Ronni Kahn's energy and passion brings a much needed voice to one of the most significant issues Australia faces: food insecurity, including the mental and physical tolls such insecurity places on women. Through OzHarvest, Kahn's built a team of staff and volunteers who rescue food and repurpose it for those who need it most. But in 2025, during a cost-of-living crisis and housing crisis, OzHarvest is highlighting the more than 50,000 people who get turned away from food services every month and the very real and simple solutions available for us to do something about it. We discuss the new research from OzHarvest out today, as well as how Ronni Kahn remains so dedicated to her purpose so many years after founding OzHarvest, and the serious work still ahead. In Episode 2 of Season 12, I chat with Ronni Kahn AO, social entrepreneur and founder and CEO of food rescue charity OzHarvest. Ronni may call herself an accidental activist but her upbringing founded on principles of generosity and purpose have made her contribution to repairing the world, her calling. OzHarvest gave Ronni a force to find her voice and share her heart and now she colours the world yellow with abundant warmth, engendering joy wherever she goes. And whilst Ronni is rightfully revered for her altruistic work, she's also widely recognised for her eclectic style. Whether it's Indian cheesecloth, oversized accessories or just that happy slap of yellow, Ronni's style not only stands out but stands for her sense of purpose and repurpose.

This podcast had me in inspirational heaven from the first bite! I was honoured to have social enterprise Rockstar Ronni Kahn join me on this episode, sharing her journey from growing up in South Africa to living in a kibbutz in Israel to emigrating to Australia in 1998 Ronni and I chew the food wastage on how she made the switch from owning and operating a successful management organisation to founding OzHarvest, a social enterprise that delivers some 25 million meals per year from food that would otherwise be dumped. We share the ride, beginning with Ronni hand delivering excess food from functions to homeless shelters, to then lobbying to change civil liability and health legislation that previously prevented food donors from supplying excess food to NFP organisations. If you want a fantastic example of grit, determination, inspiration and ability to change the world then is it! Welcome to this week's Future Proof Me mini episode. For many of us the past few months have shrunk our world to the confines of our homes and our local suburb. What we've noticed can sometimes come with that, is a tendency to lose sight of the bigger picture and of others who may be doing it tougher than we are. It's why we thought it was really timely for this beautiful reminder from social entrepreneur Ronni Kahn of the value we personally derive from helping others, even now when uncertainty and disruption is still so prevalent in our own lives. We were really moved by her first hand testimony of how her experience has been that you get so much more than you give, and that time is so precious we all need to think about what we're doing now, not putting things off for “one day” in future. This point was brought vividly home to us as we just heard the news that one of our recent guests, artist and muralist Taylor White has been injured in a serious road accident in Iceland. Fortunately she's confident of making a full, if slow, recovery so we're sending her love and heartfelt “Get well soon Taylor” wishes. Seize the day dear friends. You do what Ronni has always done – reimagine the way of working, motivate the team around you, inject endless energy and determination and turn the model on its head. During COVID OzHarvest has transformed itself into a business-to-consumer model, buying food for the first time, and supporting a broad base of disadvantaged people by delivering 52 million meals in the last 18 months. Did you know that one third of all the food produced in the world is lost or wasted? That is 1.3 billion tonnes of food costing the global economy around $940 billion every year. This is crazy, right? Especially when 11% of the global population does not have enough to eat.Today I’ll chat about food waste, what the major causes of it are and what is being done about it. There is some innovative and effective action in this space, especially from charities like OzHarvest. I’ll also talk about what each of us can do to reduce food waste in our own households. The world has traditionally relied heavily on the 'business as usual model' of industrial food production and supermarket-oriented consumption. However, this system is not sustainable if we’re to secure a healthy future for people and the planet. According to the UN Environment Program, if food waste were a country it would be counted as the third biggest greenhouse gas emitter, behind China and the US. In Australia, over 5 million tonnes of food ends up in landfill. That's enough to fill 9,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools. So if Australians want to start making a difference, we can look in our own fridges and cupboards to make a real difference. Ronni Kahn, CEO and founder of Oz Harvest explains why food waste is such an issue in Australia (and the world) and Jessica Chapnik Kahn, the author of a new picture book, Lenny and the Ants, tells us why children can really help to make a difference.

Design Your Life podcast Episode 005 with Ronni Kahn Ronni Kahn is a truly inspiring and resilient woman. Her fight against our global food waste “epidemic” is relentless. She founded the ground breaking food rescue charity OzHarvest in 2004, opened Australia's first ‘rescued food' supermarket in 2017, and became the focus of a feature-length documentary film titled Food Fighter earlier this year. Through her work Kahn has helped nourish millions of vulnerable people, changed food donation laws, and has been an official partner of the United Nations Environment since 2013. In this episode you'll discover what inspired her, at the age of 52, to take on the world's mammoth food waste problem, where her sense of purpose comes from and how her experiences of growing up in South Africa followed by Israel in the 80s have helped shape her into the person she is today. This month’s podcast is all about generosity—something our friend Ronni Kahn knows a lot about. Ronni founded OzHarvest—Australia’s leading food rescue organisation—driven by a passion to make a difference and stop good food going to waste. Along the way, she’s changed lives, changed the law (to make it safe for companies to donate surplus food) and opened Australia's first free supermarket. Chatting with Dr. Monty Badami for a live event run by our friends at the School of Life, Ronni tells us about her personal journey and offers advice on how we can open our hearts and be more generous in our daily lives. We’d like to say she’s inspiring, but it’s just not a good enough word. Show notes: You can read more about Ronni in our conversation with her from Issue 53 of Dumbo Feather—The Future of Power issue. You can also find out more information about OzHarvest on their site: https://www.ozharvest.org This conversation was produced by our digital editor Lizzie Marton, and the music you hear is by Dennis Liu. CEO & founder of OzHarvest and social entrepreneur Ronni Kahn talks about how an experience in the South African shanty township of Soweto inspired her to bring massive change to people's attitudes to food and food wastage in Australia. Ronni chats about setting up a for-purpose organisation (a term Ronni prefers over not-for-profit), OzHarvest's initiatives to reduce poverty, as well as her vision for the future of food in Australia.
If there's something that makes Ronni Kahn's blood boil, it's seeing good food thrown on the scrap heap. Ronni is the foodie Robin Hood — she rescues tasty treats bound for the bin and gives them to the hungry. The "queen of leftovers" has had to move mountains to get politicians and business owners to agree to stop wasting perfectly edible food. And it's been worth the effort — Ronni has saved 80 million meals!

This week on The CMO Show, hosts Mark and JV are joined by dynamic duo Ronni Kahn, CEO and founder of OzHarvest, and Vince Frost, CEO and founder of the Frost* Collective. Recounting the rise of OzHarvest as Australia's first food rescue organisation, Kahn delves into the details of her social entrepreneurialism, demonstrating the power of meaningful storytelling and the importance of design in brand reinvention – the latter leading to the business "marriage" of Kahn and Frost that's lasted four years and is still going strong. "The turning point for OzHarvest was having Vince help us with our brand, look, collateral, and design because it took us stratospherically from where we were to where we are today," Kahn said. With 25 years experience and a wealth of expertise in design thinking, Frost understands the power behind his art form. "Design has so much power today and people recognise that power more than ever before," he said. "It's all about ideas. OzHarvest is an idea. How strong is that idea? The idea is phenomenally strong. I think that's the key thing. It's working out what's... what's the unique point of difference."
