Driven by the belief that we all have a responsibility to each other and to the planet, and mobilised by technology and newfound connectivity, today’s next generation philanthropists are drawing on best practice from the private sector and the innovations of technology to tackle some of the intractable wicked problems of our era. This set of individuals and corporations have greater resources, power, position and prerogative to participate in the solution. Their approach to philanthropy mirrors the rigour, structure, and expectations of investment return of the for-profit world, and they invest for impact. This month Insight takes an inspiring look at three individuals who personify the tireless optimism and activism of new wave philanthropy, participating in the benevolent business of make our communities, our country and our world a better place: • Clare Ainsworth Herschell was inaugural Next Gen Development Manager at the Art Gallery of NSW for 4 years, and is Clare now putting her full energies to combatting climate change with initiatives such as an annual trip to the Heron Island research station with Professor Tim Flannery and other change-makers across multiple industries. • Hamish Balnaves is CEO of the Balnaves Foundation and represents the second-generation philanthropy. His degree in Economics from Sydney University and his 10-year career as a teacher has put him in good stead to make strategic and informed decisions as the foundation disperses over $3 million annually to not-for-profit organisations that aim to create a better Australia through education, medicine and the arts. • Jane Jose is CEO of the Sydney Community Foundation. She brings decades of experience in working with the design professions, government leaders and corporate Australia to her philanthropy work at the Sydney Community Foundation. “The best investment on earth is earth.” Louis Glickman, an American real estate investor, and philanthropist Over the 230 years of European settlement, we have been dividing and conquering and subdividing this great southern land. As the engine room of our built environment, Australia’s construction industry comprises 8% of the GDP, contributing $134.2 billion to the country’s economy. The sector, spanning civil, commercial and residential projects, employing over 1.1 million people. Intrinsically related to the construction industry are the commercial and residential property markets. As of December 2012, the estimated Australian institutional-grade commercial property stock was AU$681 billion in 2012. The size of the core property investment market (office, retail and industrial) is AU$280 billion of which approximately AU$195 billion (70%) is owned by Australian Institutions. At its 2017 peak, Australia’s housing market was valued at $6.9 trillion (ABS 2018). Australians reportedly spend twice as much time researching property than exercising at the gym (1.08 hours) or speaking to their parents (0.88 hours). This month Insight looks at property from the lens of residential, commercial and construction sectors. Ivan Bresic started a real estate internship at age 17 and in 2003 partnered with Shannan Whitney to form Bresic Whitney from a two-man band to a team of around 100 staff within 4 offices located in Darlinghurst, Glebe, Balmain & Hunters Hill. Barrie Barton is the founder of Right Angle Studio, a company on a mission to understand and improve life in our cities. Their placemaking prowess is sought by commercial property developers and institutional landlords to create commercially and culturally successful urban environments. “All that matters is talent. Talent wins.” Ed Michaels, a Director of McKinsey & Company (2018) who first coined the ‘War For Talent’ rubric in 2008 Across the globe and across all industries, a company’s success is predicated on how well they attract, engage, retain and develop their human ‘talent’. If you want to win big in the war for talent, you need to understand how dramatically the landscape has changed, and what your workers want. Business owners and leaders fear losing their workers to competitors, or to the lure of self-employment. On the flip side, most workers (85% according to Gallup’s 2017 State of the Global Workplace report) are disengaged and dissatisfied with their jobs. What they need is a better match up – the right person for the job, and the right environment within which they can thrive. To help us understand how to utilise recruiting strategies and cultural engagement propositions to appeal to an increasingly complex and diverse talent ecosystem, we have assembled a panel of experts: Esther Clerehan is THE go-to recruiter for the creative industry, having worked with some of the world’s biggest agencies and the industry’s brightest minds. She is a dedicated mentor and coach (2018 Mentor of the Year, B&T Women in Media Awards), and knows how to achieve a winning match between talent and workplace; Shane Currey is Leader of Employee Experience within Deloitte’s Human Capital practice and TED speaker on unleashing creativity in corporations. He works with clients to co-create a complete workplace experience that unites workers and engages them in work that is productive, motivating and enjoyable; Kate Messenger is Director of Meme Partners, a specialist consultancy, engaging employees to put more into and get more out of their work. Kate and her team help create meaning in the workplace, by finding alignment between organisational priorities and employees’ core needs. In our post-truth era credible and measured public discourse has given way to emotive rhetoric, opinionated half-truths, and downright lies. With the advent of social media our democratic privilege to freedom of speech has metastasised out of control. What is the true and right is hard to parse when even “truth isn’t truth”, as infamously retorted by Rudy Giuliani when questioned about the Russia investigation on NBC’s “Meet the Press” (Aug. 19, 2018). To discuss the erosion of truth throughout institutions, politics, media and every level of society we have assembled an expert panel: Kate McClymont is a leading investigative journalist in Australia, having spent 3 decades unearthing scandal, corruption and fraud from the seedy underbelly to the highest levels of government; Reverend Toby Neal is an ordained Anglican Minister and weaves together pop culture, philosophy, anthropology, and the arts to speak to share Biblical truths; Professor Nick Enfield is a Professor of Linguistics at the University of Sydney and Head of ‘The Sydney Initiative for Truth’ (SIFT). In Australia women represent only 34 per cent of entrepreneurs, but the number of female entrepreneurs is growing at a faster rate than for men. Showing resilience in the face of glass ceilings, gender bias, pay gaps, and hugely disproportionate VC funding, a new breed of female founders is taking the start-up world by storm. This month The Office Space honours the female founders working against the odds to make their business idea a commercial reality. We have assembled a line-up of women-led businesses that are giving the men a run for their money: Alyce Tran – co-founder of The Daily Edited, this former lawyer has created a monogrammed leather goods business valued at $30million; Anthia Koullouros – founder and CEO of Ovvio Organics, this practising naturopath and herbalist has created a range of award-winning herbal teas and tisanes now sold around the world; Cindy Luken – this food scientist and former chef sold her biscuit empire and is now building a beauty empire, Luk Beautifood, based on lipsticks made from natural products. * Please note our Friday champagne brunch format About Insight by The Office Space Now in its fifth year of production, Insight by The Office Space is a business talk series that brings together innovative entrepreneurs and business leaders to explore burgeoning topics and reveal the secrets of their success under a monthly theme. The ‘future of work’ and the ‘future of the workplace’ topics have been dominated by talk of automation and AI, however, the future workplace isn’t defined by tech. It’s created for people. Extraordinary advances in technology have completely deconstructed the modern workplace to put human potential first. This paves the way for a more nuanced working landscape that is founded on deep data and cutting edge technology but designed for optimal feel and function. This February The Office Space re-commences its popular Insight program by exploring The Future Workplace, and how it will be crafted with people, not technology, at the fore. Naomi Tosic, Co-founder of The Office Space, will host an expert panel of workplace innovators: William Smart, Founder of Smart Design Studio and multi-award winning Architect, will share the genesis and vision for Stokes 14, the new SDS headquarters within an Alexandria warehouse. Sarah Zerella, Organisational Psychologist for Schiavello International, will reveal her latest research findings on ‘The influence of office layout features on employee perception of organizational culture’; Dr Martin Tomitsch, Associate Professor in Design and the Head of Design Lab at the University of Sydney, will talk on about skills, attributes and attitudes we need for the future. Insight: Climate Changemakers On September 2015 at an historic UN Summit, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development were agreed by 193 members of the UN General Assembly officially came into force. The new Goals are unique in that they call for action by all countries, poor, rich and middle-income to promote prosperity while protecting the planet. Despite our wealth of natural and economic resources, Australia’s overall response to climate change is appalling. The Climate Change Performance Index has ranked us 57 out of 60 countries, and rated China’s climate efforts as higher than Australia’s. Thankfully, large-scale corporate initiatives, standout sustainability ambassadors, and a groundswell of grass roots activists are embracing transformation and taking up the cause. This month Insight features three outstanding sustainability crusaders making waves for a better future: Ronni Kahn – CEO and Founder of Ozharvest, international food waste speaker, United Nations Environment Partner, and member of the Federal Government’s National Food Waste Strategy Steering Committee; Rod Simpson – Inaugural Environment Commissioner of the Greater Sydney Commission, and Associate Professor of Architecture, Design and Planning (UTS and University of Sydney); Clare Press – Vogue’s sustainability editor, sustainable fashion crusader, podcaster (Wardrobe Crisis), and author of a new book about activism, Rise & Resist, How to Change the World (MUP). Insight: Fluid Cities “Urban design within a complex city can be understood as a kind of ‘urban choreography’, not a micromanagement of the form or the life of the city, but a practice of framing, shepherding, enabling and constraining.” Kim Dovey (Professor of Architecture and Urban Design at the University of Melbourne) This month, in conjunction with Right Angle Studio and as part of the Sydney Architecture Festival, Insight considers the role of architects and an army of data scientists, placemakers, urban planners, sustainability experts and policy makers to keep our cities connected, considered, and liveable. In the face of increasing density, diversity and demand, we consider how cities can be more “fluid”, more organic and adaptive, surging and receding in step with the changing needs of its inhabitants. We also ask how movement flow can be improved across and between cities, and how to create compelling and functional public and private spaces where people can pool and gather. Helping us to understand the role of design, planning and good policy in managing the ebbs and flows of a city in flux are our panel guests: Philip Vivian, Director, Bates Smart: Philip has led the Sydney studio of Bates Smart for over 20 years picking up no less than 24 AIA Design Awards along the way. Philip is highly sought for his vision and critical thinking, he talks regularly on cities, density, tall buildings and sustainable urban development. Kim Crestani, Director, Order Architects/City Architect, Parramatta City Council: A member of the Urban Design Review Panels for the NSW SICEEP (Sydney International Convention, Exhibition and Entertainment Precinct), Westconnex and Sydney Metro City & Southwest projects, Kim founded the multi-award-winning Order Architects almost immediately after graduating 30 years ago. Bruce Taper, Director, Kinesis: With 20 years’ experience in sustainability and planning, the former director of Sustainability and Metropolitan Planning for the NSW Department of Planning founded Kinesis in 2007 and has since delivered the groundbreaking PRECINX rating tool for Landcom and the Decentralised Energy Master Plan for the City of Sydney. Insight: Social Strategies Almost eight in ten Australians (79%) are now on social media, and more than half (56%) access social platforms more than five times per day (Sensis, 2018). The prevalence, penetration and frequency of social media use makes these social platforms the biggest marketplace in the world, some 3 billion people worldwide. To be successful, it is now almost mandatory for a business to not just participate in social media, but to have a sophisticated and strategic approach. Social media marketing allows businesses to increase awareness, drive sales leads, retain customers and nurture a loyalty consumer base, and communicate directly with customers. This month we bring together an Influencer, an online editor, and a digital marketing lecturer to help us harness the power of social media for our businesses. Meet our panelists: Sammy Preston: Newly-minted editor of The Urban List, previously Foxtel Lifestyle Channel online editor; Tom Willis: Chief Marketing Officer at LawPath, and Head Lecturer in Digital Marketing at General Assembly; Louise Edmonds: Fashion Writer (SMH), Founder of MenStylePower, and TV Producer for Hillsong Channel.
