There is so much more that we should expect from fathers outside of being a provider. Unhealthy views on masculinity and low emotional intelligence among many men have led to plenty of fathers failing to equip their sons with the needed traits to handle their emotions and relationships. In most cases, the father's inability to do either of these things ends up hurting their sons. In this episode of the Himprovement Podcast, I spoke with the transformational coach, Kevin Benevides. A major issue that leads to many relationships failing is partners not being on the same page with their expectations. How can we combat this? There are two factors that will make a major difference: 1)filtering based on whether or not they are compatible with what you value in your life and 2) being as authentic and open as possible so that you both know what to expect. In this episode of the Himprovement Podcast, I spoke to Joey Chandler, a purpose-based relationship coach, to get some clarity and wisdom about these topics. Listen to learn more. In today's episode with Scott Carson, we discussed some of the issues that I am dealing with currently. The bottom line is that I have my own things that I struggle with, just like you guys. From the energy of this one, you all can probably tell that some things are weighing on me. With the major changes that have happened in my life the past few months, which were not all mentioned out of respect of the privacy of others, it has been hard to be optimistic. I'm working on it though. Scott and I brainstormed for solutions so that I can work my way back into being my regular self. To give a heads up, this was recorded about a month and a half ago before publishing, so many things have changed since this talk. Hopefully, you guys gain something from the conversation. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/himprovement/message

**Recorded on 9/11/2021 I want to warn you all that the format of today's episode is a little bit outside of the usual box. Most of the time, you guys hear me interviewing other people, but in this interview, the roles are flipped. After receiving some feedback from a listener, I was forced to reflect. I haven't been completely candid or forthcoming with you guys about my background and experiences, and that serves as proof that I have not fully healed. And it doesn't sit right with me to preach about the importance of mental health and healing if I'm avoiding parts of my own development. With the help of Scott Carson, a past guest on the podcast, I decided to address an issue that has been plaguing me for my whole life, and that issue is the shame, embarrassment, and side effects that I've experienced from my home life growing up. I've hidden this part of myself from others for so long and have never really told the story of my upbringing. After listening to the recording a few times, I wish that I had covered more, but this is at least a start. Our conversation was 100% authentic and off-the-cuff as it was from a weekly call that I do with Scott to catch up and address my personal challenges. The main thing that I talked about in this interview is the role of my father in my development. He had been involved in a large portion of my life, but as of the time that I'm recording this I will say that it has been about a year and a half to 2 years since I've had any sort of a relationship with him. At first it was difficult, but after therapy and multiple months without any real contact, it was something I learned to live with. From the reflection that I had done as well as the feedback that I had gotten from those that support me, it seems as though it was the best outcome for both of us. I don't bring these things up to shame him, but I do think that painting a picture of my perception of him gives you all major insights into what I am fixing within myself and why the work I do on this platform is so important to me. This episode will give you guys a better idea of who I am and what shaped me. In future episodes, I plan to touch more on how I believe my experiences with my father affected me psychologically, bring light to the positives that came from our past relationship, and I'll also make sure to address the role of my mother in my development, good and bad. I know this might be tough to listen to since I'm obviously not the most captivating speaker, especially when I'm discussing uncomfortable topics, but I hope you guys like me enough as a host to listen in full and try to understand who I am. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/himprovement/message

When you were in high school or college, an older person might have said to you, "these are going to be the best years of your life." Have you ever wondered why that is the case for the majority of people? The best times of their lives were when they had the least amounts of knowledge, money, and control over their lives. If you look at the most successful people you know, plenty would probably say the opposite. Life became better when they gained full control over their lives and began working to be the best version of themselves. Here where the disconnect is; So many of us pursue short-term pleasure instead of fulfilment. As you get older, it's harder to pursue pleasure as you gain more responsibility and your looks and health decline. However, chasing fulfillment works in the opposite way. In this episode of the Himprovement Podcast, I spoke with Alan Lazaros, co-host of Next Level University, business coach, and a consultant. He gave some insights on what life is like when you make the switch to chasing fulfillment along with some tips for how someone who is struggling to find motivation can find their catalyst for change. Plenty of people think that their happiness and fulfillment will come from things like making more money, buying nice cars, and traveling. What most don't realize is that while these things do make life more interesting, they usually don't have nearly as much of an effect on our happiness and fulfillment as personal development. A lot of times, the external markers of success that people are looking for end up being side effects of them working to be the best version of themselves and living an authentic, productive life. What do you say to someone that's grieving? How do you handle your own grief? When you put yourself in a challenging leadership position, it is likely that the areas where you personally struggle will be exposed. What's the first step to making the change that you want to see in your life? Take accountability for your results. We may not be able to control all of the aspects that have led to our current situation, but we can definitely decide what we plan to do with the hand we were dealt. No one that I've had on the show so far is a better example of how powerful it is to take accountability than this week's guest on the Himprovement Podcast. Michael Unbroken, a life coach, mentor, and expert at helping adult victims of childhood trauma. had an upbringing that was as tough as it can get in America. Abusive drug-addict family members, instability, and a lot of other challenges would have all been great excuses for him to never amount to anything in life. He almost fulfilled that expectation, too. However, when he chose to take accountability for his future, he was able to reinvent himself and turn things around along with finding ways to use his trauma to help others. A lot of young men come from backgrounds that are far from ideal, and their struggles play a major role in the development of their self-worth and identity. Some choose to stay within the confines of their situation and build their life and identity around it while others look to grow. The only difference between these two groups of men is a single choice, the choice to try and learn how to be better. In this episode of Himprovement, I spoke with Jeff AD Martin, an award-winning public speaker, author, and entrepreneur who has inspired many young people to be the best version of themselves by sharing his own story of making that one crucial choice that completely changed the trajectory of his life. When life doesn't go as expected, it can lead to us experiencing a range of negative states and emotions. The two that are the biggest threats to men are anger and depression. Anger has pushed many men to make dire mistakes that ruined their lives and hurt others, and depression combined with the lack of training to unpack and communicate emotions has led to men committing suicide at a rate 3.5 times higher than women. Lesleigh Tolin, a grief recovery specialist and the guest in this week's episode of Himprovement, explains how most negativity that we go through mentally, like the examples given, falls under the umbrella of grief. With that being said, it's in our best interest to make sure that we deal with our grief in productive ways. Watch to learn about Lesleigh's grief recovery method. Hurt people hurt other people. Anyone can decide to be resentful and unforgiving to the people who harmed them, but how many can forgive? In order to forgive, you have to see the culprit through a different set of eyes, no longer through the perspective of a victim but instead that of an empathizer. Ask yourself what it is about their past that led them to move through life the way that they do. Most people aren't born malevolent. My theory is that the people among us who harm others took on their antisocial tendencies as a defense mechanism against threats, physical or psychological, in their given environment to deal with their own pain. Those that are aware of the damage they do probably see it as a necessity due to the cynical outlook on life that their experiences and the influence of the people around have helped shape. In this episode of Himprovement, Scott Carson, one of the hosts of the Campfire Project and the co-founder of the Business of Smiles, shares a similar take on this and even tells his own story of how he came to this realization when reconciling with his father. It seems as though we have robbed ourselves of the freedom to be authentically human. How many of us hide our emotions from the people we care about or pretend to be somebody that we're not when we're in the public eye?
