In this episode of the Compendium, we uncover how the Sex Cult led by Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, also known as the Osho movement, nearly took over Antelope, Oregon. We explore the rise of Rajneeshpuram, the Rajneeshee cult's transformation, and Ma Anand Sheela's pivotal role in the Rajneeshee plot that led to the biggest bioterror attack in U.S. history. We give you the Compendium, but if you want more, then check out these great resources:“Wild Wild Country” (2018) - Documentary series on Netflix:“Searching for Sheela” (2021) - Follow-up documentary on Netflix:“Building Utopia” - Podcast by Russell King:“What it was like to be a child in the commune” - Article in The Guardian“A journalist's recent experience at an Osho retreat” - Article in The GuardianMessage Kyle and AdamConnect with Us:
It might be very provoking for you to read! What is enlightenment? When a guy is getting enlightenment, his ego will be destroyed and be transformed to the divine. Afterward, his whole life will emerge in the divine, everything would be selfless, and he would have no Ego anymore! In the last months of his life, Osho (Bhagwan) finally admitted that: The Ego could not be destroyed, only "observed."Krishnamurthy said simple, there is no enlightenment.Sri Aurobindo said until we have a body, we have an Ego. The Srimad Bhagavatam said, there exist nobody on this planet, who doesn't have all three Gunas. All three Gunas are an ego, we can only improve our ego.And there is nothing mentioned on the enlightenment in the Srimad Bhagavatam or other old religion books, for instance, the famous Sufi book: The conference of the birds. Ramakrishna said we can't kill this rascal of Ego. Instead, we use our Ego to serve God. Ramakrishna remained his whole life humble and said about himself, that he is only the servant of the servants of God. That means Ramakrishna served his devotees and his devotees should serve God.Why we can't destroy our Ego or a part of our Ego? Because our ego is so hard-wired into our brain and our whole body. For instance, if we speak, we use our ego, without ego, we can't talk. We can not guarantee to survive without Ego. We can free us from our ego and connect with the divine for a particular time.- With Meditation, dancing, music, chanting is this possible. Through the spiritual path, we can lose a part of our attachments to our ego. We can't get rid of all of our attachments! This means we all have to monitor and improve our ego our whole life, and that forget these so called enlightenment people, avatars. They become arrogant and ignorant of their ego, greedy and fall from their spirituality. The next lie is to transform our sexual drive. Our brain is mainly focused on procreation because nature needs children. What is if we live in celibacy? Then we suppress our sex drive with our mind. What we suppress that will grow. After some time, our suppressed sex can cause diseases, can get perverted or simply explode in craving of sex. I by myself could live easy in Celibacy for 10 years because I raised up my energy from my sex center!!! When I had an accident, my back could not heal, because of my suppressed sex. And then I have healed my back with my sex energy (Chi Gong, Mantak Chia). All these great famous Gurus at least from the last 200 years have exploited and cheated the mass, not so the unknown Gurus, like Ramakrishna, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan… The great famous Gurus, Saints are making a beautiful holy show, and the insider will tell you how unholy and selfish they are! (see the books reference about the famous Gurus, written from their dearest devotees, at the end). The spiritual enlightenment was a great marketing idea to exploit and cheat the people. The Zen masters even sold enlightenment certificates!Nevertheless, the Enlightenment trip was necessary to motivate, to meditate and go further. The so-called enlightenment Gurus and seriously devotees are getting over the inner path the divine inner voice. With this inner voice, they get all the information that is necessary for their specific inner path. Also, they have to obey to 100% to the divine inner voice. If they follow up, they will grow continuously on the inner path. If not, they will become evil people and will exploit others... I by myself had the fortune to get the Kundalini/spiritual-awakening very fast, with 29 years. Since this time, I have lost my body identification (still, I keep my body healthy) got my divine inner voice and many other spiritual goodies. I have obeyed to 100% my divine inner voice. Sometimes it was/is so difficult to follow my divine inner voice, because I have to do things that are contradicting my thinking/faith system. Nevertheless, my life got better and better. For me is it so easy to get blissfully. And I can teach you that!
Step inside the twisted world of the Rajneeshpuram cult with our latest episode, where an enigmatic Indian guru's quest for utopia leads to a scandalous slice of Oregon's history. We spotlight the tumultuous rise and fall of the Rajneeshpuram commune, starting from their head-scratching financial prowess in acquiring a vast ranch, to their audacious attempts at sculpting a city of their own. Our conversation isn't just a history lesson; it's a deep dive into a community's struggle with an ambitious cult's explosive impact, where salad bars became vectors for bioterrorism, and small-town America clashed with an influx of red-clad devotees. As we thread through the intricate legal battles that the Rajneeshpuram faced, we dissect the blurred lines between church, state, and the ownership of sacred space. The narrative gets personal as the residents of Antelope, Oregon, stand their ground against the commune's expansion, making their town a symbol of the broader conflict. We don't shy away from the darker side either, revealing how a utopian dream distorted into a narrative of crime, eventually branding the group with terrorist undertones. Our exploration goes beyond the headlines, correcting historical inaccuracies and examining the legal repercussions for the commune's most prominent figures, like Ma Anand Sheela. In our final musings, we reflect on the Rajneesh legacy, pondering the transformation of their ranch and mulling over the philosophical echoes of Rajneesh's "ten commandments." Our hosts grapple with defining the group—cult, criminal organization, or a misunderstood community? We also step into the wider realm of cults and terrorist organizations, humorously comparing their evolution to stages of Pokémon, while engaging in rigorous debate about international law, extradition, and the enigmatic Edward Snowden. Join us on this historical rollercoaster, and you might just find that the line between cult and terrorist is finer than you think.Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! So hop into your Rolls Royce, grab your erotic goodie bag, move to the rural Pacific Northwest, and dodge any flying knives along the way… because we're goin' in. THE GOODS How Osho's energy type and profile affected how he rose to influence over hundreds of thousands of people The astrological house that held HUGE influence over his career, success, and life trajectory overall Why he was so good at persuading, convincing, and attracting followers, and why people went so fucking bananas over him The astrocartography of his move from India to Oregon - how this changed the way his astro birth chart expressed itself Osho's chart synastry with Ma Anand Sheela, his secretary and confidant/co-conspirator/best fiend (and also, fellow projector). ON JUNE 1, 1981, Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh boarded a Boeing 747 for a flight from Mumbai to New York City. Officially the trip was for medical treatment, and authorities were told he'd be heading back home to India afterward. But Rajneesh was not planning on returning. His movement, which had already become an international octopus with meditation centers in dozens of different countries around the world, had outgrown the Pune campus. He needed a new World Headquarters. And his new personal secretary, Ma Anand Sheela (formerly known as Sheela Patel Silverman), had found one for him. Sheela closed the deal for the property then known as the Big Muddy Ranch the following month, paying $5.75 million for it. It was 64,229 acres of Central Oregon rangeland with only the amenities one would expect a family ranch to have. And in late August, she chartered a Learjet to fly the guru in to see, for the first time, the dry landscape that was to be his new home. The Bhagwan's assistant, Ma Anand Sheela, set the tone for the commune's relations with the rest of Oregon — and that tone was not a friendly one. Soon the “Rajneeshies” were planning a political takeover ... (Antelope, Wasco County; 1980s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/H1005c_Bhagwan2of4.htm)
This episode is one of the most unique episodes of Beyond Mirage. In this episode, Ma Anand Sheela, who was the spokesperson of the Rajneesh movement, talks about her journey and how she developed a courageous and fearless personality. She also talks about Bhagwan's teaching, how did the day in Ashram look like, the real and subtle meaning around the sexual activity and the true meaning of love. I hope you guys enjoy this episode.
This is Dragon Lady, the last witness, the sequel series of "Soli" by Roberta Lippi. Her name was Deeksha, and she was one of the women of power in Osho's entourage, the famous Indian guru, and one of the few disciples to have direct access to the teacher.Deeksha was somewhat of a living legend in the ashram because many considered her to be a true tyrant. Osho often spoke of her as an exemplary figure, calling her Zen Master or Dragon Master, and still today the Sannyasins remember her this way. even if she has long since disappeared from the scene.Deeksha arrived in the United States and was destined to take over Rajneeshpuram together with Ma Anand Sheela, but suddenly decided to leave the commune. The reasons that prompted her to leave have remained secret for over 40 years. Today she has decided to talk and reveal everything about the community and the guru.
Welcome to our 2-parter episode on Ma Anand Sheela! A woman we all know very very well at this point, thanks to the Netflix documentary Wild Wild Country.Sheela was the former secretary and personal assistant of the Indian spiritual leader Rajneesh. Rajneesh, also called Osho, was a very popular leader who rallied almost 15,000 followers at the height of his influence. Sheela, as his right-hand woman, moved Rajneesh's commune from a small Ashram in Pune to a massive ranch in a small rural town in Oregon. The commune, which was known for its alternative ways of life, did not appeal to the local population, who felt they were taking over. And soon the American media and law enforcement also joined them in this understanding.Sheela, who was the sole spokeswoman for Rajneeshpuram, which was the name of the city -- Osho had taken an unofficial vow of silence around this time, and rarely ever made public appearances. So, Sheela was the public face of it all, and took all this pushback against the Rajneeshpuram commune very personally. So personally in fact, that she attempted to influence the local county elections, and get Rajneeshpuram more power at the state level, essentially committing voter fraud. And when that wasn't successful, she decided to poison a bunch of voters with salmonella bacteria, incapacitating almost 750 people in the country. And when that wasn't successful she attempted to assassinate the attorney general that was prosecuting her case. And when that wasn't successful… oh actually I think that's the entire list. For now.She does eventually go to prison for her outstanding work in the field of poisonings and contract killings. And then she gets out and makes hella money from the experience. So we are going to spend some time understanding WHO Sheela was. We have many many primary sources for this 2-parter episode, and we hope it does some justice to who Sheela was as a person!
BUCKLE UP EVERYONE, GILLIAN IS REAL MAD THIS WEEK! So, Ok, remember Ma Anand Sheela from “Wild Wild Country?” She was Bagwan's number 2, bus we all knew she was really the one running things in the Rajneesh Cult. WELL GUESS WHAT, SHE'S GETTING HER OWN DOCUMENTARY! After 35 years, she's headed back to India to promote her book. But she really doesn't want to talk about the book or answer any questions AND GILLIAN IS NOT HERE FOR IT. Ugh, this is a doozy. FAM OUR LIVE SHOW IN BOSTON IS BACK ON AND TICKETS ARE NOW ON SALE!! Searching for Sheela, a new Netflix documentary about Osho's controversial former aide Ma Anand Sheela, is a sanitised puff piece pretending to be a serious profile. We discuss the superficial, slapdash filmmaking, the tone-deaf treatment of serious themes, and the curious lack of a director in what is a Karan Johar production. Today Adare explains and discusses diagnoses for the leaders of rajneeshpuram Osho and Ma Anand Sheela
There’s a groupie in all of us. And that groupie dreams of the day they can have a conversation with their favorite artists. Well, this groupie just had that opportunity with this week’s guest. Honus Honus (Ryan Kattner) of the band Man Man has been a pianist, singer, and writer of music that I’ve been in love with since about 2008. I’ve been fortunate enough to witness the live show five times now and can promise you this: even if you feel the music isn’t your most favorite thing in the world, you’re going to have THE best time. We cover a whole lot, from influence to band name ownership, infomercials about walking, and a love song for Ma Anand Sheela from the documentary Wild Wild Country. Those last two subjects come out of Man Man’s latest album Dream Hunting in the Valley of the In-Between, a culmination of where Honus Honus’ career has led him to today. So come on in for this show that I’ve been anticipating for months now. You’re lucky I’m willing to share! Nadège Nguyen is an actress and presenter of the Threads Radio Show.I'd never met her before we met to record this episode. A friend of a friend of friends, I'd seen an Instagram post she'd made about her struggles with mental wellbeing and was really impressed by her raw, unfiltered courage and willingness to break the societal taboos that routinely keep people silent and ashamed when they reach breaking point. What unfolded was a really energetic two hour Saturday morning conversation that could have gone on all day. I'm uploading it here in its unedited form. A big part of the inspiration for creating this podcast was the awareness that as a therapist my reach is limited by the very essence of what I do - confidentiality. By choosing people who are willing to record and publish their stories and struggles it's my feeling that if just one listener is inspired or encouraged to speak out or make a change then it's all been worth it.This episode with Nadège tiptoes the line between podcast and therapy session in the most intimate way, exploring her mental break-through, multi generational family trauma and our different and similar relationship patterns, and whilst the Robert Crumb and Ma Anand Sheela episodes may appeal to a broader audience, to me this one is much more profound.Title track composed by Jerry Hyde and Nick Van Gelder, produced by Nick Van Gelder, keyboards by Kenny Dickenson, brass by Noel Langley, vocals by Sian O'Gorman.
Ma Anand Sheela was the spokeswoman of the Rajneesh movement (aka Osho movement) and star of the Netflix series Wild Wild Country. In 1986, she pleaded guilty to attempted murder and assault for her role in the 1984 Rajneeshee bioterror attack. As the personal secretary of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh from 1981 through 1985, she managed the Rajneeshpuram ashram in Oregon. In 1986, she pleaded guilty to attempted murder and assault for her role in the 1984 Rajneeshee bioterror attack. She was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison and served 39 months.Sheela now lives in Switzerland where she manages a care home, and it was from here that she was kind enough to take some time out to speak to me.Books - https://www.amazon.co.ukWild Wild Country - https://www.youtube.comTitle track composed by Jerry Hyde and Nick Van Gelder, produced by Nick Van Gelder, keyboards by Kenny Dickenson, brass by Noel Langley, vocals by Sian O'Gorman.
Like a lucky horseshoe, The Dalles runs along a bend on the south side of the Columbia River. In the 80’s the sleepy little town had just a few thousand people, but was still the largest community in rural Wasco County. Fishing and farming were popular activities in this beautiful part of north central Oregon. And, once night fell, there was little more than a movie theater and a Shakey’s Pizza to keep folks entertained. One Sunday night in 1984, the owner of that pizza place was getting ready to call it a day when he suddenly doubled over in pain. Wracked with stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, Dave Lutgens would later recall it was the worst he’d ever felt in his life. His wife soon became ill as well, and the couple decided it was time to go to the hospital. What they saw there was shocking. The waiting room was full of people similarly doubled over in pain. They were lining the hallways, and there were patients in every exam room. Nurses, doctors and other hospital staff were rushing around trying to make more space as the ill continued streaming through the doors.Within the next week, nearly half of the Shakey’s 28 employees and dozens of their customers all came down with the same kinds of complaints.Dave began to worry. How did it happen? Could it have been something in the salad bar that was so popular with the Shakey’s crowd? Or maybe an employee who wasn’t diligent about their hygiene? The local health department started asking questions as well, as the number of ill continued to climb… 100 cases… then 200. And they discovered that some of the patients hadn’t eaten at Shakey’s, but at a different restaurant in town.A pathologist identified the problem as Salmonella, a common bacteria that can contaminate food. But, there was nothing common about how this outbreak was spreading. In the end more than 700 people would fall ill in less than one month. And, it wasn’t just one or two restaurants involved, but nearly a dozen all across The Dalles and the surrounding area. Most of those who fell ill reported eating at salad bars. The county ordered all salad bars shut down and they called in the C.D.C.Health investigators spoke with patients and their families, inspected restaurants and suppliers, tested the water supply and soil samples.Salmonella was found in coffee creamer at one restaurant and in the blue cheese salad dressing in another. But, the question remained: How did it get there? The C.D.C. decided it was a case of poor hygiene. Someone who didn’t wash their hands after using the bathroom must’ve touched the items on the salad bar. It seemed far fetched, given how many restaurants were involved, but they simply couldn’t see any other possible explanation. But, nearby in the tiny town of Antelope, they had a different theory. They pointed to a mysterious religious leader from India and his thousands of followers who had built a massive commune that they claimed promoted a kind of spiritual rebirth. It was hard to fathom that this mild-mannered messiah could have been behind such a violent attack. But, in the end, even the great Bhagwan himself pointed the finger at a member of his flock, his second in command and personal secretary Ma Anand Sheela. But was Sheela behind the poisonings or was it done on the Bhagwan’s orders? Why would this group of free-loving farmers, practitioners of meditation, pursuers of spiritual awakening target their small-town neighbors in what had become the largest bioterrism attack in the na...
Bhagwan's assistant, Ma Anand Sheela, set the tone for the commune's relations with the rest of Oregon — and that tone was not a friendly one. (Antelope, Wasco County; 1981) (For text and pictures, see http://www.offbeatoregon.com/H1005c_Bhagwan2of4.htm)

On the last Sunday of every month, Parcast Rewind replays a classic episode of Cults that you might have missed! Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh felt discomfort with his own mortality from a young age. Over time, his spiritual studies and beliefs about capitalism and sexuality led Rajneesh to become a charismatic cult leader. Hi all,As I bring the curtain down on season 3 of 1% Better, a season that included over 50 shows, and has been running for 11 months, I thought it would be a good idea to pull out some of clips from some of the stand out shows of the season. This wasn’t easy and in the end I practically picked them at random. I’ve decided to go for 10 clips over 2 short episodes. I hope you enjoy it. Below has a short summary of each guest/interview and a link to the full episode on the site. Thanks for support in season 3. Season 4 is already underway recording wise and deep in planning. Here are the five from today’s show1.Ma Anand Sheela episode 100Ma Anand Sheela. Sheela came to prominence recently from the Netflix documentary Wild Wild Country. That’s when I learned about her. However many of you listening might have first heard of her back in the early 1980s when she was the secretary of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, latterly known as Osho. The documentary blew my mind and I was struck by Sheela’s personality, devotion for Bhagwan, and then her own seemingly unending quest for power. When I watched the show, I thought how cool it would be to talk with her for the podcast. To learn more about her values, upbringing, what drove her motivations, and of course what life is like for her since the commune broke up and after her time in prison. When I managed to connect with her, tell her about the podcast, and invite her to be a guest, I was delighted when she agreed.Episode Link https://robofthegreen.ie/episodes/maanandsheela-freedomgoalsacceptinglife-ep100/2.Sir Steve Timothy episode 125Steve Timothy is a comedian, online sensation, soon to be Author, Rapper, Satirist, and other titles. He calls himself a chancer and professional Tom-fool. Whatever you want to call him, he’s making a mark.We connected a couple of weeks back, shortly after his sell out show in Cork, to talk about his career, struggles with anxiety, dealing with trolls, disability, love for Everton Football Club, creativity, business, Conor McGregor, and of course the character he and his partner, Sinead, are best known for, Farmer Michael and Kathleen!Episode link https://robofthegreen.ie/episodes/sirstevotimothy-ep125/3.Susan Winter – Episode 101This is the first episode I’ve done that focuses primarily on relationships and, I can safely say, Susan is a guru and thought leader in this every changing space.About Susan. She’s been a guest on Oprah, has a list of media credits that covers about every News show, magazine and paper that I’ve ever heard of, is a best-selling author (Allowing Magnificence and Older Women/Younger Men), she specializes in evolutionary forms of loving partnership and higher thinking, and is in high demand. She’s just had over 10 millions view on YouTube where she posts short informative videos on relationship challenges and how to improve in your loving partnerships.During the hour, we talk about everything on relationships from online dating, cultural challenges, and new terms like Bread Crumbing, Catfishing, and of course Ghosting! I’ve shared links to Susan site, and social platforms at the bottom of these notes.I really enjoyed this one as you’ll probably detect from it and I learned a lot. I’m sure you’ll take something from it too that will make your relationships more than 1% Better. Susan and I connected a few months back and I was delighted when she agreed to be a guest on the show to talk about her career, overcoming fears, ‘coming out’ as Siri, the great fortune that has ultimately brought and how life has changed since.Susan shares her story and provides lots of bits of advice from lessons learned over the last few decades from her successful acting, voiceover, and musical career.Episode link: https://robofthegreen.ie/episodes/susanbennett-voiceofsiri-ep107/So there you go….5 very interesting interviews, 5 different subjects, and lots of 1% Better insights and actions you could take onboard I hope.As always, thanks for listening. It follows the path of Delusional Spiritual Leader Bhagwhan Shree Rajneesh, His psychotic assistant Ma Anand Sheela, and the crazy kundalini cult he took from an Ashram in India to the small town of Antelope, Oregon. We brought in two true crime fans to break down their favorite docuseries of 2018. Shane Madej and Ryan Bergara, co-hosts of BuzzFeed’s Unsolved, talk about the most memorable characters, scenes, and plot twists of Evil Genius, Making A Murderer Part Two, and The Staircase. After that, we get a phone call from Ma Anand Sheela. We met Sheela earlier this year in the hit docuseries, Wild Wild Country. Sheela fills us in on her relationship with the series, her family’s reaction, how she feels about Rajneeshpuram and more.

@exroommates | exroommatespodcast@gmail.comWe're back with another cult episode! This one takes us to India and then somehow landing us in Oregon. The Rajneesh Movement is most known for poising 700+ people with salmonella. AND their leader, Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, holds the record for owning the most Rolls Royce vehicles. You don't want to miss this one!
Recently, Netflix produced a documentary that told the little-remembered story of a cult and its misadventures in creating a city in the Pacific Northwest. The documentary, called Wild Wild Country, follows the expoits, controversies, and crimes of the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and his Rajneeshi cult as they create a city in the wilderness outside Antelope, Oregon. Led by the Bhagwan's chief lieutenant, Ma Anand Sheela, the group created a remarkable city from scratch, but fell into conflict with the local community, leading to a series of events which culminated in several major crimes. Joining Danny for this episode is first-time contributor Christopher Pipkin of Emmanuel College, and Todd Pedlar of Luther College and the Book of Nature Podcast. Pedlar also happens to have lived near the Rajneesh community during the controversy and brings a personal reflection to the discussion about cultural and religious bigotry, the marriage between religion and capitalism, and the power of cults.
As Bhagwan's dreams for the future continued to blossom, outside pressures, like the Indian government, threatened to squeeze the life out of his ashram. We'll also examine the efforts to find a new home for the ashram, led by two very different but equally devoted women: Ma Yoga Laxmi, and her assistant, Ma Anand Sheela. To the surprise of nearly everyone, Sheela was about to take Bhagwan’s future into her own hands … forever changing his life and his legacy.
In the Sisterhood's first Villainess installment, Melissa talks about Ma Anand Sheela's "holy" crusade, and CJ presents the extremely complicated herstory of anti-apartheid activist Winnie Mandela. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In this episode, we talk about Wild Wild Country, the new documentary from Netflix about enthusiastic enlightenment-seekers who built a commune called Rajneeshpuram in the rugged Central Oregon desert and, during their brief time there, clashed with the residents of the rural town of Antelope. We also explore American religious innovations, the problem with the label of “cult,” “deprivation theory” in apocalyptic biblical communities and in the U.S.A., how racism shapes public understandings of new religious movements, the Jesus Movement, LSD, Never Nudes, the mysterious Rajneesh/Osho and his right-hand woman Ma Anand Sheela, and more.

Ma Anand Sheela orchestrated Rajneeshpuram’s movement from India to Oregon. As Rajneesh himself faded into the shadows, the cult’s grabs for political power led to wiretapping, poisoning, fraud and murder plots. We examine how Sheela was driven towards chaos by her husband’s death, and Rajneesh’s high expectations.
We implore you, have you seen the six-part Netflix docu-series WILD WILD COUNTRY yet? If not, what are you waiting for? When the Rajneesh movement and their leader the Bhagwan came to rural Oregon in the 1980s was it just a clash of cultures (worldly orange-clad hippies vs. conservative townspeople) or a mafia-style hostile takeover? The directors Maclain and Chapman Way have crafted a twisting drama with unearthed videotape of the Rajneeshpuram saga, plus new interviews with many key players. While most of you reading this may not know the name Bhagwan Rajneesh, those who were around to watch the news in the early 1980s can tell you that he was a massive story around the country. That’s because Rajneesh and his followers spent $125 million back in 1981 to build Rajneeshpuram in in the Oregon desert, a 64,000-acre “utopia,” complete with a hospital, schools, restaurants, a shopping mall, and their own airport. What happened there and in the surrounding area is so far-fetched that you won’t believe it’s all true. One of the great things about the doc is the way the filmmakers weave footage from the actual events in alongside new interviews with the people involved. Our guest is journalist-podcaster/multi-hyphenate Los Angeles native, Richard Parks III. Richard has written for Lucky Peach, the New York Times, and McSweeney's. Prophesied to die young and surviving near-death-experiences, Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh felt discomfort with his own mortality from a young age. Over time, his spiritual studies and strong beliefs about capitalism and sexuality led Rajneesh to become a charismatic cult leader. This charisma attracted Ma Anand Sheela, the woman who rose from a 20-year-old devotee to a powerful leader in the cult that launched a deadly bioterrorism attack on over 750 Americans.
Directors Chapman and Maclain Way discuss their Netflix docs-series Wild Wild Country, which chronicles the story of Rajneeshpuram, a utopian community established by the followers of a Rolls Royce driving Indian spiritual guru named Baghwan Rajneesh in central Oregon in the early 1980s. The Way brothers provide further inside information including the reasoning behind the cult’s orange and red clothing, how they were able to track down so many ex-members including the Baghwan’s personal secretary Ma Anand Sheela, whether the members were hypnotized or sterilized, and the names of the beneficiaries of the Baghwan’s estate.
