The road often travels through places you'd rather avoid…
Sulli is your typical one-of-a-kind backline tech, spending over 30 years making it work and keeping cool. It doesn't matter if it's a club or big outdoor stage, she's left her prints all across the live music world.
Beckie is a FOH mixer, production manager and podcaster who I have had the great pleasure to work with. She tells us about what her role is in a digital sound world. She also has pictures of me sleeping in the front lounge so be nice to her. Check out her podcast at https://soundgirlspod.podbean.com/
A TM, PM, TA and housing Baron, Maryjo covers the books from all different angles. She has brought her experience to tours for the up and coming as well as legacy acts. Find out why twice is nice and how to count money with a handgun rather than a calculator.
There is a language that is used by live event people; some of it still has to be translated so that the show can go on. Abi is a linguist, a problem solver and a great tour manager. She is also proof of the fact that people who do this can find their way in by backing into it. It takes what it takes! We discuss the road, the people we've met and how some women have to be to deal with the boys club.
There are those who go way WAY back in your career and Dave for me is one of those. We spent many years doing Paul Simon live together. In the past few years we've worked on James Taylor. This podcast came from 2 conversations this month following a file flop I had on the first one. Through a little audio butchery and editing here it is.
Today we travel into the snowy mountains of Colorado to find a founding member of Bitterman Circle rebuilding ancient piano parts with the help of the local rodent fauna, which apparently had its way with the internet connection from the get go. Guitar guys get to do drop tunings on guitar but this guy had to do them on a Grand! It's all fun until someone pokes their eye out. Well, maybe.
What do Rocket From The Crypt and Air Supply have in common? Rob K tells us about his path, why walking the dog may bring on the apocalypse and why the first show post-Pandemic will need to be documented.
Steve "Chopper" Borges' name has come up more than a few times in Bitterman Circle as many of our guests have been on the road with him. From his early days with The Tubes as a props guy to some of rock's "royalty" production manager, he's a guy you want when a problem needs to be solved. He also has some interesting takes on a post-Covid touring world.
Justin Crew is a world class guitar tech who has worked with the best in the biz. With all the places and shows he's been to, you'd think he'd seen it all. Then comes Covid-19 and an invitation to get inside a truly 21st Century Bubble. Another opportunity to stay cool and do the job at hand...
There are a lot of moving parts on a tour of every size. Who coordinates the departments, the band and the audience? A production manager has to make sure that the show can get in the door and be ready for the audience in a timely and safe manner. Mason has been a part of live music in many different roles for some time now and has a view of the current situations.
A founding member of Bitterman Circle, Kevin discusses housecoats, cake and ethics. Will the pandemic end or retirement come first? Who can say? After finding civilized touring it seems a shame to walk away.
Yeah, I had all kinds of artsy "deep" questions for our guest and what do you know, we got road stories and a lot of laughs. Point 5 is a story teller and has gigged forever. Let him break-it-down for ya!
The Circle turns 50! Good thing we have a damn good guest. Terry Lawless tells us why Good Enough is not Good Enough.
In lieu of our Landscaping roots, Chad and I discuss the finer points of Sherpa teching. What does it take to be an advocate for one person when there are 50,000 waiting for you to go away?
Another old friend visits the Circle and tells his story. Chainsaw and I met in 2003 on the Rising tour. In classic fashion we hear the tale of drawing a line towards something and getting there. Note: no guitars, golf carts, chafing dishes or picnic tables were harmed during this podcast.
This week we talk to Lighting Director Rich Locklin, who's worn many hats over the years. We find out what it takes to unlight an artist, tour bonuses and how album covers can give you the inspiration to take it to the next level. As we wander from home and into the sacred spaces, we want you to know that no sage was burnt during the recording of this weeks show.
This weeks interview is with Guitar Tech and Guitar Player Bobby Schneck. OK, maybe it's player then tech... listen long enough and you'll hear which way it is. I had the pleasure traveling with him in the early 2000's. Our backgrounds are different but our playlists are surprisingly similar. Bobby proves with hard work and a big heart that you can have your dream job.
After 13 years Bitterman pulls the trigger and posts another podcast! Different format, same cold coffee flavor.Jim Corona is a modern day Jack of all trades, backline, production, sound design and mixing on a scale from a single XLR in the middle of a field to international festivals. I ask him a few questions about how his approach keeps him so busy. A bit rusty I am with my interview skills but that's no comparison to my shoddy sound work.Enjoy!

Ok, here goes...a slice of life/noiseseeing of our work day at the NovaRock Festival in Nickelsdorf, Austria. It includes roadies whining in abouncing van, another band tries to blow up my iriver and you get tofind out what those roadies are doing between bands at the big rockshow during set change besides looking at girls. BUT there is a twofold warning: the sound quality during parts of the 'cast are poor dueto the excessive volume of the surroundings. I have tried tolimit/compress/edit most of the really rotten bits but I would suggestnot tightrope walking while listening to this podcast. Also, this oneis a bit less worksafe than usual...maybe an R rating as myself and theboys tend to curse while we work. Enjoy!
