognition for their service above self.

Two years later during his second deployment, his son was born – but at least he was able to video call for the birth. During Parker's two Afghanistan deployments, he was faced with countless traumatic events that were nothing short of soul-crushing. Words can seldom describe what leaving a safe and loving home for a combat zone is truly like. It's an internal struggle that many veterans have faced overseas. In Parker's words, "Quite honestly, I don’t believe there are any words in existence that could adequately describe the experiences we face overseas." But the nature of war does not allow for the time to process or grieve. This Marine was able to make it out on the other side okay, and he says, "I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt Got Your Six PTSD Support Dogs gave me my life back." After exiting the Marine Corps, the trauma Parker had been bottling up for years was very evident. He became an emotionless shell of a man. Logically, he knew that he "loved" his family, but all the emotions that he "should" have felt didn't exist. Heart-brokenly and simply put, he didn’t care about his son, his daughter, or his wife. The emotional connection to them was nonexistent - they seemed like complete strangers to him. This is the horrible reality to living with PTSD. Add to that the PTSD symptoms of depression, anxiety, anger, nightmares and so much more including the inability to sleep with about 1-3 hours total a night and rarely longer than 30-minute stints. In Parker's words, "Countless veterans have experienced the same turmoil and suffering I have. Many of which still haven’t received the help they need. Unfortunately, the VA leaves many of us behind... If it were not for the overwhelming generosity of GY6 and those who support their efforts, my life and many others like mine, would be completely different. I like to imagine our souls are like big puzzles, and PTSD destroys that puzzle. But every person at GY6 selflessly takes their own pieces… pieces of their own heart and soul… and gives them to these dogs, it's with those pieces I was finally able to start putting mine back together. I cannot say it enough... Got Your six changed my life, the lives of many others before me, and continue to change the lives of those who came after me. I will never be able to repay GY6 for what they did for me. My hope is to inspire generosity in others so that GY6 can continue their mission, saving lives for many years to come." Speaking on from when after he came home from war and stuck in a terrible cycle of PTSD symptoms of depression, anxiety, anger, nightmares, and sleeplessness, "After a while, and thanks to a persistent wife, I started seeking mental health help. But nothing ever fully worked for me. Some medications would take the edge off my symptoms, but the struggles were still there controlling every aspect of my life. At one point I was on 9 medications that barely scratched the surface. One of the hardest things I had to hear was my doctor saying "Parker, I am sorry... I honestly do not know what to do". I was devastated... I had been holding onto hope that the suffering was temporary. But after years of holding on to that hope, trying countless GOT YOUR SIX SERVICE DOGS TESTIMONIAL - PARKER NAHRGANG medications, countless therapy sessions, countless doctors, and THEN to hear your doctor say we're out of options… Then, by what I can only describe as "an act of God" my wife encountered Got Your Six PTSD Support Dogs. During this encounter they immediately welcomed her with open arms, encouraging her, and began pursuing to helping me. GY6 informed me that it would likely be 1-2 years before they would have a dog ready for me. It takes time to train these dogs, and I just needed to breath, and wait. But after about 5 or 6 months, once again, by what I can only call a direct act of God, GY6 had more dogs pass their training than expected. That’s when I received a call from Nicole Lanahan (founder of GY6), and she asked me if I was ready. I attended their Service Animal training and therapy retreat for 10 days, which was the start of my life changing. The people I met and built relationships with was unbelievable, these connections were something I hadn't felt in years. I finally had a community of other veterans that were in the exact same boat as me, it was a place of belonging. We were not alone anymore, GY6 was holding us together, supporting us, and giving us a priceless gift. I want to help you understand what these dogs like Eddie do…and what he did that first night. At some point in the night during a nightmare he had crawled on me, nudging me, comforting me, he was sensing every time there was a nightmare about to happen and he would wake me "just enough" to not fully wake me, but stop the nightmare from happening, he stood watch, remaining vigilant throughout the night protecting me. Journalist Honor Jones discusses her debut novel, Sleep, which explores the #MeToo movement from childhood to the newsroom through a unique fictional lens.Honor Jones's debut novel, Sleep, opens in the heat of a seemingly idyllic summer childhood, where ten-year-old Margaret navigates unspoken secrets within her home. But as the years unfold, the story quietly traces how early moments of confusion ripple forward into Margaret's adult life, particularly as she covers the Weinstein trial as a journalist. With a clear-eyed and unsettling voice, Sleep becomes a meditation on what women bury, what they minimize, and what begins to surface when the cultural tide shifts. In this intriguing conversation, Honor and I discuss:How journalism shaped her approach to fiction: Honor reflects on the transition from shaping others' stories to crafting her own and how editing longform narratives influenced her writing style.Writing a woman who can believe others but not herself: Margaret is a woman who has built a career amplifying the voices of survivors, yet has never fully named her own story. Honor explores how Margaret reconciles the gap between public belief and private suppression, and how the novel plays with what we notice versus what we choose not to see.Portraying the unspoken conversations around #MeToo: From the charged stillness of newsroom dynamics to a dinner party scene, Honor unpacks how people speak around harm instead of through it. We explore her decision to include moments of discomfort and how those honest tensions reflect the real ways people deal with trauma.

A long time CBC Radio stalwart has left the ranks of the Nahanni Fontaine fan club and has called for the NDP Government House Leader to resign her portfolio as Minister for Accessibility. Episode 32 has the details of Kim Wheeler's very personal analysis of Fontaine's twisted apology to the Deaf and hard of hearing community. Part 1- A recap of our most recent columns in the Winnipeg Sun: RBC abandons West End customers https://winnipegsun.com/opinion/columnists/gold-rbc-abandons-west-end-customersSt. Boniface Church threatened by bike lane getsunlikely champion (check the postscript below for late-breaking news about it)https://winnipegsun.com/opinion/columnists/gold-st-boniface-church-threatened-by-bike-lane-gets-unlikely-champion8.10 Part 2- Even before she entered politics, Nahanni Fontaine expressed prejudice towards white people and made excuses for aboriginal gang culture. As an NDP government advisor she demeaned domestic violence shelter supporters, and even after election to the Legislature, Fontaine concealed her name change for years until we uncovered it. Now she's exposed her nasty disposition after insulting an interpreter translating her speech to indigenous graduates, for daring to be in her line of sight. We set the scene of a government organized ceremony to celebrate the academic achievement of her indigenous 'sisters', and how APTN bravely told the public about Fontaine's post-speech tantrum about being "thrown off" because "the woman shouldn't have been on the stage."Hear the experience of a parent at the event who saw that the interpreter was removed after Fontaine's tirade: "When you disrespect the interpreter, you disrespect the Deaf community."After the APTN broadcast, the St. John's MLA gave an apology made up of word salad and BS. You'll hear how this isn't the first time Fontaine has claimed objectionable comments she was party to were somehow "private".18.00 Free Press columnist Dan Lett tried to help the embattled Fontaine off the hook, claiming demands for her to quit were coming only from the opposition PCs. Portraying her Families Minister portfolio in Wab Kinew's government as minor and her stint as being "low-key", Lett ignored her self-promoting TikTok branding and her ongoing support for Hamas and anti-Zionist canards. Lett called her remarks "ill-advised." But as Kim Wheeler pointed out, there was no advice involved. This was Fontaine, being herself. "The other side is calling the minister to account. And they should. It was behaviour unbecoming an MLA and the Minister Responsible for Accessibility. It is ableist. And if she is comfortable saying this at a public event, what does she say behind closed doors?"As the mother of a Deaf daughter, and friends with a similar family at the ceremony, Wheeler posted that "Nahanni Fontaine must be held to account. She should resign her portfolio as Minister Responsible for Accessibility."In front of the most favourable hometown crowd possible, Nahanni Fontaine couldn't keep her ego in check. We have all the details, with some additional insight. We know what Wade Williams would say.32.15 Part 3 - The Season Six campaign is closing in on $2000, as we drive towards the $10k target.Marty tells how you can contribute towards making sure the costs of being Your Voice are met so we can continue holding City Hall, the Manitoba NDP government, bureaucracies and institutions - and the local media - accountable to you, your family and your community. For more details or to send an E-Transfer- email martygoldlive@gmail.com*****Post production Postscript- Not so fast, Bike Lobby. We learned that St. Boniface Councillor Matt Allard has sent a letter to the Public Works committee asking for the 'Moving on Marion' project to be put on hold until he has a chance to ensure the Norwood Grove Biz, the Church at 380 Marion, and the area residents can have a proper say in the plan. Cozy Murders and Soccer Sidelines: Deirdre Sullivan on Writing Her Debut Novel

Political Contessa

Play Episode Listen Later May 29, 2025 31:22

In this week’s episode, Jennifer welcomes Deirdre Sullivan, an emerging author and mother of four daughters based in the Boston area. Deirdre began her writing journey with a passion for storytelling that was sparked in high school and continued through the publication of three children’s books. As her children grew, so did her writing style, leading her to explore adult fiction and ultimately craft a debut murder mystery novel inspired by real-life events closely connected to her community. Deirdre is also a participant in Jack Grapes’ Los Angeles-based writing classes, which have helped her transform thousands of words of personal journaling into a fully developed manuscript form. Jennifer and Deirdre discuss the challenges and rewards of reinventing oneself after years spent raising a family, particularly for women returning to the workforce or creative pursuits. This episode delves into controversial topics, such as the Karen Read trial in Massachusetts—a case that significantly influenced Deirdre’s novel and has captivated local media and social media spheres. The conversation openly navigates the intimidation of sharing deeply personal creative work, the nuances of portraying real-life inspiration in fictional form, and the subtle power dynamics within upper-tier social circles. Listeners will appreciate insights into why embracing vulnerability, authentic storytelling, and active listening are essential in both the arts and everyday life. “It’s so easy for people to critique and sort of knock us down. So you do have to have some thick skin to be—to shut out that noise.” –~Deirdre Sullivan Today on Political Contessa: Reinvention is possible at any stage, especially for mothers considering new beginnings after raising children. Personal experiences and local headlines can serve as powerful inspiration for fiction writing. Authenticity in storytelling comes from writing for oneself rather than catering to outside expectations. Portraying community figures in fiction requires careful blending of character elements to avoid overly obvious real-life parallels. Crafting a novel is an intensely personal endeavor; sharing it publicly requires confidence and resilience in the face of criticism. The Cinematography Podcast Episode 311: Jacques Jouffret, ASC Netflix's American Primeval plunges viewers into the harsh realities of a gritty, naturalistic Western winter. Cinematographer Jacques Jouffret, ASC, who shot all six episodes, collaborated closely with director Peter Berg to immerse the audience in the era's unforgiving environment. “That was really a lot of hard work. Pete wanted the audience to feel the difficulty of living in that period,” says Jacques. “He wanted to feel the dirt, dust, grime and the ugliness of it and the violence of it. And I tried to get into that spirit. My job was to really make the audience feel that coldness, the chill that you are open to the elements.” Jacques wanted the audience to feel the cold of American Primeval's harsh winter setting, even as the production continued into summer. One of the most significant challenges was maintaining a consistently overcast sky, and there were few interior locations. During the wintertime, it was easy to shoot wider to get the overcast sky, but the weather was constantly changing. Dutch angles worked not only as a stylistic choice, but also to help hide the sky when it wasn't overcast enough. The crew would strategically shoot close, shoot in the shade, or block the sky with silks. Portraying visceral realism is an important element of Jacques and Berg's collaborations. They have worked together before on films such as Novocaine and Mile 22. “That's one thing that I love working with Pete,” he shares. “You're making the audience feel that this is real, you are watching something that is right there and I'm able to suspend that disbelief. And so that's really always the approach, to make it as real as we can. And yet I'm giving it some style to present more of the emotion, more of the mood, the atmosphere, and where I want the audience to be.” To achieve a blend of raw reality and stylistic emotional depth on American Primeval, Jacques adopted a focused visual strategy, inspired by the legendary director Stanley Kubrick. Kubrick would choose just four or five strong visual ideas, and then repeat them over and over for visual impact. For the series, Jacques established his own core visual tenets: Expansive vistas: Super wide shots to take in the vastness of the Western scenery Dynamic Dutch angles: Wide and close dutch camera angles to increase the feeling of discomfort and danger, while still including visuals critical to the story Intimate compression: Lenses with long focal lengths that compress the image, allowing the audience to be with the character in the moment Juxtaposition of extremes: A deliberate contrast between wide, long shots with everything in focus, contrasted with close-ups on the actors with a wide angle lens. This created a visual language emphasizing the harsh environment, and Jacques avoided medium shots.
