Alexis Garcia Alexis Garcia, born and raised in Miami, Florida, is an accomplished film producer, studio executive, and entrepreneur, widely recognized for his role in launching and scaling high-impact film ventures across the independent and studio landscape. Village Roadshow, no small player in the movie industry, this week filed for Chapter 11. They have been having some legal issues with another major studio. But they sighted along with that their other overriding problem, the actors' strike. You remember that? It was more than actors, of course, it was the whole industry. Hollywood came to a stop for months as they argued over pay and conditions. Some of the pay and conditions were based around what was seen at the time as this frightening new development called AI that was potentially going to slash their work and income. They wanted protections. It was eventually settled but, and here is the really big question, at what cost? Hollywood has never come back and the movie industry has never been the same. Irony of ironies a lot of people lost their jobs. Not because of AI, but because they never recovered from the shuttering as a result of the strike. So given fewer movies were made, less income was generated, and the vicious cycle began. That was until someone like Village Roadshow could no longer go on, so they folded for Chapter 11. Chapter 11, if you don't know is not the end. It can be the end, but initially it's about some protection to get some affairs in order and potentially get a rescuer. The lesson here is unionism. This is what this is. Hollywood, the film, and television industry is heavily unionised. It's one of those ideas that, once upon a time might have made a modicum of sense, but as the world and the workplace has changed and got increasingly sophisticated now presents as an old idea that does more harm than good. So they go on strike, the multi millionaire actors back them , food parcels are handed out, they pound the picket line, and they eventually cut a deal. Is that good? Not if you then go and lose your job, not if the studio then goes and files for Chapter 11. What's the point of that? What would you rather have? More money for fewer people? Or more people? Because that's what unionism does. So, was the strike a win or a path to joblessness and business ruin? Hello and welcome to Red Carpet Rookies, today's guest earned his early entertainment industry stripes working at Village Roadshow and Leonardo DiCaprio's production company Appian Way, later transitioning to the world of literary management, where he has since set up his own management and production company Bellevue Productions.There his clients have had projects set up at Warner Brothers, Paramount Pictures, Fox, and more, some of which he has taken to producing himself, for example, Infinite starring Mark Wahlberg and Netflix's Eli. My guest is John Zaozirny. 

This weeks podcast starts with a debate about whether we can drink beer at 9am, which is the time that we recorded this episode. Leading to a chat about an other drinks that we might have enjoyed over the years, and what the 'kids' are drinking these days. Ox tells us about how he stops his son from drinking all his drinks in the bar fridge at home.While we're talking drinking, Marko tells the story of being arrested when he first got to the US for driving on the wrong side of the road. We want to find his mugshot from the Lubbock City police department in Texas. Talking mugshots, Ox and Marko chat about the Nick Nolte one, and the Hugh Grant mugshot. Mark cannot believe Hugh Grant was going out with Liz Hurley at the time he did the wrong thing. Ox agrees, and both reckon Liz Hurley has the greatest voice ever.Given they're talking drinks, inevitably Ox and Marko start talking nightclubs; one of their favourite topics, and Marko tells a story about a night out at the New Orleans club in Melbourne in the 90s after 100 drinks which could have derailed his golf career. The pod switches tack then into stupid things we all did when we were younger. Ox talks about a nasty BMX accident caused by him being a muppet as a kid; and Marko talks about bad behaviour in a sponsor-provided car when he was 21 with six passengers in a 2-door car. Marko is in vigorous agreement. It leads onto another business idea from Ox, which he thinks will make millions if Village Roadshow take it onboard. Ox then puts our podcast license at risk with an appalling story about Ballarat in Victoria.Mark then raises a personal example of Civil Selfishness involving his and Ox's business, Assembled Media, involving the staff kitchen. Marko's obsession with neatness and cleanliness has caused him to get very worked up and he's not happy. Ox has a second business idea, that he reckons could make millions; this time Marko agrees! Episode 31 of The Blank Canvas Podcast with Radek Sali. It takes sheer guts and determination to succeed on a grand scale and there is usually some point where the person puts everything they have on the line. This week’s guest is no exception and fortunately for him, the gamble paid off. Radek Sali - started out working the candy bar in his local suburban Village cinema and worked his way up to Operations Manager of Village Roadshow. Radek joined the Swisse Wellness group as Operations Manager in 2005, a couple years later he’d become CEO, he steered the company from it’s annual turnover of $14 million to it’s sale 10 years on - for 1.7 Billion dollars. Incredibly, just nine months before that deal went ahead, the shareholders of Swisse nearly accepted an offer of just $30 million, which would have left Radek bankrupt due to $15 million in personal debt. I directed many TV commercials for Swisse leading up to the sale of the company - in particular their campaign for the Rio Olympics. The staff culture was something to behold at Swisse and played a huge role in the success of brand, and this was clearly driven by their inspirational leader.
