"Wow, 2021 sure outdid 2020 didn't it?" *Another year later "Wow, 2022 sure outdid 2021 didn't it?" We can let the year rule us, or we can rule the year. It's about what you choose to do. And I've talked about it plenty, how time and what you choose to do with it is everything. But it's not something people take very seriously. We're a species that has overcome magnificent odds to get to where we are today. From the ages of early man to modern man, we relied solely on ourselves and our tribes to acquire and survive on our needs. But have you ever wondered why our lives went from simply satisfying our needs, to working so hard for our wants? On this week's episode we'll cover just how far we've deviated from the path of hunter-gatherer mindset, to the mindset of living that Gucci lifestyle the uber-rich live everyday. Prepare for some history, but of course, some lessons in how understanding finance and our own capabilities to provide for ourselves could mean an earlier retirement for us. If you say yes to any of those questions, then this episode will shed light on how you or someone else may be eligible for a class-action lawsuit against- No, I'm just kidding. This episode is about teaching your kids about finance at different ages. How do you involve them in financial decisions that won't overwhelm them, or invest in their future? No, we're not leaving you behind! No matter where you are in your life, what you face, there's a way to make things work. And this applies to retirement, as well. So, let's talk about some different examples of where one might be, and regardless of how hard it will be, you can still retire. 25 years old without any savings? Let's make it happen cap'n. 35 and only invest 3% of your income for the last 10 years? Chet-u-betcha we'll get you on track. 65 without a dime saved? Well, let's have a hard talk. Living with early retirement in mind, or living to want less, or living frugally, isn't just a part of anyone from birth. There are many concepts that need to be understood. So what led me to understanding this lifestyle and becoming a part of it? Why am I pursuing it today? That's what we'll discuss this week. Apologies for missing an episode last week. Our daughter brought back a cold to share, so we were all quite wiped out and I made the ill-fated mistake of not pre-recording something before heading out on our camping trip. For all the people who aren't vacationing in Rome, there's plenty that lives by "when in Rome" on any trip. Who said you NEED to spend a ton of money just because you're on vacation? Of course, tourism marketing will tell you that. But why should you listen? We vacation a few times a year. Often it's by camping, which is by far the cheapest way to vacation. But even when we're not camping we still manage to save as much as possible on our travel so we can put more money toward an early retirement. Listen on for what areas you can trim down costs, but still get that much-needed reset. Follow Frugal Noodle wherever you wish! The music for this episode was produced by CARBS. Wanting to retire early begets a frugal lifestyle. A frugal lifestyle begets a smaller environmental footprint. And thus, the FIRE movement is actually better for the environment. It means, buying less of the things you don't need, wasting less by wearing purchases out, and appreciating simpler things like nature, because it is a much more affordable experience over lavish cruises and the like. This week's episode is a bit philosophical and is subjective of my own opinions. But, in this world, it's difficult to debate whether we should do the best for our planet, or not. Hint, we should. So, fasten in, and prepare yourself for a greener future, both financially and environmentally. Follow Frugal Noodle wherever you wish! The music for this episode was produced by CARBS. What can't you subscribe to nowadays? From entertainment to food, video games to cars. I shiver in fear of the future where no one owns anything, but rather pays for temporary access to the things we want and need. This week's episode doesn't necessarily discuss the social issues that subscriptions pose, so much as it discusses the financial aspect of our increasingly subscription-wired minds. Let's talk about how there are many more subscriptions than those that call themselves a "subscription." Anything can be budgeted as a subscription if you do the right math. And through viewing our regular purchases in this light, it is much easier to understand how much we really spend on certain areas of our budgets. Follow the Frugal Noodle wherever you please! You're making just enough to get by one year, then the next year you can afford a nicer apartment and car, as well as some other goodies you couldn't before. But, should we be asking ourselves how we can afford more things? Or, how we can live with less? This episode will cover the financial independence seeker's bane, lifestyle inflation. You make more, so you should be able to afford more, right? Technically, yes. But if you want to retire early and enjoy your time more than your things then maybe the answer should be no. We, human creatures, are easily convinced by the flow of the crowd around us (most of the time). But one thing that the majority of us hardly question is if we should really be living in debt for the bulk of our lives just as most of our fellow human creatures are. And what makes it even harder to question the notion is when some debts are categorized as "good". On the path to early retirement and financial independence, the question of taking on debt will come up often, especially earlier on. But, I think a shift in perspective on what debt really is makes the decision to take on more an easier one to make. Follow the show wherever you wish! It's easy to get caught up in any mindset or lifestyle and neglect to enjoy the scenery, smell the roses, or appreciate the moment. I would wager that it's even easier to watch the time fly by when living a goal-oriented life like the FIRE movement. However, it doesn't have to be that way. There are more people that live in debt for the majority of their lives than not. It's astonishing to lead the lifestyle that's been so baked into us without stopping to consider that maybe there's another way. Do you need to have a car payment until the day you retire? I am a fan of many things: food, like salami, flowers, like roses, and historical figures, like Joe Louis, to name a few oddly specific things. And this week’s guest happens to fit the bill on those things while she produces some No-Grav Space Jazz as I call it, or Relaxing Bagel Making Music as she calls it. My guest this week is Salami Rose Joe Louis (Lindsay Olsen). We dig into her music, of course, and talk about her past endeavours as a scientist. Her latest album, Chapters of Zdenka, was released in December, and it follows up her previous releases excellently keeping to the lush sound she’s known for. There’s a groupie in all of us. And that groupie dreams of the day they can have a conversation with their favorite artists. Well, this groupie just had that opportunity with this week’s guest. Honus Honus (Ryan Kattner) of the band Man Man has been a pianist, singer, and writer of music that I’ve been in love with since about 2008. I’ve been fortunate enough to witness the live show five times now and can promise you this: even if you feel the music isn’t your most favorite thing in the world, you’re going to have THE best time. We cover a whole lot, from influence to band name ownership, infomercials about walking, and a love song for Ma Anand Sheela from the documentary Wild Wild Country. Those last two subjects come out of Man Man’s latest album Dream Hunting in the Valley of the In-Between, a culmination of where Honus Honus’ career has led him to today. Video games have been a defining influence on me since I was old enough to twiddle my thumbs (really about four years old). The stories, the art, the music, it all comes together for some of the fondest memories. But as games and the development of them has become more accessible to indie developers, they also have broken away from catering to as broad of an audience as they can. My guest this week happens to be one of those indie game designers who marries the subject with his life involved in music.Cosmo D (Greg Heffernan), has brought a universe to life that can easily be filed under "Offbeat." His world set in a city named Off-Peak is layers of characters who's narrative ranges from troubled to devious, atop jazz and electronic composed by Cosmo D himself. Enter a semi-open world of problems to solve, dystopian corporations, decisions to make, pizzas to bake, and outlandish characters all designed to cause some level of discomfort. With Saturn V, Off-Peak, The Norwood Suite, and Tales from Off-Peak City Vol 1, there are four titles to enjoy, with Off-Peak being free in the Steam store. We'll cover some of the processes behind developing his games in Unity, what could've been in Unreal, and where he's planning on taking the player in his work-in-progress fifth entry. We also talk about his time spent in music as a classically trained cellist and being an instructor for game development at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts. I have always had a love for street art, and it started in high school. This boy who grew up in the country loved the culture behind the form of expression in the city. Or at least the culture as I understood it.This week's guest is someone I discovered back in those high school days when I was turning garage sale stickers into pictures and phrases and slapping them in the boy's locker room at school. Justin Pape was known as We Kill You (WKY) when I discovered him. His street art was incredibly simple, featuring a black sharp toothed mouth and round eyes on a white background. It was the minimal look that attracted me at the time. And upon rediscovering him, I found that he'd taken his art to professional heights. We talk about his early days getting into art, from making skateboard decks, to wheat pasting his WKY art throughout Toronto, Ontario. His time spent designing art for the hotel industry, marketing pieces for Indigo Books, sculptures for galleries, and record sleeves for musicians. I trust you guys. Enough to present to you, Emily Buchanan, my wife. The owner and artist of Ebb & Flo Studio, where she paints exquisite portraits of people's pets and sells prints of some of her more- unique pieces (did somebody say, ogre?). From Shrek to Furby, to your cat in 1920s speakeasy clothing with a raunchy story behind it, Emily paints it all. We talk about the challenges of social media, calling a project complete, and how parenting can be the ultimate motivator to put your nose to the grindstone to chase a dream down, wrangle it by its ankles and hogtie it with whatever length of rope you can find at the time. We were drinking El Pensador, a Tempranillo from Campo de Borgo, Spain. I give it a 3.5 for a juicy fruity approach to $9 when we bought it. The no-nose review (Emily) gives it a 3 for being cheap and delicious at the time but leaving her with a headache the next day (she's a lightweight so don't take that to heart). For this week's episode, you're going to want to either strap in for interplanetary travel or strap on your dancing shoes, because this duo from Mexico City is producing music that is out of this world and easy to get down to (just ask my daughter). Pammela Rojos and Rafael Marfil have been producing music of many genres together for a long time under various names. Shiro Schwarz, however, is one that joins a lot of that previous influence to create some that is as funky as it is poetic. We talk about what goes into their music, where their music has brought them, grabbing breakfast with Nicolas Jaar, and what advice they have for aspiring creators. In today's episode, we talk with Joseph Hood, the indie horror author whose debut from 2019 has pushed him to pursue his career as a writer even harder and tackle his second novel which is set to release October 30th of this year. Even if you're not a fan of horror, his writing might still be up your alley. With a plot that is driven by its characters, My Friend Nick feels more on the spectrum of a thriller novel than true horror.I feel that Joseph's work is certainly worth the attention and you should order My Friend Nick before his second book, Bride of Warren releases next month. He's an author that understands the human experience from each of his character's perspectives, and I am excited to watch his list of titles and talent grow. That's right, an extra bonus episode to kick off Nonethelesser right on its launch week.My interview with Ted Feighan (Monster Rally) was a great discussion, and we talked a little about his latest album Castaways Volume 1. But now that I have it in my hands, I think it deserved its own little bonus breakdown.I'll walk you through the beauty of this gatefold and the music inside.Jump on in, 'cause the water's fine! This bonus episode is a follow up to our first interview which features Monster Rally (Ted Feighan).I did some digging into the history of the Exotica genre, which definitely has a lot more to be understood than what I discuss here.Be sure to listen to my interview with Monster Rally, which inspired this research.Follow Nonethelesser on InstagramFollow Monster Rally on InstagramThe theme in this episode was produced by Cro_ftExotica on WikipediaUS history during the 1950s
This, the first episode of Nonethelesser, features my interview with Ted Feighan, the man behind Tropicalia Hip-Hop instrumentalist, Monster Rally. We talk about his business he operates with his wife, Valley Cruise Press, as well as some of his work under the alias, Shah Marg.I've been a huge fan of Monster Rally since late 2018, and even my Spotify reminds me of it when he made my most-listened-to artist of 2019. His sound is extremely easy to get into, but unique from the lo-fi hip-hop scene that, at times, feels a bit overcrowded.
