Ep. 93 (Part 3 of 3) | Integral psychotherapist Mark Forman, author of the seminal work A Guide to Integral Psychotherapy, doesn't mince words when it comes to the field he is passionate about: helping people out of their mental pain and dysphoria. Mark's Integral perspective and longtime work in the trenches—with clients from all income levels, political persuasions, and levels of development—put him in a unique position to illuminate us as to the nuances of the hot button issues new to psychotherapy or ones that have suddenly exploded in numbers: misuse of the term trauma and its diagnostic creep, what the research says about the effectiveness of psychedelics to treat mental health disorders and what that portends for the future, the exponentially growing trend of teenage girls deciding they are transgender and the crying need for more data to help with counseling transgender and trans-curious youth, what is causing the loneliness epidemic, the pressing need to reimagine the male role to balance how feminism has changed the female role, and more. Mark describes the “therapeutic zone” that can happen in therapy when inspiration strikes, and shares the latest research on what makes therapists into “super-shrinks” who have client outcomes ten times better than average. He also relates how living in our psychologized culture affects therapy, and how it can get tricky when therapist and client are at different levels of development. Mark's vast knowledge and big heart shine through the many topics he delves into and his tales of actual therapeutic encounters are eye opening and moving. This is an impassioned, courageous conversation on the front lines of mental health and psychotherapy. In this follow-up discussion, we are joined by Mark Forman and Nomali Perera to take a candid look at a number of the teacher-related scandals that have impacted the community, and a number of the community's missteps over the past two decades as it transformed from a small gathering of interested individuals to a global movement. Dr. Mark Forman provides psychotherapy in San Jose and online throughout California, as well as developmental consulting for individual adults worldwide. He is the founder and lead trainer of the Certified Integral Psychotherapist (CIT) Global Training Program and actively teaches and supervises both therapists and coaches interested in the direct application of Integral Theory. EVERYTHING? Well, maybe not everything... But, as integral psychotherapist and leader Mark Forman will argue, there are a number of criticisms of the integral movement and community that continue to circulate, that could be put to sleep with a better understanding of many of the changes and developments within, and the many accomplishments of, the movement over the past two decades. Do integralists think integral begins and ends with Ken Wilber? Is the integral movement a cult? Are integralists disembodied eggheads? Do integralists ignore politics and social issues? Has integral failed to impact the world? Tune in as Mark discusses these and other questions with Bruce and Layman. The US Federal government runs more than 3500 programs, each designed to deliver a benefit to citizens or other customers in the US and around the world. Each is a collaborative effort with state and local governments, NGOs and sometimes other counties. And each relies on actors at the end of many delivery chains, far from where programs are planned and managed. Teachers. Inspectors. Law enforcement. War fighers. Diplomats. VA doctors and nurses. And many more. So how can the Federal government ensure its programs deliver the right benefit to the right beneficiary, in the right way - plus continuously innovate to stay relevant to citizens and partners? I know of no one better able to navigate a challenge of this magnitude than Mark Forman. With 30 years' experience inside government and out, in the US and around the world, Mark can conceive of solutions to big problems and see how they work where people implement them where the rubber meets the road. In this episode we discuss objectives and key results - OKRs - as a framework for getting people on the same page to deliver results and continuously improve return on program investments. Here are a few of my ahh-ha! moments: 2:06 - The OKR model as a framework for return on investment, especially of investments in transformations 3:11 - OKRs shift the focus from paying for activities to buying outcomes 4:19 - The relationship between ORRs and KPIs 5:38 and on - OKR use in the Federal government with 3500 programs 11:21 - The crux of modernizing many of the Federal government's systems is the difference between the user experience and the user interface 19:04 - The failures in applying agile development globally - which was supposed to be a breakthrough for modernization - stem from using technology to simplify legacy approaches to work, rather than using technology to rethink work 26:35 - OKR conversations in 3500 programs is a daunting endeavor. How could it be done on that scale? 31:05 - Using Federal Enterprise Architecture reference models to frame OKR conversations within and across programs 41:05 - Meeting the toughest innovation challenge - transforming programs as they conduct business as usual, which they must 43:05 - We can't boil the ocean so where do we start?

In this conversation with Integral psychotherapist Mark Forman we explore the differences between psychotherapy and spiritual practice and the specific contexts when each of these methods is most appropriate. For example your meditation practice may bring up psychological issues that your meditation teacher will likely be unqualified to help you with and you would get more effective help from a psychotherapist. If you are having transpersonal experiences with meditation or psychedelics then a psychotherapist may not have the relevant skills to unpack them. Unfortunately many spiritual traditions and teachers claim that meditation and psychedelics are the complete answer to everything in your life, and lots of ‘spiritual' people wreck their personal and family lives by neglecting psychotherapy. On the other hand if you only explore psychotherapy then it's likely you will never tap into the depths of experiences beyond your personality that are brought forth by spiritual practices.  For more information on Mark Forman's work please visit http://www.drmarkforman.com/ For more information about my work please visit www.bodyheartmindspirit.co.uk To hear more of my music please visit my soundcloud page https://soundcloud.com/ralphcree My YouTube channel is https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUfQp5jM16pPB7QX2zmMYbQ My Facebook page is https://www.facebook.com/bodyheartmindspirituk/ P and C owned by Ralph Cree 2021

Trauma. It’s a term we hear everywhere today, or so it seems. In our psychologically informed age, the idea that many of us—if not all of us—carry around some psychological and even physiological effects from troubled events in our history is commonplace. But what if all trauma was not the same? In this episode of Thinking Ahead, Carter interviews Dr. Mark Forman, author of The Monster’s Journey: From Trauma to Connection. Mark takes listeners on a new archetypal journey of self, one that compares and contrasts to the much better known “Hero’s Journey” archetype made popular by famed mythologist Joseph Campbell. For those who experienced significant early childhood trauma in their own lives, the Monster’s Journey describes the pathway to wholeness, peace, and connection. In their conversation, Mark and Carter explore how to heal the inner “monster” and what a path of recovery might look like. How do we know if our own history might have included the type of trauma that would generate an inner “monster”? How do we break the karmic chain that links generations in traumatic psychological events? Even for those who haven’t undertake the monster’s journey, there is much to learn in this episode that may be relevant in better understanding a friend, companion, family member, or loved one.

Cali Claptrap: Integral Conversations

Mark Forman is an integrally-informed licensed therapist in the state of California. His book "The Monster's Journey: From Trauma to Connection" examines trauma using an adaptation based off of Joseph's Campbell transformational guide "The Hero with a Thousand Faces." An integral life practice requires us to examine our shadow and do the work of cleaning up. When we don't challenge and confront our own adverse childhood experiences, or trauma, our lives become fragmented. Our narratives become incoherent. Anakin Skywalker becomes Darth Vader. Mark is transparent, vulnerable and bravely bears his soul by sharing his own traumatic experiences that led him to write The Monster's Journey, a book provides Ariadne's thread to those souls that have lost their way in the labyrinth and have become their own minotaur. Society calls them monsters, or anti-heroes. Mark dons the archetypal robes of the Healer in The Monster's Journey to help these wounded souls connect with their true selves so they can make their life story and lives integrated again.

Have you ever noticed that even though childhood was a long time ago, on some level, it feels like it was yesterday? In some cases, we recall positive experiences. In others, we remember our hurts and, even worse, our traumas. On this episode, we will be talking about trauma and some ways you can help reduce its harmful effects. Dr. Mark Forman is a psychologist and the author of a book called “The Monster's Journey” that details both clinical aspects of trauma as well as Mark's own personal experience with it. Mark's idea to use themes of Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey and, instead, transpose a monster, is profound and he will explain what that means and how it can be helpful to anyone who has experienced trauma. On a personal note, I have collaborated with Mark on various projects over the years. I have been impressed with Mark's clinical skills as well as his ability to articulate useful ideas that people can put into their own lives to improve their healing processes. Mark Forman, who has lived and worked in Taiwan for over twenty years and is host of the podcast Big in Asia, is our featured guest. (His websites: business, personal, podcast.) An eye-witness to the trends which are shaping Asia's rapidly changing future, Mark Forman is an American businessman from Brooklyn New York who studied Chinese language and culture at the University of Arizona and, during the last two decades, has traveled a great deal in China as well as within many of its neighboring countries. In today's interview he describes his personal observations of the changes sweeping the Asian world and especially Greater China. Greater China is a term commonly used in business and economics to indicate not just mainland China, but also the regions that it governs, such as Hong Kong, as well as the regions it does not govern, such as Taiwan.  Hosted by Stephen Euin Cobb, this is the July 9, 2008 episode of The Future And You. [Running time: 59 minutes] While the topics covered in this interview range all over Asia, much of the focus is on mainland China and its relationship to other countries. This is because of all the countries in Asia, China has the biggest influence on the rest of the world and yet (since the Bamboo Curtain is only now beginning to fall) for most Westerners it is the least understood.  Topics discussed include: the transformation of China from an anti-business communist economy to a pro-business free-market economy; the rise of Chinese consumerism; how internet access (including Google and Wikipedia) are eroding Chinese government censorship and forcing a new openness; the possibility of democracy taking root in China, and how a non-western democracy might be defined; the 2008 Olympics in Beijing; and of course much, much more.
