In this episode on Heritage Mezcal, I had the opportunity to have a delightful conversation with Eric Zandona. He is an incredibly booze-informed gentleman, and the organizer of the ADI'S International Spirits Competition, which, if you were to ask me, offers a great chance for brands of all sizes to break into the US market. Especially if you have something that may shock the nerds. They are not sponsoring this episode, but after being invited a few times as a judge, I can say that I've never met a group of people that cared about and loved spirits with such passion. That being said, this episode covers a lot of ground, but was originally inspired by a petition published in Change Org by Pepe Tequilas titled: “Highlighting the Importance of Protecting Agave's Biocultural Heritage”. I prefer not to throw any major spoilers in this introduction, but let's just say that both Eric and I would love for agave spirits' beauty to prevail for at least another thousand years.

We talk about that adventure plus all the other dangerous things we did as kids like sliding down stairs on a pillow or the time Lacey got stuck in the laundry chute. Patty discusses her time bonding with Vanessa over Zoom as they played a game that Jonah still doesn't understand called Mafia, we discuss the origins of the term "Schnecken" and Patty's favorite hometown foods. We also reminisce about the phenomenon of the wearable personal stereo known as POCKET ROCKERS and the fact that both Patty and Vanessa owned the minicasette of Tiffany's version of "I Think We're Alone Now." Plus, we marvel at the wide variety of artists who allowed their music to be licensed to what was essentially a toy and the fact that Jonah didn't realize that their theme song was a Creedence Clearwater Revival hit that was retooled as a catchy jingle. Last but not least, we play a game of CHANGE.DORK where we review petitions about knee-high Converse sneakers, official high school anthems and a polarizing opinion on string cheese etiquette.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

You may know Andy Richter as the longtime sidekick for Conan O'Brien, but he's also a very accomplished actor, writer, comedian and podcaster. Andy came by HDWGW this week to discuss the difficulties of fish taxidermy, his Chicago comedy roots and some of his favorite Late Night With Conan O'Brien musical acts ranging from The Breeders to Tony Bennett. We also recall fond memories of hanging out at our local shopping malls in the 80s and 90s and our favorite food court picks. Along the way, Vanessa laments the demise of the Original Cookie Company and Jonah talks about buying a Body Count CD at Record Town thanks to their lax parental advisory policy. Finally, we have an impassioned round of change.org where we debate whether our collective energy should be directed toward the return of PB&J Oatmeal Cream Pies, accountability for the Lethal Weapon TV series or the availability Twinkies in a high school cafeteria. Plus, we get in-depth about the history of the beloved childhood juice, squeezits, and if we really want to see snack foods advertised as sentient beings. Lindsay began her journey in Talent Acquisition in 2013 and is passionate about partnering with company leaders to develop thoughtful and efficient practices that attract diverse talent. Tune in to learn Lindsay's thoughts on opportunities to make systems more equitable, proactively preventing burnout, leveraging employee feedback to make change, and more!About AllVoicesIn today's workforce, people often don't feel empowered to speak up and voice their opinions about workplace issues, including harassment, bias, and other culture issues. This prevents company leadership from making necessary changes, and prevents people from feeling fulfilled, recognized, and included at work. At AllVoices, we want to change that by providing a completely safe, anonymous way for people to report issues directly to company leaders. This allows company leadership real transparency into what's happening in their companies—and the motivation to address issues quickly. Our goal is to help create safer, more inclusive companies. To learn more about AllVoices visit us at www.allvoices.co!

Brown III and other executives associated with homeless and housing nonprofits in New York City have derived significant personal financial benefit from the organizations they run. “An investigation by The Times, based on hundreds of pages of legal filings, business records and tax documents, as well as interviews with homeless people, city officials and shelter employees, found that under the cloak of charity, executives at nonprofits have collected large salaries, spent their budgets on companies that they or their families controlled and installed relatives in high-paying jobs.” The article goes on to highlight self-dealing, nepotism, and a disregard for the people who are supposed to benefit from NYC's expansive homeless housing infrastructure. A government audit ordered by NYC Mayor Bill DeBlasio is expected to wrap up in the coming months. How to drive social change at scale - with Nick Allardice - VP of Product & Design at Change.org

The How Things Grow Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 18, 2019 43:02

My guest today is someone with a very unconventional background. Nick Allardice is the VP of Product & Design at Change.org. Nick started his career as an activist - about as far from the world of tech products as you can imagine. He joined Change.org because it was a tech enabled social platform that could have larger impact than the world of activism that he was in. He led Change.org's internationalization effort - and subsequently the campaigns team before heading up Change.org's product team. In today's very fascinating conversation, we talk about not just what truly drives social change and policy change, but also how growth strategies helped Change.org make a very dramatic transition in its business model. We dive into the mechanics of online activism and how technology & Change.org have fundamentally shifted the way we bring about social change. I'm very excited for this unique and unconventional perspective on growth & social change.KEY HIGHLIGHTSWhat inspired Nick to move from activism to a tech enabled social enterprise. the ambition and scale that comes from being a venture backed social enterprise that makes them more effective than non-profits.How public benefit companies sit at the intersection of for-purpose and for-profit - and how these can unlock exponentially more capital for doing good in the world than currently exists. There are numerous tools available to activists worldwide - protests, events, rallies, calling up politicians, lobbying the press - and more. Why Change.org focuses on petitions. Why Change.org's lead-generation model wasn't sustainable. What they found when they looked at their fundamentals and their competition. What their new revenue model was - and what strategies made a difference to their transition, and what were the key things they did to make sure the team's culture changed. The common characteristics of petitions that take off. Change.org's principle of ‘winning loudly' - and how that is a principle behind magnifying petitions. How Change.org prioritizes countries that are socially important but have low revenue. How Change.org changed its legal structure to handle these things - and how Change.org isn't a revenue maximizing entity even though it's for-profit.What drives policy change? How petitions catalyze a constellation of media & offline coverage that magnifies the impact of the campaign. Why targeting companies is more likely to lead to change than targeting politicians.Check out the full transcript and show notes here:https://howthingsgrow.co/how-to-drive-social-change-at-scale-with-nick-allardice-vp-of-product-design-at-change-org/**Get more goodies here:http://MobileUserAcquisitionShow.comhttp://RocketShipHQ.comhttp://RocketShipHQ.com/blog
