It's a Monstie Baby episode! We're breaking the format with the premiere episode of Monster Rally Top 5, a countdown bonus series where the Monstie Men are joined by a guest & rank their Top 5 favorites of a given topic. There's nobody we're happier to have join us for this special episode than author, writer, & podcaster-extraordinaire: Jordan Morris! Make sure you head on down to your Local Comic Shop and pick up a copy of Jordan's newest comic, Web of Spider-verse: New Blood, where he pens a tale about a vampire-slaying Mary Jane Watson hunting a vampiric Spider-Man set in the 80's. And while you're already at your LCS, ask them to pre-order a copy (or 10) of Jordan's next comic, Godzilla vs LA, which will benefit charities helping to rebuild LA after the horrific fires that ravaged the city earlier this year. The Monstie Men start 2025 by wrapping up their Nosferatu retrospective with Robert Eggers's take on Count Orlok! Has there ever been a vampire movie with this much spit or this many O-faces? Is this one a low-key comedy? Or is it an erotic gothic romance? There's a lot to say about this one, and we definitely talk about the mustache of it all. Well, everyone knows Max Shreck wasn't an actual vampire when they filmed Nosferatu. What this movie presupposes is... maybe he was? The Monstie Men talk about 2000's Shadow of the Vampire, a movie about the filming of the original Nosferatu set in a world where Count Orlock is a real vampire that FW Murnau hired under the guise of stage actor Max Shreck. Not only is it a wild one, but Willem Dafoe & John Malkovich are firing on all cylinders in this one. Get all your links for the Monster Rally (including podcatchers, social media, & merch) here. Gobble gobble, Lil Monsties! For this Thanksgiving (one of Gary's Top 5 Holidays), the Monstie Men are here to bring you a full meal of an episode, and here's a spoiler alert: this movie certainly isn't a turkey. We talk about Werner Herzog's retelling of the silent film classic with a modern (well...for the time) twist. And this time? This time they can legally call him Dracula . The Mummy (1932), The Mummy's Hand (1940), The Mummy's Tomb (1942), The Mummy's Ghost (1944), and The Mummy's Curse (1944). In this episode, we go back the Universal Classics and take on one of the most unusual of the classic monsters, the Mummy. It's probably one of the best costumes and memorable character, but never seems to reach the same level of notoriety as his fellow monsters. But strangely enough, it is the one Universal monster to have more films devoted to his character alone, without going into the Monster Rally films where they had more than one monster in the picture. Here we dig up some facts as well as our own thoughts on the original 1932 film starring the one and only Boris Karloff, as well as the 4 other Mummy films that came out almost a decade later, but with much smaller budgets. These sequels started with a different mummy character and had a continuing storyline between the 4 films, or at least tried. Films mentioned in this episode: Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy (1955), The Black Cat (1941), Bride of Frankenstein (1935), Dawn of the Mummy (1981), Dracula (1931), Frankenstein (1931), Friday the 13th (1980), Green Hell (1940), Halloween (1978), House of Frankenstein (1944), Jason X (2001), Monster Squad (1987), The Mummy (1932), The Mummy (1999), The Mummy Curse (1944), The Mummy's Ghost (1942), The Mummy's Hand (1940), The Mummy's Tomb (1942), Son of Frankenstein (1939)
The Monsties are back with Universal's first Monster Rally movie. As broadcast October 14, 2022 with Danno just blissing out the entire time. Tonight we welcomed a lo-fi artist out of Cheongju, Korea who calls himself Nogymx in the studio. True name Jimmy Dunne, he drops his latest album Eien's Fable next Friday and we were just honored to give an early spin & world premiere to the opening cuts on the album for the show tonight, and have the artist play some of his favorite bumps from the lo-fi chillout hip-hop beats universe. Obviously, we also can't thank Nogymx enough for giving us the chance to rock some lo-fi for the entirety of this program, which is something we've been wanting to do for a very long time on the air. Jacob, Kieran, and Sam discuss a horror crossover classic, the first Monster Rally, and the reason the MCU exists--Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man. There's a lot of history to get into and a lot of silliness of cheesy 1940s films to break down, so join us in our second Halloween adventure of 2022. As broadcast July 26, 2022 with plenty for you to chill, study, and relax to. This evening we open with a favorite from Mark Farina's acclaimed and highly influential Mushroom Jazz series, which starting in 1996 really brought what's now called lo-fi to the forefront of underground music. We continued in that vein for the first block with Ted Feighan aka Monster Rally out with Botanica Dream on Friday, and we also had an interesting new LP from the UK's letherette to bump a bit as well with Kat Bass. New tunes out this week are pretty incredible, with Japanese Breakfast and SE SO NEON's So!Yoon! teaming up for a Korean version of "Be Sweet" right before Michelle Zauner herself joins us in Korea live for the Pentaport Music Festival on August 6!#feelthegravityTracks:Part I (00:00)The Hue feat Kissey Asplund – Stressin'Monster Rally – Moon FlowerLetherette – AlonePolo & Pan – From a World to AnotherStevie Zita – GhostbusterDivino Niño – Nos Soltanos Part II (30:03)Japanese Breakfast ft. Beyond that, new joints out from Swatkins, Kutiman, Bobby Oroza, Monster Rally, and a slew of others as well to cover the first half of the show. Dan Lloyd joins us once again after a very busy weekend of album releases, most notably Sharon Van Etten, The Smile, and Rammstein. As broadcast July 29, 2021 with bonus beats for you podcast boppers. We start tonight remembering Idris Muhammad, a stalwart of the jazz drums and a transformational figure in funk, disco, breaks, and by extension hip-hop & electronica. A proud son of Nawlins, Muhammad was the man behind too many samples to count off the top of even an expert's head. For the remainder of the first hour, we have lots of new cuts to check out with Kendra Morris, Arjuna Oakes, Common & many more to check out, with a couple more historical features of The Time's self-titled album, released this week 40 years ago, and The Roots "Do You Want More?!!!??!" which had been slated for a deluxe reissue last year that was delayed due to the pandemic. Cometh the hour, cometh the Dan after we hit the top of the clock again for our weekly AMPED rock feature, with an absolutely shocking Jonathan Davis cover of the Pet Shop Boys, Lucy Dacus speaking Simlish, and what has to be the tune of the week from The Linda Lindas getting their 2nd spin in 3 days' time.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Idris Muhammad – Crap AppleKendra Morris feat Eraserhood Sound – When We Would RideCommon feat PJ – ImagineJoan As Police Woman feat Tony Allen & Dave Okumu – Take Me To Your LeaderThe Time – Get It Up Part II (30:03)Bobby Oroza – Breakthru (This Love demo)Arjuna Oakes & Serebii – Even When You're GoneAstrocolor feat Caley Thomas – ParadiseMonster Rally – Tangerine LoungeFlamingosis – AuroraThe Roots feat Cassandra Wilson – Swept AwayThe Root – Distortion To Static Part III (57:30)Turnstile – HolidaySlipknot – DualityCoheed and Cambria – ShouldersPet Shop Boys (with a brief snippet of Jonathan Davis) – It's a SinQuicksand - BrushedDry Cleaning – Bug Eggs Part IV (89:17)The Linda Lindas – Oh!Volbeat – Don't Tread on MeLucy Dacus – Hot and Heavy (Simlish)The Joy Formidable – ChimesLindsey Buckingham – On the Wrong Side

This week we watched episode 17 "Monster Rally" of the animated series of the Mighty Ducks. It was odd. In fact, it was much stranger than all the previous episodes of this show about alien ducks who come from a hockey centric society battling dragons who have both robotic soldiers and also magic. We discuss beatniks and weather they actually existed or not, how we don't like drag racing, the proper method for making spaghetti on a stick, and how these dinguses fall for yet another fake out. https://popculturefailure.podbean.com/ popculturefailure@gmail.com Show: @FailedPopCultur Jake: @mdwstlvaffr Sky: @sandwichsurplus
