In 2024, the University of New South Wales (UNSW) held a panel discussion on Degrowth as part of their Centre for Ideas series. The panellists were Tommy Wiedmann (Professor of Sustainability Research), Bronwen Morgan (Professor of Law and member of NENA), and Sabrina Chakori (CSIRO researcher). The discussion was hosted by former Deputy Lord Mayor and author of Glimpses of Utopia, Jess Scully. The panel explored sustainability and the urgent challenge of ensuring human needs are met without compromising a sustainable and inclusive future. With the kind permission of UNSW Centre for Ideas, the recording of this panel discussion is now available to listen to on the Post-Growth Australia Podcast (PGAP). Tommy Wiedmann has been a supporter of PGAP since our early days in 2021, so it was great to hear him in his element, sharing his research, knowledge, and ideas on Degrowth. We really appreciate Tommy and panel host Jess Scully giving PGAP a shout-out towards the end of the talk. We hope to return the favour by sharing this insightful discussion, which serves as an excellent introduction to Degrowth for those new to the topic. It is encouraging to see Degrowth becoming an openly discussed subject in Australian universities. Tommy also wrote a very encouraging review for PGAP on Apple Podcast (https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/post-growth-australia-podcast/id1522194099). We warmly invite you to add your review. This will help to broaden our outreach and encourage new listeners. Please also feel welcome to contact us (https://pgap.fireside.fm/contact) with your feedback or suggestions for future episode topics. Co-hosts Mark Allen (https://holisticactivism.net/) and Michael Bayliss (https://michaelbayliss.org/)share their thoughts on the panel discussion in the introduction and conclusion. For the most part, we align with the perspectives of the four panellists, but we also provide additional thoughts on how the Degrowth movement can incorporate concerns around population, which we briefly touch on in our commentary. For a more in-depth analysis, we encourage you to read the PGAP blog: “To populate or not to populate? How we can come together around the eternal debate of everyone's favourite vexed issue. (https://pgap.fireside.fm/articles/population)” We also encourage listening to two recent PGAP episodes on population, including Anne Poelina (https://pgap.fireside.fm/annepoelinapatron), who brings a First Nations' perspective to the debate, and Isaac Kabongo (https://pgap.fireside.fm/isaaceco), who brings a Ugandan/Global South perspective. Regarding the discussion on population, Tommy cited two particularly relevant scientific articles, which are well worth reading: Lamb, W. F., Wiedmann, T., Pongratz, J., Andrew, R., Crippa, M., Olivier, J. G. J., Wiedenhofer, D., Mattioli, G., Khourdajie, A. This week we're revisiting some of the spirit and empowered thinking that emerged from the chaos of 2020, with a conversation we had at the time with the deputy lord mayor of Sydney, Jess Scully. Jess is an extraordinary young councillor who is helping bring more voices to the political table, while creating pathways to reclaim public spaces, address housing problems, and enable more resilient and connected cities and communities. Jess is also an arts curator and writer, a passionate advocate for the role of creativity in our lives. At the time we caught up with her, she had just released her first book, Glimpses of Utopia: Real Ideas for a Fairer World. It's a wonderful conversation that spans her experiences in politics, advocating for more participatory forms of democracy, her vision for our cities, as well as what was coming for her at the time as young mum four months into the pandemic. Jess is chatting with our programming manager at Small Giants Academy, Eleanor Gammell.

Episode 5 of The Grimshaw Podcast ‘The City Series' features Deputy Lord Mayor of Sydney, Jess Scully. Hosted by Grimshaw's Cities Initiative Lead, Dr. Tim Williams, Episode 5 explores Jess's motivation to move Australia from an extraction economy to a knowledge and creative economy, and her senior leadership role in Australia's largest city during a time of crisis.Prior to entering politics, Jess was a curator of Sydney's VIVID Festival which rapidly became the most important event in the winter calendar with its associated program of cultural and thought leadership talks which explored the context of Sydney's urban situation. So, who better to be elected in 2019 as Deputy Lord Mayor of the City of Sydney?Having changed the face of civic politics by advocating for and empowering those who were previously not involved, encouraging them to have a say and to participate in the life of their city, Jess is connecting people with creativity, and preparing communities to take advantage of opportunities. Jess focuses on several key issues in the community including the revitalisation and growth of Sydney's night-time economy, exploring new models to address the housing crisis, nurturing a transition to the workforces and workplaces of the future, and protecting our digital rights in the public realm.Committed to opening up local politics to younger and diverse individuals to expand who plays a role in shaping the life of the city, Jess is also an author of Glimpses of Utopia which dissects how society is rising up to confront our challenges in the world with creativity, resilience and compassion and how harnessing technology and imagination can reshape our world to be fair and sustainable.Join Tim and Jess for a critical conversation on the future of Sydney's creative industries and what this means for Sydney's CBD in the context of a pandemic. “All that matters is talent. Talent wins.” Ed Michaels, a Director of McKinsey & Company (2018) who first coined the ‘War For Talent’ rubric in 2008 Across the globe and across all industries, a company’s success is predicated on how well they attract, engage, retain and develop their human ‘talent’. If you want to win big in the war for talent, you need to understand how dramatically the landscape has changed, and what your workers want. Business owners and leaders fear losing their workers to competitors, or to the lure of self-employment. On the flip side, most workers (85% according to Gallup’s 2017 State of the Global Workplace report) are disengaged and dissatisfied with their jobs. What they need is a better match up – the right person for the job, and the right environment within which they can thrive. To help us understand how to utilise recruiting strategies and cultural engagement propositions to appeal to an increasingly complex and diverse talent ecosystem, we have assembled a panel of experts: Esther Clerehan is THE go-to recruiter for the creative industry, having worked with some of the world’s biggest agencies and the industry’s brightest minds. She is a dedicated mentor and coach (2018 Mentor of the Year, B&T Women in Media Awards), and knows how to achieve a winning match between talent and workplace; Shane Currey is Leader of Employee Experience within Deloitte’s Human Capital practice and TED speaker on unleashing creativity in corporations. He works with clients to co-create a complete workplace experience that unites workers and engages them in work that is productive, motivating and enjoyable; Kate Messenger is Director of Meme Partners, a specialist consultancy, engaging employees to put more into and get more out of their work. In our post-truth era credible and measured public discourse has given way to emotive rhetoric, opinionated half-truths, and downright lies. With the advent of social media our democratic privilege to freedom of speech has metastasised out of control. What is the true and right is hard to parse when even “truth isn’t truth”, as infamously retorted by Rudy Giuliani when questioned about the Russia investigation on NBC’s “Meet the Press” (Aug. 19, 2018). To discuss the erosion of truth throughout institutions, politics, media and every level of society we have assembled an expert panel: Kate McClymont is a leading investigative journalist in Australia, having spent 3 decades unearthing scandal, corruption and fraud from the seedy underbelly to the highest levels of government; Reverend Toby Neal is an ordained Anglican Minister and weaves together pop culture, philosophy, anthropology, and the arts to speak to share Biblical truths; Professor Nick Enfield is a Professor of Linguistics at the University of Sydney and Head of ‘The Sydney Initiative for Truth’ (SIFT).
